Gustav Hermance is finally putting his life back together. He’s landed a job as a foreman for a construction company, he hasn’t suffered a panic attack in months, and he’s found an apartment of his own. Gus’s hard-earned independence has helped him put the experiments the scientists conducted on him behind him. It brings quiet nights, poker evenings with buddies, and learning to be comfortable with his mated friend’s displays of affection. Everything is going well, until he scents something so wonderful, he becomes obsessed with it. Gus thinks he’s found his mate, but the guy’s scent fades too quickly for him to locate the source. With the help of his buddies, he starts a search of Stone Ridge that quickly expands to include the forests around them. What he finds is Tible, a creature he never knew existed. Can he convince the sexy male that their differences don’t have to tear them apart?
Well, I'm totally reading these out of order but after reading Trill To Me Sweetly, I wanted to find out Gus's and Tible's story. This was a sweet mate story. Tible was innocent of gargoyle ways. Gus was a good mate to him. I wonder if we get to see the egg hatch in later stories. Now I'm interested in Declan and Lark's story. On to the next. Like I said, totally out of order.
3.75* Um..ok, I'll start with the easy stuff first. Gus is a white rhino shifter ( gotta love these cool and unusual shifters) and he keeps scenting his mate but can't seem to find him. With the help of a few fellow shifters and a vampire he finds his mate Tible, and he's a gargoyle. Well, as to be expected they fall into heavy/hot and steamy lust then love, all is well in mating-land, but then for some reason Gus has an ache that just won't heal. Ooops.....
I read this knowing I was in for some funny and mindless entertainment, and that was what I got. A rhino shifter and a gargoyle? Nice, especially if the rhino is 6'6 and the gargoyle 5'10 or so. Add to that a veritable menagerie of shifters (elephant, tiger, wolves (with a fake Irish accent), gazelle, raven, lizard, bunny (!), coyote...did I miss something?) and paranormal beings (a vampire who`s mated to the bunny...), fated mates, jumping bones instead of shaking hands and LOTS of sex including guys growling mine all the way, and here you go. So far so good. It was what I'd expected, and it was actually sweet though a bit flat--I didn't even mind the mpreg much although I normally don't read that kinda thing.
But I could've lived happily for the rest of my life without reading a detailed report about the result of mpreg being expelled from the body in question. Anatomy aside, that was just gross.
They keep saying he's moving away like he's leaving the pack. But he's just moving off site.
Awesome that the man was described as Caucasian. That never happens. People are only described by race if they're not white. But the other person in the room isn't human and has gray skin I think and still it came up. So cool. I want to know what the gargoyle looks like when he's animate as opposed to stone.
Big guy bottoming. Awesome.
So far this is the most boring shifter book I've ever read. No plot at all.
While I love the idea of a different kind of paranormal creature, and I've only read about one other gargoyle, it wasn't done well, not a lot of info about looks, mannerisms, etc. We already have a basic knowledge of this stuff for other supernatural things but not really much for a gargoyle. The whole book is really just figuring out what mating does to a couple where one is a gargoyle. Plus lots of sex. No plot.
Just because he doesn't need the bed, doesn't mean he shouldn't use it. No one else will unless it's his mate who just wants to be close to him and take a nap, and if he's on the floor, he's in the way.
Fucking mpreg. At least they're exposing how it works.
Well, I'm dazed and confused after finishing this. It was fun until they finally got a hold of the gargoyle but then plot and characters somehow went downhill fast. Other things, too, but that's for yourself to find out.
I loved the gargoyle thing and I'd love to read more books including weird things and creatures. Even if the rest of that story might be as blah as this one. Yep. I'm an idiot and a sap.
Anyway, if I could call this a guilty pleasure I would feel slightly better but it's not. It's a whole lot of guilt and not much pleasure, actually.
3.5 Let's admit it - I read it to get to the part about the egg. Mpreg is a fave, and an egg? But wow, have the next book on hand because I want to see the gargoyle rip up Bobby's abuser.
Though this one had very little in the way of danger in it, I found that I really enjoyed the story. I had to laugh at the quirky little surprise the mated pair got to experience.
Gus is a rhino shifter who is at the tail end of his recovery from the brutal torture and testing he underwent when he was captured by that secret scientific group. He has a nice job working construction and is now able to move out of Declan's home to his own apartment in Stoney Ridge. Not long afterwards, Gus' extra sense of smell picks up an elusive scent at his work sight that indicates that each night someone is moving about the old church his is renovating. His new friends from the Stoney Ridge pack decide to help him track down the culprit. And isn't Gus surprised to discover that his nightly visitor is his mate and that's only one of the surprises. Caspian, a character from an earlier book is able to tell him that his mate is a gargoyle.
I found the addition of Tible the gargoyle and the strong character interaction between Tible and Gus along with the return of several favorites from the series make the plot a much stronger one. The gargoyle stuff was interesting though I would have enjoyed learning how Tible's egg came to be lost there in the wilderness for his adoptive parents to find. I look forward to learning more especially since the other gargoyle in the story scented his mate who is part of the Stoney Ridge characters. The romance between Gus and Tible was really good. That twist to their situation once they are mated had me chuckling at how quirky it was.
This was a strong and satisfying addition to the series and I look forward to the next installment.
I really liked Gus and Tible! They both needed love and acceptance and found it in eachother. The twist at the ending wasn't exactly my cup of tea but I can respect it for not being overdone and new for the series if memory serves. Also cool for bringing in the Gargoyles! !:-)
I really enjoyed the fact that this story was all about the MC's and not the crazy scientists or any serious dangers. The new characters were funny. I can't wait to read their stories.
reread - While each of these stories is an interesting short story or novella, each in their own little series, they become much more if they are read in the suggested reading order by Charlie Richards as a whole. https://charlie-richards.com/reading-... While they are still not a 5/5, at least they become a bit more than okay and are much more interesting as characters mesh across and around individual series. Individually they are a 3/5 so that is where I mark them.
Le voy a dar 5 estrellitas, no porque sea extraordinariamente bueno, sino porque es el primer libro que leo sobre gárgolas y en este mundo sobrenatural lo veo muy original, algo diferente a los shifters, vampiros y demonios.
Went back to read this book that first introduces the gargoyles and was not disappointed!
Gus is a rhino shifter who was rescued from a research facility. He is now staying with the wolf pack that rescued him, since his former herd had issues with him being gay. Finally feeling more settled since his rescue, Gus scents his mate at this work site but only in passing. Curious, the pack helps him go at night to see what is happening. To everyone's surprise they find a gargoyle. Tible was raised by shifters who found his egg. His parents were mixed each a different type of shifter so their mating was frowned upon and they lived hidden in the mountains. They raised Tible until he headed out on his own to find other gargoyles to learn more about himself and hopefully find his mate. Finding out his mate is a rhino shifter makes a learning curve for both men.
I enjoyed how these two were together. They wanted to be in a relationship where they were equals and there was caring and love, which they followed through on. As they discovered new things together theyb supported each other and made sure that they were each others rock. It was sweet and kind and I enjoyed reading it! I think some things about pregnancy change in later stories, but everything else remains the same.
This is a sweet well-written book about some unlikely shifters getting together and a whole bunch of clutching your stomach humor along the way. There is no angst to the plot but nor is there any villains.I love Gustav, he’s a gentle giant all the way around. He might have been a victim of abuse but he is shown as realistically handling things and not as a victim but as a survivor. He’s quirks in the book are relatable but emphasized to give added humor, which easily kept a smile on my face throughout the telling. I love the whole adopted primacy of Tible. It added extra oomph and humor to the story. I wish it had been expanded just a bit more to help round out some of the questions I had as far as how they knew so much about gargoyles and yet didn’t know some important gargoyle information that arises in the book.
I love this book for several reasons. First, this is when we are introduced to Gargoyles and it is the start of the spin off “A Paranormal’s Love” series (https://www.goodreads.com/series/96695). It also has Tible who is a gargoyle without a clutch and he goes through all the new mating stuff on his own!
Second, without spoiling too much, we also have our first mpreg of the series (I think it’s the first.) and it was awesome!
Third, there are a some fun dynamics between the giant and the smaller guy that I just adore.
We don’t move the story arc a lot with this one – except to introduce the spin off series – but we do get to see our guys including Lyle and Gordon and Grady.
Gus is so sweet and Tible is adorable and together they are a really sweet couple who have a lot of hot smexy times!
Heh. Okay, I have no real complaints. It was a nice story, if not too gripping for reasons that might have to do more with my condition than the actual book. Who knows.
And I am interested in our big gargoyle alpha who no doubt will have his own book extremely soon. Might even be the next one.
I rate books comparatively by purpose and size. With these, it's all about brain candy to pass time: No real depth. Instant love, Easy resolutions, and NOT the best editing. But... Sometimes a little fluff is good, especially if you've just read a gut wrenching book that tears your heart out or you are struggling to focus etc...
I don't buy a lot of fluff anymore, but I love gargoyles. This story had potential and it served is purpose. It was average for this type of book. Nothing stood out at as horribly bad or good. I was thrown out of the story a couple of times especially with unclear shifts in time. I found it very irritating that we learn of someone that is pivotal to our couple, but we never get to really see or meet him.
I had to give this three stars because I hate books were men get pregnant. If I wanted that I'd read a m/f romance. It sucks too, because I love this series...actually I love pretty much all of Ms. Richard's books and hate giving bad reviews. One thing I really liked was the introduction of a gargoyle. You don't really see them used as a romantic lead character or at least I don't see that very often. Still, looking forward to more books in this series.

It was a nice, quiet, easy read but that's about it. I found the characters transparent in the sense that other than their basic looks, you don't really get a sense of who they are. That goes for the entire sphere surrounding them. You get a vague sense of it being there, but you don't really see it. I will say Gus has a little more character than Tible, but I found I could picture Maelgwn's personality much more clearly than the MC's. I'm looking forward to his story.
Pretty weird and even slightly ridiculous. That pregnancy came out of nowhere and there wasn't really a reason for it 'cause they could and should have asked about that and other stuff and they didn't. They had an alpha gargoyle at their disposal and never bothered to ask anything relevant. Pretty reckless and idiotic. Then again, having sex was their priority the whole book. I don't think they even bothered to bond with each other very well...and the end was pretty anti-climatic too.
