A book on Dali, with all of its components supervised by the artist himself. Its dust jacket was designed by Dali to resemble a candy box. The illustrations are juxtaposed with Dali's own thoughts and subjects that most deeply concerned him - war, his wife Gala, space/time, eroticism and mysticism.
The combination of books linked to this page is such a mess (this is also true of Amazon’s page). There are books combined here that AREN'T different editions of the same book; they’re different books entirely. This review is for the large, coffee table book that was published by Abrams in 1968 (presumed first edition), edited by Max Gérard, translated by Eleanor R. Morse, and manufactured in France. It has the gold foil dust jacket and the painted, cloth-covered boards. This book is roughly 12” square and about 1.5” thick. It’s similar to Dali Wines of Gala. Wines of Gala is actually smaller.
Dalí’s work is divided by theme in this book. Chapters include “War,” “Landscape,” “Gala,” “Nature Morte (Still Life),” “Eroticism,” “Mysticism,” “Space-Time,” “Oneiros,” and “Toward an Imperial Classicism.” There is also a chronological index and a biography. Whole works and details are depicted in color and black and white. These images are interspersed with Dalí’s writings. Anyone who appreciates Dalí’s work will enjoy this book.
I really enjoyed this book. I bought it because of the artwork and it did not let me down. I saw art by Dali that I hadn’t seen before. The writing in the book doesn’t match the art but that is okay. I did learn some new facts about Dali but not much.
