Confounded and baffled on so many levels, it’s hard to state rather emphatically how I truly feel about this read. On the one hand, I rather liked Claire Ryan, Bridget (no last name), and Evan Lane to the point that I considered them good acquaintances by the end of this tale. In some ways, Claire reminded me of…well me. If I were female, that is. Shy, but definitely not quiet, her stronger, talkative self was just bursting at the seam of her jeans. She tentatively explored the BDSM world through a series of engorging reads, becoming more aroused with each tale, and her high pain tolerance helped her out immensely in this new universe. Bridget with her bubbly personality and stunning good looks reminded of a cheerleader who hasn’t exceeded her expiration date. Evan, on the other hand, confounded me a bit with his overemphasis on past guilt and unwillingness to embrace the present. While his actions and motivations become clear, it’s hard not to be a bit frustrated with his constant clinginess to previous wrongs.

Steamy scenes and passionate embraces filled the pages, but not to the point that it ever exceeded my threshold. The peek behind the bedroom curtain left me hot and heavy and bothered and squirming in my chair, while the downtime allowed me to catch my breath, reevaluate the purpose of my life, and study long division. Elene Sallinger knows how to turn up the heat and strike your pleasure points with a fine leather flogger.

But…the first half of AWAKENING reminded me of a high school crush not yet realized, and the buildup proved an exercise in self-control to continue to flip the pages. Sure, there’s character development and story, but there’s a whole lot of dancing around in Claire’s and Evan’s heads. Had more external conflict been presented here, instead of massive amounts of the internal variety, this would have been easier to sludge through. Instead, I probably needed a larger pair of boots. But possibly even worse than that was the moment the mental tango turned into a physical one for our dynamic duo. But once I shook my head and wormed my way back into the story, all was right with the world. The suspect beginnings, though, left my world with a tainted haze that never completely went away.

I received this book for free through NetGalley.

2.5 meh ⭐️'s

From the reviews I read I was expecting a lot more from this book and it seriously disappointed. I can't say that I didn't enjoy it, since the plot and characters were really engaging and interesting, especially the heroine. I was super fascinated by Claire the h and her whole backstory with her ex and parents. The framework for this story was done really well. It was a unique take on the BDSM trope and I loved how both characters were everyday normal but interesting people, well, the heroine was interesting, the hero not so much.

My biggest issues were with the meat and bones, or, more like the lack of meat and bones in other words this book was too short. There were heavy internal issues that were plaguing both characters that needed more cushioning to be resolved and result in proper character development especially, in the Hero Evan's case.

Evan is a widowed ex-military? war veteran? I don't even know cause it was mentioned like twice and sooo unexplored and a DOMINANT. I swear to god some authors act like being a DOMINANT the all capital letters is necessary or a SUBMISSIVE is like being a different species or breed of human, and unless I am missing something, then IMO they are being overly dramatic and cringey. Thankfully, Sallinger didn't do this too much. Anyway, Evan owns a bookshop where he meets Claire when she comes for her book club meeting and is attracted to her. This is very significant because she is the first woman he has been attracted to since his wife's death. And what does our man Evan do? The first 40% of this book he avoids her like the plague or is super rude to her. The next 50% after he takes her under his wing in order to initiate her into the BDSM world, he constantly tries to fight his feelings for her cause he just can't bare the thought of betraying his very DEAD wife like that.
description

I wouldn't have minded this too much because unlike most people I like the deadex trope and the angsty goodness it brings. In this case however, Evan came to the realization that he was in love with Claire when there was barely 5% of the book left?? To say his love for Claire was unconvincing would be an understatement. Also keep in mind that Evan was basically pining and feeling guilty towards his dead wife 95% of the book.
In all honesty even Claire falling in love with Evan doesn't make a whole lot of sense since they don't really interact much until 60% of the book. It all just felt too hasty, I wonder if there was a page limit or a limit on the word count that's how little sense it makes to make this book so short.

A huge redeeming quality of this book was Claire's character, I found her really interesting. She broke up with her boyfriend of 15 years about a year ago, it was an abusive relationship but get this SHE WAS THE ABUSER.
description

Claire's backstory really added personality to the BDSM aspect of this book, where most BDSM books fall flat and a little monotonous and it’s really the biggest reason why I'm giving this the extra .5⭐️

Review from Way Too Hot Books

It's not what it looks like. So, being a fan of kinky fuckery novels, it is logical that I just had to get my hands on this book as soon as I saw it. Not to mention that pretty cover. I'm wondering where did they bought that stockings? :) It was a dull evening and I needed something to lighten my mood - Awakening looked like just the right thing to help me out. Now, if you are expecting whips and chains, St. Andrew's crosses, ball gags and gang bangs in the style of Cherice Sinclair, well... This is not that kind of a book.

What is it than? Imagine what would you get if Tammara Webber, Annabel Joseph and E.L.James would have a child. Can you picture it? Kink 101, sweet romance, brooding but gentle alpha male, intelligent main heroine, interesting setting of the story and, of course, HEA. Fans of hard core BDSM stories or 90% sex/10%storyline novels would probably be disappointed. Elene Salinger in Awakening brings us story of two people who look like someone we can pass everyday in our own boring lives and not even think about twice after we see them. She deals more with real life and emotional aspects of BDSM lifestyle than few steamy spankings or torture.

Was it for me? Or maybe not? I gave it three stars, didn't I? It means that I did enjoy it and that it is not a bad book. Awakening has amazing premise and actual plot, it's not usual sugar-kink erotica that looks more like paranormal romance but instead of vampires or werewolves, you have this big, bad Doms with super powers. Perfect for easing into the genre. I have nothing against books like that, but what I did mind was a bit too much sweetness and few character "attributes". I can't imagine that someone can be that clueless as Claire or that much "exclusive" as Evan. On the other hand, what I seriously adored was bookstore setting - I kept wishing all the time to have something like that in my town.

There will be sequel! Claire's best friend Bridget will get her own novel - Reflection. It's more companion novel than sequel. I'm looking forward to it because I found her much more intriguing than Claire.

If you’re looking for a hardcore BDSM novel, this is not the book for you. If you’re looking for cover to cover sex, this is not the book for you. If you’re looking for a beautiful, 20 something ingénue to be dominated by an equally beautiful, enigmatic, 20 something billionaire dominant, this is not the book for you. What this book does offer is an emotional tale of 2 people coming together after life has dealt them some tough blows. These people are adults & I know that’s a turn off for some. Claire, I’m guessing, is late 30s, early 40s. Evan is 45.

Claire decides after a year of self-imposed exile subsequent to a 14 year abusive relationship that she’s going to join a romance novel book club. The book store, Bibliophile, is owned by Evan. They are instantly attracted to one another. Claire has a long standing affair with romance novels but has refrained from delving into erotica or BDSM despite her curiosity until she is drawn to a book after her first book club meeting. She becomes visibly aroused & judging by Evan’s reaction feels she has disgusted him. However, she continues to come to the book club meetings & Evan surreptitiously guides her reading/education in BDSM after overhearing a conversation between Claire & her new friend, Bridget wherein Claire reveals she’s a closet masochist albeit unaware of her nature. She simply believes she’s damaged & broken. Over time, Claire begins to blossom & come out of her shell with the help of her newly acquired friends & mending her relationship with her estranged brother.

Time passes & it becomes painfully obvious to Claire that Evan is genial & outgoing with everyone but her. Evan, meanwhile, is equally attracted to Claire & hating himself for it as he is still grieving the loss of his beloved wife & submissive of 10 years to ovarian cancer. There is a misunderstanding on his part involving Claire’s brother & things come to head one night leading to an argument between them wherein Claire decides she’s not coming back to the store; thereby forcing Evan to manufacture a reason to get her to come back. Evan offers to become her Dom with the caveat of no sex, telling himself his goal is merely to introduce her safely to the lifestyle. And so it begins…

The author has a knack for breathing life into these characters; even the secondary characters are delightful. She gifted in describing environments befitting their owners & creating a sense of each location. The writing is strong with intelligent vocabulary. There are some typos & misspellings but nothing egregious that distracts from the story. What this story has in spades is realism-every situation & conversation is relatable. The author seems to have a fairly extensive knowledge of BDSM (not that I’m an expert by any means) & at times it reads almost as a cautionary tale to the audience against rushing headlong into a situation which can cause irrevocable harm; thought provoking given the current propensity towards all things D/s. Claire’s trepidation at embracing her submissive nature is deftly written as well as Evan’s reluctance to enter into a relationship as he feels it would be a betrayal of his wife. Both characters are well developed & their evolution is believable. Neither is weak or annoying; they are intelligent, strong willed & flawed, like all of us.

Best part-it’s one book!!! No trilogy!

Refreshing Look at BDSM

This is not your typical BDSM story.  There’s no dominating sinfully-sexy alpha male billionaire who stumbles upon a 20-something woman and all of a sudden needs to make her his sub. It’s not filled with page after page sex.  There are no dungeons, clubs, or hardcore scenes.  But, there IS an emotional story that delves in to the “other” side of a BDSM relationship – the emotional and psychological side.  BDSM is not all about the act.  It’s about discovery, passion, emotion, and most of all trust.

Not having fully recovered from the ending of separate long term relationships, Claire and Evan merely go through the motions of life without really living it.  Claire decides that it’s time for her to stop hiding and joins a book club at a local bookstore, Bibliophile. Bibliophile is owned by Evan. From the first time Claire steps foot in his bookstore, Evan’s world is turned upside down.  He is instantly attracted to her; he sees a beautiful and fragile woman whom he feels the need to protect.  Not since the death of his wife, and sub, three years ago has Evan practiced BDSM or even felt the desire to….. that is, until Claire walked through his front door.  But Evan vowed that he would never enter into another relationship.  Not wanting to break that promise, Evan tries to steer clear of Claire which becomes increasing difficult when she spends more and more time in his store.

The bookstore becomes a sanctuary for Claire.  While exploring the store after club meetings, Claire finds she’s interested in BDSM novels.  Embarrassed to have Evan see her purchase a BDSM book, Claire decides that she’ll just read them while she’s in the store and replace them before she leaves.  Still drawn to her, Evan constantly watches Claire from behind the stacks and notices her interest.  Knowing this only causes Evan’s attraction to grow; but still, he continues to distance himself.

One night after a club meeting, Evan over hears a conversation between Claire another book club member.  While discussing her past relationship, Claire admits that she had a need to cause vicious verbal fights with her boyfriend and push him to the point where he would hit her.  As he listens, the discussion moves toward Claire’s interest in exploring BDSM.  Between the books and her admission, Evan sees that Claire has a need for impact play.  Knowing that being introduced to the BDSM lifestyle properly is crucial, Evan feels the need to be the one to help her.  Not wanting to get close to Claire and break his promise, Evan begins leaving out specific books for her to “find”.

After a “misunderstanding”, Evan finally offers to teach Claire and introduce her to the lifestyle.  This is where the story really begins……..  Together, Claire and Evan embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery.  Evan brings Claire into his world of BDSM, but can Evan learn to live again and break the strong hold his past has on him?

What I loved most about this book is the focus on the emotional and psychological side of a BDSM relationship.  The majority of the book is dedicated to Claire and Evan building their relationship, getting to know one another, and most of all learning to trust.  Don’t get me wrong – there were hot and steamy scenes, but the scenes become even hotter when the emotional element is intertwined.  This is a refreshing look into BDSM.

Refreshing. Interesting. Annoying. The title is more than appropriate. If you're looking for a BDSM book that is different than the rest of the hardcore stories out there, look no further. Awakening will be perfect for you.

This is a story about Claire Ryan, a 35-year-old woman trying to recover after the break-up of an abusive relationship, and Evan Lang, a 45-year-old man who's never recovered from the death of his wife. Claire joins a local romance book club, and meets Evan – the owner of the book shop – there. They are almost instantly attracted to each other, but they are also both damaged, and have a lot of issues to deal with.

Claire is a submissive, but she's completely unaware of her nature and needs guidance into the world of BDSM. Evan, on the other hand, is an experienced Dom, and he's the perfect person to help Claire discover her true needs, but he's not been interested in any kind of relationship ever since his wife died.

To make matters worse, once they finally start with the ‘sessions' that are supposed to help Claire safely enter the lifestyle, things will become even more complicated.

Awakening is anything but a typical BDSM story. It is refreshing, as it concentrates on the emotional side of the relationship, instead of simply jumping to sex scenes. Characters are realistic and likable. The pace of the story leaves a lot to be desired, though. It is just too slow, for far too long, and then everything feels too rushed and a bit unrealistic close to the end. I was hoping we'll get to see more of Evan and Claire together outside of the ‘sessions', instructions and BDSM talk. As it, unfortunately, did not happen, their love for each other seemed a bit too sudden and out of place.

Still, this is a good story for those of you looking for a new perspective on BDSM, or something close to BDSM 101.

An eye opening book for me. It’s a BDSM “full length novel” though the BDSM is light. In the book, Claire learns about the basics of BDSM and the difference between abuse and impact play. She talks about a past vanilla relationship where she would push the guy’s buttons until he hit her, and she didn't stop there. Sometimes she would push him until he flat out beat her. By the end of the relationship he hated her for “who she made him” and she hated herself for what “she had done”. (Quoting the book here).

While in a vanilla setting I would flat out call that abuse, as a submissive who is starting to recognize a pattern in her own life, I have to wonder about the implications in the book. Was Claire’s ex abusive? Absolutely. Was it her fault? Probably a good bit of it was, yes, especially since she admits to pushing his buttons solely to get him to hurt her and hit her. Was it healthy? Absolutely not.

However I see a lot of myself in the character of Claire. I notice a pattern of pushing from myself towards the men I love (both past and present). I’ve noticed that in the past I would fight to see if someone could “handle” me. A phrase I use to “excuse” my behavior. I wanted a man who wouldn’t let me boss him around, someone who wouldn’t let me push them past their limits. While I didn’t realize I was looking for a Dominant at the time, I knew that whatever I was getting from those relationships wasn’t what I was seeking. I certainly had no idea about Impact Play or that it was what I was doing, even with unwilling participants who would get just as angry back at me but never gave me what it was I was seeking (how could they? I didn’t even know what I was seeking!)

In short, this book will capture your heart, open your eyes and sweep you off your feet. And the author is pretty awesome too (she even commented on my blog TWICE when she came across my review of her book!)

I've happily recommended this book to anyone and everyone who asks for great BDSM novels that give you not only what you want but the information you need ;)

***This book was provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.***

I spent a lot of time on the fence with this book.

To be honest, I didn’t find Evan to be a very likable male lead. I’m still not quite sure what it was that drew Claire to him. I did like that he recognized what it was Claire was looking for before she realized it and the roundabout way he helped her to discover what that was. His feelings for his late wife were incredibly raw, and I don’t feel like he had enough time to come to terms with them before realizing he was in love with Claire.

I was left a little confused as to why Claire felt the need to banish herself from the public for so long. However, I have to give the author props. I think her past relationship issues were unique and interesting. That’s something I really would have liked to have read more about. We were given hints at how bad her relationship with her parents was, but again, I’d like to have seen more of that. I think it could have added more depth to her character.

Some of the love scenes were hot, but

I also thought the ending was a bit rushed. As I said before. I don’t feel as though Evan had time to come to terms with his wife’s loss before he fell in love with Claire.

I do think the author writes well; her descriptions were nice without overwhelming the story, and I absolutely loved Claire’s friend, Bridget. But the characterization just wasn’t there for Claire and Evan.

Overall, this book didn’t do it for me.

Ok so where do I begin with this book? I picked it up when I saw another author I enjoy list this book on her website. I figured 'Why not". The book is about Evan who refused to get over his dead wife even when he sees and falls for Claire. She herself is damaged from years of emotional abuse and physical abuse. When the topic of BDSM was brought into the book I was excited because due to a certain trilogy, I have been reading more and more of those types of books. I have found I personally enjoy BDSM the books but have found much better reading/authors then the above mentioned trilogy. This book ,however, surprized me because instead of the actual actions of BDSM it is telling you about the correct way to begin a BDSM relationship. The characters spend alot of "getting to know each other" and "trust building" before anything sexual really happens. I found this really refreshing because I enjoyed seeing an author show the "responsible" side of D/s building especially with the fact that people are flocking to this life style without knowing whats right and wrong. Evan was very conccerned with Claire being "green" in the lifestyle and not wanting her already damanged pysche to meet up with a bad person using BDSM as a way to abuse a young, naive girl. So IF you are looking for just a book of naughty BDSM sex, this maynot be the book for you....yes there are realtions BUT the BDSM aspect is very light in comparison to toher books out there. I actually enjoyed the refreshing look at the new popular lifestyle.

First in The Chrysalis erotic romance with an intense and well-directed focus on BDSM. The story takes place in River Rock, Vermont.

Awakening won the New Writing Competition at the Festival of Romance in 2011. And I thoroughly understand why.

My Take
WOW! Excellent!! This was one of the few really well done BDSM stories I've read. I can tell (after I read Sallinger's thank yous) that she received excellent and careful advice about the BDSM scene---I had thought she was merely, merely?!, very well versed in it. Evan's concerns that she find the right person. Bridget's acceptance and explanations. Pointing out the damage that can be done by emotional abuse---I'll say it again, parents oughta be licensed!

The foundation of any relationship is honesty, but in BDSM it is even more critical because...

Sallinger drove me crazy with the build-up---there is one heck of a lot of foreplay in this for the reader! Starting with that "she hadn't found enough scalding water to cleanse her soul of her crimes" and slowly, oh, so damned slowly, revealing bit by bit the truth of that crime. Truly beautifully done. And if I thought the build-up to the horrifying reveal was slow...oh man, the romantic build-up was even longer. For those who don't want the insta-love...you've come to the right story, LOL. Never have two people fought so hard to deny their attraction! And, again, beautifully done.

I love how these two are so aroused by each other, having such a difficult time attempting to relieve their individual arousal on their own---the whole want/don't want around which they dance. They have such real-world feelings and reactions.

Sallinger reveals the care required by a dominant and never does it make more sense than in the romance between Claire and Evan. If you think you may be interested in the D/s angle in your own sex life, I recommend you read this book as Sallinger puts it so very well as to the concerns you should have. It could certainly save some people. I just cried about the destructive nature of Charlie and Claire's relationship. Sallinger could have gotten a lot more tears out of me if she'd brought in more detail about Charlie and his reactions. Hmmm, is that a good thing or a bad thing??

At times, Awakening is a touch clinical, but I can easily forgive this for the original touches Sallinger puts to this story. Claire's...ahem...reading sessions are certainly reason enough, LOL. Evan's own fears may be a bit over-the-top---his reactions to Claire certainly are---but grief can twist a person up. And most sane people want to avoid bringing any more such pain into their lives. And the abuse angle is a good reminder that abusers can be found anywhere.

Just re-reading my notes brings tears to my own eyes---again!---with the pain of Evan's loss. His anger and frustration and grief are just so real and pulls my own sense of loss out.

Tiny streamers stroked him, the damp heat reminiscent of small tongues on his flesh.

Even knowing how it is "supposed" to turn out, I was on pins and needles as to how Sallinger would get around Evan's angry reactions and boorish behavior and the pain it caused Claire. I loved that Evan could recognize his behavior. An unusual combination of empathy and self-enlightenment in a soldier.

I loved how Sallinger brought Claire into the BDSM world. It still cracks me when I think about Evan's method for introducing Claire to the BDSM world! Unorthodox and it appealed to my own love for books, and I think there are a number of angles which could speak to a lot of readers.

Whoa, that scene in the bookstore when Evan finally cracks...phew *as I shake my fingers from the heat*

I love that Claire has a backbone even if she is so uncomfortable, at her age, with her own body and her needs. Her lack of information. Her anger. Heck, Evan's anger and grief over his loss. His fear. The sense of "okayness" from Evan being man enough to apologize. That everyone has secret shames they want to hide. There's a nice undercurrent that I'm not sure Sallinger intended in that there's resolution when one faces up to one's issues.

To love and be loved. To trust intrinsically that you could be yourself and not be judged or rejected.

The Story
Claire Ryan is finally ready to push past her near isolation and venture into the world. A first step which takes her into Bibliophile and the Romance Readers Book Club and leads to a world even greater and eyeopening than she could have expected.

The Characters
Claire Ryan is a diamond grader and jewelry appraiser who retreated from the world in fear of her abusive disability and has not done anything socially alone in 15 years. Chester is her pit bull terrier. Charlie is her ex-boyfriend. Marcus is the brother she hasn't spoken to in ten years.

Evan Lane, an ex-military man who enjoys classical movies and owns Bibliophile, an independent bookstore that stocks unusual selections. Marianne is/was his beloved and fiery wife.

Jean leads the Romance Readers Book Club and seems to have an instinctive knowledge of how far to push. Bridget, a chemistry professor, is already a good friend of Evan's and becomes friends with Claire.

The Cover
The cover is generic with Claire lying down with her shoulder in the foreground and a bent, stocking-clad leg in the background. I wish they'd incorporated a book into the cover...

The title is what it's about, Claire's Awakening. Although...I do believe Evan woke up as well.

ARC provided by Net Gallery in exchange for an honest review.

Not quite a 4 star but a bit more than a 3.5 star read.

Claire has been a shut in for the last year, ready to finally set out into the world and her first social setting. A book club. She never expected the owner of the story to catch her eye nor the hidden desires found within the pages of the erotic novels found on the shelves. But Claire also never realized that her past contained signs of a certain need that she never opened her mind to. When she finds that D/s themed books are exciting her more and more the pieces start to fall into place.

Evan never expected to desire a woman after losing his wife, who was also his sub for ten years. So when the meek woman walked into his bookstore and his body reacted, Evan couldn't understand what it was about her and more importantly he didn't want to understand it.

But when he over hears her talking about her past and how she craved the abuse that she provoked, he instantly recognized the signs. Claire had no idea that what she truly craved was disciplined submission. Evan doesn't understand why he desires to be the one to take her on this journey, he can't stand the idea of having another woman after losing his wife, but he can't seem to let Claire go.

When faced with the idea that she could venture into this world without the proper care, Evan decides that he wants to be the one to show her this side of herself, but without the sexual or emotional relationship.

As Claire is eased into a safe way to feel pain and expose the pain in her past her feelings for Evan grow. But Evan still can't bare to let go of the memory of his wife, but his need to claim Claire is too much to deny.

This story took a while to get into, I was pleased once we got past the start of the story we were able to jump from encounter to encounter without having to have much story filler between. Evan's character was likable and towards the end when he finally had to face the choice of his past or a future, it was heartwarming. It's hard to explain what it was about this that just left me so in between.

There was no way for these two to go from attraction, to hostile to D/s quickly - so I get that drawn out portion of the story to finally get them to a point where what they were going to do made sense. But then once they got there, we had little time to sit back and enjoy their journey. I really would have loved more scenes of him providing her with the experiences so that she found a bit more self discovery before the grand finale.

The first half of the book I was scared I was going to give up on it. It was just too much story for me. But I get why. The author wants you to feel exactly what both parties are experiencing and feeling before and after their agreement.

Claire Ryan was in an abusive marriage for 14yrs. Not ending well, her ex hates what she's turned him into and she's left all alone. She finds comfort in a local book store where she has joined the book club for romance readers. What she doesn't know is that Bibliophile holds the answers she's been looking for.

Evan Lane is the owner of Bibliophile. He's been a widow for 10yrs. Marianne was the love of his life and he's made sure not to find anyone else. At least he thought their couldn't be anyone else. That is until things stir up when he sees the new member of the book club, Claire.

You can feel the tension since the moment these two engage. Claire has stirred up emotions in Evan that he doesn't even know what to do with himself. Claire thinks she disgusts Mr. Rugged (love the nickname). What he does notice is that she's gone out of her comfort zone and is now reading new books. She's looking into the Erotica books. He takes it upon himself to leave books out to catch her eye. He wants to know if what he feels is right. Evan thinks Claire is a submissive and is looking for a Dom. He offers to be her Dom. One little catch...No Sex!! (Seriously WTF Evan)

This is where the story got better for me. Claire is trying to find herself. Giving the agreement a chance to see if this is what she wants and needs. Stubborn Evan can't let go of the past. He doesn't want to betray Marianne. Claire is driving him crazy and he's about to loose control. Let me tell you, Evan is all Alpha and has a filthy mouth(Swoon). He's the perfect Dom. Can these two broken souls heal each other?

I was wrong about the book. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I love the details and the explanations of everything from their past feelings, agreement and their BDSM relationship. One of my favorite scenes was when Claire visited Marianne's grave and Marianne visited Evan in his dream. That gave me hope for their relationship. Yes there is an HEA and a beautiful one it is.

Awakening by Elene Sallinger
B+, inferno, moderate kink, contemp/BDSM, 224 pages

Evan, local bookshop owner, lost his wife/submissive to cancer 10 years ago. He was so in love with his wife that he can't imagine loving anyone else. Claire is slowly entering the land of the living again after 1 year of self-imposed isolation following the breakup of her marriage. Her first adventure is to attend a book club meeting at Evan's bookshop. Evan's physical reaction to Claire is strong, but definitely unwanted. Then he overhears a conversation between Claire and a friend. He realizes Claire knows nothing about BDSM, but it may be exactly what she needs. What's a Dom to do?

Here's the thing, Evan's an ass. He really is. The way he deals with his attraction to Claire is avoidance. In fact for the first 1/3 of the book, Evan and Claire barely talk. But he's written in such a way that I completely got the ass-ishness and was okay with it.

Elene Sallinger has written strong characters with compelling stories. There is a unique tone to this story. A gradual build-up to a relationship here, rather than a 'first meeting equals first scene' pace that is usually seen in BDSM novels. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

A special note: References to Yoda and Harry Potter had my inner geek doing a happy dance.

*huge grin*

Ok.. so now back to the review, with the countless comparisons to FSOG i was prepared not to like this book that much. Though other than the kink, it is nothing like FS, the kink/BDSM in this book is not anyway near as hardcore as fifty (and thats saying something since fifty is not hardcore).
This story is actually really lovely, it is people working through tough times in their life & more importantly it is self discovery. Their are not a lot of actual sex scenes but there are enough & all of the sexual scenes are hot. In fact a certain book shop scene had me squirming in my seat.
I was really glad i read this book and didnt write it off after being lumped in with FSOG. It was a great way to spend a few hours & i would recommend it.

As a quick note, I've noticed a lot of reviews say this isn't your typical BDSM story because, basically, it's not 50 Shades of Grey. Well... this *should* be the typical BDSM romance, because 50 Shades of Grey is an absolutely terrible portrayal of BDSM, and it's giving readers very wrong ideas about what BDSM actually entails. So please, read this instead of 50 Shades if you want to know what a healthier BDSM relationship should be like.

The Lemon Review

Hello Lemonheads! I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Elene Sallinger’s novel Awakening. Elene creates two complex characters who must overcome the pain of their past relationships in order to move forward together. Elene’s cover selection lets the reader know that Claire and Evan will definitely be burning up the sheets as they move towards a future together. Although, this is a definite grapefruit due to BDSM themes unlike many grapefruits there is a slow development to those sexy scenes.

The beginning of Awakening may start off very cliché, but Elene quickly spins an unexpected tale. Claire has spent the past year trying to regain the courage to live again, after the end of her 14 year abusive relationship. Now, I must interject here quickly, because I want everyone to know that I am completely against abuse and I do not believe that any woman, man, or child “asks” or “deserves” to be threatened physically, emotionally, or mentally. Many victims of abuse often deal with battered woman syndrome and believe that they deserve the horrors that they have faced. Claire is different though. Her ex, Charlie, did beat her, but Claire has always seen herself as the abuser due to mental and emotional abuse she inflicted on him.

“The thing was it really wasn't Charlie’s fault…He was so good. Everything about him was so good…She felt incredibly inferior next to him…She knew each and every button to push…all she wanted was to bring him down to her level…Charlie had lost it. He’d hit her repeatedly and when she’d fallen to the floor he’d kicked her. She’d cried and begged for him to stop, but inside she’d felt at peace. She’d felt she was finally good enough because he wasn't so perfect anymore. She’d felt as if she could finally handle the pain raging through her, as if the tears were a release and she could finally breathe.”

The disastrous relationship has made Claire gun shy and fearful of purposely sabotaging any future relations. Due to the mental and emotional abuse Claire doled out and the physical abuse Charlie retaliated with their sex life became non-existent and only perfunctory to meet a physical need. She fears a repetitive cycle until she joins a book group and is introduced to some juicy lemons of her own. As her own sexuality begins to awaken she can’t help but enjoy some fantasies of her own that star Bibliophile’s owner, Evan. And who wouldn’t fantasize about a tall, dark, sexy book lover.

Evan has lived the life of a hermit since the death of his wife and submissive, Marianne. The one and only time Evan tried to move on he was unable to perform and the guilt he felt for even attempting another D/s relationship filled him with such pain he chose to close himself off. For the past several years even self-gratification has not interested him until Claire walks into his book store, Bibliophile. As soon as his eyes set on her all of his Dom protective instincts kick into high gear, and he soon discovers his pants getting a little tight. Even so, Evan chooses to maintain his distance from Claire due to guilt and fear of not being able to shield and protect Claire from all things, including death; thus their interactions are limited and rocky to begin with. The only thing that overcomes his insecurities is a greater fear that Claire may put herself in danger as her interest in BDSM grows.

“There was a reason people said that a little knowledge was a dangerous thing. What if this man she was with was as inexperienced as she was and did something that hurt her? Or, worse, what if he was experienced and deliberately set out to hurt her?”

His fear for Claire’s safety soon overrides his insecurities and he plans to awaken Claire to her inner needs and sexuality. He will be her Dom but he plans on never crossing the line into a sexual relationship.

Elene delves into the psychological triggers for both characters and the reasons why they have chosen the lifestyles they have selected. Both characters have been sleepwalking through life until they run into each other and they begin to “awaken” once again. The deep, trusting relationship that develops over the course of the book allows both Evan and Claire to overcome the grief of their past relationships. It truly is a beautiful thing to see two lost, broken souls find and mend one another in this sexy, sweet and tangy grapefruit.

Until next time Lemonheads, keep enjoying those citrusy reads!

My Initial Reaction…
This was an okay erotic romance. I didn’t connect to the characters the way I like to and the story was extremely predictable, but the erotic scenes were pretty good, making Awakening a solid 3 star read for me.
.
The Characters…
Awakening is told from the point of view of Claire and Evan. They’re both likeable characters for the most part, though I just didn’t connect to them. I think it might be because they were just a bit toogeneric. There were no surprises in either of them.
Claire is coming out of an abusive relationship and trying to find her way back into the world. She’s very down on herself and doesn’t think she’s worthy of love. But she’s trying to connect with people again and she sees joining a book club as a way to do just that. And through her time at the book store where the book club is held she finds her way to the erotica section and starts fantasizing about BDSM.

Lucky for Claire, the book store owner – Evan – just so happens to be a Dom, who’s very attracted to her. He sees in her the submissive that needs to be taken care of and it calls to him. But he’s not a practicing Dom right now, because his last submissive was his wife, who died from cancer years earlier. He’s still deeply in love with her and can’t move on, even if Claire calls to him. But he wants to take care of Claire and introduce her to the D/s lifestyle. So, he’s doesn’t know what to do.

I really liked Evan and Claire – and the little bits we got of two or three side characters – and enjoyed watching Claire gain her confidence. I just didn’t connect to them. There was nothing about either of them that struck me as particularly unique – I could insert either of them into hundreds of other stories and they would fit. So I wasn’t really invested in their story, probably because I never had any doubts about how it would turn out.

The Story…
In true erotica fashion, Awakening‘s story is propelled by the sexual encounters. Yes, you have Claire who’s new to the BDSM lifestyle and timid about exploring it. And you have widower Evan trying to deal with his feelings for Claire when he still longs for his wife. But the story would have gone no where if it weren’t for the sex. And that’s fine with me – it’s what I expect in an erotica. But the realsex didn’t start happening until after the halfway point. There was lots of Claire falling asleep fantasizing about her books and eventually Evan, but it just took too long to get to their relationship. Evan was standoffish and unkind just a bit too long IMHO.

I will say, though, that once it got going it was pretty good. And I liked that Elene balanced the sexual aspects of the D/s relationship with the emotional ones, providing a little bit more substance to the story. I just wished that the story were a little bit less predictable.

Concluding Sentiments…
If you’ve read a few books (which you probably have if you’re reading this review) you already know these characters from the little I’ve written and you know how this story is going to go. But if you like a little bit of BDSM play, Awakening delivers pretty well.

I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This was an ARC NetGalley copy and I have to say I liked it, even though it wasn't quite as "erotica" as advertised.
Claire is coming off of a year long self-exile after her 14 year relationship ends. Evan hasn't been with anyone since his wife and BDSM partner Marianne died of ovarian cancer years earlier. Claire enters the local bookstore Bibliophile for her book club. Evan is the owner. Evan, pretty much falls head over heels in love with Claire at first sight, but denies himself the pleasure of getting to know her because he feels unfaithful to his dead wife.
Claire slowly opens up to a book club member about her past relationship with Charlie, and why it went south. Claire blames herself for the abuse she suffered at Charlie's hands- saying that she goaded him into beating her because it made her feel better. Evan, overhearing this, decides that Claire really should be getting into BDSM, and starts leaving out erotic romance books for her, starting off with light BDSM and slowly building. Claire, reluctant to admit to anyone that this turns her on, but reading these books in the reading room of Bibliophile and getting off on them in front of Evan, makes me doubt her reluctance. Seemed to me she wanted Evan to know that she was into these books. It also doesn't hurt to know that Evan is the star of her fantasies.
When Evan proposes to be Claire's guide into the world of BDSM, but without a sexual relationship, Claire jumps at the chance. Hiding her feelings from Evan is hard, but she is bound to do it. Evan hiding his feelings from Claire is just as hard, and as determined as he is to keep things sex free, his penis has other ideas, and one sex scene later, Evan is feeling guiltier.
One dream of his dead wife later, who basically gives him permission to move on, Evan is going after Claire like a lovesick teenager.
70% of this book is basically Evan and Claire denying their feelings for one another while dancing around the BDSM issue, which, honestly, is not a main character, or even a minor character in this book. Evan spanks Claire a few times. That is the full extent of the BDSM in this story. Considering this was billed as an "erotic romance" the erotic aspect was sorely lacking. There was very little actual sex, and more talk of what one would like to do to the other, but this read more like a high school romance with some dirty thoughts than a true adult erotic novel.
I did like the way the author introduced the characters and built up their relationship, but just when things were getting to the hot and heavy, the book ends with a "happily ever after" type ending.
I did enjoy this, but disagree with the author on what type of book this was. If I had to categorize it, I would say it was chick-lit. Simple as that.

Article first published as Book Review: Awakening by Elene Sallinger on Blogcritics.

Awakening by Elene Sallinger is another title that's been compared to Fifty Shades of Grey because of the BDSM element in the book. However, the huge difference is that the female character in this book is actually a submissive - or wants to be, anyway. At the beginning of the book we meet Claire, a woman who is still trying to get over the breakdown of a ten year relationship, and she forces herself to start living again. The first thing she does is join a book club for romance readers at her local book shop. Whilst there, she meets the owner of the book shop, Evan, who has a profound effect on her. She also discovers the shop has an erotica section and finds herself drawn to the titles which contain female submissives. And this is where her journey begins.

Evan notices what Claire is up to, and the feelings that have been long buried since his wife died are coming back to the surface. He wants to dominate Claire, to help her discover D/s relationships in the right way. Eventually, the two of them come to an understanding, and Claire's sexy awakening begins. The trouble is, things quickly become complicated between them - and it could be the making or the breaking of their arrangement. Will they work out their differences and overcome their respective pasts?

This was a fantastic read. I really enjoyed reading about both of the main characters and found them very rounded and I could totally understand why they were drawn to one another. I whizzed through page after page of this book, desperate to know what happened next and how things would resolve themselves. The sex, although not frequent in this book, is incredibly hot and except for a couple of lines towards the end that made me cringe, this was a brilliant erotic romance, and one I'd recommend for fans of BDSM novels.

Claire Ryan knows something must be wrong with her. Pushing her longtime boyfriend into hating her is bad enough. Pushing him to abuse her so she can find some sort of release makes her feel as if she is worthless.

From the first moment he sees her, Evan Lang knows he is in trouble. The vulnerable, fragile-looking woman who walks into his bookstore screams to the Dom in him that has been dormant since his wife’s passing.

Claire finds herself instantly attracted to Evan, but he wants nothing to do with her until, after many nights of building sexual tension, it all explodes, and both find themselves entangled in each other’s arms. Not ready to give his heart away but willing to explore the BDSM side his body craves, Evan agrees to teach Claire about the world and why he thinks it is what she has been craving all this time. He knows she is going to learn things about herself that will scare her and have her run from the truth. He just does not expect to find himself facing a truth about himself that will have him questioning whether he should run away or not.

I have always enjoyed a good BDSM novel. There is something about this genre that has to be written a certain way. Too much information in a scene and you feel like you are reading a manual about bondage. Not enough information and you find yourself being disconnected from the storyline and the characters. Ms. Sallinger has the perfect combination to make this tale exquisitely beautiful, touchingly heart-wrenching and hedonistic enough to keep your body on fire. Awakening shows Claire as she grows from being a woman who questions everything about herself into a person who is comfortable with expecting the respect she deserves. On top of this revelation, we have Evan, the proverbial tortured hero who struggles throughout the story to fight the very nature that calls to every BDSM bone in his body. What an outstanding work by an author I have not read before. You can bet I will be looking for books from Ms. Sallinger in the future!

Claire Ryan is about to embark on a journey she never saw coming. After a hard break up from an unhealthy relationship she should have ended long ago, she decides to join the world one step at a time. Claire decides to start with a book club at a quaint local book store named Bibliophile.

Evan Lang is still in love with his wife who he lost to cancer, so he fills his days with the other love in his life, his book store. When he sees a woman who stirs long dead feelings he's angry with her and himself. To make mattes worse, he sees her quietly sneaking to read the store's BDSM erotica, embarrassed but aroused. An overheard conversation later he knows she's way more than he expected, and he's just the man to give her the awakening she needs. However, when his own demons come to surface he may have underestimated just how much he needs her in return.

Awakening was one of the more unique tales of a woman's journey into discovering her submission. Although the insta love was a disappointment, the heartbreak and struggle was inspirational .Palatable emotions and deep characters lead way to a nicely flowing storyline suitable for an array of readers. The sex was hot but didn't take away or make up the storyline. The depth of emotion between the characters and involved in the D/s relationship was accurate and led to a believable HEA. And of course I wish Bibliophile was a real book store because it made me want to curl up in the reading section in the back and enjoy.

I wasn't sure I was going to review this on my blog. This site tends toward young adult with the occasional younger book thrown in. But, I realized I'm a grown adult and I think most of my readers are as well.

I've read a few BSDM books. Some of it really is hard for me to take. But, this one was presented in a very 'tasteful" fashion. I think it would be good for those easing themselves in the genre. I really liked Claire. It's interesting to me that she came from a very abusive relationship. While you constantly hear of women who claim they deserved their beatings, Claire actually craved it. But, she never recognized that it was delivered in the wrong context. It wasn't until her relationship is long over that she realized what it was she wanted. But, these types of relationships take care and consideration. They aren't to be entered into lightly.

I understood that Claire had an intense attraction to Evan. But I was a little disappointed that she agreed to his terms. I know she realized that she was not a replacement for his deceased wife, but Evan never realized that. It was like he refused to see Claire for herself. In turn, he was denying himself what he really wanted. If her recognized Claire as a true submissive, he was doing her a great disservice by treating her the way he did.

I'm happy they finally admitted what they both needed. I liked that this book was not just about the BSDM lifestyle but about the dynamics of the relationship.

Welllll...3 Stars

I had high hopes for this book, but it just didn't do it for me. I felt the description was a little misleading. I thought it would be lots of sex, about their D/s relationship and then she breaks it off in the end because he won't commit.

Well I guess in a way the book did that but in a round about way. It was very slow moving. The first 2/3 I of the book is just Claire talking to herself and trying to discover and read about what a D/s relationship is about. I felt like I was reading a text book. There was no emotion, no falling in love....no nothing. Evan and Claire don't even get together till after the first half of the book! This is not what I expected. There was only a couple is sex scenes...they were good but again...it fell a little flat for me. The whole book felt a little text bookish that I felt little emotion and connection. I guess I just expected more. How can they declare their love after only having had sex once?! There just wasn't enough of Evan and Claire just being together, instead of him trying to be a teacher the whole time. Because of that, it lost the passion.

I really enjoyed Awakening, I love romance novels with an extra added spice and this was perfect for me. Both Claire and Evan were grieving, Claire from her relationship break-up and Evan due to his wife dying. Evan really fell for Claire but refuses to get over his dead wife, there was a lot of emotional baggage on both sides.

I liked that Claire and Evan got to know each other a lot first and that for those contemplating BDSM, with trust building too. I would imagine if you do not trust the other person completely that the whole scene would be very scary.

I liked that Awakening was written with compassion and there is a good story to it and not just about sex, Obviously there was some BDSM and sex in the book but not too much to detract from the main story.

This is the first book I have read from the author Elene Sallinger and I thoroughly enjoyed it and will look out for more of her work. She is a fantastic author.

AWAKENING is such a gentle love story. One woman's introduction to BDSM. One man's return to love after being widowed. The fact that their relationship unfolds in a book store adds an extra layer of sweetness. The tale unfolds SLOWLY, in an almost Victorian manner, yet set in the modern day. A courtship and introduction to new worlds for her, saying goodbye the the past for him. It's a story not without frustration, pain, and avoidance. Old wounds surface and demand attention. The seduction will be a bumpy, but meaningful one.

That said, the title suggests the relationship between Claire and Evan is that exactly...an awakening...for both of them.

Fans of Cherise Sinclair will enjoy Awakening. Evan is a Dom with a hard past and a heart of gold. He has a flogger...carry on.

'Awakening' was really an incredible story, it showed how intimate and loving a BDSM relationship can be. Steamy, romantic, AND educational; I am so glad I read this book!!

Our heroine, Claire, is on a journey of self discovery and growth, though she doesn't realize it. She is an avid reader of romance novels, and breaks out of her self-induced seclusion to join a book club. (I like her already!)

Our hero, Evan, has been trapped in his own form of seclusion, grief. He reluctantly gets wrapped up in Claire's journey and is integral to her healing. In the process of gently awakening Claire to the world of BDSM, Evan is forced to come to terms with his own problems.

This book pointed out how a little bit of knowledge (gained from our favorite erotic novels) can be dangerous. If novels have awakened your BDSM side, it pays to do your research before jumping into the lifestyle.

I received a free copy of this via Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Thank you Net Galley for providing me with a copy of this book for an honest review.

This book is listed as erotica and definitely fits the bill. The book focuses on two characters, Evan and Claire. Evan is an independent book store owner who lost his beloved wife to cancer. Claire is just getting back into the "real world" after getting out of an abusive relationship. The book really delves into both characters and their growing attraction.

I would consider this book more "deep" that most erotica novels because it focuses more on the characters than the bedroom. Although those scenes are there and are quite well-written, they hold more impact because you feel you know the characters. Although this book was a bit too long and the bedroom scenes fully concentrated at the end of the book, I enjoyed it.

This story is both romantic and crass; it makes you feel an array of emotions, as you go through the journey of both Evan and Claire as they seek answers to who they are.

The author does a great job with character growth, you learn more about them as they learn more about themselves and each other. My only complaint about the book is that at times the story felt a little forced and repetitive, but those moments were few and far between

It was a good book. Characters were well developed but the story seemed to drag at some points. Not full of hot, steamy sex if that's what you're looking for. A nice story for a rainy day.
