Werewolf Sentinels #1

Awakened from Ice

Rate this book
Book one in the Werewolf Sentinels series.

Exploring an ice cave on the Mantanuska Glacier in Alaska, Cassidy finds something out of the ordinary—six men dressed in fur and leather, motionless and seemingly dead. But she soon discovers they’re very much alive when her touch awakens one—and she finds herself pinned beneath his muscular heat in the blink of an eye.

Edensaw and his wolf brothers have slept for ten thousand years. As ice age Tlingit Indian hunters, they were chosen to be a new race of man, the first werewolves. They are the sentinels, created to protect against evil that is to come. But the touch of one woman ignites his mating urge and Edensaw awakens before he’s needed, into a world he no longer knows and a passion he cannot deny.

As the couple moves from lust to love, the dark evil brews, threatening not only to destroy the mating bond, but the sentinels themselves.

As interesting and exciting as a tax form. With the added minus that the latter is better written and thought.

"Awakened From Ice" ~ 3 Stars

It's a nice start to the series. The sentinel's have been sleeping for ten thousand years and are the first of their kind. I liked Edensaw and his wolf brothers as well as Cassidy.

Edensaw knows from the start that Cassidy is his mate. I like that Edensaw does not try to force Cassidy to become his mate. He lets her decided when and if she will be his mate. I also like the Wolf Brothers reactions to there new world and how they want to learning and try new things. "He turned back to the view. It looked as if he and his wolf brothers would have a lot of adjusting to do. Their knowledge as hunters wasn't exactly going to be of much use in this strange, new world."

We don't get a lot of time with the different wolf brothers or the local pack, but from what we do see of the characters is interesting. We also get a brief glimpse of the evil that the sentinels were created to stop, but it wasn't very fleshed out.

**Warning: slightly spoilerish***

I can't say this one impressed me. I really don't like having to be critical of anyone's work, but this one brought out all my snarky comments. Good thing I was reading alone, otherwise I would have sounded a little less than sane to the casual observer.

I have three primary complaints: the writing was clunky, the dialogue was stiff and the story was full of holes—small holes that didn't undermine the actual plot, but were still irritants. Things like the time Cassidy suggested Edensaw shift to his wolf form so that the person he was speaking to could see that it was different that a modern werewolf's. Problem was, neither she nor Edensaw had ever seen a modern werewolf, so how did she know his form would be different? Or the fact that the 'wolf brothers' (I got seriously tired of that phrase BTW) had the ability to 'listen to the world' as they slept so they would fit in when they woke. This enabled them to speak fluently, with a large and varied vocabulary but then they randomly didn't know some words. Camping and money to mind. I would think money would have features in some of that listening they did.

The book also featured a "PNR kiss". You know the one I mean. The one a woman is subjected to mere moments after meeting a man she is frightened of and then melts into. Yes, that one. In this case it came two minutes after Cassidy was tackled, then help against her will by a man who was speaking crazy mumbo jumbo and scaring the bejesus out of her. But worst of all, all I could think was, the man's been asleep for 10,000 years and hasn't brushed his teeth yet. He must have the worst morning breath ever. Ewww.

I then spent a full 75% of the book waiting for the mysterious evil to show up. That's 75% of the book waiting for the plot to move past first love/lust. At 75% a challenge finally presented itself, just not the one in the description. That literally held off until the last page—seriously, the last page!

Now, none of this is to say that the book is wholly without merit. I did appreciate the focus put on Edensaw's insistence that Cassidy have the control of when to accept him and become his mate. Similarly, Cassidy was given an unusual amount of control during the sex scenes. It all felt a bit clumsily done, but I really liked the sentiment. I also thought it was nice to see an Alpha male who wasn't al ALPHAed out. I actually found Edensaw quite pleasant. In fact most of the characters were really likeable, even if they weren't particularly fleshed out. I also thought some of the brother's adjustments to modern technology were funny, in a slapstick kind of way.

So in the end I have to say that there is an interesting spark to this story, but the execution seems to have called through.

When Cassidy goes for her annual walk on the glacier and decides to explore an ice cave, she hardly expects to find frozen men in it! Nor does she expect them to wake at her touch, or that one of them would pin her to the ground in a very arousing manner. Edensaw is a werewolf sentinel, designed to protect the world from a future evil.

The prose needs tightening and trimming—I could tell from the first page. For instance, too many insignificant actions/movements are described. The book really should have started from when she’s about to find the men (or at least from the middle of the glacier), not her journey from the recreation site to the glacier to the cave. Additionally, the sentence structures themselves tend to be clunky or choppy in structure.

The description is lazy, often missing opportunities to draw in the reader. One example comes to mind: “Cassidy could only describe the glacier as spectacular.” Aside from the glacier being big, this is our descriptor, a vague adjective. Evoking imagery could have grounded readers in the setting and infused the story with a mood, such as the promise of mystery.

I could not related to either Edensaw or Cassidy. I felt locked out of their thoughts and distanced. I have no idea who they are, what they liked to do, and scarcely anything about their pasts. They read like cardboard, having no depth, and were insta-attracted to each other.

Even halfway into the book I didn’t feel any tension, neither in the relationship between Edensaw and Cassidy nor in the development of the mysterious evil force. Cassidy’s decision to was too easy. Only at 75% did a hint of potential tension appear. .

1.5 stars, rounding up out of generosity.

I don't think I'll read the next books in this serie.
Some details in this book don't suit me, I'm not in "immortal" things, or the way the heroin is turned.

3 stars because it's a basic werewolf story, not amazing but not so bad !

My Thoughts:
Awakened from Ice begins with Cassidy taking a solo trek to through the Mantanuska Glacier in Alaska. Her love for this particular glacier has brought her to it for the last five years. Deciding to take a more challenging trek, she deviated from her typical path and explored the Mantanuska Glacier cave in the Chugach Mountains. Her trek is beautiful and uneventful until she spies a small hole inside one of the cave walls. Curiosity getting the better of her, Cassidy explores the hole with her hand. When she encounters no ice resistance at the end of her fingers she pulls out her flashlight to peer inside the hole and sees something on the other side. Even more curious now, Cassidy uses her ice tool to open the hole further so she can slide through it. She is shocked to discover six Ice-Age men laid out on fur pallets on the other side. Thinking that they are dead and frozen, she cautiously approaches them. She finds that they are all strikingly handsome but one man in particular draws her attention. Cassidy hesitantly looks at each man. Not sure what she should do, she touches the first man's hand and discovers that he is warm to the touch...not frozen solid as he should be. Cassidy approaches each subsequent man and encounters the same phenomena. They are all warm -- alive -- almost as if they are sleeping. As she approaches the last man, she traces his handsome features with her eyes. This one she doesn't touch by hand. With him, she slowly trails her fingers down his cheek. Almost instantly, his eyes snap open and he pins her underneath him.

Umm...Houston, we have a problem! Cassidy is horrified to encounter the man alive and herself now trapped. The man -- Edensaw -- inhales Cassidy's sent and instantly knows that he has been awakened by his mate. Quite content to continue to inhale her intoxicating scent, Edensaw does not move off of Cassidy until she implores him to do so. Understanding her perfectly because of the gift to "listen" indued by his tribe's Shaman, he moves off of her but firmly holds onto her wrist so that she remains near him.

Edensaw wakens his sleeping brothers -- Ketah, Wachel, Kajakti, Durlach, and Capac -- with a howl. The men rise instantly and begin discussing their current situation in Tlingit, the language of their tribe. Edensaw explains to Cassidy who they are -- immortal werewolf warriors put to sleep to fight the coming darkness -- and she does not believe one word of his claim. Edensaw seizes the opportunity to "make her believe" and he kisses her blind. Breaking apart from their kiss, Cassidy sees that his eyes are glowing, a sign of his wolf's arousal. Stunned, Cassidy understands that the men are different but she still feels as if they are a bit nuts. Cassidy agrees to take the men to her campsight and after settling in the men shift and show her that they are who and what they say they are. Cassidy's life is forever changed in that moment and she is thrust into a journey of discovering passion and uncovering treachery.

The story is a solid entrance into the new Werewolf Sentinels series by Marisa Chenery. I liked the characters and the overall story. Edensaw was sweet in his primative-come-modern-man way. The pace of the story was well done as was the warriors integration into the "new world". The only thing that I had a slight issue with was the shaman giving them the ability to "listen" to the world around them during the ages. Ten-thousand year old men speaking perfect English? Nah, not really believable but hey, it's fiction...right?

I will keep the series on by to-read radar because I'm curious to see how the remaining warriors will respond when they discover their mates too.

In a nutshell: This novella length book comes with a hefty price-tag of $5 (for only 105 pages) but it was a quick and enjoyable read.

Awakened From Ice by Marisa Chenery is a rather unique story with a plot line that has not been visited overly much, as some paranormal plots have been. Within this story, we meet six chiseled and hot guys who have been asleep in an ice cave for thousands of years. This is no typical type of sleep, but one that allows each of the men to intuitively know what is going on around them and the changes that the world has been going through. When placed in this sleep, they were told that they would not awaken until they were needed in the world – needed to fight a dangerous evil.

When Cassidy goes exploring and discovers a hole in a wall of ice, she works her way through until she finds herself within the cave and facing six very strangely dressed men who she worries are dead – that is until they suddenly begin to stir and awaken. From that moment on, Cassidy experiences things that she never thought remotely possible or within in the realm of her beliefs.

Though the story is fairly far-fetched (hey, it is a paranormal fiction story), it is very enjoyable and engrossing. I loved the uniqueness of it, the characters are all incredibly likable, there are tons of steamy scenes, humor and a good dose of suspense. The chemistry between Cassidy and Edensaw is palpable and spicy and his devotion to her will bring many hearts thudding and pulses racing. In addition to wonderfully developed characters, Awakened From Ice has a vivid setting, created and written in a way that brought me directly into the story. Another aspect that I enjoyed was the idea that this story took me back to the history and the very beginning of the first breed of werewolves – later expanding to how they have revolutionized over thousand of years.

I recommend this to anyone who loves spicy chemistry, hot alpha males, loyalty, devotion and the rockin world of the paranormal and werewolves. I truly cannot wait until the next story in this series and the next brother to find his mate, as well as delving deeper into the suspense of the good vs. evil aspect of the story. Awakened From Ice has the perfect ending to leave the reader wanting more and anxious for the next story!

Interesting. On an annual hiking trip to the Alaskan Mantanuska glacier, Cassidy finds six ancient Tlingit warriors sleeping frozen in an ice cave. When they awaken, one of them claims to be her mate and that they are werewolves. She ends up taking them back with her to her home in Juneau where they learn to live in 21st century and find the modern pack wolves.

It seems that this is sort of a pre-series to the ‘Wulf’s Den’ & ‘Roxie’s Protectors’ series, though I would read this after them to understand their world best. This has the explanation of how the werewolves came to be, but the stories take place in our time.

I love the frozen in ice angle and their introduction our modern world is hilarious. But Cassidy’s reaction to them is a lot more realistic than the mates for the other series were. Even though born thousands of years ago, Edenshaw and his brothers have a much better viewpoint toward their mates and mortals than modern werewolves do. Maybe modern males are too civilized.

Quick thought: 1)I have a real problem with the locations in this series. It says that Cassidy lives near Juneau which is in that little tail that extends down along Canada toward Washington. When you Google the glacier and the park where Cassidy found the hunters: Mantanuska Glacier State Recreation Site, its way up above Anchorage about 500 miles as the crow flies. More if you’re driving. Yet Cassidy takes the guys back to her home in Juneau and the story makes it sound like a fairly short trip.

2)Also Glennallen where Cassidy went to buy them clothes is about 75 miles to the east of the park while a town the same size is 25 miles to the west. Why didn't she go there? I hate it when authors don’t really pay attention to the details.

Fave Scenes: seat belts, parking garage and Cassidy’s change.

A nice start to the series! Cassidy is hiking in Alaska when she finds six men ‘asleep’ in an ice cave. When she gets close to one he wakes up, claiming she’s his mate and that he and his wolf brothers have been sleeping for ten thousand years. Of course Cassidy doesn’t believe him but once they prove to her what they say is true she goes about helping them find the local werewolves and acclimating to the current century.

I don’t always love ‘love at first sight’ romances because it’s not very realistic. However, Chenery did a nice job here of making the mates fated but making the love grow. Cassidy and Edensaw were very compatible as I am assuming the other wolves will be with there mates. It was nice to see him be the alpha of his pack, a strong and capable man, but still give Cassidy time to get to know and accept him before he claimed and changed her. In fact, he leaves both decisions up to her which was nice. I didn’t care for how formal Edensaw was most of the time. I would have liked him and his sentinel’s to have relaxed a little more and be more personable. I think the author wrote them this way to show how they would have been at the time they were put to sleep. I did like how, as the story progressed, they became more laid back and joked making them more personable.

We don’t get a lot of time with the sentinel’s one on one or the local pack. What we do see of these characters is interesting and I am looking forward to the sentinel’s meeting their mates. We get a brief glimpse of the evil that Edensaw and his sentinel brothers were created to stop but it wasn’t very fleshed out. I think we will get more into that as the series progresses with each sentinel.

I found this story to have an interesting premise for a werewolf series. The author did a great job of showing the reader how uncomfortable ice age men would be in the twenty first century. It was refreshing to see our world through the eyes of someone seeing it for the first time. Marisa Chenery also used a clever explanation to bring the wolf brothers into our time with some current knowledge.

The story had a great pace to it and the characters are interesting. This is the first story in a series so there was a lot of setting up to do. Marisa Chenery sets up this new world with good and evil werewolves, pack politics, immortality, and mates yet to be found for the other wolf brothers.

In this story, Awakened from Ice, we get to learn about Cassidy and Edensaw’s mating. Cassidy is the woman that finds the wolf brothers and is instantly attracted to Edensaw. Edensaw recognizes her as his mate and goes to great lengths to prove it to Cassidy with patience, understanding, and of course erotic steamy love making. It was fascinating to see the progression of Cassidy becoming a pack member before she even knew what that meant. To Cassidy it was like she was inheriting a big family.

Awakened from Ice is a paranormal romance with splashes of humor that keep the pages turning and the reader engaged. I look forward to seeing where this series goes from here.

Cassidy enjoys climbing around the glaciers, at Mantanuska Glacier in Alaska. This time around, she will discover something more than she bargained for–a Tingit Hunter and his brothers.

Chosen to be the first werewolves, Edensaw and his brothers have been incased in ice for thousands of years, waiting for the evil to come. Before evil can awaken them, Edensaw smells his mate and cannot avoid awakening and claiming her for his own.

Cassidy is shocked by the sexy man she finds incased in ice, but his claim of being her mate shocks her even further. Finally accepting Edensaw and his wolf brothers, she is determined to assist them the best she can, which may mean giving up Edensaw, to allow him to reclaim his heritage and his people, in order to save them from the evil that lurks.

Awakened by Ice is a heart stopping sexy read, which will melt the most cynic of hearts. Cassidy is a strong woman, worthy of the love of her hero. Edensaw is a man worthy of the trust of his people, even after thousands of years. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the Tingit world and look forward to visiting it often in the rest of the Werewolf Sentinels Series.

This was a very well written story. Though this book was a little more than I would normally pay for a shorter story (just over 100 pages) the quality made up for the length.

Chenery did a fabulous job of putting a lot of detail in a short book without it feeling like a history lesson or nothing but a foundation story with no body. After reading this book, I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what this world is like and what to expect in future books.

The only reason this was not 5 stars for me is because at the peak of the story where the villain of this particular story makes his move it seemed like it was really rushed.

If you are setting on the wall with this book, wondering if it’s worth the price for a 100 page book, I would advise you to go for it.

Awakened from Ice is for people who...

...don't mind a fast-paced story.
...enjoy Alpha-male shapeshifters.
...like when main male characters have no issues with public nudity.
...enjoy naughty touching in semi-public places.
...like a little dire in their wolf.

I got a kick out of this one. Considering Marisa Chenery's other books have been hit or miss with me, I'm counting that as a win.

It started out exciting, sexy and full of promise. I like a lot of sexual tension, but I didn't find it here. The female protagonist resisted complete intercourse but still indulged in oral sex with her intended mate - I just didn't feel the heat. Other than being possessive the Pack's Alpha was not an Alpha male at all. The real plot didn't develop until the end of the novel and then it was rushed. I will read the next book in the series if it goes down in price! The story just wasn't worth what I paid for it.

I liked this book. I love paranormal erotic romance. this book was pretty fast paced. I would have liked to know more about the men and where they came from, but over all this was a very well written book and I read it pretty fast. I will have to look for the 2nd book and get it and read it too. it had just enough erotica and information about each character to want more.

I really enjoyed this quick read! I'm not usually paranormal kind of girl, but this was a unique story. It was fast paced, interesting, and just enough sexy ;)
I do have to say that I think it's rather odd, the ONLY status update I submitted questioned when the "bad guys"would show up and voila-75% is when the action starts. (and now I'm off to read the 2nd installment)

1.5-2.5 Stars. Free book. I skimmed to the end but it's about what you'd expect from a free adult book. Lots of foreplay and eventually sex with a dash of story to tie everything together. Truth be told I really didn't read it enough to rate it.

This retelling of the werewolf legend was good. I loved the hot native American alpha male. Also the white American woman was a different kind of interracial romance that I normally read. It was a great story though.
