I got about 75% through this book but couldn't finish it. The story goes against everything I believe in, being adulterous and the fact that the adultry is viewed in a sympathetic light. The reader here is expected to understand and cheer them along as they conquer all odds. No. This left a very bad taste in my mouth.
I'm a huge fan of Jane Jackson. I'm just glad this wasn't my first book by her because it would really put me off her other stuff. Jane can (and HAS) done better. Her other books have been clean reads. This one seemed as though it was trying to buck every convention of its time.
A huge disappointment.

Ho-hum Quakers and sea-faring.

Nineteen-year-old Susanna Elliot rebels against her strict Quaker background which alienates her from her family and community. Rejected by the doctor she admires and is refused permission to take her dead brother's place in the family business, she flees to join her two cousins on their mission to China. All three leave Falmouth for Shanghai aboard a schooner owned by Lowell Hawke.
Hawke’s daring exploits have made him a legend along the China coast and Susanna finds herself involved in terrible danger – and love...
Enjoyable read. This is the 4th book of Jane Jackson's that I have read. and hope to read more soon.
