I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

The Psy-Changeling series is one of those series towards which my feelings are extremely mixed. On the one hand, I’m curious to see how the story plays out; on the other hand, I’m not as invested in the series as I am other paranormal romance series. It’s certainly fun for the occasional easy read, and I can understand why they are so popular, but they are not the kind of books I could binge read across the space of a couple of weeks – as I have been known to do with other series.

For me, the books are a mix of three-star and four-star ratings. Book one, Slave to Sensation was a rounded up three-point-five-star rating; book two, Visions of Heat, was a three-star rating; book three, Caressed by Ice, was a four-star rating; book four, Mine to Possess, was a rounded up three-point-five-star rating; book five, Hostage to Pleasure, was a three-star-rating.

The stories certainly leave you wanting more, and I will continue the books to see what happens next – I simply doubt I will ever label this one of my favourite series in the genre.

I have never come across an author that completely fails at writing the genre that her books are actually categorized as, yet writes aspects of other genres so well. If I were rating on the writing quality of the romance element, these books would get one star. However, if I were rating solely on the sci-fi aspect, and the conspiracy-laden, dystopian, thriller-esque elements of the overarching plot, these books would be an unequivocal five star read.

There were so many times when it felt like the romance aspect in this series was written separately from the rest of it, and just got smashed into the books--and by a piss poor editor, at that. The flow of those scenes and dynamics into the rest of the story was awkward, at best. At worst, it felt like you were were being slingshotted between the two elements of the story, because the placement made absolutely no sense.

I really wish there was a way for me to take out all of the romance in this book--literally every single bit of it--from the dialogue between the characters, to the chemistry, to the cringeworthy, repetitive verbiage used in the scenes, to the entire relationship dynamics themselves, were so poorly written that it completely detracted from what actually makes these books extraordinary, which was the storyline.

I would say that out of the first five books, the best one, by far, was number three (Judd/Brenna's book). However, none of these books are standalone, and you do have to read all of them in order to understand the overarching plot; which, unfortunately for me, is the only thing I find interesting about this series. In fact, it speaks to just how compelling the plot and world-building is that I have continued as far as I have, and will continue slogging through, despite the fact that I'm either rolling my eyes, cringing, or bored for half of every book.

I know these came out in the early 2000s, but the writing quality of the romance in these books, falls in line with every single cheesy stereotype that kept me from reading this genre, for so many years. I know Nalini's been writing for a long time now, and I'm literally reading the very first books of her career, so I'm hoping that the higher reviews that I see for her later books actually holds true, and that the rest of her writing gets better.

frustrating but good

This is five books. Great world building. Convincing characters. Interesting plot. Fun to read. Snarky dialogue.

BUT… it’s the same plot for all 5 books. So it kind of drags after the first book.

And, a pet peeve, the romance is entirely dependent on the fated mate meme, which means no developing romance, only decreasing resistance to an already determined relationship. Not my idea of fun.

Loved these in paperback, got friends hooked on this series, needed to re-read them as ebooks!

This is a one of a kind Universe!

Slave To Sensation -- "The Psy are perfect in their Silence."

This is the book that launches an incredible series. The world building starts here, with the Psy having spent the past 100 years perfecting the Silence protocol which locks down, and out, all emotions. They are the logical, rational beings, neither human nor changelings, Psy can do things with their minds that other beings fear. Sascha has the potential to be a powerful Psy, but her power has never been realized, blocked for some reason, with no discernable ability, it appears she's flawed and will never rise in the political hierarchy her mother has reached the heights of.

Lucas is an Alpha, the DarkRiver pack knows their leader will fight for them, would die for them, and will go to any lengths to protect them... but does Sascha truly understand the danger she risks doing business with him.

This done in one book is as riveting a page turner the second and third time through as the first. In human form Lucas' panther shines through, whether it is in his physical movements, his tendency to view others as predator or prey, or how the importance of Pack informs so much of his life.

This may be my all-time favorite shifter/changeling series, and I love how Lucas and Sascha kick it off.

Visions of Heat - "Instead of the saviors of innocents, they became the most powerful tools of many a Psy enterprise."

Faith has visions of the future... and just as she was taught, she can see how businesses will do, what inventions will work and be popular. All are visions are highly profitable. Until the day she glimpses something else entirely, and can't help but try and understand what's going on.

Vaughn is drawn to the isolated home of a lone Psy. Well guarded, and protected, he comes to wonder if they're shielding her from the evils of her world, or caging her for reasons all their own.

This done in one is a fantastic story. Two characters who understand pain, loss and isolation find themselves reaching for one another -- even as they aren't sure they can handle the contact, the risks of emotional pain, and the reality that they come from different worlds that have valid reasons for not trusting one another.

Caressed by Ice - ..."the Arrows are a myth, a legend,"...

Judd gave up his life as a Psy to protect his extended family. Now he's discovering something even more dangerous than the threat to his family... a lovely lady wolf who dares to make him feel.

Brenna was tortured by a monster, but she's determined to not just physically recover from her wounds, but to recover her life. Oddly it is Judd, the Psy whose emotions are locked down by Silence, who makes her feel safe, strong, capable, like she can ask him anything and he'll give her the truth... but can he give her what her changeling heart most needs?

This book builds on events in the first book in the series, and has appearances by characters from the first and second book. One of the fantastic things about the world building in this series is the community of characters that is built. We get to know, and recognize, the Psy Council, as well as key figures in both changeling packs.

Mine to Possess -- "I will fight for you. But you have to fight, too.”

Each book in this series is a step up from the previous book, in every way. There is a beauty to the writing that makes these a pure pleasure to read, and re-read, the changlings sense of pack, their use of skin privileges, but perhaps most special of all is the way their animals shine through in their 'human' interactions.

Tally and Clay were best friends as children... but life tore them apart, and the emotional scars kept them apart. Now Tally needs Clay's help. As the two work together to save the lives of children who doubt anyone else even cares, much less is fighting for them, Sascha Tamsyn, and the pack work to not only help these two on their self appointed mission, but to heal as well.

Tally gets a lesson in what it means to be Pack, and every time she learns something new, with every step forward she takes, her wounded soul can't help but pray, this time the Universe will let her keep her possessive cat, and give her the strength to stand beside him.

Hostage to Pleasure -- "Ultimately, prisms create their own truths."

Dorian's first encounter with Ashaya, in the previous book, left him confused. Why would a scientist fully enmeshed in the Silence protocol (ie living a life without emotions) help rescue two human children from the Pay lab where they were being experimented on? Now that their paths have crossed again, he's not just confused by her, he's curious enough to want to put the puzzle pieces together.

Ashaya has spent years convincing her fellow Psy she was Silent, but now her life is reaching a point where things have to change. Part of her wants to embrace the possibilities, the rest of her knows the cost of giving up Silence is too high.

3: Caressed by Ice
Brenna Kincaid (Snow Dancer Wolf) and Judd Lauren (Tk-Psy)

Triggers: child abuse, s**ual abuse (in the past, referenced but not re-lived)

5: Hostage to Pleasure
Ashaya Aleine (M-Psy) and Dorian Christensen (Dark River Sentinel and sniper, latent Leopard)
The woman who saved two children asked for one favour, save her son. Dark River sniper, Dorian, does precisely that, and is surprised when Ashaya Aleine herself appears several days later.
She and her son are being hunted by the Psy, because of what she knows, and what she can do. Dorian finds himself driven to keep her safe.

These make up the first five books in the ongoing Psy-Changeling world, and it is interesting going back and re-reading these again from the beginning. Certain factors we’ve seen in more recent books are actually rearing their heads in the early books, and with the knowledge of some of the characters who feature in later books, it’s interesting to see how they’re portrayed in these books.
Each book centres around a different couple, but it’s all set within the same world, against the ongoing backdrop of the rapidly spiraling Psy race. Reading the books as an omnibus edition actually makes it much easier to see these background arcs evolve.

This is an enjoyable way to read the series, and as always, the books themselves are entertaining and enjoyable reads. They’re good, sometimes with morally grey characters, and with a bit of a darker slant to them. They would appeal to readers of darker fantasy, darker thrillers (if you also like urban fantasy), and of course Paranormal Romance.

The premise behind these books - that humanity has been split into 3 interconnected races, human, changeling (human/animal changers), and Psy (humans with psionic powers of various types) - is fascinating, made more so by the interactions between the groups. However, as a set, these books all have the same basic storyline - non-changeling meets changeling, realizes they are meant to be bonded mates, spends volume reaching bonded mate status, with a fair amount of sex thrown in. This repetitive theme is saved by the overall changeling/Psy conflict that runs through all five interconnected volumes. While I don't mind gratuitous sex, these books could have a wider audience if there was less emphasis on soft-porn descriptions of sex and more on the storyline; it would also help if it was more apparent from the beginning that these five volumes are all really one novel told from the point of view of 5 major characters.

I only read the first book, "Slave to Sensation" before DNF the omnibus. It was an extremely trite handling of an interesting premise. Out of curiosity I looked up that volume's publishing year (2006) to grant that it may have fit that time.

The unforgivable, though, fault was the aloof Psi woman allowing the panther changeling to have his hands all over her right from Day 1. The author was using it to demonstrate the MC's "seductive" literal touchy-feely-ness but even any Human female in a formal, professional business relationship would not let a new business partner start handling her hair braid, much less a high-ranking Psi female. It was complete cognitive dissonance to constantly beat the drum on how cerebral and uptight her culture was and then allow this idiot to run his finger down her cheek.

Where do I begin

Singh Singh Singh. I’m always transformed when I complete her books. Always scrubbed anew and reborn in a hope that is tender light. PsyChangeling has it all: extensive sci fiction, sensual fantasy, incredible heroes and heroines, devastating enemies and a suspenseful plot that gives each character a story to tell, and a mark to make. She’s a composer to a wonderful literary symphony.

I can’t wait to reread this whole series after I complete the first lap. It demands a reread! And I’m happy to oblige.

I have heard about these books a million times so I finally decided to dive in. I've been intimidated by the sheer number of books and didn't know where to start so why not the beginning. The world is well constructed and described without being so staid that there isn't any expansion to look forward to in further books. The introduction of the races is well done and it was nice to meet a variety of secondary characters whose background/romance/book are hopefully coming.

A collection work having.

Singh's psy-changeling series is exciting, romantic and an absolute page turner! I couldn't wait read each book, as they are all somehow interconnected. I love how she still focuses on the relationships of the characters from precious novels in the series.

Fantastic World Building!

Ms. Singh has special gifts. Her mind is like no other - she’s constructed a world with characters I care about; they’re real and unique, and their stories are fascinating. And the overarching theme is a brilliant commentary on race relations, the mind, and politics.

If you like to think along with your romantic suspense, read these books!

I thought I didn't like romance books. Turns out I hadn't been reading the right ones.

Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling Series opened my eyes to what romance novels were meant to be. She sets a high bar, with well-developed characters and genuine, ultimately healthy relationships. I've enjoyed her books so much. They'll always be the gold standard for a good romance, to me.

Highly recommended.

I enjoy Ms. Singhs writing, but there's a lot of mental health ableism in these books.
