“We make the World Eaters look like school kids” – love Gabriel.

The Stromark Massacre has two linked stories bundled into one. This one features the Flesh Tearers and Angels Encarmine – both Blood Angel successor chapters. The Stromark system has fallen into rebellion and the sons of Sanguinius have been sent to end the conflict and return the system to the Emperor's light. On Stromark Prime, the Flesh Tearers descend with their most feared warriors – the bloodthirsty Death Company – to tear the heart from the rebellion. But as the murderous Space Marines rampage through Stromark Prime's palace, the world's governor may hold their fates in her hands. Meanwhile on Stromark Secundus, the Angels Encarmine send down a force of veterans to despatch any remaining resistance. But how can these ancient warriors survive in a radioactive wasteland? And why have they not been deployed for more than a millennium?

Just like the Dark Angels, I feel the Flesh Tearers are another borderline heretical chapter. Their disregard for human life is nil and goes beyond what some Chapters have been branded heretics for. This can be seen throughout the action aboard the Cowl the narrator states human crew lives are measured in single digits and just working and living aboard the strike cruiser ‘kill’ the crew. It’s just my take, but I do feel these more extreme chapters lose all balance and for me needed to be brought to heel in this regard. I should talk about these two audio dramas. From the Blood is rather an interesting story – it’s essentially Flesh Tearers descending on the world of Stormark Prime to put down a rebellion. Chaplain Appollus is your typical zealous Chaplain and member of the Death Company – basically like World Eaters in their love of just tearing things up. The story has some nice build up aboard the strike cruiser Cowl that gives you some insight into the background and mindset of the chapter – every chapter has some kind of unique ‘ism’. The ending, well there’s a nice twist that did surprise me.

The second story in this duology from C Z Dunn Terror Nihil focuses on another Blood Angel successor chapter called Angel Encarmine assault Stromark Secundus to pacify any reinforcements that they could send to Stromark Prime. They are racing against time. It’s a wasteland and both the environment and terrain are difficult for even Space Marines to endure. I did like the spin with this chapter that they’ve been in-active for over a thousand years. I mean, the reasoning is rather unique, though at the same time I found it a bit petty and silly. Sorry for being vague, I’m trying to avoid spoilers here. I had a hard time with this story as character wise I couldn’t really engage with anyone. Doubly so for Castellan Zargo, who just turned into a plot lock for the story to grow if I’m honest.

Overall The Stromark Massacre is OK, but really doesn’t do much for me. I do have a hard time engaging with these chapters who don’t give a damn about the directive to defend and protect the Imperium. This is really an overall question of lore, but at the same time, the Flesh Tearers don’t care about their human serfs as I’ve mentioned. So, I’m in the middle as the voice acting is excellent, though Appollus voice does getting grating over an extended period of time. Kind of ‘whelmed I with this one.

I wish I could split the two halves up here because I have to say Terror Nihil deserves four stars for a compelling portrait of Space Marine Dreadnoughts, but the first part was pretty mid. I'd say low three to high two star for that first part. Oh well.

The single star is for From the Blood which I found to be bad, Terror Nihil was dreadful

I like it. I think it portrays descendants of the original blood angels very well. they are nearing the point that the world eaters were at right before the heresy, which is right where they should be after their primarch's death.

The Flesh Tearers get portrayed terribly and seem more like bullies than guardians of mankind...
