It’s a Gothic welcome-to-autumn thrill-ride featuring Morganville’s hottest newlyweds, Eve and Michael – written in the POV of Mrs. Eve Glass.
It was probably inevitable I’d get around to writing about carnivals and Morganville, right? Yeah. I thought so, too. But this one is unique, even so, in that I have Michael and Eve off on a mission together, from Amelie. Hijinks and life-threatening danger may ensue. Also, a brand-new vampire character that I really need to explore more, because I liked him a lot. Fun factoid: I used to work in a haunted house – not a carnival but one of those seasonal death traps that was set up fast and taken down faster, run by virtual amateurs. Working as a character in them is fine for me, because I’m in on the mystery and the joke, but I am completely unable to handle haunted houses any other way as ‘fun’. They really do creep me out. Also, I got stuck in one of the secret passages of that seasonal haunted house once, and nobody notices or cares if you’re banging on the door and yelling for help when everyone is screaming already. (Yes, I intend to write that murder mystery, someday.)
Can I get a ‘hell yeah’ for one of the better short stories we are given?
So the stories we are given for each of the vampires are relatively dull, giving us hardly anything. The Shane stories aren’t that great either (although that mostly mirrors my feelings towards Shane). Yet the Eve stories… yeah, we need more Eve stories.
This is a dark tale, detailing a very unique event. In truth this could have made a book, there was so much potential for what could have happened.
Should have been longer, but still one of the best short stories we are given.
Well this was creepy. New to us vampire Jeremy has been held hostage for a creepy traveling carnival for hard telling how many years. And he reminds me a lot of Godfrey from the Sookie Stackhouse books, the one who goes to meet the sun when Sookie is taken hostage by those zealots, Dead in Dallas maybe? Anyway this is only like our third time out of Morganville, and it isn’t far, but it’s definitely creepy. Just Eve and Mikey, kicking ass and taking names for Amelie. Except yanno, till they release evil vamp Jeremy and don’t take him back like they’re supposed to.
A short story told in Eve's POV. It's about the duo / Mr & Mrs Glass who was being sent off for a mission by the town's founder to rescue a fourteen years old vampire named Jeremy. Captured by humans, Jeremy was locked in a silver cage for a show inside a carnival. He was a bit creepy though, but at this moment I never heard of him being mentioned in the main book yet, I couldn't comment much about him. But he sounded interesting, and I couldn't wait to find out more about him. However, there's a thing that I could comment, and it was about Michael. Up until this point, I never knew that Michael has the 'forget-about-me abilities', I never heard him practised it or even used it in the main book 1-12. Anyway, I probably would read about it in the next few books, hopefully!
I actually read this in 2012, but as it's a short story I read online and not full length book, I don't want it counting towards my Goodreads Reading Challenge.
Over a short span of time at a carnival, Eve and Michael find Jeremy, a caged vampire youth meant to be an attraction and gather spectators. They also encounter Jeremy’s jailers and incapacitate them to free Jeremy. Unfortunately, Jeremy has other plans than to escape the carnival.
This short novella can be read as a standalone within this series, as nothing major occurs and there are few characters to keep track of.
"Dark Rides" is a Morganville Vampire short story told from Eve's perspective. A traveling carnival has been using a real vampire to suck the life out of customers and pretending it is a hoax. Amelie is not happy about this and has sent Michael Glass to capture or kill the vamp responsible. On this mission, Michael takes his new wife, Eve with him.
As they wander through the amusement rides, Michael breaks open a locked door that contains a teenage vamp known as Jeremy. He is in a silver cage and looks dirty, malnourished and wild. He is definitely interested in having Eve as his 'Happy Meal,' but she is not going to let that happen. What follows is an interesting tale that will introduce a character that I am sure will show up in future editions of this series. Dark Rides is a fast read and is free on Rachel Caine's new website. Check it out!
Once again, my problem with the novellas in this series is that I want MORE! But they are still so good. The author does a very good job of getting the information told in a quick manner but that doesn't feel rushed. This short is about Eve and Michael and an errand they run for Amelie...it takes them OUT of Morganville, which is always interesting because we don't see it often. It also introduces a new vampire and if the "hinting" in this story is correct, we may be seeing some more of him. It also shows us once again how cute of a couple Eve and Michael are.
I think Jeremy was a bit on the creepy side, but can totally understand his reasons for revenge on this strange carnival. It was nice seeing Michael and Eve having a time alone with adventures, even if on the dangerous side, with vampires of course.
It's different for me reading about Morganville and not seeing Claire, because these two are totally together in my mind, but this little novella was a nice time.
Tha short story is holding great promises for the next book that's for sure! Loved Eve POV, she's always makes me laugh and she see the world from her very particular way. And scoot over Amelie & Oliver! I'm pretty sure we just be introduced to a brand new villan and this one seems bad to the core!
A short story told in Eve's POV. It's about the duo / Mr & Mrs Glass who was being sent off for a mission by the town's founder to rescue a fourteen years old vampire named Jeremy. Quite a nice quirky story. X
Short side story about Eve and Michael on a little side mission for Amelia. Fun little read with a bit of the scary as the vampires tend to bring to most of the Morganville stories.
