An excellent resource of the movie, but not perfect. You get extensive information on the history of what happened to Earth and the colonies that came after, as well as the war with the Skrel. You also get some great details on the Ranger's and their history. I enjoyed the large entries on Ranger equipment like the Lifesuit and Cutlass. This is the kind of book that you should read BEFORE you see the movie, as it will fill in a lot of blanks and give you a much stronger understanding of what's going on.

I did say the book wasn't perfect. I say this because for a book like this to be perfect, it would need to cover every aspect of its content. And the United Ranger Corps Survival Manual is lacking on a few details. The ships in the movie, for one, are just a footnote compared to all of the other information provided. Considering how significant at least one of the ships were in the movie, I would have liked to have seen the same technical detail level on them as you get with many other items in the book. Technologies are Smart Fabric are also a bit understated compared to their apparent significance. I still strongly recommend this book, but just know it could have been better.
Oh well.. I suppose you can't have everything.

"After Earth: United Ranger Corps Survival Guide" is a wonderful look into the world of "After Earth". As someone who likes science fiction and fantasy films, I love books like this because it allows me to go deeper into the story, with more backstory on the characters and the settings.

Rather than take the normal approach for art books, this one is unique because it is designed to be an artifact from the world of the film. It reads like a manual that would be given to cadets in the Ranger Corp. As such, the book is written to address the reader as though he/she was a citizen of Nova Prime. It's a fascinating approach, and one that definitely yields unique results.

The manual goes in-depth on a variety of aspects of the movie: background on the Ursa and other creatures; the dangerous environments of Earth; and more about Ghosting. Also detailed is the process of training cadets. The single best section of the book relates to the many tools available to the Rangers - this includes the life suit, wing suit, and weapons (and you can see the quality work that went into designing these tools).

Of course, the downside is that there is nothing about the actual making of the movie. No director, actors, or production references of any kind. So if you typically read books like this with the hopes of learning more about the filmmaking process, this guide would be one to skip.

In short, this is a quality book that will allow those who enjoyed "After Earth" to explore the world beyond what is on screen.
