But when one of them receives heartbreaking news from home, their camaraderie will be tested both under fire and under the strain of nearly unbearable emotional pain.
Then, while on patrol in a dangerous sector, the strangest thing happens—a stray dog appears from nowhere, alerting them to a coming ambush, and saves their lives. "A Soldier's Heart" is a quick e-novella that kicks Alexis Morgan new Snowberry Creek series. I was about to start the first full-length novel "A Time for Home" when I decided that I would quickly check out the novella first. The story focuses on three soldiers (Spence, Lief, and Nick) stationed in Afghanistan who are nearing the end of their current deployment. As someone who hasn't read a lot of war books, I really appreciated the inside look at what it's like to be a modern day soldier. I've noticed with a lot of the romances(series) I've read there's always some element that makes the characters seem like their lives are already a little too good to be true, but I think this novella is going to really help ground these Snowberry characters closer to gritty reality. While I think it would be totally ok to read the series without reading the novella first - I think the novella will really help to make the series whole.
A short prequel, A Soldier's Heart introduces us to three friend serving in the US Army together. After already having served in Iraq, Nick, Spence and Leif are now facing the war on terror in Afghanistan. During a foot patrol in a nearby city/village, a stray dog saves them from an ambush and is hit by enemy fire as a result. The friends work together to not only save the dog's life but try to find a way to bring the dog back stateside with them.
I haven't read from this author before so I'm glad I had this short story to give me an idea. I thought it wasn't too bad.
Just fyi, the book description in goodreads (above) is terrible so don't base it on whether you'd read this book or not. Its a quick read just read it to see if you think you'll like it lol.
I'm really glad I read this one before A Time for Home. Never having been in a war zone I have no idea how true to life this is but it sure felt real to me.
