Alyssa feels drawn to him, but how can she trust anyone after everything she's been through? Cole's sure his heart is closed off to love, but Alyssa and her children seem to have found a way in. As the killer draws closer, Alyssa realizes she's trusting Cole with more than her safety.
SUSAN SLEEMAN is the bestselling author of over sixty romantic suspense and mystery novels with more than two million books sold. She writes romantic suspense novels that are clean with inspiring messages of faith. Readers love her series for the well-drawn characters and edge-of-your-seat action. She graduated from the FBI and local police citizen academies, so her research is spot-on and her characters are real.
In addition to writing, Susan also hosts The Suspense Zone. She has lived in nine states but now calls Oregon home. Her husband is a retired church music director, and they have two beautiful daughters, two special sons-in-law, and four amazing grandsons
Heart-in-throat, fingers-trembling-while-turning-pages good. I've fallen in love with Susan Sleeman's writing all over again. The opening scene took my breath away and I had a hard time keeping my oxygen levels up for the rest of the read. Danger and action expertly paired with romance -- the decadently toe-curling kind. If I wasn't lightheaded from the taut suspense, I was swooning over Cole! (Experiencing heart-palpitations just remember some of those scenes. Happy sigh,)
This is the third book in The Justice Agency series though it can be read as a standalone. I absolutely love this patchwork family -- five adopted siblings who have all served in law enforcement but have banded together to create their own PI agency, each bringing very unique skills to the group. The sibling banter is sublime, as is their tender "I'm telling you this because I love you" moments. One of my favourite fictional families. Right up there with Dee Henderson's O'Malleys.
I love Susan Sleeman's books! Inspirational suspense at its very finest. This third book in her Justice Agency series features Cole Justice, who has carried around a huge burden since his friend was killed during their tour in Iraq. He also carries a second burden. Alyssa's police officer husband was killed two years ago, leaving her alone with 7 year old twins. Alyssa overhears something sinister on a run and now the killers are after her. Can the Justices keep her safe? Will she and Cole both trust God during their times of deepest need?
Sleeman does a masterful job at ratcheting up the suspense in her books, more with each chapter. It leaves the reader breathless, as does her unique ability to craft characters that seemingly jump off the page! Her plots and scenery are all done perfectly. Now I must read the last two in the series, the story of Dani and Derrick Justice. I can't wait!
*I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions stated here are honest and my own.
While out running Alyssa Wells stumbles across a clandestine meeting between police officers that her husband worked with before he died. What she hears shocks her. Knowing she cannot let the men know that she has heard them Alyssa tries to escape quietly. Unfortunately she falls and alerts the men to her presence. Rushing to escape and hoping that they do not know who heard them Alyssa encounters Cole Justice. Cole and his siblings own a private investigator business and Cole agrees to help Alyssa bring the men to justice and hopefully prove that her husband was not a part of the drug ring that the officers belong to. Cole and Alyssa are attracted to each other but both carry baggage. Alyssa thinks she can never trust another man in her life and Cole has demons chasing him from his time in Iraq. Alyssa has put her trust in God to help her through her situation but Cole has lost his trust in God and feels he can only trust in himself to keep the people he cares for safe. As a killer begins to make threats to Alyssa and those closest to her, Cole is determined to keep her safe, but will his efforts be enough?
NO WAY OUT was a great suspense and held my interest throughout. Even though we knew who the main "bad guys" were from the beginning of the story that didn't take away from the suspense of how the story unfolded. I liked both Cole and Alyssa's characters. Even though Cole had demons from his past experience in Iraq he felt his heart thawing when Alyssa and her twins came into his life. Slowly but surely Alyssa was able to once again put her trust in a man and allow him to care for her and her children. Her faith was a great example to Cole and rang true throughout the entire story. I enjoyed this book so much that I went to Amazon and ordered two other books in the Justice Agency series. I'm looking forward to reading them as I love a romantic suspense story!
Have you ever felt boxed in by circumstances? Where do you turn? How do you find your way out? What if you have overheard something that you were not intended to hear and suddenly your life is in danger? Alyssa was in that kind of situation. For her, the danger was tripled because it could affect her twins as well. Just as unexpected as what she heard was the sudden appearance of Cole Justice at her favorite spot on the beach. Could she trust him? She had never seen him before but meeting his sister Dani after he helped her to safety made it possible for her to relax just a little. The intense excitement, suspense, potential romance, and even a few terror-filled moments kept me reading to see if they would find a way out alive. Alyssa had lost her husband a couple of years earlier and learned some things about him that she never suspected, so trusting another man to even help her during a difficult time was almost impossible for her. Relying on her strong faith in God kept her going in the worst of conditions. I especially enjoyed her resiliency as she seemed to bounce back up every time something bad knocked her down. I look forward to the opportunity to read more books by this author.
This is book three in The Justice Agency series, It is a stand alone book, however they are all amazing. They do go in order and you will miss some of the history of some of the characters if you jump in the middle but nothing that is necessary to understand what is going on in this novel.
I love the suspense, romance, heartache, dialogue, and so much more that are always present in one of Sleeman's books.
The Justice Agency series all revolve around an amazing family, the Justice family. This book focuses on Cole Justice. He has had a lot to deal with in his past and must come to grips with his past if he is to have a chance at happiness. When Cole must protect Alyssa and her kids will his past help him to succeed or be his undoing?
Alyssa Wells is a determined mother of a set of twins. When she is in the wrong place at the wrong time will she loose her family? Alyssa must learn to trust a man she just met and uncover a past that may or may not end as she hopes.
Wow! I liked Cole Justice’s story allot because he has overcome so much and thankfully realized what he’d be missing out on a blessing before it was to late.
Alyssa accidentally over heard someone, she thought she trusted, her husbands partner say he had killed him and now she’s running for her life. In her flight for life she comes across Cole Justice, who happens to be out in storm fighting his own troubles, thankfully helps her out and she feels drawn to him even though she doesn’t know him.
Cole recognizes right away that it’s a woman running from something or someone from his spot high on a rock by the ocean and she’s heading straight toward him. Hopefully she doesn’t freak out when she gets up on to the rock and sees him and give both of them away. He doesn’t like the feelings that this stranger awakens in him and the dreams that he thought he’d given up on long time ago. Can these two learn to let go of the past and to survive the present to have a future?
The book starts out with Alyssa Wells taking an afternoon run. On a lower path she could hear a conversation that stopped her in her tracks. Both officers had worked with her husband before he died. Now Alyssa just found out both are dirty cops. She tried to be quiet but ended up falling down and making a lot of noise. At that point, she took off running for her life.
The book was intense, with a lot of heart pounding moments. I loved Cole Justice and his family. They banded around Alyssa and her twins. Talk about meeting someone at the perfect time. I’ll give too much away if I tell you how they met. Just read, and I’m sure you will agree.
Excellent book that had it all, Action, suspense, and romance. This is not the book to start reading right before bed. It’s very hard to put down after that first page.
The Justice Agency Series is a very good series to read. Just finished up reading book #3 in this series NO WAY OUT by: Susan Sleeman. The way the story unfolds give you food for thought the way two people with shattered lives with betrale from a Husband and a death from a friend in Iraq put an Ex Soldier and U.S. Marshall in a tail spin that has him feeling guilty about the one being alive; this story will show you what God has planed for them and he guides them to each other.
This is the first book I have read by Susan Sleeman, and I loved it. I plan on reading more of her books in the future, so I will be looking for some to add to my to be read pile. This book was full of surprises, but always interesting to read. I love the characters, and the way they interact with each other. I could have read it in one day, if I didn't have any interruptions; however, reading it a bit slower made the enjoyment last a bit longer.
this is an ebook from the library and so I didn't read the Justice Agency series in order. This is Cole's and Alyssa's story. The Justice siblings being Law Enforcement workers. Small town with murder mystery and drug problem and not knowing who to trust as the law seemed to look good but...? So on to finding another of Susan's books
Alissa climbs the rocks next to the ocean to get away from some dirty cops she overheard had killed her husband. Cole was on the same rocks contemplating life. He helps to protect Alissa and her twins and finds out the truth about who did kill her husband. The leader of the drug ring is a surprise twist to the story.
I love the journey Susan takes her characters on. Her commitment to restoration and solving the mystery. Be prepared for an unexpected solution to the discovering who the bad guy really is.
The Justice Agency series will just grab your attention. The story lines of each book will just pull you in. The characters are so well develop its like you are reading about real people. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Cole and Alyssa were both dealing with hurts from the past. Upon their off chance meeting they were thrown into getting to know each other very quickly and trusting each other was hard for both of them. Read and watch as they fall in love.
This was another great book by a fine author. I really enjoy this author's books. She always includes plenty of mystery, intrique, romance and faith in God
Today was a good day and a bad day to read this story. (April 15, 2013) Susan wrote the book with "Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." Because with trials the only peace is through God. The bad part was it had a explosion in it. A little to vivid in my mind today.
The plot is simple with some twists to it that were unexpected in some ways. I really like the characters. I liked how Alyssa was turning to prayer and relying on God. She still had to deal with her problems and her reactions were real. It was preaching but sharing what helped her get through her trials.
Alyssa has been a widow for two years now. She has twins Brianna and Riley in first grade. Her husband was a cop and drug dealer or so everyone thought. Alyssa went back to work selling real estate and were living rent free in a duplex that her husband's partner Nolan owned.
Alyssa was running at night after work and she heard Nolan and two others below the path she was on talking about her husband's death and framing him as a drug dealer. She knows that at least 2 of 3 men were cops. She made a sound and they started up the hill after her. While hiding from them in her secret spot she found someone already their. He owns a gun. Cole Justice private investigator.
Cole believed her that someone was chasing her and her life was in danger. He got her back to his house that he was renting and Dani his sister a P.I. also was their. They made a plan to keep her safe.
Cole served two tours in Iraq and that has changed him a lot. He wants to keep everyone safe and thinks he has to be in control. Cole blames himself for his friend dying and his survival. He has not had a lot to be happy about.
This has lots of action, drama and lots of bad guys with lots of power, but also some good guys and girls who are willing to protect others who can't protect themselves and do the right thing. This is a clean read. Good reminder to turn things over to the Lord and ask for help.
I was given this book by the author Susan Sleeman and asked to give honest review of it when finished. Publisher: Love Inspired (May 7, 2013) Harlequin 224 pages ISBN-10: 0373445393
No Way Out by Susan Sleeman - A Book Review “We can’t control things around us. Not a single one of us can. God is in charge.” Who could not benefit from this reminder from Dani Justice? Most of us have struggled with guilt about things that happened that were in actuality out of our control. Susan Sleeman tells a tale filled with suspense and surprises that not only entertains, but also illustrates the damage we can do to ourselves and our relationships when we allow pseudo guilt, the guilt we feel even when we were not responsible or when sin was not involved in an undesired outcome or tragedy. (For more on this you may want to read Total Forgiveness by R.T. Kendall.) Readers are reminded of the perfect peace that is available to us through trusting in the Lord and accepting His sovereignty. I will confess to being a bit of a book snob. When I first received No Way Out as part of a prize package from a Christian fiction scavenger hunt, it was not among my first reads of the thirty books that arrived in the mail. Why? The size and the shape, what if I took it to the doctor’s office waiting room? Why, someone might mistakenly think I was reading a Harlequin romance! Such reasoning will never again stop me from enjoying a truly Love Inspired story. Thanks to the scavenger hunt I am now a Susan Sleeman fan, and look forward to reading more of her books. I am very grateful that I just won a second of Susan’s books, Thread of Suspicion, and can’t wait to continue the saga of the Justice Agency.
What elements of Susan’s writing made this book such an enjoyable read aside from the valuable message? Susan had a way of placing me in a setting, engaging all of my senses, without lengthy descriptions that cause my attention to waver. My emotions were engaged with the characters of the story: fear, hope, disappointment, new love, doubt, relief. The story was a roller coaster of emotions with frequent bends and curves caused by unexpected plot twists. Surprises were still to come even in the final chapter. The story had a mix of easily anticipated events to make prior knowledge of the genre provide a comfortable read and of unanticipated events to maintain a high level of engagement with the story. A nice read indeed.
This is only the second Harlequin romance I've ever read. The other, along with a science fiction novel, were research. Therefore, if I review this as if it were mainstream fiction rather than as fan of romance novels, you must factor that in.
That being said, I would like for the romance to have unfolded slowly, while keeping the quick pace of the action.
The romance: Alyssa and Cole fell head-over-heels from the first sighting, In the midst of life or death circumstances. They spend the rest of the novel discussing, in internal dialogue, their individual baggage, and trying to convince themselves they MUST not do what they've already done, which is fall in love.
The story:
Alyssa Wells, widowed mother of two, is in the wrong place at the right time, when she overhears a conversation that may lead to her husband's killer.
Cole Justice, a troubled veteran, is in the right place at the wrong time, and rescues Alyssa, as she's being chased by the men she heard discussing her husband's death.
Together, Alyssa, Cole, and Cole's assorted siblings seek to protect Alyssa and her twins while pursuing the suspected killer, and clearing Alyssa's deceased husband's name.
The craft:
The author did her research well. The detective work, the technical descriptions, references to police procedure is well written. There are no spare words, this novel races from beginning to end and keeps the excitement building.
The character's faith is in evidence, and quite realistically portrayed. She acts as a person of faith (in any religion) would act, with silent conversation with her Diety during times of thanksgiving and times of trouble. The author proves that it is impossible for anyone to forbid prayer in any setting, as the character's prayer is silent by necessity of her circumstances, and yet is as strong as the most shouted prayer in public places.
If this were a mainstream novel, I would give it 3 stars. In the genre in which it was written, I give it 4 stars. I give author, Susan Sleeman, as many stars as she would like, because her work is excellent.
Title: NO WAY OUT Author: Susan Sleeman Publisher: Love Inspired Suspense May 2013 ISBN: 978-0373445394 Genre: Romantic suspense
Who can she trust?
Alyssa Wells has uncovered evidence that her police officer husband was murdered by his partner—a dangerous claim in a small town. After two tours in Iraq, protecting Alyssa and her children shouldn't be a problem for private investigator Cole Justice.
Alyssa feels drawn to him, but how can she trust anyone after everything she's been through? Cole's sure his heart is closed off to love, but Alyssa and her children seem to have found a way in. As the killer draws closer, Alyssa realizes she's trusting Cole with more than her safety.
NO WAY OUT is the third book in Ms. Sleeman’s The Justice Agency series. It easily stands alone, but readers will want to read Double Exposure and Dead Wrong first as they are about members of the same family and you’ll want to know about the details of their relationships.
NO WAY OUT is spell-binding. It caught my attention from page one and held it all the way to the end of the book. There are some twists and turns that I didn’t expect, but other things I did expect—such as the ending almost seemed to wrap up too quickly—I should’ve known Ms. Sleeman’s writing better than that. She had another twist coming that I didn’t expect.
If you like romantic suspense, NO WAY OUT is a book that you won’t want to miss. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book. $5.99. 224 pages. 5 stars
What a great combo of romantic and dramatic suspense! Alyssa Wells and Cole Justice have a chance meeting . .. . on a ledge . . . overlooking the ocean . . . ..on a dark, stormy night. Cole was running from events in his past; Alyssa was running (literally) from events that would prevent her from living another day of her future. Divine providence teams them up to solve what starts out as a local mystery, with tentacles reaching out to include many other unsolved cases that were the trademark of a heinous drug dealer and serial killer.
Fairly recently widowed, Alyssa is tentative to trust another man, especially one with military and law enforcement background; her husband having been a cop, whose daily rub with danger turned him into an angry and eventually abusive man. Cole, on the other hand, daily bears the burden of heavy guilt, over the fellow soldier that he could not protect and the fiance who could not commit. Using the combined skills of the Justice Agency, (a private investigative group comprised of the Justice siblings) Cole ultimately brings Alyssa's nemesis to justice and they both settle the issues of their own hearts.
Sleeman has put together a fast-paced story line with several unexpected twists and turns, leaving readers like me, only wishing the book was twice as long. If you want to read more Justice Agency stories visit http://www.susansleeman.com/books/by-....
Alyssa Wells has uncovered evidence that her police officer husband was murdered by his partner. That’s a dangerous claim to make in a small town. She had not suspected it was even possible until she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and overheard a conversation between three men. After two tours in Iraq, protecting Alyssa and her children shouldn’t be a problem for private investigator Cole Justice. Alyssa’s is very doubtful of her ability to judge whether someone can be trusted or not. Is Cole one of the good guys? Will Cole and Alyssa be able to safely navigate the danger to their hearts as well as from the killer after Alyssa?
Susan Sleeman has crafted another great suspense story. From the very beginning my attention was grabbed. Her development of Alyssa was very thorough. It is amazing to me that this character is so different from those in the previous books from this series. I had been introduced to Cole in the previous books and had gotten a peek at his past. I loved how the details of his story were revealed in this book.
The plot was intricately built and very believable. When danger arrived it got my heart rate to speed up and made me ignore my family until the characters were out of danger once again. There were some very nice surprise twists in the plot that really kept me guessing.
No Way Out by Susan Sleeman grabbed me on the first page. I was riveted to the story of Alyssa Wells and Cole Justice. Alyssa is a widow with two young children and on a run one night overhears her dead husband’s police partner admit to being part of a meth ring and killing her husband. As she hurries away, she slips and the bad guys are after her.
After two tours in Iraq, Cole Justice is back in the states working as a private investigator. He’s out on the beach the night Alyssa runs for her life. He helps her to hide and then begins to protect her and the children while investigating.
I loved the characters in this book. Cole’s family is great at working together and loving each other. Alyssa’s children are adorable and believable. Cole and Alyssa face many obstacles in a short time and learn to rely on each other.
I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this story. It’s fast pace and emotional, and the characters seem real.
I can’t remember how I met Susan Sleeman online, but she gave me a pre-publication advance copy of her book to review before it was for sale in stores. I’m under no obligation to review it and say nice things about it.
