About the author

Tiziano Sclavi is an Italian comic book and novel writer, who has also worked as a journalist. Sclavi is most famous for creating the Italian bestselling comic Dylan Dog, started in 1986 and still ongoing, a horror pastiche featuring a paranormal investigator. More than 450 monthly 90-pages long issues have appeared in the series, with Sclavi as the most recurrent script writer in the first decade of serialisation.

Questo è un altro esempio della capacità di Sclavi di sfruttare il disegno come mezzo narrativo. C'è un dettaglio, un piccolissimo dettaglio puramente descrittivo, che però racchiude in sé l'intera storia. E ciononostante, anche per chi lo coglie, la storia riesce lo stesso a sorprendere.

In più, con questo volume Sclavi ci mostra un'altra sua capacità narrativa estremamente difficile da realizzare: riuscire a mantenere nello stesso testo, senza farli cozzare, grottesco e tragico. Seppur gli italiani non abbiano i mezzi degli americani, la loro produzione seriale è di alta qualità ed estremamente piacevole. Un'ora di relax è assicurata.

A classic story with a few predictable but not dishonourable twists.
Sclavi also uses one of his classic themes – the ordinary lives of so-called "monsters", sometimes so close to our own – and adds a touch of humour to this ultimately tragic love story.

Старая знакомая Дилана Дога обращается к нему за помощью, поскольку из-за странного повреждения мужа подозревает, что его заменил двойник.
Печально, что немного нащупав собственный стиль серия сделала два шага назад, вернувшись к удобным банальностям, на этот раз к вампирам, причём в каком-то уж совсем архаичном формате нравоучительных агиток пятидесятых про опасности наркомании.
Герой умудряется выставить себя настолько плохим детективом, что убийце приходится самому с собой разбираться, зато при первой же встрече, не раздумывая прыгает в кровать к подозрительной ассистентке одной из жертв через сутки после его смерти.
По тематике Склави совершенно нечего предложить кроме набора штампов, а мелодраматический элемент, как и заботливо приготовленный твист не работают, поскольку сама история не только выстроена чересчур по-идиотски, но ещё и во многом повторяет формой более качественный седьмой выпуск.

In de moderne maatschappij van vandaag is het geloof in vampieren verdwenen. Maar als ze nog steeds onder ons zijn, hoe weet je dan wie je vriend is en wie het op je bloed gemunt heeft?
Dit is wat Dylan Dog meemaakt als een vriendin hem vraagt haar te helpen. Haar man lijkt niet meer haar man te zijn volgens haar. Kleine aanwijzingen doen haar dit geloven. Maar wanneer Dylan zijn vriend bezoekt bekend hij aan Dylan dat ze problemen heeft en het niet goed gaat met haar. Ondertussen vraagt Bloch, vriend en ex-collega bij Scotland Yard, zijn hulp in de aanhoudende doden die ze vinden op de straten van Londen.
Dan sterft Dylan zijn vriend op een ongebruikelijke manier en met een niet verwachte onthulling. Maar dit is niet het enige dat Dylan niet verwacht heeft, in dit misschien wat voorspelbaar verhaal dat toch heel goed geschreven was.

Classico. Visivo. Vampiresco.

A high society in London has a meeting, and most people seem to wear masks on top of incredibly ugly and mutated faces. Dylan gets contacted by an old friend, Cindy, that her husband Derek is behaving strangely. Dylan is suspicious and instead of spying on Derek, he tells her about Cindy's suspicions, which Derek mirrors back at him, telling him he's fine but Cindy has been a lot on her mind lately and maybe it is the stress talking. Dylan gets even more suspicious, and when a person goes missing close to their district, he starts investigating Derek. When Derek is put under pressure, he confesses to having killed the missing person, because he thinks he has transformed into a vampire, and was hiding it from Cindy. When Dylan still tries to figure out what is going on, Derek impaled himself with a stake and dies. This confirms he was not a vampire, but Dylan is confused. On his funeral he meets Carol, Derek and Cindy's daughter. After some more investigations, Dylan realizes Derek was never a vampire, but Cindy was, and Derek was just trying to protect his wife and was feeding her without her noticing. When Dylan confronts Cindy on the cemetery, she fights him and Dylan gains the upper hand, reuniting her with her husband.
Six months later, Dylan has a relationship with Carol who, unbeknownst to him, is part of the secret society of monsters we saw in the beginning of the story...

A rather weird story, in my opinion, somehow based on this idea that vampires are everywhere in our society, but undetectable to humans. I liked the idea behind it, but the execution not so much. What are the mysterious beings? Should they be the real old vampires in the society? Why is Carol one of them? What is their connection to the story of Cindy and Derek? Some parts of the story were quite cool, and the reader really is led to believe that Derek is the antagonist for a long time, with a good plot twist in the end... but this parallel story just makes little sense.. A wasted occasion.

Naslovnica koja pokazuje Dylana sa spuštenim pištoljem u pozadini kako gleda vampira koji urliče najbolje opisuje ovu epizodu, nije Dylan nositelj radnje, već promatrač drame koja se dešava među vampirima. Hm, na kraju mi je naslovnica najbolji dio stripa, neodvojiv od ostatka.
