Doctor Strange, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, recruits three young witches - Jennifer Kale, Topaz and Satana - to find the mysterious Tome of Zhered-Na, which threatens to destroy the entire world! Featuring stunning artwork by AMAZING SPIDER-MAN penciler Mike Deodato Jr.! Collects WITCHES No. 1-4.
I wanted to like this. Really. But it was a case of bad storytelling getting in the way of an interesting premise and good art. The whole thing was just farted out like one of those shitty paint by numbers coloring books.
The idea behind this was great, though. Doctor Strange enlists 3 young women from various magical backgrounds to save the world from a powerful artifact that has been released into the mystic universe.
One's power is based in the divine, one's power is demonic, and one's power is directly related to the artifact. Their personalities clash while several enemies head toward their end goal, and Doctor Strange can only help so much because of his weakened state. Cool, right?!
Except it's not. The execution is clunky and off-putting with Doctor Strange playing the part of a raging douchebag throughout the entire story. Plus, none of the female characters are in any way likable. They're just bad parodies of different stereotypes. The angry lesbian, the cackling bad girl, and the mousy/meek good girl. And the friendship that they magically find off-page somewhere (because you certainly don't see it happening in the actual story!) will save the day. Pffft.
I saw this while I was pawing through the stuff on Marvel Unlimited and got kind of excited because I love the mystic stuff, and it's pretty hard to find good comics in that setting. Well, it's not hard to see how this one got lost in the shuffle. It's not the absolute worst thing I've ever read, but... Skip it unless you've got nothing better to do.
Witches was a very interesting story. There is an ancient book penned with the assistance of the Devil-Tome of Zhered-na. Only a member of the Kale family can open or use it-but to actually do so spells the demise of all magic users in this existence. Once the book is opened, Dr. Strange recruits three witches to help defeat this danger. The three witches are Jennifer Kale, Satana, and Topaz.
It was rather interesting to see Dr. Strange work with these three witches. Only the character of Jennifer Kale did I not like. Her arrogant, snippy, irritating attitude really spoiled her character for me. Satana, though I am not very familiar with her, is pretty cool. She is Satan's daughter and has some serious daddy issues. Finally, there is Topaz-apparently she is Dr. Strange's apprentice (don't know where she came from).
The story also involves Lillth (the Mother of Darkness), as she decides to cooperate with Dr. Strange as they all try to contain the demon Hellfyre that has been released by the book. This was a good story and it was rather interesting to see the Sorcer Supreme work in tandem with Withces. The artwork is actually really good. So while this doesn't blow anyone away,it does what it is supposed to-entertain.
If you are a Dr. Strange fan or like a good magical tale-I would recommend this for you. If that's not your thing, you can take a pass on this and not miss much.
This had the makings of a good story - with three witches being brought together to stop a monster from killing other mystics, but it was just... badly done, to be honest. It was sexist in the female characters' clothes, there was a tonne of unnecessary girl hate, and for some reason, Doctor Strange was a horrendously sexist twat instead of his usual self. The story itself was also just not done well, and overall it just did not work at all. TW for severe sexism, violence, death, murder, body horror, grief.
A bit of a middle of the road story. I never really felt very invested in the characters or the team they finally became. The story suffers from too much conflict at the expense of a plot. Also it leaves on a cliffhanger. I wonder if this was ever resolved elsewhere?
I am a sucker for any witch comics. I missed this when it came out way back when and gave it a try. The story was fine, but the high point was definitely the artwork. A fun quick read.
