This is a shounen manga about a boy who quickly realizes he has the power to swap bodies with people he kisses. Ryu Yamada is the class troublemaker who doesn’t really take anything seriously, until he accidentally falls down the stairs with the perfect student in class, Urara Shiraishi! And during that tumble their lips touch and their worlds change. But Ryu and Urara quickly realize that this switch up could really work in both of their favors.
But this amazing setup quickly detours into some of the most gratuitous fanservice I’ve ever seen in my life. And, holy shit, there was so much gross disrespect for people’s bodies in this first volume! Like, it was so bad that it was hard to read at parts. Especially when the character Toranosuke Miyamura gets introduced. Like, that dude was legitimately the worst.
And this volume basically centers on Urara and Ryu discovering this power, learning how it benefits them, and trying to keep it a secret from everyone else at their school. But that last one is a lot easier said than done. And at the very end we are introduced to Nene Odagiri who I actually feel compelled to learn more about.
Overall, I really wanted to love this one, but I just disliked it more and more as it went on. I will not be continuing with this series. Also, the biggest question of all: Why are they wearing a witch hat on the cover? Lord, help me.
This was hilarious! I randomly found the first volume on Comixology and decided that I would read it for the 25 days of manga. I was pleasantly surprised. It focuses on two characters who are able to switch places when they kiss. Yamada is awful in school and Shiraishi has a difficult time making friends. When they switch bodies they are effectively able to help each other make it through different issues they are facing. While I think that they original switch places for their own selfish purposes, I can definitely see how this can end up having some romantic elements tied in. The two seem to become friends over time and it's interesting watching their dynamic change as other characters are introduced throughout the volume. I'm actually quite invested in continuing the series simply because I want to know how the witches are going to tie into the series. It makes me believe that this will eventually incorporate paranormal elements, but I'm sure I'll have to keep reading to find out.
This was an interesting concept. A body switching story with some antics as the characters try to keep it a secret. Unfortunately, none of the characters were all that memorable to me. However, I did like that the MC tried to help a girl take on some bullies.
Not: Shiraishi'nin (soldaki kızçe) içinde Yamada'cık.

Ok, my opinion of this book is a bit complicated. I try very hard to just enjoy a book for what it is: art and/or entertainment. That being said, it is difficult not to notice certain sexist/racist/homophobic/etc characteristics found in some stories. As is common with manga, this book has a bit of fan service and sexism in it, but one aspect of the story involves a male character getting to witness some of the harassment that girls and women have to put up with sometimes firsthand and being appalled by it. I'm not saying that makes it better, any more than the fact that it is written by a woman, but I'm just laying that out there. It's a very light, funny, amusing story, though, that is very difficult not to enjoy. I will likely continue with the series.
Quick thoughts: Surprisingly fun opening volume despite some cliches. The characters are well defined and amusing and the body-switching is cleverly used. Would like to read more.
I love Yamada and Urara and their growing dynamic with each other, but the other characters are pretty annoying. I don’t know how long the switching-bodies shenanigans can continue to be fresh, though I do enjoy the focus on gender politics as well. Even so, I don’t think I will continue collecting the series; I hope my library has the other volumes so I can read them if I choose.
A pretty funny story of two very different high school students, a slacker boy and straight A girl, having the ability to switch into each other’s bodies. Plenty of awkward humor, chemistry and promise for how this story will evolve. B+ (83%/Very Good)
I enjoyed this but it was a lot of boys will be boys bs. I like Urara a lot and want to know more about her. I did genuinely laugh a few times at the absurdity of this story.
A cute manga about a guy who discovers (somewhat reluctantly) that he has the power to switch bodies with whoever he kisses.
I look forward to getting the next in the series!!
**And yes, I will note that I disliked Miyamura's pervy actions and that there were a few moments when Yamada and Shiraishi first swap bodies that I can understand why some readers called the events sexual misconduct, but I'm overlooking the fact because I love their interactions and feelings towards one another (Yamada's guilt and his concern for Shiraishi's well-being, and his let down after thinking she likes him then coming to a "realization" that she is merely trying to keep their secret a secret, is all very adorable).

This was fun, the premise was interesting, it was kitschy and that kept the story moving. Was an absolutely in love? No but was I intrigued enough to continue? Absolutely. My lack of love over just liking it could come from the fact that this does take place in high school which I was not clear on going in. Still I was here for the story, who doesn’t love a good freaky Friday moment?
I expected real witches and so far not a single one. The body switching is hilarious though. This series is 28 volumes and i honestly have no idea how it's going to stretch that long, but I'm going to keep reading these until I get bored.
I first heard of Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches from an Anime News Network post. I watched most of the anime series with my brother this past summer, and although I did really like it, at parts the show rushed through material, particularly towards the end. I wanted to read the manga to have the experience of truly getting everything out of Yamada-kun.
I'm glad to say that this was an incredibly enjoyable start to a series that I know will have me rolling on the floor with laughter. Miki Yoshikawa has really created a great bunch of characters with lively art and riotous humor that's both crude, unique, and hilarious.
The story itself is also fairly interesting. Body swapping is something I've rarely seen done, and I've never seen it in a manga series before. The title itself though boasts it having seven witches, something we haven't gotten the chance to see yet. Don't worry, the plot will thicken, my friends, so stay tuned ;).
The characters are the first great thing about this. Both Ryu and Urara (or we could refer to them as Yamada and Shiraishi, as last names are mostly used in this) have a lot of sides to them and are more than just their typical school punk and honor student archetypes. I also am really enjoying Toranosuke despite his obvious pervertedness (his hair, though!) and I can't wait to see what Miyabi brings to the table.
If anyone finds the art to be reminiscent of Hiro Mashima's, that's because Miki was an assistant for him at a point during her career. The similarities are clear, but Miki's art style is much more fluid and bright. The best part about the art are the character expressions and the body language, which change depending who is in whose body. Ryu in Urara's body is my favorite ^_^.
I can't wait to continue the series, and if this is successful, let's hope her first series comes over to US shores soon!
So despite this coming out nearly 4 years before the critically acclaimed "Your Name" movie, there are a lot of elements that seemed to have some shared DNA. Thankfully "Your Name" is still the MUCH superior product so go watch that if you have a chance. (as a plus, it's not an adaptation of a manga, made purely for the filmgoing crowd; sorry if that isn't your jam.) BUT! With that in mind, the concept of body-swapping here has their own rules & noticeably more hilarious shenanigans. Maybe this is all shaping up to be something fascinating & magical, but for now, just enjoy the ECCHI HILARITY!
Especially Shiraishi. I absolutely love her. She's not remotely squeamish (is that the word?) about kisses. She's smart. She's all "whatever" about the body swapping.
Also, kudos to Yoshikawa-sensei for being able to keep all the ticks in her characters, even when they switch bodies. Even if you didn't see them talk, you'd still know who was in what body.
I look forward to seeing the other witches and their "powers"
This manga is “Yamadakun and seven witches” this is love story and fantasy. The main characters are Ryu Yamada and Urara Shiraishi. They can switch bodies with each other!! I’m envy. They have some skills.
Urara is cute. So I like this character. All characters are cute. This manga is interesting.
