Taking into account that the author essays in this book was written in the 1970's, much of the viewpoints and many unforseen trends have come and went since this book was published. However, it is a transitory time between the golden era of SF and the present. The suggestions to read the classics and the earlier authors is still an important piece of advice.
For a novice like me, especially in this genre, the experts provide useful insight on world-building, alien creating, and future predicting. In addition, the contributors are not shy about providing examples of what they consider to be poor representations of science fiction craft as well as successful models.

I finally found it! After years of trying to remember what it was called. I still don't know what to rate it, though, since I haven't read it in ages and my opinion of it may have changed since then.
