Rudolph

Rate this book

Crotchety and cranky Rudy—aka Santa—is in a foul mood every Christmas season. He talks to lots of children and even more parents but not with guys looking for dates. Only when his best helper makes him a very special gift does he meet someone to his liking. Kind of. Because that someone is made of flour and spices—and to impress him, Rudy seriously has to work on his seduction skills.

Sam C. Leonhard is a journalist by profession who lives in southern Germany. Writing has been part of her life since age twenty, but somehow it was never enough to report the latest news about small-town politics. She wrote short stories for friends and family until a few years back she discovered the world of fandom. The Petulant Poetess is where she feels at home; slash became an addiction as soon as she stumbled over the first story.

If not writing—which isn't half as often as she'd like—Sam takes care of her son, her dog, a few cats, the madness at work, and life in general. She likes to believe she’s got some humor left after years of dealing with people who usually don’t understand what she’s talking about when she says she’s writing fantasy and gay porn on top of it.

That was a smart cookie! (heee!! pardon the pun). Anyway, I thought the twist was smart. I didn't know where the story would be going because even until half-page, all I got was a grumpy Santa Claus, by the name of Rudolph (whose real Santa father were apparently retired in Hawaii and his big sister was well, the (Easter) Bunny), who didn't like his job so much. Until his assistant, Hank, gave him a surprise as Christmas present. What was it? It had to do with cookie *wink*. The ending was coming too fast though. I could only consider it as hopeful HFN? And greedy ole me, I prefer a full HFN (if I cannot get my HEA). Thus, the rating ...

Fun twist on the German saying "Dein Traummann muss erst noch gebacken werden" (The man of your dreams has yet to be baked).

But at least there is already a mold for him:

This short was.... really bizarre. I mean, I liked it. I think. And the writing was solid and rather creative, with a dry and wry sense of humor I enjoyed.

But I also found it a little disturbing.

It felt like it was supposed to be an allegorical tale, but if it was, I think I missed the point...?

I will leave you with: "A naked, male cookie-man."

....You're wondering what the hell it's all about now, aren't you? >:} (Truthfully? So am I. LOL)

Sorry, this was . . . bizarre. And not at all romantic.

This short story is a funny, thoughtful, and altogether a very different take on what Santa Claus's life might look like. Well, in this case his name is Rudolph, and he isn't only grumpy and in a terribly bad mood, but he hates the holidays and is deeply depressed as well. The whole situation this variation on what might be happening up at the North Pole is described with very few words, but the narrative is so eloquent that it pulled me into this "new and different interpretation" within the first few paragraphs.

Rudolph doesn’t only hate Christmas, he hates children. Actually, the way these kids are described (not to mention their parents) I am not surprised! Demanding presents by yelling at Santa cannot possibly get you what you want, they should know that. The whole picture shows the "modern" way of celebrating Christmas – and everything that is wrong with it. No wonder Santa is getting an ulcer and is less than happy!

The gift from his personal assistant, Hank, is an unwanted surprise at first, but as its full impact is revealed, even this hardened, bitter version of Santa begins to melt. I loved the whole setup and the ending (while it comes too early for my taste) is absolutely wonderful.

If you like stories that make you laugh, if you think you might enjoy a slightly different take on what Santa's life might be like, and if you're looking for a story that is as thoughtful as it is humorous, you will probably like this short book as much as I did. I have placed it firmly onto my reread list!

This story was way too short! It seemed more like a snippet of a scene than an actual story but I really enjoyed it. While Rudy might be moody, grouchy and resents Christmas (even though he's Santa), he's so cute I just wanted to cuddle him. The world this story takes place in is very interesting and I really wish it had been longer so we could have explored it all further.

Beyond that, this was such a cleverly done read. A cookie turning into a man?? Who would have thought! Rudy sure didn't! I loved his reactions to the cookie and how, at first, he couldn't stop staring and pretty much freaked out when it started to change. I loved the whole concept but I really wished it had been longer so we could see what Rudy does with Jack and how Jack copes with everything. Very interesting story, though!

Different spin on Santa, but if was cute. Would have loved another chapter...it ended just as it was getting ready to get good.

Although super cute, especially at the end, there just wasn't enough story for me.

This is the kind of story that some people enjoy for the lighthearted fantasy look at Santa and others may find off-putting. What helps here is that Santa is really Rudy. He inherited the role of Santa, he’s 35, fit and basically hates that he was forced to be Santa when his father retired. He hates annoying kids, detests the cold, he can never meet any men in his job, basically his life is one big ball of the suck.

He takes the day off, refusing to visit any malls and be mauled by kids, and is sitting feeling sorry for himself, when his able assistant brings him some tea and a cookie. However Rudy also hates sweets, but he is kind of fascinated by the cookie. Eventually he’s told that it was created especially for him and he has to dunk it in the tea. Well, that causes quite a change in it, and he watched the cookie grow to be a full-sized man. It seems he hasn’t been hiding his homosexuality as well as he thought, and everyone figured he needed a companion.

Rudy really was an awkward curmudgeon. Of course at first he finds it hard to separate cookie from man. Is he real? Just sugar and spice and flour? He’s never really flirted before, and certainly not been in a relationship. It ends just at the beginning for them, as Rudy comes to accept that he is a real boy. Some may find Rudy a bit too curmudgeonly, but maybe my current mood made me want to say “you tell ‘em Rudy” rather than encourage him to get in the spirit as everyone around him seemed to be.

It was fun and a bit of true fantasy storytelling. I think if you enjoy these kind of spoofs on Christmas it will be a fun read, however if you just can’t think of Santa in “that” way at all (even though technically he only ‘plays’ Santa), it might not be for you.

Rudolph is unhappy. Being a Santa runs in his family. And he hates it. Hates kids. Hates Christmas. Just hates it all. And most of all? He hates those freaking cookies.

His assistant, Hank, decides that Santa needs a special gift this year. And what a gift!

This is a fun short story (only 20 pages), but each character has…well…character.

The ending leaves the door open, but it’s still a nice ending.

2.5 Something about this short story just didn’t work for me. I’m not sure if it was the cookie man or Rudolph’s crappy attitude or what. Rudy has such a bad attitude about it all (his inherited job as Santa, the real Santa!) that when Hank (his assistant) makes him a companion, I felt sorry for the cookie man!

For those who like their holiday stories with a twist, this would be a good choice. For the more traditional (or those who don’t like whiney MC’s!), it’s a little off.

In this story Santa is called Rudolph and he is a bad-tempered, lonely man who doesn't even like Christmas very much. His assistant, Hank, can see that he's not happy and gives him a special Christmas gift. This was a very short story and really only showed the beginning for the two MCs but it's nice to think that Jack would be able to show Rudolph the true meaning of Christmas.

Okay this story is truly creepy and totally weird. I didn't like it at all. Rudolph was to depressing and to negative. A reader should get into a Christmas spirit, but I felt a need to run.... Creepy....

"Annoyed, Rudolph glared at the thing, then at Hank, and finally at the world outside the window..." Jeez, this guy-- he's so funny! XD
OMG, a cookie-man! OwO And he named him XD

This was a funny read, too short for my taste-- but oh, well. :)

Not my cup of tea but well written story about a grumpy Santa lacking the Christmas spirit until someone gives him an unusual gift.

Unexpected and adorable. Rudy bordered on Scrooge, I felt so bad for how unhappy he was! Hank is fabulous and the world and magic were charming.
