Have I told you how crazy this series is? I think I lost all my nerves to feel anything about the next volume (final.) Also, Ri's transformation is freaky, and Eva's transformation in Rei's form is seriously disgusting. But I'm just glad Ritsuko gets the revenge for herself. But I think, Commander Ikari's death isn't official yet? It has to be gory. I need more blood (for that man's death.)

First Misato..now Reiko... *sigh*
I am not sure what is happening or is it a good thing or not. It is heading to the big conclusion, unfortunately with more confusion. Just leave poor kids alone! They have had enough!

Man, Shinji & Asuka can't catch a break. This time Asuka gets saved from death (a death that got played in the movie a lot like a rape) at the hands of the Mass Production Evas by Shinji, and Shinji gets his one triumphant moment where he manages to save someone, only for the trigger to get pulled on Third Impact anyway.

Also, poor Maya. She finds what is potentially a great job, with a boss she greatly admires in Ritsuko, to the point of falling for her, only to discover that Ritsuko is morally compromised, the giant robots she's helping to maintain are horrific monsters (leading to at least two occasions where she tosses her cookies), and Lilith sends her almost-but-not-quite-incorporeal-enough hand through Maya, which I have no doubt would have been a horrific sensation.

I've got to say, though, Ritsuko getting the last laugh by shooting Gendo through the throat was quite satisfying. If the characters who have died aren't going to get to join the Great Link in Third Impact, then I'd consider Gendo's death to be justice. Though again, if the characters who died don't get to join the Great Link, then I'd say that Misato & Kaji deserved far better - even if they don't get to come back out afterwards, then I'd say that they at least earned eternity together - but that's my inner romantic talking.

This is the penultimate volume of this series and what a fast, page-turning whirlwind of a read. Entirely dramatic and unpredictable events and no one comes out of this unharmed! Frankly, we lose some major characters, but that comes as no shock as it's been happening all along in this series. No one is safe! I haven't watched the anime so I have no comparisons to make. But I'm utterly fascinated with where this story is going to end. Rei is probably my most favourite manga character ever and I can't wait for the final volume to come out. This volume though is all action right from the beginning. It's not heavy on text and actually has many wordless (except FX) scenes as battle is at an optimum here. Great cliff-hanger ending. Vol. 14 was published in Japan this year, Jun. 2013, but so far there is no release date for the English edition. I'm hoping we don't have to wait too long!

2015,Oct.16: Re-read - I'm just now finally getting to Vol. 14 so I've come back for a re-read. Man! This is just so good! The art is breathtaking! And I'm just left feeling so overwhelmed! What does it all mean and how will it end?

despite being one of the heaviest volumes in the series so far, it's also the most brief. I appreciate the author's ability to juxtapose scenes of intense, visceral action and brutality with poignant moments of childhood and everyday life as flashbacks. it creates a more emotional reading experience. Rei sabotaging Gendo's plans is one of my favorite scenes of all time, the way a soulless body gains emotion through human experience is the epitome of sci-fi (not that I've read much).

The Story: All's been previously revealed: machinations, prophecies, etc. and all's been previously confirmed. Now, all of that word-of-mouth is finally SHOWN and expanded upon through context. Gendo (containing Adam) tries to fuse, against all caution, with Rei (Lilith) - a selfish as ever tactic to be with Yui. (pg. 83)

Leave it to Evangelion's operations crew to specifically keep introducing new big brain terminology, both scientific and biblical, straight on through the penultimate book. TIL a high-points worth Scrabble word from Aoba: "Malebolge." It's a reference to the eighth layer of hell in Inferno, and it served as layers or barriers for the tunnel en route to Terminal Dogma? (pg. 106) Makoto gave me the less harmful "E-layer", the layer of the ionosphere able to reflect medium-frequency radio waves. (pg. 149) I'm making an Eva dictionary next time, dammit.

Quote appreciation!

1) With the purification of the red earth representing eternity we first bring the GeoFront to its original form. - Kiel, pg. 107; Again, Seele wants to boost an unnatural evolution, Gendo will abuse any resource to be with Yui, but Shinji will hopefully set everyone free from either fate.

2) Through the destruction of the ego of the pilot of Eva Unit-01 we will complement the people. The time of thrice atonement is now. - Kiel, pgs. 137-138; What on God's green psychobabble is this? Obviously, the pompous zealot thinks he knows what's best for humankind, but is atonement a substitute for impact here?

3) The fruit of knowledge possessed by humankind, and the fruit of life possessed by the Angels... Eva Unit-01 has both and now returns to the embryo of life-The Tree of Life. - Fuyutsuki, 140-142; the Eva has been transformed into a god by the power of science and everlasting life.

4) Now the cicadas sing all year, but before you were born we had other seasons. - Yui, pg. 161; Not only is this a great soundbite on how the world changed post-Impact(s), but the ミ-ン (mi-n) sounds make much more sense now.

Art appreciation! The amount of ugly cries in stage 84 is saddening. The funhouse anatomy feels like a rush job, and it left me disappointed, especially since I love Asuka, and it's the closing chapter on her chronicled fights within her Eva. Panel 15-2 looks like a joke, frankly. Shinji isn't even safe from this wild, unhinged jaw virus. See: pg. 55-1. But it's not all gloom and doom. This cover is one of my favorites. Our three main pilots, looking snappy for a photo-finish finale. And do I spy a Dragon Quest slime on 165-5?

1) As the series has progressed, and Sadamoto's style changed, I'd fallen out of love with how he draws humans. It's not bad, but I just love his earlier style. The new stuff might be a bit more "mature" looking, and it certainly suits the content, but it's not my favorite. Conversely, the as one style declines, the Eva units, masterful looking in all their technical glory, have been drawing my eyes more and more. The design of the new series of Eva's give me aquatic life / shark vibes. Just look at 29-3. There's (thankfully) many great shots of Unit-01 and Unit-02 together, like 34-3, 38-4, and the spread on pg. 49. In the background of that last example, the exposed shell of the GeoFront actually looks like the Moon. Plus the Eva series descending on our heroes looks badass. And finally, we have the 2-page spread on pgs. 58-59. Glorious.

2) Haunting stigmata visuals. (pgs. 86-87)

3) Page 135. Some Junji Ito shit right there. Love to see it.

Moment appreciation!

1) (A) Rei denying Gendo of his prize, (abusing all of his power) to be with Yui, in search of her own, to be with Shinji. In reuniting with Lilith, the creature now becomes complete. (Stage 87.) (B) ...And then Ritsuko pops Commander Ikari a little later. One-two. K.O. *Nelson laugh* (pgs. 119-122)

2) Unit-01 is transforming into a god, and Lilith, reuniting with him as an amiable Rei, touches Shinji's consciousness. "I am your heart and your wishes. What do you wish for?" (pg. 148)

3) Shinji's returning memories. He A.T. field's his classmates. He daydreams. I, too, know what the insides of those walls look like. Luckily, those walls are painted with clouds. And, among other artistic renovation, Sadamoto's clouds have gotten exponentially better. (pg. 168-170)

The Extras: Now, oddly, the printing dates and credits are in the back of the book. Mine is actually a second printing, from April '14! Must have been the first one I got at Zeus with Barry, not even a year of dating under our belts. The first printing is listed as Nov '12. And at the time, I think I was living with Ash in my old apartment in Crooked Stick! Like Sadamoto's aging from 40 to 50 within a matter of volumes, how time flies. God, I remember the struggle to exercise patience for these stages, checking scanlation sites day in and out. I was caught up though, so, I must not have felt the need to read the official licensed translation in a hurry. Plus, poor. Also, the Evangelion 3-in-1s started releasing that same month, so I think I was debating on retiring my old set for the new, larger format with the art gallery. I'm glad I didn't "upgrade" just for aesthetics. I only have the final 2-in-1, which is glorious, but I'm not sure if the previous omnibuses would have recycled the old editorials. Speaking of editorials, there are none! My guess is that there was no room for it on account of there being an extra chapter(s) this volume? There are usually 6 or 7 per book, but 9 in this one. Still, some have been only a single page's worth of content. Almost feels like something's missing. Though, I'll accommodate room for more official Stages.

Formatting, oh boy. We have some issues. Note that the 13th volume in Japan splices Asuka from the cover and applies her to the spine. Volume 2 used a different piece of art for the cover than the Japanese original, one without major (pun intended) player Misato, which meant she didn't show up on the shelf until volume twelve. Gendo replaced Yui on volume 8, which only looks weird, even though Gendo is much more prominent, because it's his younger, more unrecognizable self. Whereas Yui looks pretty much the same throughout our knowledge of her. I wouldn't have switched anything, and I don't know why they did so for the American audience. Half of the spines would have featured guys and gals equally. (Say what you want about Kaworu, but the same could be applied to Rei. Alien gaijin mofos.)

Lately, there's been a lot more text / speech bubbles going into the folds. I really have to wedge a book apart to read in the crevices. Can't be healthy for the life of it. (See some examples on pgs. 75-1, 85-1, 91-1, etc.)

Why are Calling, parts one and two, listed both as stage 84, yet Face-to-Face, parts one and two, are stages 89 and 90? It's literally a difference of a few pages between both segmented chapters. In the omnibus, these 4 split stages are collapsed into two.

The glossary explanation is suuuper short, and even though they don't need precise examples to illustrate their point on reading direction, they could have just as easily matched example SFX along with it. Given that it's so succinct it seems very rushed, considering there's only two pages' worth. And looking for examples they could have used instead of the seemingly random ones, I noticed the sounds are off by two pages! Wtf, Viz. Starting with at least sound 113-2, the numbers in the glossary are all ahead by two pages. So, 113-2 is actually 111-2.

One positive in this area: it does look like there was some unintentionally cool formatting, on pgs. 174-175, to preserve the speech balloons and artwork. I'm not normally about sideways text, but it works here and respects the original layouts.

There're no character bios? No editorials, a wonky-ass glossary. New table of contents layout. New copywrite page positions (with credits, printer's key, etc). And what's this? I'm noticing a lack of Carl Gustav Horn?! *gasp* Kinda sucks.

And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun. And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: - Revelation 12:1, KJV (Thanks, Biblehub.com.)

A truly amazing manga.

This is the manga adaptation of the highly controversial anime series of the same name.
While I know many people that don't really the series, personally it's a personal favorite. The manga further solidified my love for the series and to be honest I actually like the manga better than the anime.

The story stays true for the most part to the source material while adding some of it's own personal touches of it's own to the plate. The pacing was done well and the manga never felt like it dragged out or rushed anything, except for maybe the battle scenes. The ending of the manga is where it truly shines, the mangas' narration of the events of End of Evangelion were brilliantly done giving Shinji the development that he needed to become the hero to save everyone and giving resolve to a series that never had a decent epilogue.

The characters stay pretty much the same,Asuka is still the hot-headed Tsundere,Rei is still stoic but is portrayed as more human than in the original and Shinji is still angsty but develops past that stage in the end.

The art is excellent.Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is a brilliant artist and his drawings are clear, consistent(for the most part) and portray emotions very well. The character designs and the Angel designs are faithful to the original.

What can I say? I love this manga. It's in my top 5 manga of all time coming short to Berserk.Sadamoto's interpretation of Eva is brilliant and I personally feel it outshines it predecessor if only by a little.

Whether you hate Eva or you love it,it's impact is questionable.I would highly recommend this manga to anyone. If you don't like it,fair enough it's your opinion.

Evangelion 13

This is a review of the entire series!

After the disastrous results of a cataclysmic event known as the Second Impact, an alien species known only as Angels terrorizes the last remnants of humanity. Young children are raised in military schools and trained to combat these godlike entities by piloting giant biomechanical mechas into battle. The story revolves around the personal struggles of the members of NERV, the shady organization responsible for the creation of these mechas; most notably the cold and calculated leader Gendo Ikari and his chronically depressed son Shinji.

The surface level story of Evangelion is deceptively simple. It appears to be a straightforward apocalypse story about the last survivors of humanity fighting back against an alien race that nearly drove them to extinction, but there’s a lot of depth in the background of the plot. There’s more to the Angels than meets the eye. NERV has a disturbing number of skeletons in its closet. And the few survivors in charge of fighting against the aliens have an abundance of mental scars in desperate need of being healed lest they destroy themselves before the Angels can get to them.

I love the subtle depth of the characters. Shinji appears to be a cold and distant boy with odd tendencies that are almost sociopathic in nature, but he turns out to be an extremely sensitive and anxiety-ridden teen who suffers from a lack of parental guidance and affection. He’s not always likable, but he’s uncomfortably relatable. Asuka appears to be a bratty and spunky girl with all the confidence in the world, but she suffers from a self-destructive inferiority complex caused by past tragedies that causes her to act out in front of adults to make herself appear more mature than she really is while struggling with emotional breakdowns in her private time.

Every character has a facade they put on in front of their peers, only for it to be revealed that they’re hiding a brutal amount of unhealed trauma and emotional baggage that usually causes more damage than the main threat of the story. In fact, the main story is just a part of the background. What makes Evangelion a masterpiece in my eyes is how horrifyingly human the characters are, how painful their struggles are and how disastrous their bad choices end up being.

A very bleak, depressing and terrifying series that tackles nihilistic philosophy and twisted religious allegories in abundance, but there are faint glimmers of hope and lessons to be learned from the catastrophic mistakes made by the mentally and emotionally broken cast.

I enjoyed reading this much more as an adult than I did as a teen!

This masterpiece has taken a special spot in my heart. After watching the anime, I thought how about read the novel. So I did it. Since it was soo good that it left an impact on me. I decided to go on and research about Evangelion. This leads me to discover the depressing things author Hideaki Anno had to go through. He mentioned in an interview that Evangelion is a way of expression Hideaki Anno was using to burn down his feelings of depression. I wouldn't say that Shinji Ikari is my favorite protagonist, but I can't help it but feel relatable to him. During this novel as well as the anime it almost feels like I am Shinji, I felt like I was betrayed. My feelings were betrayed. Shinji will always be the most unique protagonist I will ever see, because the protagonist is not the ideal version of himself, as if Evangelion is telling me that Shinji is the person you would never want to be. This is my review of Evangelion as a whole.

Boah. Es wird richtig weird.
Teilweise ist das gut, Teilweise weiß ich nicht, wer jetzt eigentlich noch was genau will und warum.
Confusion.
Vorallem Ikari.
