The wrong way, and the right way. Needing first hand experience to write a credible BDSM romance Kate signs up for a weekend of workshops, demonstrations, and all things related to the subject. Falling for a flashy poser she gets the very worst experience possible. Enter Chase, the knight in torn jeans, to the rescue. In agonizingly slow steps those two learn each other and grow to understand fully what really lies at the heart of submission. In her inimitable signature style Ms Thompson describes the transcending quality of a D/s relationship. Where the trappings are inconsequential, only the true feelings are important.
I gave this one a go the other day after having it in my inbox for a little while now. I read the book for two reasons I do like Ms. Thompson's brand of BDSM and I was in the mood for a little rope and suspension play.
Kate is an author and as research for a book that she has in the works she decides to take part in a BDSM Power play weekend in the city. As much as the weekend was for her book, Kate herself is drawn to this world – always have been. Her first foray into this world did not meet with the reaction that she would have liked and Kate had since brushed that part of her nature under the carpet for a long time now, with the weekend open to anything she is willing to make the most of it to see how far she can stretch herself.
Not having gone to one of these things before Kate was a little apprehensive but open to having fun and just being one of the numbers, things does not go as planned for a few reasons. Kate is gorgeous and as such the beautiful people gravitated towards her - one in particular, Master John, then there is Kate's sensuality and utter grace in her naivety, people see this immediately and wants to take her in hand and introduce her to the pleasures of being a submissive – one in particularly, Chase Summers.
When the weekend goes horrible wrong through the ruthlessness of one of these men – it is left up to the other to make it right, but only if Kate can see that being submissive can be a thing of beauty. What worked for me
The entire first section of this book is set in the BDSM weekend setting ( a converted hotel conference room laid out specifically for the event), I thought Ms Thompson gave a true description of the cross section of people and events that you would see and meet at these places.
I really liked the perseverance of Chase. His mannerism and his dedication to a way of live is evident by how much care he takes to follow up with Kate when she needed a helping hand.
I appreciated the characters even if I ended up not liking one or two of them. The more repugnant ones were a necessary evil to firstly move the storyline along and secondly to give a balance view of the type of people that end up at these BDSM conference.
The authors love and investment in rope bondage and rope making can be seen and I really connected with Chase – through his love for what he does.
The fact that most of the rope play was centred around Shibari and Japanese Rope Bondage style was a plus for me – This is my favourite style of rope bondage.
As a couple I never really connected with Kate and Chase, however I was liking the Dom and Sub situation they had going. It was not the rigid restrictive form of BDSM, but more a give and take and a meeting of the minds so to speak.
What didn’t work for me
As I mentioned before I just didn’t get the romantic connect between Kate and Chase. There was no passion there for me, they connected because of their love for the lifestyle and the fact that they were there for each other when it mattered the most, but other than that it just never felt just right to me.
This book is not a ménage but at one point this book felt like there were three people in the relationship that was trying to be formed between Kate and Chase.
I have to make some assumptions about how some of the earlier unsavoury events in the books would be resolved , however I would have loved to see how this played out myself.
Bottom Line
HEART OF SUBMISSION was an easy read for me, I was not expecting to connect with Kate and Chase on the level that I did, but I did and it was good. There was no little spark of magic which I am used to from Ms. Thompson in this one for me, but what I got instead was a nice balanced view into the world of Dom and Subs, I met some people who were as sweet as they were outlandish and I got to meet two people who were willing to recognize a friend when they came calling.
I’m in love! Both in Chase and Kate, but most of all in their ’interaction’, their relationship and how they were there for each other. The word awakening has a new meaning for me after their story. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Claire Thompson take a bow!! You sure know how to pen a stimulating and mesmerizing book. Master John has been etched in my mind forever. Can't wait for you to publish more of such escapades.
Kate is an author that has been given the task by her publisher to write a BDSM novel. She has no real experience in the BDSM lifestyle. So she signs up for a BDSM immersion weekend. This is where Kate's journey begins to finding her Heart of Submission, or will she?
John, is a bully trying to pass himself off as a Dom. So far he has been successfull in fooling almost everyone. John fancies himself as a whip master and is giving a demonstration at this weekend event. He tries to get Kate to be his volunteer which she promptly declines. John is not deterred and insists she negotiate a scene with him for the play party that night. She declines, but would consider the second night.
Chase is a rope master and a Dom to his core. He also is giving an demonstration this weekend that Kate attends. Chase feels an immediate connection to Kate and is hoping to negotiate his own scene with her.
The second night play party arrives with both Doms in attendance hoping to scene with Kate. John gets to her first using his charms to whisk her way to a private secluded area where he already has the scene set up. Kate in her inexperience trusts John and allows him to secure her. He seduces her in the beginning but then quickly turns cruel with the cane. He refuses to honor her Safeword taking her beyond her limits into a non-consensual, unsafe, and definitely not sane scene. This is where Chase enters the scene to her rescue. She fleas the play party to return to her hotel where she decides this is not for her and goes home that night.
Chase is desperate to find Kate to make sure she is okay, but where does he start? Can he find Kate and help her? Can Kate find her submissive courage to give the Lifestyle another chance? You will have to read this delightful journey for yourself to find out. Claire Thompson is a talented author who never disappoints in her writing. Thank-you Claire for another beautifully written story.
Claire Thompson gives readers HEART OF SUBMISSION… Book 5 in the Erotic Awakenings series. This was a beautiful romance. Outside of the the BDSM setting… romance and love are the heart of this book, making it slightly different to previous books. It’s loves beautiful journey inside theBDSM lifestyle - a journey of sexual discovery into a world where Kate writes novels for a living. It’s a new book, a new challenge and to explore long held desires hidden. How far she wants to take this is for her to find out. It’s a journey for Kate, a journey that will near destroy her, when she is overwhelmed by the advances of a Dominant who’s interests take her beyond what she can handle. It will be up to another, a quieter soul, who is more than enough Dominant to help her overcome her fears. In his capable hands, he will teach, guide, and love - new awakenings explored and discovered. He will teach Kate, that being a submissive isn’t a choice, it’s the very core of their personae - it will become their life and love.
Heart of Submission - Claire gives you a beautifully and sexually descriptive story. Honest, refreshing, and knowledgable. It will have a scene that may disturb readers but it’s an experience that Kate goes through and well in keeping with the story’s plot line. Those moments of darkness are handled with care. Safe and Consensual for those characters that truly care, practice and teach! HEART OF SUBMISSION is Kate’s submissive awakening. Take that journey with her and Chase, you will find yourself turning these pages wanting to see where he takes her.
An author, Kate, is given the opportunity to write a BDSM novel, but she has very little previous involvement in this lifestyle. Without some experience, she believes the emotions in her story will not be able to come fully alive.
Kate was nervous yet excited, eager to learn, and totally drawn to the lessons and information provided at a BDSM “Immersion Weekend” that she decided to take part in. I loved the way we were able to enter into Kate’s fearful hesitation and her emotional enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the first Dom she encounters is a dangerous fool, who takes her on a harrowing journey into the hazards of misogynist Doms. Luckily, she has also met Chase, a rope master, who cares about subs and their needs and desires. Watching Kate and Chase get to know each other was fascinating.
I love the way each erotic implement a Dominant used became an extension of his loving attention, thereby, allowing the submissive the ability to fly into a headspace like no other. Together they reached heights neither could reach alone.
Damn, this book was outstanding. The journey, the adventure and the love that can be found in a true Dominant/submissive lifestyle is absolutely beautifully breathtaking. The joy of true dominance and submission given and accepted freely from one individual to pleasure the other is the true “Heart of Submission”.
Claire always incorperates the true essence of BDSM into her books, and this one is a perfect example. If you have read about it, and wondered why people would do such a thing, you need to read this book. It's like learning about the lifestyle through the eyes of a beginner. Kate, who is an author, is who we learn through. She attends a workshop to gain first hand knowledge because she is writing a book and can't get the mind set and emotions correct without feeling and seeing it for herself. And since it was something she has always had a deep, hidden interest in, that was a big plus. Unfortunately, she is blinded by looks and swagger and has a very unfortunate and wrong introduction to the scene and flees in pain and panic. Luckily, there is a true Dom who is able to step in and help her through her lasting fears and lead her along the right path. In addition, something that I really liked was all the different body types were represented and accepted without prejudice. A side character, Stacey, was short and overweight and an absolute delight. She was so body positive and fun. I do recommend this book as a great read and also a great lesson.
I've enjoyed each novel I have read by Ms. Thompson. I would rate this just less than 5 stars. Not as intense as other novels by Ms. Thompson. This is Kate and Chase's story. Kate is a writer with an assignment she has no real personal knowledge about. Internet research was fine for some things, but she was just not feeling the "passion." How good could her novel be if she really did not know first hand what she was writing about? Good thing she was close to New York. Finding an immersive BDSM weekend, she signed up and was ready to learn, learn, learn. She learned alright! More than she wanted. Thank goodness for good people. Thank goodness for Chase. This is the first time in a long time, that Chase has felt "something" for a woman, and that woman was Kate. I loved the romance. There is an intense scene (warning). I loved the banter between Chase and Kate!
I was completely blown away by this story! Kate longs to explore her submissive side. When she is told her next book will have BDSM elements in it, she relishes the opportunity to do some research. Her trust is betrayed, and at this point, I had to stop reading and take a breather. Ms Thompson described the events so well, I could feel the woman's fear (not the pain, though. Ouch!). The tale continues with Kate still yearning to explore this side of herself, and learning to trust with the help of Chase, a rope expert Dom. But Chase has his own healing to do. I loved reading about how two strong, yet vulnerable people share their journey together and come out the other side. Excellent, well-written story.
I always find Claire Thompson an insightful, thoughtful author, and this book is no exception. Kate needs to research the BDSM world for a book she is writing, but for a craving she has felt for some time. When a BDSM lifestyle conference comes up, she takes the opportunity to do just that. Unfortunately, she chooses the wrong Dom for her first experience, but fortunately Chase is there to rescue her. I admire her determination not to allow that to taint her desire to explore her attraction to Chase. He has his own demons to overcome and I admire Kate for not allowing his past to affect their possible future. Well paced, compelling, and absorbing to the end. ****I was given a copy and this is my honest review****
A novella in the Erotic Awakenings Book 5 series, but it is a complete standalone.
I enjoyed the fact that Kate was a author who needed to do research for her new book and joins a BDSM weekend to find out more. Her reactions to what she sese around her is very natural and something easily to relate too. She is drawn to a guy, but there is this nagging little voice in her head warning her. A feeling a lot of readers will recognize.
Then there is Chase. He is dealing with his own past, but Kate awakings feelings in him.
The scene’s between him and Kate are just wonderful. I could just picture it all. It was a very enjoyable read, but i wished it had been longer so there would be more Chase and Kate and their relationship.
Kate has been considering exploring her submissive side but when she wants to delve deeper, her boyfriend called her a freak and ended their relationship. She now has been tasked to write a BDSM romance and is finding it hard to create the story. She decides to sign up for a weekend retreat to "research" and immerse herself in the lifestyle.
Kate finds herself in a scene where an abusive man is topping her. Her safe word is ignored and she is rescued by Chase. After Kate runs away she vows to leave the world of BDSM behind, but Chase reaches out and their chemistry cannot be denied. Will Kate allow herself to trust again? Will Chase reveal his secret and open his heart again/
This is a quick read and I found myself rooting for Kate and Chase to succeed!
This story by Claire Thompson is as enjoyable as other stories she has written that I have read. A young woman, Kate, has had some bad BDSM experiences but meets Chase, a wonderful young man recovering from an unfortunate love affair. He is an expert in bondage and rope making, and after rescuing Kate from being beaten by a terrible Dom, a relationship develops between them that is warm, sexual, and teaches her about the wonderful side of BDSM. Both characters are well drawn and interesting, and they know what they want and go after it. It was a really enjoyable book. I received a free copy of this book via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Mate is a romance writer but her editor has asked her to write a BDSM book and she is having trouble with it. She decides to attend a BDSM workshop weekend to get some experience and to do some research. She meets some cool people but gets the attention of a guy who is supposed to be a whip master. She also is of interest to Chase who is a row master. Unfortunately the ship master manages to talk her into playing with him. Things go downhill from there and Chase rescues her. She runs but Chase is able to find her email and he contacts her. They go on from there. Ms. Thompson always does a lovely portrayal of BDSM. Her books are a joy to read.
Us. There is no greater word in a loving bonding relationship. No me or I, but us. Together. Bonded. Tight. Tapping into the intense, needing part of you. Knowing what you want. Being able to put words to those wants and needs. I love Claire Thompson’s books. Thru her I am able to let that part of me fly in the safety of her loving words. I am transported into the world I want to live in my next life. With Chase and Kate I got to live vicariously in their world.
Will Chase bring out Kate’s submission Claire pulls you quickly into the life of Kate who is struggling with her newest BDSM novel because she has no real experience to write from. Signing up for a immersion weekend, Kate attends seminars where she meets Chase and John and attends the nightly party. Chase attends the party looking for Kate, but John already convinces Kate to do a private scene. No spoils from the party. Though Chase’s patience with Kate on introducing her into the BDSM lifestyle is hot and steamy and will have you turning the pages quickly to find their HEA.
If only every sub could find her Chase. Oh my gosh, my heart be still. I just loved his approach, attitude, and self-awareness. Kate’s mistake was not listening to her instincts. As usual Ms. Thompson does an excellent job of making her character real and the BDSM understandable and authentic. I love her stories because they make the reader feel like they are right there experiencing the action. She has a way of writing that makes everything dynamic and relevant within that world.
Loved it! Claire does it again, another romantic, hot BDSM book. There's something so realistic about people overcoming their fear and pain and of course finding love too. Couldn't put the book down, so good!
This is a quick, sweet story of two damaged souls finding each other and healing. Sweet and steamy and very satisfying. I'm on to read the rest of the series!
Woah this was great!! It went way deeper than i initially expected and the slice level too was lower than what you would expect from a claire Thompson novel but the depth covered up for it. Loved it!
I very much enjoyed travelling with Kate, aka Ashley, as she participated in a BDSM Intensive Weekend Workshop as research for her latest novel. Yes, this is a BDSM theme read but more impressive is the romance that is intertwined throughout. Claire Thompson does an excellent job melding the two as usual.
Although Kate had repeatedly said she was a novice to everyone she spoke with, there is a Dom that is so eager and so insistent on a scene with her that he pressures and seduces her into a situation far beyond her knowledge, ability and comfort. Unfortunately, the Dom has his own issues and is immersed in his own agenda, not paying attention to his sub- “a bully in Dom’s clothing” and the scene destroys Kate’s trust in the process.
Chase is there to play the white knight, showing Kate/Ashley the sensual, exhilarating side of sane, safe and consensual D/s encounters and explore a relationship neither were looking for. Trust, once broken takes a long time to earn, providing the basis for the journey that Kate undergoes with a more cognizant and benevolent Dom. Voluntary review.
This is the 3rd Claire Thompson that I’ve read and the one I enjoyed the most so far. Ashley Kendall is the pseudonym for Kate Alexander, a popular romantic novelist, and she’s embarking on some background research for her latest work – featuring BDSM. She’s had a tiny taste of this in a previous relationship that ended badly and has always been curious about it, so she books onto a ‘BDSM Immersion Weekend’.
It was her secret adventure. She could reinvent herself, just for this one weekend. After all, it was Ashley Kendall who was attending. Kate Alexander could remain safely hidden, watching from the sidelines, taking notes.
She shares a motel room with Stacey, an outgoing and experienced girl on this scene who promises to take her under her wing, and make sure that ‘Ashley’ has a good time. Things do not go to plan, however. Master John Brighton, one of the most experienced Doms, takes an instant interest in her. He tries to persuade her to attend his seminar on whipping techniques - and maybe participate in a scene with him.
She felt his hand on her shoulder, gently but forcibly turning her back towards him. “Ashley,” he said, reading her tag. Looking back at her face, his smile was warm enough to melt butter. “I bet you’re a wild one, in serious need of taming.”
She has doubts about taking part, but assured that the scene will stop if she utters her safe word, she allows him to cane her. When his sadistic nature becomes apparent – and he brutally ignores her safe word – it takes another of the resident Doms, Chase Saunders, to intervene and rescue her. She’d liked Chase earlier and enjoyed his seminar on rope play, but for him to see her messed up and traumatized is too much to cope with. Especially when he’d warned her to think carefully about taking part. She packs her bags and flees for home.
He reached for her arm, thinking how he’d fantasized so much over the last two days about being alone with her, but not like this. Not cleaning up the terrible mess another man had made.
She shrugged his hand away, shaking her head violently. “No,” she said, her voice wavering. She took a breath and said with more force. “Leave me alone. Just leave me be. I can take care of myself. I don’t want you or him.” She shot a venomous look in Brighton’s direction that would have made Chase whoop in triumph if she weren’t also rejecting him in the process.
Chase is desperate to make sure she’s okay and tracks down her email address through her website, finally making contact with her. They talk. Meet for lunch. Get to know each other. Chase encourages her to continue exploring the world of BDSM. With him. She plucks up the courage to visit him and after a sensual and mind blowing introduction to bondage, they make love. This should be the start of a wonderful romance… only Chase – at the height of passion – calls her by another woman’s name.
She should just let his gaffe pass, keep quiet, pretend she hadn’t noticed. Instead, she found herself asking, “What just happened?”
Chase turned his head slowly towards her, his eyes dark and filled with grief. “I’m so sorry, Kate.”
Chase has a dark secret of his own and one that threatens the basis of their fledgling relationship.
It was that expression of pity that pushed him the rest of the way down. In the space of a few minutes, Kate had gone from eager, adoring new lover to just another person who felt sorry for poor Chase. He could hardly bear the transformation.
I think what made this Claire Thompson stand out, for me, was that I felt engaged with the characters. This was a romance novel – erotic and sexy – but at its heart was a love story of two lonely individuals learning to trust each other and finding love. This was a great read. Angsty and emotional, it tugged on my heartstrings and pleased me with its conclusion.
Reading a story by Claire Thompson I know I’m going to get immersed in the lifestyle. Ms. Thompson writes authentic scenes and characters that portray vivid storylines.
Kate AKA Ashley (her pen name as a writer) wants to immerse herself into the BDSM world so that she could write realistic stories, she joins a weekend event. There she meets several people, one is a Dom who thinks very highly of himself and another one that is very much a protector.
Dom and sub come together but stumble through not communicating, one of the most important elements of the lifestyle. These two just pulled at my heartstrings as they slowly get to know each other and learn to trust again.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Chase is a hottie in this book I really enjoyed it *Thanks*
::Edit:: 8/12/2012 I reread this today. Just wanted to stop in and say how much I enjoyed it again. I love when books, especially bdsm books, have so much true emotion in them. I think this was written wonderfully and I really enjoyed going on a journey with a character when they are at the beginning of a new experience. I also love when both MC in the book fulfill each other so well. Thank You Claire. Always a joy to read =)
I love a good HEA, but an HEA after things go horribly wrong and a loss is suffered, those are even better! Kate is curious, and her curiosity made her unsafe. Chase is experienced, but has a deep down pain he hasn’t expressed. Together, they find their way, and develop a deep bond and a sensual connection that makes them both perfectly whole
