Meh.

Straight forward dark, organized crime story where Ty's hens have come home to roost. Unfortunately, Mason is the collateral damage. The odd word choice/sentence structure, over-the-top descriptions, too stupid to be professionals, and Mary Sue Mason left me less than enamored. Add on the cliffhanger ending and I'm out.

5* - 1* (due being a cliffhanger) = 4*

I dislike cliffhangers, with a more satisfying ending this would have been a full 5*.

~~~~ Spoilers ahead! ~~~~
This is a book about the dark side of sadomasochism. I'm not talking about what you commonly get there: a tale of atrocities heaped upon each other, usually emotionless as hell, some competition in who can recount the most horrific torture of 'em all. No. This book is about the hapless person having a paraphilia, the sadist who can't change his ways and SUFFERS because of it as much as his victim.
I get Jason all the way and back, I am absolutely sorry for him, and Khan did a magnificent job in bringing us up close to a sexual sadist who can't channel his needs into BDSM***, because that will simply not be enough to satisfy him. And by God he suffers, he falls in love with his victim, and instantly gets divided between his sexual self (Ty) and the rest of himself (Jason). He wants to rescue his beloved and at the same time he still wants to hurt him.
The story itself is truly horrific, unlike for example such similar themed stories as Waiting in the Throes which is in comparison as unreal as a comic strip or manga with its emotionless depiction of further-wider-higher of torture and its cardboard characters. Angel on the other hand delves deeply into the realistic emotions of real people, not shying away from showing us all the shades there are instead of just black and white. The two deaths, described in spare, elegant and cutting prose, are a hundred times more gruesome and making this story so much grittier in their matter-of-factness, than anything else I recently read attempting to do a realistic take.
***HERE in THIS story you get to see the difference between BDSM and sadomasochism! This difference is why I so often breathe fire and see red over people touting the acronym of BDSM when of rights they should stick to "sadomasochism" instead!
The author did great. She managed to rip my heart out stomp on it, put it back in and then took it out again to stabbed it couple of times just to make sure before stuffing it back again. It is still in awful pain while I am typing this. Sometimes, I do wonder why I bother reading stuff that hurts me so much. Am I a closet masochist?
So, the story was good, it's gripping so it's good! I like the plot, the trepidations and tension as I read. I think you could tell from my all my status updates. LOL. Ok, back on to the review. The author took a brave approach especially towards the end and it hurts like hell to read on. Can you believe my fingers are shaking till now? Yes, ouch! my poor poor abused heart.
Like most of my reviews, I don't really talk about what happened in the story but more on what it makes me feel. Since there's already a blurb there doing its job on that part better than me of course. So, I'd leave that alone.
There are parts in the book that strongly suggest Stockholm Syndrome whereby the very abused and tormented Angel started to long for his abuser's presence as a comfort. Lapping up every small kind gestures from Jason like a good little puppy and wanting more without really realizing how much he craves it.
I think Jason on the other hand is even more dangerous than Ty. At least one could expect what Ty would do next and prepares for it. Jason makes you doubt your doubts and yourself. Do I hate him now after all the hurts and damages he had caused on an innocent soul? I am not sure. I just hope that he or the other Jasons out there would just explore their kinks in a safer manner. He could well try to pursue a consented BDSM arrangements. Or a mutual-consent master-slave settings instead of supporting slaves gangs out there where demand equals supply. On second thought, I just might hate him because of this fact alone.
To me, the story has ended. No cliffy. It ended like how it should be... leaving the readers room to ponder on the gruesomeness of this persistent and unbiased plague known as human trafficking/slavery.
4 Stars
This story had so much potential to be a 5 star read for me but I feel a bit disappointed here.
I Love Aaron/Angel, his brother Damien, Matt and even the Villain – Ty/Jason. (All my friends know that I have this sick and wicked taste for bad guys)
It does have a great story line and characters.
What is holding my 5th star is the fact that it all happened too fast.
The book covers Angel’s life from the moment he was kidnapped at 17 and kept confined in a Private Club as a sex slave until he is 24 and out of it.
In the Club, Aaron met Ty/Jason a sadist tormented by his own demons who named Aaron as Angel and become obsessed with him.
Angel hated Ty and fantasized about killing him in his sleep and dreamed of the day he would be out of this nightmare.
“For two years Ty had tortured him in every possible way”
Then, one day, the sadistic is hit by conscience and Angel hit by cupid.
As I said it happened too fast. I want to know more about them together as a couple. I wanted to feel the relationship flourish between them. I needed more than “whatever Syndrome “Angel was suffering from.
I .DON’T .GET .IT
How the hell this syndrome works? I lost count how many times I stopped while reading to try to understand it. And so I Google it!
“Stockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with them. These feelings are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims, who essentially mistake a lack of abuse from their captors for an act of kindness.”
I may post more later, but off the top...
Kids (15-18yrs old?) are being kidnapped, tortured, raped, dehumanized, sold within a sadistic "BDSM" society to their members. (The slaves are kept on site and it seems leased as opposed to actually being personally owned after purchase)
This is Aaron/Angel's story. It's not particularly graphic, but it is underage slave-fic. Aaron's owner, Ty/Jason, has a sudden change of heart and decides he's not only capable of love, but has fallen in love with the boy he has been horrifically torturing for 2 years. Now the club is "bad, scary, dangerous and all kinds of wrong".
Then we are lead through him convincing Aaron/Angel of this.
I'll stop here because I really am still sorting out whether I feel obligated to have an opinion/care, or if I actually was invested in the story and just didn't like it.
It's interesting.
This novel has a theme that, for some unknown reason, appeals to me, and when I saw the opportunity for a free copy, I was lucky enough to receive it - thanks Cyma!
I actually have mixed feelings about this novel; the basic storyline or the bones of the book, is very good, but the execution of it was a bit hit and miss for me. There were two areas that I felt didn't always ring true. First is the dialogue; for the most part, it was believable, but there were times where I felt Angel's response was either not angry enough (given the situation) or at other times, was overly accepting - both responses just didn't fit the scene to me. The other area where I felt it slipped a little, was the rapid change in both characters' attitude - a bit too fast and easy for me, particularly Angel. Unfortunately, the 'hotel' scene(s) is where most of these problems are for me.
As I said, the essential bones of this story has a lot going for it, but I think the dialogue, in particular, needs a bit of tweaking before I can rate it higher. I also think by adding a bit more background would be of benefit to the story - Angel's family, particularly his brother Damian's role, could be explored earlier or in greater depth than it was, as it would help explain their reactions; more info about what happened in the years prior to Ty, which would explain more about Angel's living conditions and his response to Ty; and finally, a bit more info on Angel's days at the 'hotel' when Ty wasn't around would also be good.
One other thing, I did notice the author always wrote "him-self" rather than "himself". I don't know why this is the case, but admit it was one of those things that grated on me while reading...
Angel is a disturbing read about a boy who was kidnapped and used as a sex slave in a private club. He's been there for years. Ty is one of the rich, screwed up men who nearly lives at the private club because he can't get his rocks off without feeling like he can completely do anything he wants to someone, especially violence. He begins to have a conscience and wants to get Angel out of this situation.
Not giving this five stars because I was not totally wrapped up with these MCs and the ending left me hanging.
This is not a sweet romance, this is a dark, erotic read with rape, slavery and physical abuse. Don't pick this book up without fair warning that you are entering into a world of dark erotica.
ALERT: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHOY~! ALSO MAN-COOTIES.
I won't lie - I originally read this thinking it was going to be a straightforward BDSM dude on dude rapefiesta.
Instead what I got were freakin' twists and turns, psychological mindgames and a twisted situation that, in my opinion, became worse.
Suffice it to say, Ty just isn't my cup of tea. The bastard should've been dropped like a bad habit, but one never knows what is in one's heart until it comes out and sits in the living room like a white elephant demanding treats.
So, let's just set the elephant aside for now and state this: Angel is well-written, and certainly nicely paced! I came to empathize with Angel's plight, the situation he was in and the choices he, later, had to make. As a reader, character narrative and thought processes are important about whether or not I'm gonna like 'em, and Angel is a pretty interestin' guy for a captured slave.
Admittedly though, I was rooting for him to make the OTHER choice than what he ultimately did~! Still, a good read altogether, highly suggestible if yer into this kinda stuff. :D
5 star, A+++, fast shipping, would buy from vendor again. <3
A COMPLETE REWRITE FROM THE ORIGINAL
This should've been published under a new name, because it bears no resemblance to the original version referenced in the good reviews on here.
This is a complete piece of crap IMHO. There's no sex - all 'fade to black' BS!! The characters are two-dimensional at best (I couldn't give two shites about any of them). There is no capture-bonding in this at all.
Ends on a cliffhanger, but who cares? Maybe book 2 has the juicy bits in it still, but I won't be taking the bait.
It's like wanting a four-course meal and getting a limp, mushy, single piece of lettuce instead.
DNF. The story flow was very disjointed and confusing, character motivation was often obscure, and I couldn't figure out the point of this book except for the gratuitous torture porn angst.
REVIEWING SECOND EDITION : 3.5 STARS
Angel #1 is the start of a dark erotica, captive/rape/torture style fiction series, that if you're willing to go places outside of your comfort zone looks like it's going to be a pretty compelling read.
The story opens with former rich kid Mason Bryant receiving a phone call about the death of his estranged father, a cold hearted man who rejected him for being gay and in a relationship with an older man, his partner Ty, whose lifestyle is worlds apart from the Ivy League existence Mason has grown up in.
In a funk he goes into a bar to drown his sorrows. Realising later he's drunk too much to drive himself home, he goes back to his car to get his phone but is attacked by a guy with a gun, who threatens to kill him. He's convinced he's going to die as the gunman is obviously high and out of control of his senses, but at the last minute he backs off, steals the car with Masons phone still inside it leaving Mason stranded, shaken to the core but alive.
What results from that one insensitive, act of violence has far reaching, consequences for everyone involved...especially Mason, who ends up paying a terrible price for Ty's act of revenge on the man responsible for his lovers frightening ordeal.
There's no getting past the fact that this is not going to be for the faint hearted. It deals with a dark, depraved subject matter and contains triggers that might distress some readers. Apart from Mason, there are no nice guys here. Ty might be the 'hero' of the story, if you want to assign somebody the title, but in a way he's just as homicidal as the bad guys. Morally, his one saving grace is that he's trying to go straight for Mason, who hates his contract killer past and the criminal world he's still mixed up in but anti hero or not, there’s definitely something about Ty that draws you in.
Ms Khan’s writing style is good and the start of the book grabbed my attention straight away; once I started reading I didn't want to put it down. As I got further in and learned more about Ty's personality and his 'career', which itself has strong criminal elements; what he did to protect and avenge the man he loves came as no surprise. His world, and most of the people in it, revolves around violence so it was no surprise that his reaction was 'act first, think later' and it's this that backfires big time when he realises that he's fucked with the wrong people! We're talking Russian mob people…and we all know what that means! **Shivers**
Overall I liked what Cyma brought to the table, but unfortunately there were some things that didn't quite work for me. Surprisingly, there are no graphic love scenes between Ty and Mason, so even though it's patently obvious they're in love; not witnessing their physical passion and intimacy affected my own emotional connection to the relationship, which in turn skewed my view on certain aspects of them as a couple. When the fallout happened I never really felt the full intensity of Ty's desolation and pain at having his lover snatched, under such horrific circumstances, that I felt I should have…a by-product, I think, of not feeling the intimacy between them as strongly as I would have liked....
"Angel" was something that I didn't think I will see outside my own imagination. And I mean it in a good way. I had a chance to read part of it, while it was still unfinished a few weeks back; and I remember that I was amazed.
I had to sit with the book for a while, to be honest, I wanted to say about it a bit more than "This is amazing and you should read it!" . But in the end this is all you really need to know. Everyone will see and feel this differently, but I was happy to meet this author and to read this piece! You need to feel the pain and get under Angel's skin, to see what he sees and to feel what he does.
I cannot say more without spoiling it and I really don't want to plant thoughts about the book before your read it yourself. Pick up your copy and sink into this amazing dominant adventure.
I really think that this is a tale of love in a really beautiful way. A Must read.
This book is a spicy tale of the darker side of human nature. It is extremely well written and takes you on an adrenaline filled roller coaster ride through every emotion possible. Cyma does a fantastic job creating multilayered characters. They have so much depth and passion you cannot help but feel like they are your friends. This book was impossible to put down and when I was forced to do so I could not get the story out of my mind. Much like Jason has a hold on Aaron, Angel had a hold on me. This is a full throttle story filled with passion, anger, self-discovery and fear. It is an amazing tale and one that will stay on my shelves forever! I highly suggest this book to all people 17 and up. It gets a little graphic but it wouldn’t be the amazing story it is if you didn’t know the whole story.
This is something I could read over again and again just for the simple fact that once I find a book I love I tend to trip over the words because I grow anxious and excited as I want to know what is next. I have never read a book of this amazing caliber but I enjoyed every bit of it. The connection between Angel and Ty is magnetic. Despite their rough start their feelings for one another is truly genuine and foreign to them and each other. Never knowing what love feels like often feels like that the first time for everyone I suppose. I don't want to give away too many spoilers but this is a def must read and I hope there comes a sequel to it. I want to know how their lives pan out for each other and with each other! Go on and take that 5 star rating and multiply it by 100 because this book is on point!
I need to know.....
So when are we going to get book two in this series? This series has lots of potential. The characters and the details the author has written are very well done. My only complaint would be the flow of the book. I felt it went from a slow steady pace to five weeks passing within a few short chapters. However, I cannot wait to see where the story leads.
With a good editor, this book could be fleshed out and made into something great yet as it is now, it is incomplete and was a waste of my time. The most frustrating part about this, "book" is that it actually has potential!
ANGEL does contain a beginning and a partial middle yet there is certainly no ending. The main characters were interesting yet we don't get much information on either of them. There are hints about their sexual relationship yet every scene is fade to black with no explicit information (yet another disappointment). I was intrigued by the unexpected crime that takes place early on in the story and became even more hopeful when the story took a turn down a darker path where there were dungeons, rape etc.. Unfortunately, I was again disappointed as all of the dark scenes were fade to black as well.
Just as a new character was introduced, sparking my hope for a twist in the storyline, the story suddenly, abruptly ended. The ending comes without any reason and in an absurdly inappropriate location. Because of this, I will not be reading the sequel for fear that is this will happen again.
The first paragraph was delicious, dark, lyrical prose:
“When the rotting skeleton of New York City rising all around him was nothing more than a fancy cage, a burial ground with its deception of glamorous poisons and bootlegged desires, where guilty patrons of overindulgence smiled from ear to ear like necrotic dolls covered in the filth of abomination and self-loathing. It’s abjectness that defied any purpose or morality. The only things that got ruined in its wake were people like him, people who in the grand scheme of things didn’t matter, people without college degrees and who committed the crime of carving their own paths instead of shielding themselves in conformity.”
Excerpt From: Khan, Cyma Rizwaan. “Angel.” iBooks.
But then whoever wrote those lines must have hired a ghost writer for the rest of the book, because all that beautiful description disappeared. To the point where I have very little idea of what the MCs even look like or how they came together or the reasons they stayed together. This first book is very short - way too short. Several versions exist out there and this version apparently went through the shredder. And fade-to-black sex scenes throughout? WTF??? Why???
Editing is an issue and the blurb needs some work because Mikhail didn't show up until the last page of the book. But I am interested in where the storyline goes from here and will read the next installment if/when it is released.
Wow! I loved this and hated it, loved the MCs and hated them. I really felt with this story, it dragged me along and shoved me in there and made inroads to my heart. This is brutal, sweet, heart warming and wrenching and the ending is well you will have to see for yourself. Outside comfort zones but what a read.
This story is outside my usual reading genre, definitely not my cup of cocoa. Stockholm Syndrome with a twist of BDSM.
Ms. Rizwaan Khan writes in a way that makes a dark story line interesting. Her analogies are unique, she uses the main character’s indecisiveness as a heart-wrenching back and forth drama, and she knows how to wrap up each chapter.
I give it four stars for those reasons.
Synopsis:
It doesn’t matter what his name used to be. Now he is just “Angel”.
Destined to spend his life in captivity, 22-year old Angel secretly dreams of murdering his tormentors, especially Ty – the arrogant stranger who holds his reins – literally.
Ty, who has consistently pushed his conscience so far back he thought it would never resurface. Enter Angel – subdued, unhappy and downright stubborn – and Ty begins to unravel in the strangest fashion.Why does he feel for Angel something he never thought he would feel?
If you play a role for too long does it ever become you or is there is a chance your old soul will come back and claim the body?
Angel is a story about finding love in the darkest possible places. It is a journey into the hearts of people who find themselves captivated by the charms of love and seduction. It will make you sad, it will make you laugh, and sometimes it may even make you cry – a lot like true love.
A story that will stay with you for a very long time...
My Thoughts:
So this was about what I was expecting, though it kept me confused quite a bit.
It was extremely difficult to follow the passage of time. I knew time was passing, but it was impossible to tell just how much time had been passing. One moment, Angel was hating Ty and the next thing, they were in love and all happy and I just didn't get where that came from.
There were some moments where Angel responded to Ty before they settled into their little domestication thing, but then suddenly, there were a couple. A fucked up couple, but a couple. I was happy for them that they found a ray of sunshine in all of that mess, but was Ty really working on getting them out of it?
Then he goes and fucks everything up, leaves poor Angel unprotected and Bad Shit happens. And then it just ends. I assume there will be a sequel. I don't know if Ty can be redeemed for me, though, so I don't know that I will read it.
"Angel"- Warning! Not for everyone.
"Angel" is a LGBT adult fiction about a young man who is sold into a secret sex club as a young boy. Now 22 years of age, and held against his will, he is required to sexually serve his master, Ty. "Angel" tracks this young man's wild relationship with Ty in and out of the sex club.
"Angel" is raw and crude. This is not the average, sweet romance novel if you're looking for one. And quite rightly so. This is a tale of sexual exploitation and abuse. Khan successfully gives the reader's light of the insights of a sex slave and his struggling emotions towards his captor. Personally, I enjoyed it because it hit so many emotive levels. It caused me to have sympathy for the character, angry for his abuse, uncomfortable, teary and most of all it is challenging! "Angel" is well-written with an impressive narrative style that will have you breezing through it in no time. It was like "Fifty Shades of Grey"- the LGBT version. And from what I read of fifty shades, this is far better written and a much better premise for sexual slavery.
I was chosen as one of the beta readers for this story.  I am not normally a dark story person but I really enjoyed this story.  This is about Angel and Ty and an unlikely romantic story set in a background of kidnapping, slavery, and torture.  The redemption and forgiveness of this story makes it a wonderful love story that you shouldn't miss.
Eh. Meh.
It's not that great. I mean, what I've read (that pathetic little sample) isn't terrible, but it's not exactly that good. And there are so many errors...
I can't tell if it's weak sauce or just pedestrian.
my rating is based on a book that says it was published in 2015. This is part 1. I'm assuming some form of this story was published in 2012 as some of the ratings seem to be for this book. this should be fixed as it is confusing.
