This story was a delight! Ellie and the orphan kids wrapped themselves around my heart from the start. All their wonderful quirks and their plight made me truly care about them and long for everything to work out perfectly. Sam is such a good hero. I loved how he cared for everyone, despite having just been hurt. The journey across the country proved eventful, but nothing like what comes later! This book also takes a look into the sad state of orphanages and orphan care and management at the time. Like Sam’s aunt, I was enraged. A good book makes you feel, and I had so many emotions on these pages!

If you love western romance, stories with orphans or quirky kids, protector MMCs, or characters who discover their worth… run and get a copy!

Light to My Path by Erica Vetsch moves through rattling railcars, thin winter air, and uncertain destinations, yet the deepest journey unfolds in the guarded places of the heart.

Eldora Carter walks forward with three children who have already learned how quickly security can vanish. As a former orphan now responsible for Phin, Tick, and Celeste, she carries more than luggage. She moves with the alertness of someone who no longer assumes tomorrow will look like today.

When she bends toward Phin and says, “… don’t worry about tomorrow. The Lord’s been taking care of us so far,” it sounds like something she has whispered in long, quiet nights. Her confidence rises from dependence on her faithful Savior.

Her prayer exposes the center of her life: “…Help me remember to seek Your will and to be content with You. Guard me against the danger of seeking love and approval in the wrong places. Light up the path where I’m supposed to go and keep me off the paths You know aren’t good for me.”

Sam Mackenzie enters wary, betrayal still fresh. On crowded platforms and in moments of danger, caution turns into protection. He steps forward. He remains. His care for Eldora, Phin, Tick, and Celeste grows through deliberate choice.

Phin’s boldness, Tick’s vulnerability, Celeste’s quiet presence … each child carries a longing to belong that presses gently against every scene. Their dignity remains intact. Their ache rests honestly on the page. Heartbreakingly, it simply exists.

Then comes the assurance: “…God would light her path when the time came. There was no need to borrow trouble.” That truth settles over the entire journey. Their destination unfolds step by step under the hand of a sovereign God.

God truly lit their path, one faithful step at a time.

I flew through reading this book! Light to my Path by Erica Vetsch is one of my favorite authors! This book had a unique plot- Sam Mackenzie (brother of David in book one) does a favor to his aunt to watch over Ellie and the orphans she is traveling with. The children were my absolute favorite!! I think Phin has his own book or novella in one of the other books in this series. Vetsch’s plots are always well written, characters are dynamic, and the romance is super sweet and focuses on the friendship. I loved that we go to see Sam’s brother, David and Karen in this book as well. I liked Sam’s character in book one, so it was so fun to see his story!
I also love the beautiful faith dynamics and realistic spiritual battles all the characters went through, besides the main hero and heroine. There’s always something within Vetsch’s stories that are honest and realistic-despite being fictional stories—reminders of God’s truth. A great example of how fiction can be truth-telling, or in this case-Gospel sharing.

This is the second book in the series. Sam was set to get married until he overhears a conversation from his intended of how she tricked him. Now he is headed home and promised his aunt to look after the three orphan children and their caretaker on the train ride there. Eldora is a 19 year old orphan who is taking 3 fellow orphans to a new orphanage. This proves harder than she thought when fights, theft and more from the children arise. Sam and Eldora work together to take care of the children and bring them safely to their destination. But plans change often in this story.
I really enjoyed this story. I loved how much Sam was willing to help the children despite the difficulties. He was so loving and considerate towards them. I loved the kids, they were a great part of the story! Eldora and Sam worked well together and I loved the happy ending. Good Christian content. Overall a great story and I recommend.

Light to my Path (Brides of the West Book 8) by Erica Vetsch is another Mackenzie brother’s story. Sam is doing a favor for his aunt in helping three orphans and their caregiver to travel across country. He has given up on true love and focuses solely on the family silver mining business. Meanwhile, Eldora Carter’s focus is on caring for the children and keeping them safe until they reach their new orphanage. Danger is on the journey, so Sam is very much needed. As these two adults work together, they find that God may have plans for their lives that includes love instead of loneliness. A faith-based story with adventure, danger, learning to trust, God’s grace, love and three precious children.

Light to My Path by Erica Vetsch is a Christian Historical Romance.

hat happens when a man who refuses to trust and a woman who refuses to depend on anyone are forced onto the same perilous journey?

This tender and tension-filled Christian historical romance delivers heart, danger, and a love story that feels both hard-won and deeply satisfying.

Sam Mackenzie, a hero who’s done with love, has already learned his lesson about beautiful faces and broken promises. After ending an engagement to a fortune-hunting socialite, he’s poured his energy into the family mining business and locked his heart behind walls of caution and pride.

Escorting three orphans and their caretaker across the country was supposed to be a simple favor.

It’s anything but.

From the moment he meets Eldora Carter, Sam finds himself unsettled—not by flirtation or charm, but by quiet strength, fierce loyalty, and a compassion that costs her everything. Watching her pour herself into children the world has discarded forces him to confront his own shallow assumptions about worth.

And the more danger they face, the harder it becomes to keep his heart uninvolved.

Eldora Carter, a heroine who refuses to be rescued, doesn’t need saving. A former orphan herself, she knows what it’s like to be unwanted—and she’s determined the three children in her care will never feel that way again.

She depends on no one.

Not for provision.
Not for protection.
And certainly not for love.

When their rail journey turns dangerous, she has no choice but to accept Sam’s help. But relying on him means risking something far more frightening than physical harm. It means opening her heart to a man who belongs to a world she could never imagine herself in.

Her courage isn’t loud or dramatic—it’s steady, sacrificial, and deeply moving.

The author creates a romance forged in fire throughout this book. The tension in this story isn’t just emotional—it’s situational. The cross-country rail setting adds urgency and atmosphere, and the moments of danger genuinely raise the stakes.

What makes the romance shine is how naturally it develops. It grows through:

Shared responsibility
Protective instincts
Late-night conversations
Small, selfless choices
This isn’t insta-love. It’s trust built plank by plank.

And that makes the payoff incredibly satisfying.

As someone who appreciates faith woven organically into a story, I loved the spiritual undercurrent here. The message is clear without being heavy-handed:

God redeems broken pasts.
True beauty is revealed through character.
Love requires courage.
The story gently reminds us that sometimes the biggest leap of faith isn’t stepping into danger—it’s allowing yourself to be cherished.

Final Thoughts
This is the kind of romance that leaves you smiling long after you turn the last page. With adorable children, real emotional depth, and a love story shaped by sacrifice and growth, it’s both heartwarming and compelling.

If you enjoy protective heroes, resilient heroines, and faith-filled historical romances that blend tenderness with tension, this journey is absolutely worth taking.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Because sometimes the most dangerous journey isn’t across the country—it’s from fear to love.

So if you enjoy Christian historical romances, check out Light to My Path by Erica Vetsch.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

I’ve loved every book in this binge-worthy Brides of the West series! Light to My Path is an exciting, heartwarming journey full of twists & turns. Erica Vetsch brings all the charm, endearing characters, & sweet romance in this latest story.

After discovering his fiancée is a conniving gold digger, Sam Mackenzie heads back West to focus on his family’s wealthy mining business. But along the way, his aunt tasks him with accompanying three orphans & their caretaker across the country to Denver. He definitely has his hands full. Each orphan needs special care, & their beautiful caretaker quickly captures his attention & admiration.

At 19, Eldora Carter has aged out of the orphanage but is forced to return after a run-in with her latest employer’s son. With no room for her there & nowhere else to go, she agrees to escort three orphans across the U.S. to a new orphanage in Denver. Their journey is fraught with peril, & Eldora is forced to rely on Sam to help care for her charges. Though she’s drawn to the handsome, compassionate man, the wide chasm between their social statuses keeps her guarding her heart.

I loved this story! Each of the orphans touched my heart. Celeste, born with a cleft palate, hides herself away but has the sweetest disposition. Tink has a serious heart condition yet remains incredibly resilient. Phin is a talented pickpocket who’s always in trouble but fiercely loyal to Tink & Celeste, holding out hope his uncle will return for him. These children tug at Sam’s heartstrings, & as he gets to know them, it becomes impossible for him to ignore their plight. I especially loved seeing how well he and “Ellie” work together to care for each child. Their romance grows naturally & gradually as they journey West.

Their train ride is filled with danger as they face brutal weather & unexpected threats. Trust & faith are essential if they’re going to survive.

Highly recommend! Though part of a series, it’s easily read as a standalone, but is more enjoyable if you’ve read the other books in the series. I received an advanced copy from the publisher, but also purchased through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.

A young woman who grew up in the orphanage is the center of this story. Eldora has endured the pain of not being wanted but has such a big heart. She soon finds herself in charge of three young orphans destined for an adventure. I really liked how Eldora took her responsibilities well. I couldn’t wait to see what God has planned for her.

Sam was so close to marrying when he overhears his fiancé saying unkind words about him behind his back. When he confronts her she tries to convince him she didn’t mean it. I laughed at his departing words to her. You must read the book to find out what he said. Now he finds himself on a train helping Eldora and her charges reach their destination safely.

The shenanigans of the children on the train are so funny that I had to stop reading at times. Underneath their many moments of chaos lies three young children who want to be adopted so bad. They desire to be part of a family and feel secure. I think Sam was having second thoughts at times when the children constantly are in trouble.

Set against a backdrop of countryside the story focuses on relationships, trust, faith and hope for our characters. I love how the author brings emotions to her stories as we witness their many challenges. The ending is just what I hoped for and delivers a sense of new beginnings.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Light To My Path is a sweet historical fiction novel with plenty of romance and fun to keep you reading until the end. This is one of those author’s where you know if her name is on a novel that it will be a nice and sweet read. No death and destruction, just mild suspense and a sweet romance set in the past.

In this novel, we meet our hero, Sam, who is a wealthy mine owner. He’s broken it off with a socialite who was just after his money and pretty much sworn off romance. Of course, he didn’t count on falling for Eldora. She’s an orphan herself who is caring for three orphans now. They’re travelling by rail, and it gets a bit treacherous.

Sam steps in to help her and care for he,r and gets a glimpse of a life foreign to him.

I loved the glimpse of the orphans and what life was like for them during the time period. The orphan train years have always been a favorite of mine to read about. Ellie is a sweet character, and I loved getting to know her and seeing Sam grow and evolve as well.

This is a wonderful novel and I hope you take the time to read it!

The beautiful Christmas vibes in Light to My Path by Erica Vetsch are just one of the many things I liked about this book. Following Sam, David’s younger brother from the first book, turned into quite the emotional ride. Though different from the first book, I found this one just as captivating.

The characters, with their endearing qualities, brought the hardships of orphanhood in those times into sharp focus. The surge of protectiveness, a silent roar in the heart of our hero, warmed my heart when the vulnerable faced hardship in the book. Endearing, the story served as a gentle whisper, urging readers to consider the value inherent in all life, mirroring the welcoming embrace of Christian hospitality.

Though it was a quick read, it definitely left its mark. As you read through the chapters, the theme of looking at the heart instead of appearance becomes increasingly apparent. The plot thickens with action toward the end, as the beloved characters face perilous circumstances. Though the orphans’ plight takes center stage, a tender romance unfolds with a constant, understated energy. The ending was sweetly satisfying and humbly convicting, leaving me with a warm feeling and a lot to think about. And yes, it was enough to promote a single tear or two. Erica Vetsch consistently delivers, and this historical romance is another captivating story.

One of THE BEST books I've read in a very long time!

This one is about four orphans being shunted to another orphanage out west - in Denver. They're being cast off because they're undesirable - one is too old, another a thief/pickpocket, another has a heart condition and the last a cleft palate.

Sam is the wealthy son of a mining tycoon who's aunt is newly on the board of the orphanage and is staunchly against this transfer. She asks him to watch the four on the journey... but she has NO idea what she's asking. Sam finds himself in the middle of fistfights, rushing to the hospital, deciding whether to bail one out of jail, dealing with angry passengers, having every heartstring tugged, and - like icing on cake - trapped in an avalanche!

The book is an amazing adventure, with beautiful characterization and non-stop craziness that makes everyone in the story dear. The verses are great, the family connections are sweet... the whole thing is just fantastic. I can't say enough good about this.

NOTE: This is the SECOND book in a trilogy. The first book is 'Before the Dawn', and every bit as good, I promise. But there's no indication that this is part of a series in the book, and that is a minor peeve of mine. This CAN be read as a stand-alone, but you will come away with the sense that there might've been a story written about his brother, before.

This is a story of orphans, broken hearts, train rides, and new beginnings. Sam Mackenzie is reeling after finding out about the truth of the lies his fiancé spun. He is justifiably angry and plans to stay away from any romantic encounters for the time being. His aunt gives him an assignment to help those less unfortunate than him.

Eldora Carter is an orphan who has grown out of the orphanage. However, as a young woman trying to make it in this world, too many have tried to take advantage of her. Now she is tasked with seeing three orphans, one troubled and the other two with health conditions, to another orphanage. Here is where she meets Sam as he will be escorting them.

On their journey, this group begins to let down their walls as they look out for one another. Through fights, miscommunications, and danger, this little group begins to become a family of sorts. What awaits them at the end of their journey is one that not one of them even thought possible.

This was a lovely story of family found, a true love, and new beginnings especially as these characters learned to open their battered hearts to true joy.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Light to my Path is the 8th book in the Brides of the West series by Erica Vetsch. This story previously was part of the author's Colorado Dawn series. While this is a great stand-alone story, it does contain characters from the previous book in the series. Eldora has lost yet another job and has nowhere to go other than the orphanage she has outgrown. The owner decides to send her off with three young children. They find themselves on the same train as Sam, the nephew of a new board member. His aunt asks him to help Eldora and the children to get to their new home.

This is a nicely written story that is easy to read and enjoy. The story is so inspirational in how Sam quickly helps care for Eldora and the children. While he is asked to help them, he does so much more. He makes sure the children have a safe place on the train, he makes sure they get fed, gets them warm clothes and sees to their medical needs. When the group gets turned away from the new orphanage, he takes them to his brother's home for the Christmas holiday. I really enjoyed reading this story. I enjoyed how determined Eldora was to care for the children and how quickly Sam and his family reached out to them.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

What a heartfelt story that I enjoyed reading. I’m not usually a western romance genre. I’m a huge fan of Erica Vetsch books and I knew it be a great story. This is the second book in the “Brides of the West” series. I have not read the first book in the series. Light to My Path was just as delightful without the first book which focuses on David.

Sam Mackenzie is an all around good guy. He is just days away from getting married. While he is waiting in the foyer for his future wife Sam over hears a conversation with his fiancé and mother-in-law. He was left stunned and upset by the conversation and confronts them. He leaves the home with no engagement and a different future set before him that he imagined.

Sam’s aunt works at an orphanage and has asked Sam if he would escort and assist a young woman Elle and three children as they are transported to a new orphanage in another state.

Eldora (Elle) spent many years in the orphanage and now just trying to survive. When she gets fired from her job she goes back to the orphanage to see if they can assist her. Instead she is given charge to three children Phin, Tick, and Celeste and takes them to Denver. She already knows the children and they are fond of Elle. Sam is not what she expects and he is unlike any wealthy person she has met. Elle is very guarded and doesn’t see herself as anything special.

Sam can’t help to not come to care for the children and even Elle. Elle doesn’t aspect anything from him and is grateful for everything.

The journey is nothing but simple as the plight ends up one adventure after another. There are many unexpected events along the way. The children will melt your heart. The characters are well developed in a short novel. My only disappointment was it ended so fast. I wanted more after they arrived at their destination.

I received this complimentary product in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Orphans in a plight to make a way in the world with nothing to their names begins this story. Heartless caretakers and authorities in an orphanage make the lives of three children and a woman not much older herself miserable. Although I knew it was fiction it still broke my heart how they were treated and given very little to eat. Now they were all being sent to another orphanage on a long train ride to a big city. Sam Mackenzie is asked to escort them on their trip by his aunt, a new board member at the orphanage. It is a harrowing trip with misbehavior, sickness and their young guardian counting her meager pennies. Most of the story is told about their train ride and all the circumstances that befall them along the way. I shed a few tears as I read. Some sad but some happy tears as well. This story grabbed ahold of me and I felt as though I was riding right along with them. What an adventure!

This is book eight in the Brides of the West series and I find the stories captivating but this one especially touched my heart as my mom lived in an orphanage for eleven years. I loved how this story developed and was so heart touching. The character development in a quick read was wonderful and I found it a very satisfying read. The sweet romance that develops and the antics of the orphan children keeps you turning pages quickly and not wanting it to end at the same time. I was immediately invested in this story and drawn in by all the twists and turns. The author does a wonderful job of describing the feelings and thoughts of Eldora and the three orphans. You will enjoy taking a train journey with Eldora, Sam, and the children on the train in 1885 as it is a journey of faith, trust, and finding the path God has set before you. I highly recommend delving into this book as you will be entertained.

When Ellie is tasked with taking three orphaned children across the country, little did she know she’d need so much help. Sam Mackenzie has been asked to see that Ellie and the children are situated before he retires to his own private train car, but he gets involved right away when things get out of hand with the children. While Sam didn’t plan on getting involved as much as he did, he was just what Ellie and the children needed. I throughly enjoyed watching Sam help Ellie to see that she was special and precious.

Things I loved:
rambunctious boys
sweet little girl
kisses only romance
found family
faith thread

I highly recommend this novella to readers of all ages who enjoy historical romance with humor sprinkled throughout and a happy ending. It is part of the Brides of the West series but can be read as a standalone. I have loved the other books I have read and look forward to reading more.

I really liked Eldora in Light to My Path. I felt for her and imagined what I would feel if I was in her place. She is kindhearted and I admire how she shows her inner strength and faith despite her hurts or hardships. Sam is also a likeable character, and the orphaned children are easy to love as well. I enjoy stories where the characters become real and stay with me after I finish reading.

This touching story is full of faith, love, trust, hope, and strength. It fits well with the rest of the series, but you can also enjoy it on its own.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who loves uplifting stories and memorable characters.

This Christian historical fiction book, set in the year 1885, has a beautiful storyline. I enjoyed the sweet and clean romance between Sam and Ellie, the two main characters, but it was the three younger orphans that captured my heart. Although this is not an “orphan train” story, the five of them still have a remarkable journey across the country together. The author did a great job with the setting up the backstory of each of the characters, and I loved seeing how the adults and children drew closer together as God provided “a light for their path”.

There’s much to be learned from this book about how we treat and view those less fortunate than us. It’s also a great reminder that no matter our background, God is the Redeemer of our story who loves us and longs to guide us in His best path for us.

I have had the pleasure to read the first seven books from the Brides of the West series by Erica Vetsch. I was excited to have the chance to read the eighth installment called Light to my Path. I adored the story between Eldora and Sam. I enjoyed getting to know the two and was honored to take this journey with them. I thought it was a wonderful tale.

I am going to give Light to my Path five years. I recommend it for readers who love to read sweet and clean historical romance. I look forward to the next installment from Erica Vetsch's Brides of the West series, Stars in her Eyes, to see what delightful tale awaits.

:"Light To My Path" by Erica Vetsch was another great story by this author. It wasn't always a light read because it deals with orphans and the struggles they face. This book is part of a series, but each book is a standalone. These books share the message of faith. I liked this book because Sam is from St. Louis, a real town that is close to where I live and a town that I have actually visited many times. Another reason why I liked this book is because of the children, (my favorite kind of people.) and because 4 of my 6 grandkids are adopted, so orphans and adopted and foster children melt my heart. I wanted to get inside the book and actually yell at some of the characters for the way they acted and the words they spoke.

I received a complementally copy from the author and celebrate lit and these opinions are my own.

Sweet, Sweet Story!

Eldora and Sam have a very unique introduction. Sam is part of a wealthy mine owning family. Eldora is an orphan, aged out of the orphanage and having trouble keeping a job. Sam sees her on a bench outside of the orphanage director's office. He gives her a box of chocolates. By some miracle and with the help of his aunt, Sam is thrust into being responsible for Eldora and three orphans with extra special needs. I loved how big Sam's heart was despite his recent betrayal by his former fiancee. I loved how he called Eldora "Ellie". I loved Ellie's feelings for Sam. Tender and new, she's not sure how she will handle a broken heart when their time together comes to an end.Speaking of ends, this story has a fantastic, big ending! Loved it!

I felt so full of love for these people. Rejected orphans sent away on a train, because they had disabilities. Eldora was one of them, older now and tasked with getting them to the next orphanage. Sam's Aunt tasked him with watching over them. Quite the trip, with serious struggles along the way for these who felt so unwanted. Beautiful story. You have to have your own opinions as to how it should go, becoming fully involved to the precious end.

This is the 8th book in the Brides of the West series, but the 2nd in the group featuring the Mackenzie family. I would suggest reading David and Karen's story before reading this one to get the whole picture of their family. I found the book to be well written and a quick read. I liked watching Sam interacting with the children. I did find it a little like a dropped thread that it wasn't a bigger deal/interference with their romance, when you find out that Eldora's father died in a mining accident. It was barely mentioned and Sam never knew. There is a nice biblical faith thread. I look forward to reading more books by Erica Vetsch.

I have been enjoying these stories by Erica Vetsch. I liked how they show people discovering what God has in store for them and helping them to see their worth. I liked how this story showed Ellie learning that there are good men in the world and they can be kind. I also liked how Sam found someone who was kind and wasn’t after him for his wealth. I liked how they worked together for the betterment of the children and how they helped them find a home. I thought this was a good story and would recommend these books.

I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors.  A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.

Brides of the West book 8

I was so excited when i finished reading 'Before the Dawn' and found this book with Sam MacKenzie the brother to David
and the characters i met in the book. I could not decide which is the best i Loved them both.

Sam had just broke up with his money hungry fiancee after hearing her talking to her Mother about him. He then was asked to accompany a young woman with three children to an orphanage in Denver and he accepted. Eldora was an orphan that had aged out and she had her hands full with Phin, Tick, and Celeste. But this trip is going to change their lives.

I enjoyed this story which shows how when something happens that changes your entire future and must have faith and trust in God. David’s life is forever changed and his fears are keeping him from letting Karen in. Karen loves David and is doing her best to help him. Their patience is stretched thin but their love will survive.

The story is interesting and has a mystery to solve. We watch Karen suffer from many things and we see David finally step up and be the man he needs to be.

I recommend this book.

Best read of 2026

Orphans. I’m a sucker for a plucky orphan story, and this book has 4 of them.
I was hooked from the first page. Erica Vetsch always delivers, but I haven’t enjoyed a book so much since The Gentleman Spy-which I read 6 times and listened to 3 within a month.
Ellie, Sam, Phil, Tick, and Celeste are perfection.

Ellie and Sam

This is the 8th book in the brides of the West series but the second book in the trilogy of this family. The author does a great job interweaving two people's lives and allowing their faith to grow as they grow closer together. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

Love the historical fiction with a Christian faith emphasis. Relatable characters working out their faith through challenging life circumstances. Book 2 of 4 about the McKenzie family and Martin City, CO. Always enjoy Erica's stories, both American West and Regency settings.
