Doctor Who Novellas: Rip Tide

Rate this book
Unsettling things are afoot in a sleepy Cornish village. Strangers are hanging about the harbor and a mysterious object is retrieved from the sea bed. Then the locals start getting sick. Could this have anything to do with the alluringly beautiful Ruth who local lifeboatman Steve has taken a shine to... or could the other stranger, a man calling himself the Doctor, be somehow involved?

Louise Cooper was born in Hertfordshire in 1952. She began writing stories when she was at school to entertain her friends. She hated school so much, in fact—spending most lessons clandestinely writing stories—that she persuaded her parents to let her abandon her education at the age of fifteen and has never regretted it.

She continued to write and her first full-length novel was published when she was only twenty years old. She moved to London in 1975 and worked in publishing before becoming a full-time writer in 1977. Since then she has become a prolific writer of fantasy, renowned for her bestselling Time Master trilogy. She has published more than eighty fantasy and supernatural novels, both for adults and children. She also wrote occasional short stories for anthologies, and has co-written a comedy play that was produced for her local school.

Louise Cooper lived in Cornwall with her husband, Cas Sandall, and their black cat, Simba. She gained a great deal of writing inspiration from the coast and scenery, and her other interests included music, folklore, cooking, gardening and "messing about on the beach." Just to make sure she keeps busy, she was also treasurer of her local Lifeboat station.

Louise passed away suddenly from a brain aneurysm on Tuesday, October 20, 2009. She was a wonderful and talented lady and will be greatly missed.

I must admit I had not heard of Louise Cooper before, but it turns out she was a well-known writer specialising in YA fantasy (best known for her Time Master trilogy, appropriately enough for present purposes). She lived in Cornwall, and set this Doctor Who novella there. It's a very effective story of the Eighth Doctor, on his own, encountering a human brother and sister and an alien brother and sister, who duly get entangled in the problems of shipwreck - the lifeboat motif is rather well done throughout. I am not always a fan of the Telos novellas, but this one worked very well and I'll keep an eye out for Cooper's other books.

It's a bit hard to review this book...but I'll do so, spoiler free.

It takes a different approach than many Dr Who books.

Firstly, although it's not as "young reader" focused as the BBC books, it's certainly not as adult as the NAs. It's not as fan-orientated as the BBC 8DAs either. It kind of falls between all these different approaches to be it's own unique thing.

It also barely features the Dr at all and focuses on a 17 year old's interaction with him. The "mystery" set in Cornwall isn't too complex but nor is it presented in a silly way and the Cornwall setting and more "realistic" characters and behaviour presented in this tale actually set it apart from some of the far more pedestrian entries in the Dr Who canon.

It's a "different" take on Dr Who, with a fresh approach and interesting characters you tend to care about. Not the most exciting Dr Who you'll ever read but worth a go

A very nice novella, taking place in cornwall and featuring the eight doctor. I had already read a book by louise cooper, and I'm reminded here as to why I liked her prose so much. The book flows easily from one plot point to another, and focuses mainly on the characters. The supporting cast is well written and interesting, and I feel the author really got a good handle on the character of the eight doctor, and that made it a nice quick read!

It is also clear she is familiar with the setting, as she manages to make the little village come to life on paper, and it makes the book feels more grounded.

So all in all, a book i'd recommend!

This is my second novella read from the Doctor Who special editions and I have to say though it was very well done and I enjoyed it, it was a disappointment in comparison to ghost ship. I found it odd that there is no real clue as to which Doctor you are reading about for most of the book. But interesting and at least great as a collector.

A really fun and thoughtful story with the Eighth Doctor and good local characters. I'll definitely read it again.
