The last time Maggie Campbell and Alexandra Blake worked together, they both received two-week suspensions. This time...it's worse.

Ice begins when a boy is kidnapped from a London park and Detective Inspectors Alex Blake and Maggie Campbell are brought together to work on the case. While their goal is the same, their work ethics are not. Intelligent, perceptive and at times disobedient, Alex Blake does what she believes it takes to do her job. Maggie Campbell has a slightly different approach. She believes that rule books were written for a reason.

Unexpectedly, their dynamics mesh, but when her feelings for Alex become stronger than she wants to admit, Maggie provokes the worst in Alex to ensure that they will never be partners again.

Three years later, fate brings them together again. Their assignment is simple, but a plane crash gets in their way. Now, in the middle of a blizzard, they have to try to survive...and fight the feelings that refuse to die.

I have been a writer of fan fiction for several years, and the numerous responses that I received during that time from my readers, convinced me to try my hand at self-publishing. Originally from Delaware, I now call Florida my home, and when I'm not writing or working... I'm playing golf.

My genre is lesbian fiction. Although my books are adult-rated for the love scenes they contain, they are not merely erotica. They are romance based, and inside you will find all the things that make a love story a love story. Attraction, distraction, lust, angst, comedy, and of course, sex. :)

A beautiful love story that’s brilliantly written, with incredible characters and a unique plot.

Detective Inspectors Maggie & Alex have a long not so great history together, which has led to bad feelings between the two for the last three years.

They are total opposites – Alex is stubborn and will bend the rules whilst Maggie does everything by the book.
Thrown together again to work on an investigation, they are forced by circumstances

I loved the development of Maggie and Alex’s relationship. Alex’s strength, courage and never giving up were truly awesome. She’s comfortable with who she is and how hard she tries to handle her feelings for Maggie. She’s engaging, endearing and totally sexy. Maggie has a lot of things to overcome – the attraction she feels for Alex and has been trying for years to deny. And both have to deal with the fear of not surviving and ultimately wanting to live.

I loved the sexual tension build-up and the love scenes were absolutely passionate, sexy and well-written and so believable. I liked that the relationship developed over a time and not immediately.

The family dynamic was another part of the story that I really liked.
Loved the dialogue – the wit and humor is just so English!!! And fabulous.
The epilogue was so cute and endearing. The scene Had me laughing and smiling.

This is such a passionate romance story and one of the better books I have read in this genre. More than just sex, it’s also about how the power of love overcomes the obstacles that face you in life.

I can recommend this book to anyone who is likes emotional love stories.

“Somewhere between hello and you’re not dying on my watch, Maggie had fallen in love with Alex.”

This started out so thrilling. The crash, getting stranded in the middle of nowhere. I couldn't help but fear for the leads safety. But then they got to the cabin and the pace became unbearably slow. For a large portion of the book Maggie was on the brink of death so not exactly romantic. They did have some cute scenes in the cabin but not enough. After they got rescued I lost interest. While this is a romance book I cared more about their adventure than the romance.

Not too bad, this couple survived not only their initial hatred towards each other, a plane crash, the snow storm of the century, injuries and deathly fever. Was there any good news? Yup, they got each other in the end, back safe and sound in London, and a good epilogue.

Man, I had an :o face for the first half of this story because it got so INTENSE. Then, they were stuck out in the freezing elements and Gardner never thankfully let that threat pass. I bow to her awesome sense of setting. I also bow to Alex and Maggie's romantic development. When the frost of their interactions melted, warmth (and yummm hotness) permeated the remainder of the story. I almost didn't want them to return to the real world.

Bonus points to Lyn Garder books for always having nice cover art!

Lyn Gardner, if you ever stumble across this review, I have one question for you. When the HECK are you going to release another novel?!?!?! No pressure or anything, of course. :-) Your books are really a source of joy and uh… warmth, especially on cold winter nights. Readers, if you’ve read any of her novels, you know what I mean. *Nudge Nudge*

Almost immediately after I finished Give Me A Reason, I purchased Ice. True to Gardner’s style in Give Me A Reason, there is an intensity to the storyline and the characterizations. It’s not often that you come across characters that burn as hot as Maggie and Alex do in this story. Both are strong-willed and hard-headed and it adds fuel to the fire of their romance.

Sometimes, it takes a catastrophic situation to bend the will of a stubborn mind to accept and understand what the heart truly wants. Alex and Maggie are thrust into a circumstance that forces them to examine their feelings for each other. Trapped in a cabin, there’s no place to escape for those two. To add another level of complication to those feelings, Maggie has firmly identified herself as a person of the straight-persuasion, whereas Alex is definitely not of that variety nor wants to tangle herself with someone who is not out of the closet. Oh, feelings. Lots and lots of feelings. How the characters navigate through that landscape and find their way to each other makes this an immensely satisfying read. You won’t be disappointed, that’s for sure.

Gardner certainly isn’t shy when she’s writing the intimate scenes between her characters in her novels. Has anyone ever played the fortune-cookie game? You get a fortune, and you add “in bed” to the end of it. For example, I might get a fortune that says, “Good things will come to you”. Just add “in bed” to the end of that, which makes the fortune read “Good things will come to you in bed”. I would suggest playing that game with this novel. It’s a guaranteed good time.

3.25 stars - I was in the mood for a quick angsty lesfic to read on my day off, and this fit the bill. Once I started reading, I wanted to know what would happen next and it was really hard to put the book down, but once they were ~rescued I sort of lost interest. The drama, h/c was pretty much what I wanted it to be, the romance was good, and it has a lot of steamy scenes, but I honestly could've done without the cutesy epilogue - it felt like reading a whole different book.

A great enemies to lovers romance. I always read this book in winter, not every year but still regularly. I read it again just now and loved it again. It has lots of excitement, is well written and the characters are great. I am going to put this book away to read it again in a few years. Recommend.

Now that I've read all Lyn Gardner's books it's safe to assume that she like to write on strong women, I mean typical ice queen with a soft heart.
Ice is been with me for quite awhile now and I'm happy that I finally decided to read it. I think she's my new go to author. I like her writing style.
Both Alex and Maggie got strong personalities and I'm just waiting who will back down first, Enemies to friends to lover. Typical I know but i like the thrill.
The ending was a bit dreamy but I'll take it. :)

(06/01/2021) re-read for this 5 Star book.
I must admit, it would probably be a 4 Star book if it was my first read in 2021. I first read this, I believe in 2014 and 2 or 3 re-reads since then. So it gets an extra star for my enjoyment. I mean, that's why re-read books - or at least that is why I do it. A lot.

I do like the first half best. Their small plane has crashed in the middle of wilderness during the "storm of the century" and its up to Alex Blake to get her fellow policewoman, Maggie Campbell to safety.

Anyway, give it a try. Maybe on the hottest day of the year? I believe it is Gardner's first published book.

It's more of a "stranded together" cop story than a "we solve crimes together" cop story but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the general idea, both the MCs and even though at times it was more of a character study than a story with a plot it was beautifully written :)
Lyn Gardner just has talent and I love her writing style.

I always love some from enemies to lovers trope, even more with two main characters that are strong and accomplished women. Alex enamored me with her temper and her love for her dogs, but later on her skills and relentlessness to save Maggie did it for me. Their banter made the book light considering the rough situation they find themselves in, although the affair felt rushed. Their chemistry is obvious, yet that they were in love with each other from the beginning doesn't feel realistic at all.

This is a light but intense romance staged in a catastrophic situation that brings them together and allows them to examine hidden feelings. A short, sexy, and cute book.

The events that took place in this book came across as far-fetched. One of the MCs caught a bizarre fever out of nowhere that lasted for about sixty percent of the book-length didn’t make any sense and the other main character carried out superwoman activities in her poor condition. Infidelity transpired amidst everything. The ending felt rushed and displayed too much happiness to be convincing as the book contained no tales of the relationship build-up between our MCs. It could have been better if it entailed realistic circumstances.

This book is well written and has great character development. I’ve read it several times and it’s good every time. English police officers clash when working on a kidnapping case. They are attracted to each other, but for one of them, love with a women is not an option (she thinks). Three years later work brings them together again when they are sent to Canada on what was to be a quick round trip. One officer becomes ill and, in spite of bad weather, the other convinces a small plane pilot to take them to a city where there is a hospital. The plane crashes in Canadian woodlands and the women have to survive blizzard conditions. This experience changes their lives in delightful ways. Enjoy!

Not what I first expected from the blurb, and TBH the cover doesn't really give you much insight to the story, either.

It's more a, 'lost and stranded together' scenario, where a plane goes down in the middle of the Canadian wilderness during a bad snow season, and they end up surviving together in a very conveniently well stocked cabin nearby.

Honestly, convenient is really the word I would use. It reminded me a bit of Kim Baldwins Taken by Storm. Only I would suggest that one, over this. I just never really felt any of the drama. I never felt anyone was ever truly in any danger, and their past and connection seemed forced and again convenient.

Both women are competent Detective Inspectors who have strong ethics for justice, and know their place in being part of the process to help victims and put bad guys away - but that unfortunately wasn't the main subject, and I was honestly disappointed that their careers seemingly didn't do much to affect the storyline. I honestly thought I would be getting a crime mystery, police procedure - but it wasn't what happened.

I did like the two mains, Alex is stubborn, gets overly dramatic at times, and skates around the rules. While Maggie is a proper army brat, rule follower. It's a toaster-oven romance, and those are my least favourite.

Maggie thought of herself as straight, until her attraction to Alex has her lashing out, and she also asks the stupidest most cliche questions about her sexuality - until she's ready to jump into bed and she suddenly has no trouble at all.

I felt myself not overly believing or caring a few times, and it went into sickly sweet I LOVE YOU - LETS GET MARRIED AND HAVE BABIES far farrr too quickly for my tastes.

Overall, it was sort of a let-down I guess because I was expecting something else compared to what I got. I'd be interested to read Gardner's other works, though.

Whoo-weee! It's been a while since I added a book to my 'favourites' list.

I sailed through this brilliantly written piece of work. The interactions between the two protagonists were explosive! I was salivating for the next scene, the next word, the next sneer, leer, or snarl. Every story usually has an antagonist, and in this case, the enemy turned out to be the harsh elements battering the two women into submission which in turn, forced the women to examine their feelings for one another. I loved every minute of this book.

5 ice cold, diamond hard stars!

This book has a nice premise, but everything else is either weak or mediocre.

The writing is messed up in places, povs are switched too suddenly, the narrative just can't decide on whether to call people by their first or last names. Expositions are really stale, and dumping expo into characters' dialogues doesnot in any ways make it better.

And that is just minor annoyances, the real beast that ruined the book for me is the romance. I honestly think that making the women love each other before the accident is a bad idea. It's just Lyn taking the easy path there. But leaving bias aside, the women's reconnection isn't that good either. Alex's attraction to Maggie is solely based on her look/ If there was more, Lyn didn't mention it. Maggie's fever is the worst plot device ever. Alex had already done all the hard survivor stuff before Maggie came to her sense(deus ex machina-ly, whatever I guess God heard the prays). So the women never experienced hardship together, it was just Alex facing the hardest parts alone. Yes, Maggie tended to Alex's wound, too. But then they were already fairly safe and comfortable, no fighting storms together here. That is a lot of missed opportunities for heart-wrenching bondings. Don't tell me you don't want a whole sesion of "overcoming hatred to fight storms for survival, saving each other's lives then falling in love in the hashest situations ever". Instead of that, we are given "Alex did the hard part while Maggie was unconscious, hatred cleared easily because turned out they loved each other all along, then it's honeymoon in snow."

Ice could have been so much better than the mediocrity that it is. But that's what sad about potentials, they stay only wishful thinkings.

You know that gif that says ‘it’s not realistic? It’s just not realistic’? That’s how I felt reading this book. Maggie’s fever is not realistic. Alex being able to do all that with her injuries is not realistic. Their wounds being perfectly fine after all that is not realistic. Them being in love with each other for 3 years after working together for 2 weeks is unrealistic. Going from arguing to calling each other sweetheart in a night is not realistic. I could keep going.

I had high hopes for the book based on the premise but I was very disappointed with how it was all developed and written. That paired with thinly veiled biphobia made me not like it much when I was ready to love it.

First completed read for Sapphic September and I am mad and disappointed. None of this made sense, the whole mental gymnastics the author pulled to make two London cops end up in a secluded cabin in Canada was so ridiculous. First, what was the case that made them have to take a plane to a secret location for? That is never mentioned again. Then of course Maggie has a Medical Condition and everytime she has a fever, she must go to a hospital or she will DIE. To save her, they take another plane in the middle of 3 storms to get her to urgent care, but the plane crashes, the pilot dies, and Maggie and Alex are stranded in the storm, find a cabin and survive. By the way, they both worked together for 14 days 3 years ago and Hate Each Other, except they’re really in Love With Each Other, even though there is no chemistry and it makes no sense, but again at this point nothing in this book does.

The writing is awful, the characters are flat, the narration keeps hopping from one character’s POV to another for no reason, we get some unnecessary and random POVs too. I was looking forward to seeing two detectives who hate each other team up to solve a case, but this was just dumb. Alex’s leg was IMPALED, her words, during the plane crash, but she is walking miles just fine and doing all the heavy carrying around the cabin. Maggie’s mystery disease is actually just plot-device-itis, very serious and contagious. And dumb.

I think my biggest issue is not that the plot was so ridiculous but how boring the book was. And the romance sucked, it was literally insta-love and it happened so fast in the book, despite us being told that they’d both been in love for 3 years but acted with animosity towards each other to deny it. Those three years were skipped so we literally didn’t get any of the good romance stuff. BORING!!! This would have worked a thousand times better if this was a second chance, that they were exes reconnecting because at least it wouldn’t have felt so rushed and unbelievable.

Anyway, this was not to my taste but lesbians and the smut was alright, so 2 stars it is, I guess.

4 stars. I read this in the matter of a few hours because once I started it I could not put my kindle down. I was absolutely hooked from page one. It’s a survival romance with enemies to lovers and it was so entertaining.

I really enjoyed the characters and their romance. Alex is an absolute bad ass. I adore her. After the crash she takes charge and does everything in her power to keep a seriously ill Maggie alive. She’s resilient and selfless and loving. Maggie I had to honestly come around to. She was a bit too abrasive for me at first but I ended up really loving her as well. She was in love with Alex but was afraid of what that meant since she herself was straight. I really liked seeing her thoughts and how conflicted that made her. I loved that once she admitted her feelings to Alex that she was all in so there was no unnecessary drama from that. Their chemistry was great and that epilogue was the cutest damn thing ever.

Besides the romance this was great and intense. The crash itself had me absolutely riddled with anxiety. It was nerve wracking. The writing was really good and I think Gardner did a great job with the tone and atmosphere of the story. It’s also paced really well. I have other books by Gardner on my kindle and I’m even more excited to get to them now. This was a hit for me.

This is a very enjoyable story with a good mix of angst, funny, sweet and hot moments. And the complicated situations the main characters go thru the most part of the book are the reason this couple could acknowledge their real feelings.

The interaction between the main characters is simply wonderful no matter the situations they were in. The chemistry between them is really appealing and engaging despite their stubbornness and discrepancies, in fact, I think their personalities spiced the romance and the story up. Also, their relationship was properly developed justifying the growing feelings and attraction for each other. And even though the development could seem a bit slow, I think it was well worth it.

The secondary characters contributed funny, sweet, heartwarming and even some unnerving moments to the story, which eventually added an interesting element to the story, being a relevant part thereof.

The sex/love scenes are really well-done with the perfect elements that allow them to be realistic and engaging, which I think is something I consider an important part of a romance.

To conclude, this is a very nice book that I’m sure you'll enjoy.

What an excellent book! I really enjoyed every page. I was sorry when it ended. Great characters, great story and great chemistry. It was exciting, romantic, funny and sexy. A real page turner! This was the first book I read by Lyn Gardner, but after this book I want more.I'm curious about the book: Give Me A Reason, this book also gets a lot of good reviews. Ice is now in my favorites list and I will definitely read it again. I think the cover of Ice is very beautiful.

Ice is a great example of a story that starts off so strong and intense but turns into a mediocre slump the further you get into it. It is also as if the last 60 or so pages were written by a completely different author.
I adored Alex at the beginning and thought Maggie was pretty cool and even though i still cared about them by the end of the book, it was not as strong.

One of the main elements that took me out the book, that was once intriguing was how quickly the romance developed. Alex and Maggie were attracted to each other when they first met but other than working on a case for two weeks they had not spoken to each other for three years. It was great for their attraction for one another to build up while they were stuck in the cabin together but for them to say that they were in love since the beginning was unrealistic. Maggie went from being appalled that Alex was a lesbian, yelling that she was straight, and emphasizing to Alex how most women look for men, to calling Alex "sweetie" and professionally going down on her the next night. It needed to be more of a slow build up of their relationship and Maggie coming to terms with her sexuality.

It also seemed that soon as the two got together, the dialogue became cheesy:
"On whether you're lying to me about my nose being straight." Placing the softest kisses on Alex's cheek, Maggie whispered, "It's straight, and as soon as you're feeling better, i promise to take very good care of you, in a very non-straight way. How's that?"
description

There were other lines of slightly cheesy dialogue but i didn't feel like finding them.

The epilogue was... kind of cute but it would have been better under different circumstances.
Anyway, make no mistake, i did like this book, especially the first half which was great, but it did suffer closer towards the end and ironically as a romance novel, it was hurt by the romance itself.
