When you have been a public speaker for as long as I have and have spent so much time and money reading and researching educational material as much as I have, you begin to wonder with pride, arrogance and ignorance – Is there any book that can teach me something new?

Well, that is where Suzanne Bates slam your brains and your experience with masterpiece of her own.

With nuggets of information that range from her personal experience as a reporter and paid speaker, she streaks through years of experience and leaves you in absolute awe as to the number of pointers you were taught since as first set foot on the sacred hallowed ground of communication to the really finer touches that one needs to consider that transform and transcend an ordinary speaker into an extraordinary communicator.

I loved the various parts of this book - where she enumerated the importance of content, the words of wisdom one can gain only from 20 years of being paid as a speaker, the unassuming mistakes we make in front of the media, the superb 6 steps of self assessment, how to deal with quick thinking to dealing with audiences, the 98 percent solution to the crisp and candid summaries she decorated in chapter in the end.

The only downside to this book was the ‘sales-pitch’ that I felt she peppered all throughout the book – which I feel is become a very westernized concept of trainers and speakers, where they want you to know and know that you have to go only to them if you want to really know and know that they are the best for you. Honestly Suzanne, you didn’t have to convince me, simply because your book is and will be a classic for all ages.

All in all, wow – what a book.

I not only read it once – I made sure I read it three times until I soaked in every bit of what she had to share with me.

Brilliant book and a must read for all speakers, communicators and leaders.

Overall rating – 9/10.

There are a multitude of books about improving public speaking, presenting, and communication abilities, but what I appreciated most about Speak Like a CEO is that it stressed repeatedly that the only way to really improve is lots and lots of practice. This can be practice with a coach-for-hire (Bates is a coach herself and plugs her services throughout), practice with people already in your life at work or at home who are willing to give you honest feedback, or practice by yourself with recording yourself speaking, self-evaluating, and working to improve. While I was reading a library copy, I can see the value in owning a physical copy of this book just for the exercises included.

Besides "practice, practice, practice," my other big takeaway from this book is the concept of putting your audience's needs first and foremost when planning your speech's content and agenda. Obvious but so often overlooked.

Notes:
- Think about the leaders you admire. What sets them apart? Chances are, it's their communication skills. Great communicators naturally rise to leadership because they have the ability to articulate a clear vision, inspire action, and motivate others. These are the people who can make their message resonate, whether through quiet strength or infectious energy
- Each leader communicates differently, in a way that feels authentic to them. It’s not about following a script – it’s about speaking from the heart. When leaders are genuine, people listen. That’s the key to powerful communication: being true to yourself
- What sets great leaders apart is their ability to communicate authentically.
- Authentic communication helps build trust and credibility with teams, stakeholders, and the public.
- A study by Bates Communication found that to be perceived as an authentic and powerful leader, you need to project integrity, vision, emotional intelligence, clarity, and follow-through. To do this effectively, leaders need to be open and share a bit of themselves, being vulnerable when necessary. This authenticity is what earns the trust and loyalty of their teams.
- The key is to view your communication abilities as assets. Start by assessing your communication style – ask for feedback, listen carefully, and look for opportunities to improve. Every chance to speak, whether it’s a weekly meeting or a high-stakes presentation, is a chance to refine your skills and grow your influence.
- Secret number one: talk about big ideas. Every speech or presentation should center around one big idea. Big ideas stick with people and have a life of their own. You don’t need to overcomplicate it.
- Secret number two for impactful speeches is to speak in the moment. While preparation is crucial, the moments that often resonate most are those that feel authentic and timely. Look at leaders like Barack Obama – he had prepared speeches, but his off-the-cuff remarks often captured the moment’s emotion.
- Secret number three is this: keep It simple. Complicated messages get lost. When your message is simple and clear, it’s more likely to be remembered and acted upon
- Employees want leaders who are transparent, even when the news isn’t good.
change the above so that its more about leadership teams
- People follow leaders who can balance realism with optimism, inspiring them to believe in better outcomes.
- secret number eight, which is to stand for something. As CEO, you are the embodiment of your company’s mission. Every word and action should reflect that. When you stand for something meaningful, people will rally behind you

Speeches:
- Start with a story. One of the most effective ways to captivate an audience is by telling a story. It should have conflict, suspense, and detail that naturally introduces your topic. Don’t be afraid to share something personal – it helps the audience feel connected to you. But avoid making yourself the hero of the story. Instead, focus on how the experience shaped your perspective. This balance keeps you relatable without coming across as arrogant.
- As well as having a story, you’ll need to talk about your audience. A great speech isn’t a monologue; it’s a conversation. Show your audience you’re speaking to them, not at them. Reference their city, their company, or their contributions. If you can, mention specific people or projects.
- Facts can also add weight to the message in your speech – as long as you bring them to life.
- Use words like "you," "yours," "ours," and "us" to show the audience you're on the same team.
- Phrases like “The most valuable lesson here is” or “It’s important to clarify” cue an audience to pay attention to your next point. Flags are especially useful when you want to emphasize a critical message.

Suzanne Bates' "Speak Like a CEO" emphasizes that powerful communication is about authenticity, clarity, and connecting with people. Great leaders, Bates explains, rise through their ability to inspire, motivate, and express their vision naturally. She argues that true impact comes from finding one's unique voice and communicating with sincerity, which builds trust and respect among teams, stakeholders, and the public.

Central to Bates' approach is the idea that leaders communicate in a way that feels real to them—without following a strict formula or script. Instead, they find their personal voice, speak from the heart, and adapt their style for different contexts. This authenticity, Bates notes, is what enables CEOs like Mike Eskew of UPS to foster genuine connections through daily conversations, meetings, and media engagements.

Bates outlines eight key communication strategies used by top leaders:

1. Focus on Big Ideas: CEOs communicate around clear, powerful concepts, like Abraham Lincoln’s emphasis on liberty in the Gettysburg Address.
2. Speak in the Moment: While prepared, impactful communicators allow room for spontaneity, as seen in Barack Obama’s ability to capture moments authentically.
3. Keep It Simple: Clear, straightforward messages resonate more deeply than complex ones.
4. Be Honest: Transparent communication builds trust, even when the news isn’t good.
5. Stay Optimistic: Balancing honesty with optimism inspires confidence.
6. Look to the Future: Leaders guide by highlighting shared goals and what lies ahead.
7. Be Relatable: Authenticity and humor break down barriers and foster connection.
8. Stand for Something: Leaders personify their company’s mission, making every message meaningful.

Bates also discusses essential skills for giving speeches, leading meetings, and handling media engagements:

- In speeches, CEOs use storytelling, humor, and personal anecdotes to connect with their audience. They keep messages simple and relatable, often using analogies to explain complex ideas.
- For meetings, Bates recommends a clear, concise agenda, balanced participation, and flexibility for productive discussions. CEOs should foster diverse input and know when to step in to guide consensus.
- In media interactions, Bates advises on techniques like “flagging” key points and using “bridges” to steer conversations back to core messages. She discourages “no comment” responses, instead suggesting open, but controlled, communication.

Overall, "Speak Like a CEO" offers a roadmap for leaders to communicate with purpose and integrity, turning every interaction into an opportunity to inspire and guide.

Page 48: Don't wait - your time will come. If you want to lead the company, you should never underestimate the importance of public speaking. You will be judged by the way you handle the hot seat. The judgement day isn't six months before they decide to make you CEO. Judgement days happen all along the way. Be ready long before you have to be ready.
Page 49: At the CEO level, clarity is king/queen. Respect yourself and your audience by taking time to think it through before you get there.
Page 61: "What do you really believe in or feel passionate about? It doesn't hurt, once a year, to take time to write down the things that really matter to you. Your beliefs are your core, and when you allow others to see those inner beliefs, you win friends and build trust. Sharing your beliefs is one of the most authentic things you can do."
Page 61: "I don't worry about being liked. The most important thing in life is not being liked. The most important thing is being true to who you really are."

Page 87: You should also have a good chemistry with a coach, speechwriter, or trainer. Coaching is a personal endeavor. Share your concerns honestly with candidates and see how they respond. See if they are constructive and still candid. You want support and honesty in equal parts.

Page 93: ...One caution: avoid making yourself the central character of the first story. That can come across as arrogant or self-centered. Speaker, author, and storyteller Marcia Reynolds taught me, "In the beginning of your speech, you have not yet earned the right to focus on yourself."

I'm reading this book 14 years after it was written. It was written in an era where there was no social media or internet queries to respond to.

Despite all that, the principles remained the same for speaking well to an audience. Susan shared timeless principles on speaking confidently and well. The gist is that one must never skin on the preparation involved.

Since this book, many more have been written reflecting the current practices and environment we are in.

Good read for anyone wanting to revisit the past and understand the key principles to speaking well.

This first chapter uses a few compelling examples to build the argument that to be a good leader, you must be able to communicate clearly to those who need the information that you have. The outline of the top 10 assets of a good leader I found better serving than the individual survey answers that were used to build the argument. Overall, it provided a sound argument and provided the motivation to read on...
