HE CONQUERED HER LAND, BUT WAS FORCED TO FIGHT FOR HER HEART

When Guy de Montgomery's Norman army swept across the countryside, claiming all in its path, the fairest prize of war was the lovely Lillyth of Godstone Hall. But the gallant lord was so captivated by the green-eyed beauty with the flaming red hair, he knew he had to win her heart.

He was challenged by both friend and foe for the enchanting Lillyth. And Lillyth could not help but fall in love with the fiery lord who protected her from the brutality of others. In the warmth of his embrace she discovered the exquisite beauty of love's passion.

Even as the lingering hostilities threatened to keep them apart, Lillyth knew that her heart had been won more surely than the land. And the conqueror, too, had become the hopeless captive of a woman's love.

This book has all the potential to be enjoyable, but you know, it was written about 40 years ago, so a lot of things are a bit of outdated.

The hero is an abuser. He hurt the heroine like slapping her in the face, making she bleed, then he begged for her forgiveness, like wtf, I should have stopped reading when this happened, but no, I continued. And the heroine slept with the other guy and lied to the hero's face when he asked her about it in the last chapter. The hero was the same. He slept around with many women just after the heroine left him. Ok, I should have used to this kind of story from Virginia Henley, yet I'm sitting here, writing this review with a thought that it's unacceptable.

I've read a lot of Henley's books before GR. Her style is to the point and seems almost barbaric after reading a lot of the modern fluff historical romances. The men are ALWAYS ALPHA. SEX is graphic and in abundance. VILLEINS are swiftly taken care of even though they shadow the plot. You'll always come away very SATISFIED. I was very shocked towards the end of this book. It's a first (for me) that a heroine.........

......you have to read the story.

Premise: Lillyth is married against her will to a buggering rapey son of a female dog, who leaves her bleeding on their wedding night, then rides off the next day to meet the Normans who have invaded. Guy de Montgomery is a Norman knight in service to William the Conqueror, who comes to Lillyth’s family estate after they get the news that all their men are dead. The women see the wisdom of surrendering, and Guy claims Lillyth.

Natch, she comes to love him even though he's a rapey bigamist who hits her.

i absolutely loved this one though i read it 2 years ago and disliked it. i love a besotted hero when i see one and guy was more than dat. he loved lilyth madly. she was one stunning heroine and men fell over her left and right! she was divine! i dilsiked the fact dat guy did not tell her he was married before making love. it shud have been her choice. the book lost one star for me when she whored herself to robert. der was a difference wid guy bcoz she loved him. she did not love robert and i felt disgusted each time he wud tell her she shud let him and she wud acquiesce.

To me, it has been just one of the worst romance I have ever read!!!! I hated Lyllith so much that I was desperately hoping that when she returned to Guy, after having spent weeks in the bed of another man, he would have had the spirit to slam the door on her face......

Considering that Henley wrote one of my favorite book, The pirate and the pagan, plus other beloved books such as Tempted and Enslaved, it was astonishing to read such a book!

I read this book a few years ago. I still remember thinking that Guy de Montgomery was the ultimate man.....he had me feeling all dreamy and goofy....GOOD GRIEF.....it's just a book and I don't even really like romances that much....giggle! Guy and Lillyth had a great love affair that was tempestuous and bold along with being tender and loving all together. It was a fun book to read.

Talk about two unappealing people! If you like your so-called romantic couple to be self-centered and immoral, then this is the book for you. (It's NOT my cup of tea, but I forced myself to drink, hoping it would taste better; ended up rinsing my mouth out.)

Guy and Lillyth are in a contest for worse behavior. They have no chemistry, the love scenes (or rather, sex ones) are boring and so are their repetitious arguments. Their moral standards hit the sub-basement: he's a married man with daughters, but neglects to tell her, instead "marries" her so she won't be labeled his whore. He wasn't the only one married, as her "late" husband turns up alive, but no problem, she kills him! True, he was a whip loving, butt f---ing mess, but Lillyth rather enjoyed feeling his man parts before she repeatedly stabbed him to death. Guy had no problem with the murder (she skipped the sex play part) as he had killed lots of people. Charming couple!

To add to the "charm": Lillyth's constantly jealous of other women, so she constantly flirts with other men. Guy gets jealous and slaps her around. Soon enough, they're back in the sack, then it starts again. They fight and f--k, and so on. Then, when she discovers the truth about their "marriage", she immediately retaliates by trying to abort their baby by downing herbal berries. when she can't go through with it, her mother does it for her, by fixing her some baby killing tea! (It's obvious where Lillyth gets her warped character from.) Lillyth calls Guy all kinds of names, Guy calls her a baby and husband killer (I thought he was okay with her croaking hubby #1), they separate, he takes time out to rape her, she runs away, hooks up with an older man, despite being pregnant with another of Guy's kids (this one she keeps, she just f---ks the old guy with younger Guy's kid inside her. GROSS!!!) Guy goes on a sex spree and (to use an ancient quote) dips his pen in many inkwells. When they eventually get back together for the obligatory HEA (WTF!!!), he neglects to tell her about his sexcapades and she lies about the old fart.

Charming couple! They sure deserved each other! If the second kid knew who his parents would be, he'd have downed those berries and aborted himself!

Skip this one, you won't regret it.

I have read so many 'Regency Romances' that they've made me overly sensitive to 'Medieval Romances'. I've been conditioned to think that it is scandalous for a woman to remove her gloves before a man, so reading about a man sodomising his poor wife on their wedding night was quite a shock.

I don't think that there is much to say about the plot. It was simple enough, but it undermined itself constantly and so made it hard to really enjoy. It was a romance novel, but the constant 'affairs' and the sleeping around just really undermined the main relationship between Guy and Lillyth. I certainly didn't champion Guy and Lillyth throughout the novel, they didn't seem to want to be together anyway, and they were genuinely horrible people.

Guy de Montgomery seemed like the perfect hero; Tall, dark and handsome. A brave, commanding warrior. But throughout the novel his chacteristics changed and he turned out to be a bigamist who fake married his new English girlfriend, hit her when she didn't please him, and whose general mantra was 'If she doesn't let me, then I'll just force her!'

You can read this next line with as much sarcasm as you'd like... What a man <3

Should we therefore feel sorry for his English Rose girlfriend? No, old Loose-lips Lillyth was just as terrible as Guy. She was so instable as a character, innocent then seductive, naïve but then manipulative, she loves no other but Guy but she cheats on him constantly…. She was so deeply unlikable as a character.

I'd only just started this novel when my husband asked me if it was a good book, and I actually said, I don't think that I'm going to like it and I'll probably stop soon. I did make it to the end, because I found the writing compelling, and while I didn't like either Guy or Lillyth, I enjoyed the telling of their story.

Overall I was a little sadistic with this novel, hating the characters but enjoying the telling of their story. I genuinely do not think that this should be classified as a romance novel, just Medieval Fiction. The romance was undermined so often that even the characters didn't seem to want to be together. It was just a really brutal, very sexual novel set in Saxon England. Let's leave it at that.

This Virginia Henley book is shorter than most of her others, but it is still fantastic.

I enjoy the connection between the two main characters. I like the tension, the slow build to trust, the fragility of the love.

With each reread, I find myself catching my breath and eagerly devouring the words like it's the first time.

A full five stars.

Recensione di Teresa Siciliano per il Blog di Babette Brown.

Un libro strano * *

(#copiaacquistata)

While I enjoy Virginia Henley I just didn't understand Lilith as a character. It was like she went from idiot to woman, to seductress, to temptress to idiot again. It was like the lines just didn't match the character. It was my least favorite henley book so far but a quick read even though this wasn't the edition I read it was a red cover and longer than 285 pages but still the same book maybe longer version not sure.

A really good historical romance set in 1066. This is the first time I've read one set in that time frame, usually I read the ones set in the Tudor era. I enjoyed reading about the conquest and the relationships between the Normans and the Saxons.

I must say that I am quite disappointed with this one. It's supposed to be historical romance and what the heroine did totally moved this book out of that genre.
