Endless Knight picks up directly where Poison Princess left off—Evie completing her first kill by taking out Arthur, the Alchemist, with Jack, Selena, Finn, and Matthew there to witness her in all her Red Witch glory. But Arthur is only one foe down, there are many, many more of them. And getting the heck out of Requiem, Tennessee and getting to her grandmother has become priority number one. But, as most things in Evie's life are, it won't be easy. Militia, cannibals, slavers, bagmen—not to mention the other Arcana—all stand in her way.

Only the strongest will survive this game and Evie has grown so much. No longer afraid of her powers, she is still wary of them. Wary of the feelings and desires they stir up in her. Forced to play a game she never wanted part in, she tries to find her own way. Make new rules. I was so proud of her throughout. Gone is the fumbling, bumbling rich girl and, in her place, is a woman who has become a force to be reckoned with. A leader finding her voice. A girl who may not need Jack to survive as much as she used to think, but who still very much wants him by her side.

Jack. Oh, Jack. I am still a ragin' for that Cajun. He is all sorts of angry and confused. Full of pent up and barely restrained emotions. And the things we thought were true, that we thought we knew about him... Most aren’t close at all. There is so much more to him revealed in this story. We also get to see a different side of him, since Evie no longer needs him like she used to—now that she’s all Frau Badass in her own right. It all added up to me loving him even more than I already did.

Which only made me a confused mess once Death entered the scene. Death is… Well, only this Death could have you begging for his sweet kiss. Complicated? Misunderstood? He is that and much, much more. I don’t want to give anything about his character away, so I’ll just say this: I didn’t believe another could rival my love for Jackson but Death, he gives it a good go. The chemistry between Death and Evie rivals that of Jackson and Evie, which I honestly did not think was possible. Whichever one Evie doesn’t want, I’ll be more than happy to take!

Endless Knight has an unrelenting, non-stop pace so full of action and drama that I literally could not stop reading. Never have I ever read a book so masterfully crafted. Kresley Cole is pure genius. The world she has created is brilliant—so well thought out, so detailed and life like, the words flow like a movie in your head. And the characters? Evie, Jack, Death, Matthew, Selena—each are unique and well-developed and, truthfully, downright awesome. Their powers, their strengths and weakness… a lot is revealed about them. And, by the end of Endless Knight, only six out of the twenty two Major Arcana cards are not yet revealed. This cast is growing into something incredibly awesome with each addition. Bring on the next book! I cannot wait for more Evie, Jack, Death, and the rest of the gang.

After my reread of Poison Princess, I kept track of which cards we've met. Names next to them if they appeared in the books. Cards that show up in Endless Knight are in BOLD. Deceased only applies to Poison Princess, not spoiling Endless Knight! I'll paste it below. :-)

WOULD YOU LOOK AT THE smexy drop-dead gorgeous COVER.
I can't. Is that Death there holding Evie? I'm sorry but I've had a thing for him since Poison Princess okay? Okay. I have a feeling that Jack is the Judgement card. Because when Jack rescued Evie from the redneck militia, he looked very angry and she said something like "his face promised pain and judgement." Anyhoo, Please excusez-moi while I go on a hiatus. Wake me up when september ends.

Re-read and updated review.

So I'm not sure where I want to start..........ummm...... Alright so I guess I'll just start by saying I have no idea how I feel about this book. First of all, I was shocked to the core, I always guessed there was more to the death and empress charade but what was revealed was way beyond what I had hoped for.
It's so nice to think you can sorta predict what will happen, then you are way way way off. I mean this is probably the only area in life where being absolutely wrong is a good thing.

The ideas were riveting, and brilliant. But what left me conflicted was the pace of the story, and the unclear ending. I know that there's a third installment, but I'm not so sure how I feel about it either. I admit though that I didn't think the story would drag on so much. In the first installment of this series I was enthralled by every page of the book, but in endless knight I found myself bored in some points of the story, and emotionally turmoiled in other parts. I lost interest in Evie and jack being together as soon as I was confronted with the idea of her and death. I'm always a fan of love hate turmoils, and honestly the bad boy attitude is probably way more enticing when you're immortal and lethal to the touch (the eyes too though). But then again I'm just a sucker for brooding, moody, and conflicted characters. Something about the endless knights character spun a web of chains that surrounds you and entangles you slowly. And I guess patience is key when you are waiting for the characters to break down each others walls of steel with toothpicks.

To be honest, Jacks bad boy parade started to lose its gleam in endless knight, and when things started to get serious I found that I wasn't in love with their relationship. The love triangle spiced things up, and made a turning point for the story to pick up pace and made it way more interesting. But the ending grounded my nerves into dust. I guess the book begins to actually pick up pace approximately 50 pages to it's ending. I love a book that gives you the perfect cliff hanger, and that definitely gets points for being one of the best cliffhangers thus far in my reading experience. I mean I honestly felt a sudden urge to fly to America and ran sack the authors house for the third installment. Thank goodness for visa limitations. I seriously couldn't tell wether Evie was ok with it all, or wether she was going to go all empress on death. Guess I can't judge until we're in the third story! But as an overall I loved the unique ideas that create the amazing series, and I definitely will be looking forward to the third installment.

“Or maybe I was learning that nothing was black and white.”

Story ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Finally embracing her own powers Evie goes on a hunt for allies to kill Death.
But sometimes the bad guys are not your enemy and your friends keep secrets from you.
In the sequel Evie is finally a likable character, her powers are awesome and the way she tries to save so many makes her in some way a “good” character.
The book wasn’t the best book I’ve read, but it was good in some way. The whole idea with the tarot cards was awesome, but the execution itself was only okay.
It could’ve been better. Definitely.
But I enjoyed the story till the last 10% when Evie started to make dumb choices. Now I’m pretty sure I won’t continue the series. I only can take so much of a love triangle. But stretching this whole series into more than three books is really exhausting for me.
I’m glad some of you enjoyed it, that’s awesome guys. But in the end this whole series just wasn’t for me.

Characters ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Even though the characters improved a bit (Evie finally got a little more badass) it was still really annoying to see that I didn’t get more involved with the characters. In the end I was interested in the outcome of some of them, but not so much that I could ignore the problems I had with the whole series.
It’s still a book filled with a lot of cliches - beginning with the look and the personalities of some characters.
They all look beautiful in their own way and some way Evie is even more perfect than others. She’s beautiful, intelligent, she can dance ballet but is also good at games that need your intelligence. She’s weak, but she’s also strong. I liked Evie, at least a bit, but her confusing and every time changing thoughts made her a little bit annoying.
A new character was introduced, that made the whole story so much more interesting - death aka Aric. Next to Jack he was the perfect match for Evie. I won’t spoil anything about him, but in the end I liked him more than I liked Jack (I hated Jack in the first book, the second book changed that only a little bit).
But you know who was still my absolute favorite character? Matthew aka the fool. He’s cute, super confusing and can see your future.
I know, that sounds awful or at least not that great but I always liked him more than the other characters. He just had something interesting about him.

World ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Every century a catastrophe rumbles the earth and a game of twenty four tarot cards begins. They play for life, for immortality.
With each card they erase they win more power and their chance to win the final price rises.
Every card - every character - owns magical powers that makes them powerful, and with that, dangerous.
But life is different after the flash - humans fight each other and their humanity. Nearly all that is left are zombies and cannibals.

Relationships ⭐️⭐️⭐️
When I started this series I thought: finally, a series without a love triangle.
But guys, I was so wrong.
Of course many authors think love triangles make their story more interesting, more captivating. But even if this is true, when you start to become member of a “team” you’ll get angry when the girl (or boy) doesn’t end up with your chosen one.
And that’s what happened here.
I liked that next to the physical attraction Evie felt for some male characters, she started to understand that there is more than just the physical attraction to someone.
But when I finally thought she got a little bit smarter, she backtracked and jumped back to her illogical stupid choice.
Sorry not sorry.
I’m always here for respectful, handsome and kind characters, not boys that are so damn cocky I’m getting angry.
But, when we’re looking at it the realistic way, in our world there are boys that have this personality and girls that love this attributes in men. So, I’m not gonna judge.
It’s always your own choice guys! Never get influenced by someone’s opinion.
If you like these kind of guys - go for them!
But always remember that boys should treat you with respect and care for you.
In the end that is what love means.
Respecting and caring for each other.

Writing style ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Reading the sequel to the first book I realized that this author specializes on the actions of the book. That means that there aren’t beautiful phrases, or dialogues that makes you swoon. Sometimes there aren’t even detailed descriptions of places or things.
All in all it’s okay, but not worth more than three stars. Even though it was really funny sometimes!

(Below is my initial reaction to cover)

So I am done with Endless Knight, sequel to Poison Princess. What do I think of it?

I don't know what happened. Poison Princess was amazing. Absolutely awesome in every single way. Incredible to the point where I actually compared Kresely Cole to the Pope on my blog (http://rattlethestars.com/2013/10/01/...). And for a homegrown Irish Catholic girl, that's a big deal yo. So this book's epic fail is just a knife twisting deeper and deeper into my soul.

The thing that is also extremely frustrating about this book, is that I can actually and acutely describe exactly what was wrong with this book and why it was such a failure compared to PP.

1.) Where's the sass, Evie? You were this smart mouthed, no-shit taking girl that popped off quips that made me bust out laughing. The book had none of the snarky humor that Poison did. Sure, there were some brief comical lines, but nothing like the constant barrage of hilarious lines Cole popped out of her character's mouths constantly in PP. That's one thing I enjoyed most about reading book one. I wanted so, so, so much more from book two.

2.) Where the HELL is the action? Sure sure every once in awhile we get the badass fights and ONCE we got a steamy scene, but besides a glimmer of wam bams here and there, this book was incredibly boring. PP wasn't brimming with constant action, it did have some conversation parts, but those were filled with the smexy Jackson and the delicious build up between Evie and him. When nothing is happening in this book, literally NOTHING is happening. Evie, with the loss of her quick witted quotes, is not a strong enough character to tell a story. And those she ends up talking to and stuck with, are not interesting or developed enough to take the lame about of the non-action scenes. *wipes tear away*

3.) God effing dammit Cole. A love triangle? Are you serious? Touche with the twisty twists you threw in there to make it a tich more understandable, but *sigh*

You just haaaad to bring the YA cliche into your book huh? And not only did you ignite the three pointed romance of annoying fire, you topped it off with dragging out BOTH romances, giving them both obvious failures, making us practically HATE them both for different reasons. So not cool, sister. And with that threesome, you didn't even top it off with any real, sexy, god I need some time to myself scenes.

This is another typical YA second book fail. I hope and pray that Cole can really create a better plot in the next book. But unfortunately, this series has now been bumped from my "need to read to breath" shelf to "I'll put it on my list I guess" level.

Spoilers

I really liked it, but I also didn't. It was all so nonsensical yet somehow it managed to be rather entertaining.

-The plot was essentially just a bunch of good-looking-angsty-teenagers-with-powers running around, fighting, and hiding from: 1. Other good-looking-angsty-teenagers-with-powers 2. Weird-zombie-like-creatures-called-Bagmen 3. Creepy-hypnotized-cannibals and 4. Rapey-militia-men-whose-leaders-consisted-of-two-teenage-perverts. Yea… so it was all a load of teenage angsting and nonsense, with the odd threat thrown in.

-The worldbuilding was as weird as ever. The flash was meant to have destroyed animals/plants/buildings/water yet buildings, bridges, rivers, and animals popped up whenever it suited the story. What the hell was the flash anyway? Was it a solar flare or something? Why was it always night? Why did the sun disappear? And how the hell did the flash create zombie like creatures?

-WTF was the point of the whole Arcana game? Why did the gods have champions? Why did they make them fight? How did it start? What's its purpose? Where have the gods gone? Why do the same 22 kids have to fight to the death after a post apocalyptic event?

-I HATED Jackson. How dare he bitch about Evie lying to him when he'd done nothing but lie to her! At least Evie was eventually honest, but Jackson carried on lying, he didn't respect her enough to tell the truth even when she asked him if he was keeping anything from her.
The fucker lied to her about why he was initially interested in her and then the bastard lied to her about how her mum died — yea, he killed her. The wanker.
Ugh, I have no doubt that Evie will let Jackson off the hook after he gives an half-arsed, insincere apology and twists things to make himself look like the bwave-compassionate-guy who killed her mum so she'd be free from pain. Ugh. What kind of girl would want to be with the guy that 1. Killed her mum and then lied about it and 2. Only wanted her to begin with because she was dating his much-hated-secret-half-brother?
Yea, I bet Evie will forgive and forget as soon as she sees him, heroines aren't allowed to be bitter or angry, they have to be understanding and forgiving even with their mum's murderer… Whereas heroes can have hissy fits, bitch, moan and berate to their heart's content. Ugh.

-If Jackson really loved Evie he wouldn't have constantly left her and punished her over things she had no control of.

-More Jack ranting: Ugh, he took the piss so much. He killed Evie's mother and lied about it, yet he had the audacity to be mad at her for not telling him every little thing about herself. What kind of hypocritical loser would lecture the girl they supposedly loved about honesty when they'd just killed said girl's mother and then lied about it for months?! How could Jackson be so righteous and punish Evie about lying when he killed her mother and lied about it?! Who the fuck does that?
He betrayed Evie way worse than she did him. He let her unknowingly be in a relationship with her mother's killer, and he let her believe her mum died naturally. How dare he get all high and mighty about the truth when he did nothing but lie himself?! What he did was unforgivable… But in YA land Evie will excuse his lies, hypocrisy, and murdering ways instantly and she'll be swooning for him in no time. Ugh.

-Evie… I liked her but I also didn't like her. She was fun, ditzy, and didn't whine too much. But I hated how she let Jack keep treating her like shit, he accused her of all sorts and acted disgusted with her… But doormat Evie kept begging for scraps of attention. Their relationship was so one sided, Evie had to do all the work even when he should have been the one proving himself to her. She was so weak, lame and pathetic when it came to all things Jack.

-Jackson excused his cold behaviour by saying he wasn't perfect and couldn't get everything right the first time — yet Evie wasn't allowed to make any mistakes, she had to be perfect, she had to get things right straight away, she couldn't do anything slightly questionable… Whereas Jack could do as many wrongs as he pleased and get away with it. Ugh, the double standards were fucking annoying.

-Jack's obsession with Evie's arse was disturbing.

-I think Jack will end up being the dormant Arcana. Or maybe Mel.

-I kind of loved Death. He had WAY more chemistry with Evie than Jackson did. Their banter, history and relationship made Evie/Jack look lame. The time Evie/Death spent together at his castle was far more entertaining than when she was with Jack, Matthew and co. It was quite funny how Evie tried to seduce Death, and tried to get him to open up… Whilst Death tried his best to resist her charms. Their push/pull relationship was really entertaining.
I loved how Death kept calling Evie 'creature' — for some reason I found it cute. I really want Evie to end up with Death, that way she can live with him in his lair and they can both brood and be beautiful together.

-For once the love triangle made sense. Jack liked Evie because she was his opposite (soft-hearted and girly), also because they both shared a past before the apocalypse. And Death wanted Evie because she was the only girl he could touch without killing and because they had an epic history. Yea, I don't mind love triangles when they make sense.

-Not surprisingly, the heroine didn't get along with the two female secondary characters. She thought Selena was a ruthless bitch, and she hated Lark because she betrayed her. I hope Evie becomes proper friends with both of them. Oh and Selena better not be dead.

-Ugh, I bet Evie won't end up having sex with Death. They'll either get disturbed or she'll end up realising she still has feelings for Jack or Death won't be able to go through with sexing her up because she wants Jack or some BS. Heaven forbid a YA heroine having sex with more than one guy in her lifetime. Only heroes are allowed to have had a sex life outside the heroine. Ugh.

-The side characters were great. I loved Finn, Selena, Matthew and Lark, they all had cool powers and decent personalities.

-There were some scenes that seemed more adult than YA. Jackson/Evie's sex scene and Evie/Death's make out scene were rather raunchy when compared to other YA. It kind of worked with the story though.

Yea, there was a LOT of WTFery but it was the kind of WTFery I enjoyed. I'm really looking forward to the next one, I so want Jackson to die.

“Evie’s with me now.”
Matthew had tilted his head. “Not Arcana.”

Seriously....who cares if Jack is Arcana or not...

And maybe in the end, it will be proved that he is also a tarot card.

So, Jack learns that Evie is not that innocent sweet cheerleader that he thought that she was. And now he has to accept that Evie is also a very efficient killer. Still he is full on obsessed with her.

On the other hand, Evie keeps learning new things about herself. And she finally meets Death!!!
October 6, 2013
Evie's finally come into her powers and used them against Arthur to destroy him and the evil he was causing. Jackson was taken back the change in Evie and unsure about exactly what is going on. The problem is that the game has only just begun and when Evie uses her powers she only wants to win.

I was a little shocked at Jackson's reaction to Evie. I knew he would be taken back by the Arcana'a powers but not that it would keep him from Evie. It did help that Finn's duplicity was revealed but it still took things a while to recover. Once they did, I was a very happy camper. I love when Jackson takes care of Evie.

Unfortunately, the bagman and the cannibals are both after them and they do get captured. The cannibals totally grossed me out...and how Guthrie played things off was gross. I was really worried about Evie there for a while.

Things escalate and we finally get to meet Death when Evie is captured through a betrayal. It was really interesting getting to know Death especially that he is a very sad and lonely man. Evie doesn't have all her memories but she does know something was between them in a past life.

I enjoyed getting to know more of the Arcana and I do like Evie's play on things. It will be interesting to see how things actually work out.

I really missed Jackson during all this time and it didn't help that we learned some secrets he was keeping from Evie. But...there is just something about him and about him and Evie.

description

At this point, you're probably leaning one way or the other....Team Death or Team Jackson. And of course, we're left hanging. I do have a theory though...

Of course, that all will happen (or most of it) in the next book that will come out who knows when...more than likely in a year. KC said the series will be at least three books but I'm hoping for more. There's so many more of the Arcana we haven't even met!

ENDLESS KNIGHT is dark and seductive. It’s intense. It’s riveting. It is action-packed from the very first sentence to the very last word on the very last page. It is beautiful and it’s gruesome. It’s tantalizing, it’s thrilling, it’s mind-blowing. It takes readers on an exhilarating, nerve-wracking, suspense-filled and positively electrifying ride. A ride that will leave them dangling precariously off the edge of a very steep cliff.

One player down. Twenty-one remain. The game has now officially begun. The Empress has made the first move and Death is now ready to make his.

With his sights set on Evie, it’s only a matter of time before he finds her, before he acts upon the threats of violence he’s been taunting her with, before they must face one another in a battle, a fight that Evie has never before won. Not as the May Queen. Not as the Red Witch, Phyta. Never.

But as the Poison Princess she must find a way to defeat him. Because in this game, where the prize is immortality and there can be only one winner, the stakes are higher than ever before. With the world on the verge of collapse this might be the final game that gets played. With no one else in their alliance strong enough defeat Death, Evie is their only hope for survival. And with only one lifetime to spend with Jack, losing now would mean losing him forever.

So she must do whatever it takes to win, to defeat Death, an immortal foe. Even if that means giving him her heart.

Author Kresley Cole expanded the world of the Arcana in this sequel – new characters were introduced, new alliances were made, new battles were fought, and one character’s past was revealed. She turned up the heat. She increased the suspense, the tension, the drama. She delivered shocking surprises. She uncovered secrets, lies, betrayals. She created a story that sizzles, is wicked and sexy and utterly enthralling.

ENDLESS KNIGHT picks up where POISON PRINCESS left off and immediately answers the question of what happens next, a question fans of this series have been anxiously awaiting. It continues the characters’ journey across its danger-filled landscape and presents them with new complications, new allies and enemies and even deadlier hurdles to overcome.

The story is filled with unexpected twists and turns that will keep the pages turning. It adds a new bad boy to the mix to make things even more interesting. It keeps things exciting with a new setting and new characters with intriguing abilities. And it all comes together through the author’s gorgeous, grisly, sarcastic, intoxicating and absolutely phenomenal writing.

Reviewer gives this book… (On the blog this got my 6 star off-the-menu rating)

On a personal note…

Every time I try to write down my personal thoughts about this book I realize that there’s just no way I can do it justice. My words are inadequate to describe just how I felt – how I feel – about this book.

I want to shout, “Oh my gosh you have to buy this book, you have to devour this book and you have to talk to me all about it once you have!”

Because I’m dying to talk to anyone and everyone about it. I’m dying to see what readers thought about what happened with Evie and Jack, what happened with Death and most of all what happened at the end. That ending… that ending is killing me.

I want to talk about how amazing it was to be back in this world, to see what happened after that ending in the first book that absolutely destroyed me, that broke my heart and made me so nervous about what would happen in this book. But words fail.

I want to talk about how reading this book felt like coming home – albeit to a dark and twisted world where human beings are more than a little bit savage, where a deadly game is playing out and where two of those players are favorite characters of mine. But I am unable to express just how happy it made me, how easy it was to love this story.

I want to share just what I thought about how things changed between Evie and Jack, how wary I now am about certain characters I used to trust, how thrilled I am that Death is everything I hoped he’d be and so much more. But every word that comes to mind is insufficient.

I want to talk to about how much I loved every single word of this story, every single direction it went in, every single interaction between the characters, every new character I met – yes, even Ogen – every single tension-filled, nail-biting, steamy hot, heartbreaking, chilling moment. But there are no words.

My words to describe the awesomeness that is this book pale in comparison to just how phenomenal it really is. They’re fumbling, nonsensical, pathetic little things. But they’re all I have. And not saying anything about this book seems somehow worse. So…

ENDLESS KNIGHT is a fan-freaking-tastic sequel. It blew my mind, patched it up and blew it to pieces all over again. It checked all the boxes. Dark – yes and I would have had it no other way. Sexy – yes, yes, yes and I’m talking the hot, steamy, “fan yourself” kind of sexy. Nerve-wracking – oh yes my nerves were frayed, shot, wrecked by the time I reached the end. Suspenseful – yes and of the “hold your breath” as if that would somehow help variety of suspense. Wicked – deliciously, delectably so. Action-packed – oh there was action, all kinds of action. It was intense, edge-of-your-seat exciting, and abso-freaking-lutely amazing.

In every way ENDLESS KNIGHT is, was and forever will be the perfect book for me. I loved the first book in the series – it was a top five favorite last year – but this book, this shocking and gorgeous and gruesome and jaw-dropping sequel moves this series into my top five favorite YA series of all time.

Original notes/thoughts:
Review TK. But this sequel was even better than the first. Did not think it possible. I was so wrong. It was surprising and sexy and that ending was incredible and I don't know who to trust in the game.

But this is so my kind of series and I hate everyone and love them and they're all sorts of wicked awesome and terrifying. Evie and Jack and Matthew and Lark and Joules and Death *sigh* and Selena. I have no clue which way the cards will fall.

This world is creepy and horrifying and fascinating. The writing is delicious and sarcastic and funny. And the story is intense and nerve-wracking and I am going to have to have to reread this series this weekend. Can't be helped.

Absolutely amazing. Totally off the charts. Going to be reeling for awhile.

This is my first time winning a contest from Goodreads.com and it was this book in a bound manuscript, plus the first, Poison Princess. You can imagine how excited I was.

description

I'm can't wait to give my first actual review and pray I can get this out without spoiling anything in this delightful novel. (Though there might be spoilers for people who haven't read the first book.)

Endless Knight was a wonder book to me, just like Poison Princess was. I'd always enjoyed post-apocalyptic scenarios, tarot cards, warlocks, demons, were-animals, anything mythical and romantic. Although maybe this book doesn't contain demons or were-animals...

description

There is a bunch of romance, fights(fights in this book, gotta love them), alliances, betrayals, and unexpected turns and realizations. Up is down, down is up. We come across three NEW Arcana that we haven't met yet and wowza.

I expected this book to show more of Death and it did. I'm sorry to say that although there is romance with Evie, it is not all with Jack. (Actually, i'm not sorry.) Half of this book is based on the Empress's relationship with A-*AHEM* Death. I don't mean to tease, he has such a lovely name.

All in all, I enjoyed this book immensely. I got it yesterday afternoon and finished it just about an hour and a half ago. I am definitely pining for the third. And this is me when I realize how long this will be.

I dreamed about this book the past two nights...

Let me know what you guys think of my first review. And one more thing: I've never had a bound manuscript. Do the pages in them come out regularly?

The boys ruined it for me.

On plot and pacing alone this should have been an easy 4 star read. I started it yesterday afternoon, and finished it in time to tuck myself in bed fairly early.
The first book was cool, and had the catchy gimmick of Evie recounting her story to a guy who had drugged her tea. From his POV you got that he was a serial killer who had nasty plans for her in the future. So for the entire book, you were sitting on pins and needles waiting for the drugs to kick in, and for him to stick her in the basement with the other girls.
Good stuff.

In this, there's no gimmick, but it's still got an interesting concept. These kids are all representatives of the Tarot's Arcana, and they each have different powers. Every so often their reincarnations battle it out to the death for immortality. Last Tarot standing wins.
There can be only ONE!
The battle always starts after some kind of a natural disaster (plague, famine, giant meteor, etc.) happens. This time around it was called the Flash.
I can't remember exactly, but it was something like a massive solar flare...
Sunlight is scarce, food is scarce, and women are scarce.
Cannibals? Not scarce.
And (of course) the Flash managed to create zombies.
I'm not sure...forget it. Evidently you can't have an apocalypse without zombies. I'm not even going to fight that one...

Anyway, Evie and some of the other Arcana have decided to form an alliance, and have agreed not to kill each other in order to permanently stop the game. Good! And now they're on the run from the Arcana who want to keep the game going in order to win immortality.
Which isn't really even immortality, because they can die in the next game.
This part of the story was really fun!

Ok. Here's what sucked my enjoyment level down.
Jack.
In the last book, he and Evie fall for each other. Cute.
He's this supposedly sexy Cajun from the wrong side of the tracks...yadda, yadda, yadda.
Fine.
The only problem with 'Sexy Cajun Bad-Boy' is that, if you don't tread that line carefully, it's only an ass-hair away from 'Quasi-French Redneck Asshole'.
But even as Jack slid comfortably into the role of Dirty Swamp-Boy Douchebag, I had hope.
After all, Death is the guy on the cover of this one, right? Maybe the author was going to pull a Darcy out of her hat and make this guy into the hero?
Yeah. No.
For about three seconds I thought...maybe he's not a psychopath?...and then Evie finally remembered her past with him.
Worst part?

Sorry. That sort of thing gets under my skin and crawls around. I think it sets a bad example for younger girls who read these. It doesn't matter why someone abuses you. Feel sorry for them after you get as far away from them as humanly possible. It's not that you're an awesomely understanding person who can help them find their inner puppy. You've been brainwashed. They even have a name for that sort of thing. It's called Stockholm Syndrome.
Possessive jealous guys are not that way because they love you. You're not a thing. And that she's mine shit is ridiculous. It's fine and dandy in adult novels where (hopefully) women understand that it's just fantasy. I just don't think it belongs in YA, where girls are still trying to get a grip on how real relationships work.

I also had a few eyebrow raising moments due to the sex in this thing. Not that anything shocked my delicate sensibilities, but just the fact that it wasn't Fade to Black sex. There's also an oral scene, but it wasn't descriptive. I'd say this one definitely needs to be labeled under Mature Young Adult.
Ok, I remember being Evie's age (16), so I don't think there's anything here that would be inappropriate for that age group.
I'm mentioning this because a lot kids who are tweens read these books, too. So if you're the parent of an 11 year old girl, you may want to steer clear of this one for a few years. Or not. It's your call.

The plot was 4 stars, the relationships were a shitty 2 stars.
3 stars feels generous, but the book was a fast and (mostly) entertaining read.

Brilliant, Compelling, Exciting, Intense and Gruesome:

While I absolutely loved Poison Princess, I’m not sure if Endless Knight was just as good or even better, but it is definitely close and this book series is one of the best YA paranormal series I have read. The incredible characters and the story itself are so unique and extremely addictive. Kresley Cole has a gift for storytelling and kept me riveted and hanging by the edge of my seat. There is a lot of action in this and a good dose of romance.

WARNING: DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU HAVE NOT READ POISON PRINCESS.

Endless Knight picks up where Poison Princess left off when Evie had come into her full powers and had eviscerated the Alchemist right in front of Jack and their crew. Poor Jack is a little freaked out and spends a couple chapters trying to come to terms with his fear and anger at his girl being “not quite human” and her ability to transform into something frightening. Once Jack finally has his head on straight and he accepts that he’s in love with Evie, what she is does not matter and he is back in the game. What an amazing character. He’s a handful, yet he is incredibly sweet, caring, loving, and sexy as hell and I just about melted over his sweet words and total adoration of Evie. That boy has it bad. He still wants to protect her even though clearly she is able to protect herself. Death is still around to antagonize and exasperate Evie, voicing her inevitable demise in her head.

In this installment, we meet some new Arcana. The kids face several dangers. It’s raining and the bagmen are getting stronger and the cannibals are a huge threat. The “cannibal chapter” is particularly disgusting, gruesome and utterly fucking disturbing (you have been warned). Kresley could give Stephen King a run for his money in this chapter.

I love that we get to meet Death in this book. He’s an interesting guy. He starts out as an absolute dickhead, but I eventually warmed up to him. He’s dark and twisted, but he’s lonely. We finally learn about his history with the Empress and it was unexpected. This guy has serious emotional baggage. At first, I was caught between hating Death and feeling sorry for him. When his “bone to pick” with Evie was revealed, my heart broke a little for him. There definitely is a thin line between love and hate with these two. Even though Death is definitely growing on me, he’s no Jack and I LOVE that sexy Cajun, even though Jack has some major secrets of his own.

And so, we get the dreaded YA Love Triangle. Ugh, I am not a fan of love triangles especially when there is the good with the bad in both men. If only they would end up in a threesome, but alas, this is YA so that’s not happening. ;)

This is a fantastic, engaging and fucking brilliant read that I would rate 5 stars. I am anxious for Book #3 because well, this one ended in a huge cliffhanger that left me mad as hell. Kresley has me hook, line and sinker with this series and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

*****Just a little heads up to all you moms out there. While this is considered Young Adult, this story contains sexual situations including intercourse and oral sex. While not nearly as graphic as what I usually read, my 11-year old reads YA, and I would never let her read this. I would only recommend it for readers over the age of 16.

Going into POISON PRINCESS I couldn’t help thinking Young Adult—this is going to suck, but Kresley Cole’s writing quickly won me over to Evie’s side, and then Emma Galvin sealed the deal with her mesmerizing narration. And now, here I am, completely committed to this series, and putting my stamp of approval on book 2. The characters show a level of maturity that I never expected from this genre, and there was even a sex scene in this installment. Yes folks, don’t let these teenagers fool you, this is grown up YA at its best. The author does such an amazing job of making readers dislike Death that when the love triangle began to develop I was convinced that nothing could sway me from Team Deveaux. Well, now I’m eating crow because Aric was so skillfully fleshed out that the Cajun is just a distant memory. Jackson who?

For a girl that doesn’t want to play the game, Evie sure is racking up Arcana symbols! I love how far she’s come from that scared young woman refusing to accept her new, albeit harsh reality, to the ring leader of an unlikely alliance of Arcana. Greene shows mercy when the situation calls for it, and still believes that more than one power card can survive the coming battle, but when he friends’ lives are on the line, she doesn’t hesitate to do what must be done. I enjoyed witnessing the Empress embrace her powers in ENDLESS KNIGHT; her abilities may be the complete opposite of Death’s, however life can, and does annihilate just as easily. Evie continues to surprise me at every turn from how she deals with the teeth (carnivores), to certain characters’ two-facedness, to Aric’s unexpected past. The Red Queen is no pushover!

Coles’ dystopian world-building marched forward in this installment with the Hierophant, Devil, Tower, Strength, Judgment, and World cards. I liked learning more about their tableaux, calls, and powers as well as the characters that they represent. I also developed a soft spot for Scarface, Cyclops, and Maneater—Lark’s wolves. The plot line was uncomplicated: escape Death, and when that fails, survive him. I enjoyed the showdown leading up to Evie’s capture, and her time with Aric was enlightening to say the least. I was happy that Jackson was finally clued in to the game and ecstatic when he and Evie found a brief respite in each other’s arms. But of course, just when Greene decides to trust him his deception comes to light.

This novel took so many turns that I did not see coming, and oddly enough, I found myself rooting for the bad guy! Like most other readers, love triangles are the bane of my existence, but the one in ENDLESS KNIGHT is so far removed from what is typical of this trope that I wasn’t the least bit upset by it when it eventually surfaced. I’d mentioned in my review of book 1 that Emma Galvin’s narration carried that installment, so I was relieved to see her flying solo this time around. I’m not knocking Keith Nobbs’ delivery, but I prefer to give credit where it’s due. Galvin excels at bringing THE ARCANA CHRONICLES’ dark tone to life while still doing the youthful characters justice with a YA authenticity that so many performers in this genre lack.

ENDLESS KNIGHT concluded with one heck of a cliffhanger, but that’s a recipe for success as far as pre-orders of DEAD OF WINTER go because you can bet I’ll be glued to my earbuds come hell or high water on January 6th, 2015.

* Buddy read with Den & Ella<3*

Although, YA and dystopia genres as well as "Hunger Game" kind of plot aren't my cup of tea I really loved Poison Princess, the first book in this series.

I have mixed feelings about this one.

Even though you can predict from the beginning of the book that there will be a cliffhanger and despite some roll eyes moments, I really liked the first half of the book but not so much the second one. And not because of the cliffy but because of the "one step forward, two step backward" dance at the end.

The book is named after Death —that I really liked— and the story starts right when book 1 ended. The first half was action packed but unfortunately the second part kind of dragged and had some epic WTF moments.

A thing I really liked in the first part of the book is that Kresley Cole seems to have decided to avoid the "everybody gotta die but me" kind of plot. Unfortunately, she also decided to go to the typically YA love triangle and OTT crap.

The end of the story not only annihilated the interesting parts of the second half of the book, but it also made a total schizo out of Evie. This is worse than any imaginable cliffy.

It sadden me to say it but I'm done with this series.

Same!! As before. I'm Team IDK!!! I think this is one reason I shy away from love triangles now. But ONWARD!! I'm enjoying this reread. Happy reading!

4 1/2 "Life and Death" Stars!

Loved it! I don't know what team I'm on yet, but Death sure did make my heart go pitter patter. Jack still has my attention though as he obviously has Evie's.

This is such a creative and unique (at least to me) world Ms. Cole has created. Can't wait to see how this all plays out. Happy reading!

DAFUQ JUST HAPPENED?!? What an utter DISAPPOINTMENT!

Especially since I LOVED the first book and was so eagerly anticipating for this one. *le sigh* Everything that I loved from the first book was missing in this one. Instead we get Evie (who I thought was such a badass on the the 1st book) become the ultimate pin-up poster girl for the "YA Female Cliche Foundation- Loving LUSTING Over Two Guys Since Time Immemorial". Excuse me while I go gag. Yuck.

Seriously!?! This series could have been amazing but it just had to have a stupid, freaking LOVE TRIANGLE!!! A love triangle ladies & gents. OF ALL THINGS! Good grief. That is the ultimate kiss of death in my book & I can count on one hand the many times I have tolerated this idiotic notion. I, for one, am SO SICK & DISGUSTED with these YA female heroines going stupid over two guys. "I love him but oh, I ALSO love him!" Oh wow, the tragedy. "Whatever should I do?" Hit yourself on the face with a frying pan & wake up, that's what. Ugh. Cannot. Stand. It. And the guys that let themselves get caught up in these kind of situations. *facepalm* Has anyone ever heard of self-respect? How about self worth? No? Huh didn't think so.

I could write a "proper" review & explain in further details why I didn't enjoy this book but naaah, It'll just end up making my blood boil. Man, what a disappointment. I am truly saddened I didn't enjoy it because this series could've been my next favorite thing but alas, no. Don't even know if I'll be picking the next one.

I honestly couldn't care less now at this point, for what it's worth though, I'm still rooting for Jack. Because Death... no. Just NO. HECK NOOOOO.

HOT FUCKING DAMN!

I'm so confused.. utterly confused. WHO DO I SHIP NOW?

Endless Knight just mind fucked me guys. I'm so confused as to who I should believe and I also have no idea who I should be shipping Evie with. Jack was easy to love in the first book but now I have so many questions about him. Then there's Death who I didn't think I was going to fall in love with.. but damn, now I have. I haven't decided if he's my new favorite character because honestly, he's got some tough competition: Lark.

Evie was awesome and lovable in this book. I had a feeling that when she would "try" and get death to fall for her that she would fall as well. I adored everything about them and laughed so hard when she would try to get his attention. Like washing the wolf.

Lark, who was previously mentioned, was hilarious. I loved her snarkyness and sarcasm. I am totally on board with them being an awesome ass duo and kick butt night and day. Besides her, we still get to meet everyone from the first book.. but again, I'm kind of confused on who I should be trusting at this point. Things seemed really off in this book with Matthew and Jack so yeah.. I'm going to keep on thinking and wondering until I dive into the third book.

This book added more information about Arcana and I loved every second. Getting to know strengths and weaknesses kept me highly entertained. Getting to learn more about Evie's previous life and how she's connected with Death was eye opening. My mind is currently still trying to make sense of everything.

Overall, I really enjoyed this audio and I can't wait to dive into the next one.

Me: "Yeah sure, this game is thousands years older than you, you can surely end it with an accord! Let's have a tea party!"
Jack: *drinks* *stares at Evie's ass some more*
Evie: "Is he staring?" ..."YES he is! YES YES YES"

Evie: *falls down*
Me: "Bed is broken, is this a Edward banging Bella repeat?"
Jack: "It's a trap! Cannibals!"
Me: "Please let them eat you."

Jack: "Evie's my girlfriend now!" *marks the territory*
Evie: *swoon*
Me: *vomits*

Jack: "A cave! Let's have sex!"
Evie: "YES."
Me: "Don't they know that only Herondales can make caves sexy?"
...
Me: "They don't."

Death: *kidnaps Evie*
Me: "Now KILL her please."

Death: *being incredibly hot*
Evie: *being incredibly stupid*
Me: "Nothing new then."

Evie: "I'm a prisoner! This SUCKS!" *dances around, shaking her butt while Death watches*
Evie: "He's so hot"
Death: *drools*
Me: "No, not you too." *facepalm*

*two hundreds pages later*

Death: "Jack told you a lot of bullshit."
Evie: "Whaaaaaat?"
Me: *facepalm*

Evie: *still shaking her butt*
Death: *brings her toward the bed*
Evie: "No. I can't do this!!!"
Me: "Poor boy, he'll need a cold shower after this."
Death: *goes hunting*
Evie: *being stupid. As always*
Death: *comes to the rescue*
Evie: "We have to save Jack."
Death: "Sure. But you'll be my wife."
Me: *brain-fried*

-- The end --

This was like, paranormal romance without sex in it. So, a bad paranormal romance anyway.
Endless Knight is, maybe, the worst book I've read this year. And let me tell you, I've read quite terrible books this year.

Di base, credo che la Cole non abbia capito che differenza c'è tra scrivere harmony e ya. Endless Knight è un harmony senza sesso, quindi pure un harmony veramente veramente brutto.

I'm not sure I like how this weird love "triangle" is playing out but I'll withhold judgement until I read more in the series. Let's just say there is almost no Cajun in this book and I miss his delicious accent. Nuff said.

I was still so uncertain about all the ins-and-outs about the Arcana and how everyone was involved even at the end of the first book. This book gives a much needed information dump that I thought was missing in book one.
