Rate this book
A novella of loyalty and survival—in which three soldiers must survive active duty before they can find their true loves in the town of Snowberry Creek, Washington…

Best friends Nick, Spence, and Leif are counting down the last days of their third deployment as members of the U.S. Army, and their first in Afghanistan. But when one of them receives heartbreaking news from home, their camaraderie will be tested both under fire and under the strain of nearly unbearable emotional pain.

Then, while on patrol in a dangerous sector, the strangest thing happens—a stray dog appears from nowhere, alerting them to a coming ambush, and saves their lives. And as the three soldiers struggle to rescue the pooch from the firefight, each of the friends finds a little lost piece of himself—and a part of themselves they need to carry home…

This book is critical as it sets up the entire premise to the series, as I found out reading the next book. Intriguing series.

Need to read before book 3

This book is actually vol. 2.5 actually a novella that tells how the guys got Mooch. It also gives more details about the relationship between the 3 guys, Calli and Mooch the dog.

Likable characters, kind of on the short side. Basically introducing the heroes for the main books in the series, but not much more.

"A Soldier's Heart" is a quick e-novella that kicks Alexis Morgan new Snowberry Creek series. I was about to start the first full-length novel "A Time for Home" when I decided that I would quickly check out the novella first. The story focuses on three soldiers (Spence, Lief, and Nick) stationed in Afghanistan who are nearing the end of their current deployment. As someone who hasn't read a lot of war books, I really appreciated the inside look at what it's like to be a modern day soldier. I've noticed with a lot of the romances(series) I've read there's always some element that makes the characters seem like their lives are already a little too good to be true, but I think this novella is going to really help ground these Snowberry characters closer to gritty reality. While I think it would be totally ok to read the series without reading the novella first - I think the novella will really help to make the series whole.

A short prequel, A Soldier's Heart introduces us to three friend serving in the US Army together. After already having served in Iraq, Nick, Spence and Leif are now facing the war on terror in Afghanistan.
During a foot patrol in a nearby city/village, a stray dog saves them from an ambush and is hit by enemy fire as a result. The friends work together to not only save the dog's life but try to find a way to bring the dog back stateside with them.

a nice set up for the series.

I haven't read from this author before so I'm glad I had this short story to give me an idea. I thought it wasn't too bad.

Just fyi, the book description in goodreads (above) is terrible so don't base it on whether you'd read this book or not. Its a quick read just read it to see if you think you'll like it lol.

Just a short setup to the first book in series. Cover all wrong since it takes place in Afghanistan.

I'm really glad I read this one before A Time for Home. Never having been in a war zone I have no idea how true to life this is but it sure felt real to me.

It would have been better as the first few chapters in the first novel, but it was nice to have the background.
