Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.
Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.
If I’m being completely honest, of all the characters in Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series, I care the least about Eve Levine and Kristof Nast. They have their purpose, but I never fell in love with them the way I fell in love with some of the other characters. Thus, I’ve never been overly crazy about the short stories that follow them. However, as I love all the extras we’re offered for this world, I was more than willing to give Bewitched a read.
I’ll be honest, this one surprised me. I enjoyed it much more than I’d imagined, considering how I do not care much for the two characters involved. This may not be a full four-star rating, but it was close enough (and surprised me enough) that I had to round up.
Giving us the story of how the two met, I found myself enjoying their interactions more than I’d imagined. Not to mention, I really enjoyed watching how things played out in the end. A part of me believes I may have enjoyed Eve more had I read this first, but this one did provide a retrospective appreciation of her character.
Certainly a worthwhile read for fans of the series.
This is the story of how Eve and Kristof met and fell in love. And also the specifics concerning why she left him. Fair warning--it's as lovely as it is heartbreaking.
First read: June 2010 (in Tales of the Otherworld) Re-read: May 2022 Rating: 5/5 stars Story #5 in my chronological re-read of the Women of the Otherworld series.
Eve Levine is up there as one of my favourite characters in this series. Her book Haunted was the first Kelley Armstrong novel that I read, picked up impulsively at Waterstones when I was a teenager. I read it the whole book from cover to cover that day and I have been a fan of Kelley Armstrong ever since.
This story is all about Eve’s romance with Kristof Nast . The time period is unspecified but there are some clues as to when it takes place. In Armstrong’s chronology of the novellas, she puts this story either fifth or sixth (depending on which list you follow) and as the previous novella, #4 Ascension, ends in the early 1980s, it is safe to say it must be at least set at that point in time. This is corroborated in the story when a teenager is mentioned playing cassette tapes on her Walkman (Walkman cassette players first came out in 1979) and Kristof regularly uses a beeper for communication.
Betwitched is our first focused look at the magical side of the Otherworld and how the witches operate in society. Previously, this world has only been hinted at, in the early 1940s when Jeremy was conceived and born while his mother was using magical rituals (#2 Infusion). In this story, we go from knowing nothing about witches to having an information overload. Eve is introduced as a tough young woman with a troubled past. For around a year she has been working “in the supernatural black market” while her day job is teaching privileged young witches defensive spells. Within this magical world, there are also half-demons, who have their own powers. Eve is one of them; she is a witch on her mother’s side and an ‘Aspicio’ demon on her father’s side. Her demon powers give her enhanced sight, including some sort of x-ray vision. She meets Kristof - single dad of two young sons as well as the son and heir of a major Cabal - when she begins teaching him witch-magic at his request.
Their love story is bittersweet. .
I loved this little reminder of Eve and Kris’ story and I can’t wait to re-read Haunted very soon.
General trivia: - Bewitched takes place in Chicago and Los Angeles - Different types of spells mentioned; binding spells, sensing spells, energy bolts, healing potions - The magical community has its own hierarchy. At the top are the Cabals; modern corporations ran by sorcerer family groups. There are also witches’ Covens, and witches and sorcerers don’t traditionally get along. - Cabals mentioned by name: Nast and Cortez - Eve’s Coven leader is a woman named Ruth Winterbourne. Eve used to babysit her daughter, Paige. - Kristof Nast’s description: mid-thirties, 6’ 2’’, blonde hair and blue eyes. - Eve is 6 feet tall with dark hair and dark eyes - There are two types of witch magic; white magic (only practised by the Coven) and dark magic, which is frowned upon. Eve is trained in both. - Kristoff’s sons are named Bryce and Sean
I have to say, I wish I had read this short story before I read the Eve-centric book. It might have helped me like her a little more and understand some of her motivations.
This short story is truly wonderful at twisting the preconceived notions I had about both Eve and Kristof based on the horrible events of the first few books in the Otherworld series. Eve is early in her career as a dark witch, Kristof is trying to find his way in this Cabal world as a single father, and the two of them meet over mutual needs. Kristof ends up hiring Eve to secretly teach him witch magic while also (unbeknownst to Eve) taking care of Eve's bad guy problem. The two of them are both a little bit broken when it comes to regular relationships, so it seems that they would have no problem keeping it strictly professional. Luckily it doesn't stay that way for long and we get to see more and more of their feelings emerging.
I can't stress enough how important this story is to truly enjoying Kris and Eve *so much* more than strictly the books can accomplish. If I could do it over again, I would certainly try to read these stories and books with the order numbers correct.
Bewitched – This is about Eve and how she meets Kristof. But also about how she got sucked into doing more of the dark magic we always hear so much bad about. I enjoyed seeing Kristof woe Eve it was sweet.
I really liked this one. I hated the way it ended but it was expected. What I liked though... EVE. She is by far my favorite of the Women of the Otherworld. The story of how she and Kristoff met and their early relationship, as well as how Savannah came to be was fabulous. Krist's family is truly horrible and in the end I was so angry and hurt for both he and Eve. This is an excellent intro to the series.
I loved this story! I can't wait to read more about these characters later in the main series, hopefully there will be some resolution later in the series to this story that left me hanging a bit and holding out hope for Eve and Kris!
Honestly I fell in love with these two characters and based on this story theirs will be so heartbreaking, but I can't wait to read it!
Otherworld series 0.06. This is a short story about Evie Levine. After being kicked out of her coven and hiding from a contract out on her, then suddenly everything changes when Kristof Nast comes into her life.
Kristof is a combination of a smooth operator and kid next door that you love as the hunky male. I loved watching him slowly bring Evie over to his side. I loved this story and hope there’s more about them.
Footnote: This story is in the ‘Tales of the Otherworld’ collection originally found on the author’s website. You can either read the main books first then go back and pick up the short bits and pieces or, like me, do them all in order and try to figure out who/what everybody is.
Fave scene: the newspaper article, Nast’s family emergency and meeting Thomas Nash.
This is the story of how Eve and Kris first met. I wish I had read this before I read Eve’s story in the Otherworld series because it provided some much needed background and history between the characters. I’m thrilled to have found the chronological reading order for the series now and am going through all the shorts I missed on out on earlier.
Wow, just WOW! I really LOVEd this story, it wasn't what I was expecting having already read later stories relating to these two characters. I really LIKED these people, I hate knowing their future.

This was an excellent short! I am so looking forward to reading more of Eve's adventures :) I loved the fact that she was a realist who even though she dreamed of things on one scale, never lost sight of the truth and even when she wanted to puff herself up bigger and badder than she knew she actually was in her own narrative she immediately acquiesced to the truth afterwards. I can't help but like and admire a character (or person for that matter) that values the truth more than the glittering fantasy that his/her own perceptions has painted the world. I also liked the fact that she could admit when she was wrong, not only to herself but to others as well and was willing to move forward with her life without holding grudges. Eve simply chalked things up to being a lesson learned because that's what life is, it's a lesson learned and people who aren't willing to come to terms with that concept risk wasting most of their lives locked in the futile effort of trying to control everyone else they encounter. It was evident she was a member of the walk away or stay and pay club much like myself and she chose between those two particular factions in a fashion remiencent of how I make choices when facing comparable dialemas. Always with a "is this whole thing really worth it" line in the sand in mind. Some may think this to be the cowardly way to face life. I say it is the smarter (albeit colder) way of dealing with the hand your'e dealt in life. Why waste time and energy fighting simply because someone else decides they wish to have one, that can be more productively spent on more meaningful endeavors? I guess one can easily say I found this tiny tale bewitching :D
First disclosure: I needed to read 80 for my yearly goal and I figured this would be as good a novella as any to get me there.
NOW, the novella in itself shows again how Armstrong cannot write a bad book. It might not be to the taste of everyone, obviously, especially since she writes different characters along her series - and the novella format might feel lacking to some. But for me it was just as fascinating as her longer books. I think it's nice to read this before reading the next book in the series which focuses on Eve. I liked how distinct her voice felt, and I liked seeing how she and Kris met.
Two points i'd note however, and these probably come from the fact that this is barely 100 pages long: - We guess more than we are told why they fall in love, which is good but also limited - The reasoning behind the pregnancy is a bit flimsy. It really didn't make a lot of sense, and also, considering that the lore considers that Witches and Sorcerers aren't supposed to be able to conceive together, there was really no discussion of the point at all.
But it's hard to have issues with a novella, especially when the few there are come mainly from the fact that it does not have 500 pages to go over them. I wouldn't say it's essential to read it, but it gives a good idea of Eve's personality before getting into her book, and it's not long enough to discourage a quick read.
Bewitched tells the story of Eve, half witch and half demon, as she meets Kristoff Nast, a sorcerer from a very powerful and mafia-like family. Through monthly lessons of Eva teaching Kristoff basic spells and potions and Kristoff teaching Eva tips for being successful in the underground supernatural black market scene, they get to know each other more and more and Kristoff's chilly exterior slowly gives way to showing Eva his inner warmth.
The story, although it is short, gives a nice introduction to two new characters Eve and Kristoff, two individuals of rival supernatural classes. We really get to understand the overarching dynamics of the Nast family and how important business and family are to them, even if happiness is sacrificed in the process.
Bewitched is book 0.06, a short prequel in the Otherworld Stories, part of the Women of the Otherworld Series, found in Tales of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. This prequel is about Eve and Kristoff when they first met.
This was a back story of how Eve and Kristof Nast met. I've always loved Eve (her book was actually the first that I read of the series) so I was expecting this story to be entertaining. And engaging and funny it was, but it was also surprisingly touching. I have yet to read the last three books of the series (on Savannah) but I really hope we get to see Eve and Kristof in one shape or form.
Great short story about how Eve and Kris started their thing, and how it end, and yeah, it was sad for us, the reader, because we know what happens in books 2 and 3 and how those threads come together in 5.
A great story of Eve and how she becomes a dark arts witch and meets Kristof. Here we get to see how their relationship develops and what happened to end it. This one is a definite must read for followers of the Otherworld. Read as part of Tales of the Otherworld.
This short story definitely paints Eve in a more sympathetic light than she is seen in the novels, and it was great to see how she became the person that she did. Kris was all that I wanted him to be in this, and his father as monstrous as I'd imagined. This was very well written.
Oh I adore all of these meet up side stories, and this was one of the best - I love Eve and Kristof :) They could have an entire series to themselves, they are both so fun and intriguing.
