Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
This is the first volume of Case Closed or Detective Conan I have read. I vaguely remembered the anime from seeing some episodes 16 or more years ago. I thought I remember liking it enough. When I saw a volume of this, I thought I would pick it up for a quick entertaining read. I was not disappointed. This volume has three separate small mysteries. The puzzles are logical and the characters are humorous and relatable. This is a fast, casual, fun read. I will pick up more volumes as available for good entertainment.
Meh. It was a mixed bag. Although, it should be noted that the case centered around a domestic abuse incident was just emphatically problematic at every stage.
Volume 76 kicks off with a Detective Richard Moore case for the ages! Moore’s latest client hires him via text messages and then is suddenly dealing with a tied up woman and a “apparent” suicide. As you have learned reading the previous 75 volumes, things are clearly not as cut and dry as they initially seem. On top of all this…Detective Moore’s apprentice (trying to think of a good name to call him) is with them and in the thick of things as well. It really feels like a lot is happening in this volume! Conan…kidnapped! This story is another one that I would think would make a great full-length movie and the story takes the better part of the book to unfold and do the big reveal. The next case involves the Junior Detectives at a BBQ. The married couple seems to at each other’s throats…until that is one ends up with a blade in them! Was this a lover’s spat turned deadly…or was it premeditated??? I find myself again feeling that Gosho Aoyama is creating even better cases in which could be made into full length movies! This second story also fits that bill! The final story is an incomplete one and leaves you on a cliffhanger. The story starts off with Detective Sato getting a message with Detective Takagi (also her boyfriend) being abducted! This one has the makings of being as good as the previous two stories but it all boils down to how it ends, and we won’t know that until volume 77, so stay tuned for more from this long-running series.
This volume has 3 stories that seem to take some crazy turns! First, Mori is hired by someone to find a locker, but when unable to him, Ran and Conan (and Amuro) return to the office to find the client tied up and a make who appears to have shot himself in the head! The Conan is taken hostage by the client, and she uses him to find bank robbers who murdered her brother during a heist. The climax brings Subaru, Amuro and Sera together to help rescue Conan. The next story is of a barbeque where the couple who invited them fight repeatedly, but when it appears the wife is going to murder the husband, something turns the tables and she is critically injured. The ending of that one is disturbing and requires a suspension of disbelief. What happened? The last story ends in a cliffhanger, where Takagi is taken hostage and tied up on a tall platform with a rope around his neck and a bomb! Some crazy stories.
The three cases in this volume were better than average for the recent books, though none were great.
The bank robbery/kidnapping case was about average. It didn't leave much of an impression on me other than that Amuro is involved.
The domestic violence case was a surprise to read, especially since it was a Junior Detective League case. Poor kids.
I've been getting tired of the police cases since volume 40 or so, especially the ones focused on Sato and Takagi. This one is more interesting, though. It introduces some more backstory, including a previously unmentioned police officer. An obvious retcon, but I'm okay with that. I'm already a couple chapters into Vol. 77, and based on that, this case gives Takagi a chance to shine as a heroic character.
This manga edition focuses on two interestign cases the first one is very complex and again an own idea of justice is introduced. The second one is about the police department. I love their cases and when a case is about them. This case gives a whole new backstory to Takagi- so if you are a Takagi fan you should definately read this volume.
It’s an interesting experience to read what I have seen in anime clips on YouTube. If only I had known the case this volume ended on, I would’ve bought the next one along with the others. Sadly, I didn’t and now I wait for the next “haul” that will finally see me caught up on the current US releases.
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
THE BANK ROBBERY’S HIDDEN TRUTH While watching a news report about a recent bank robbery, Amuro visits Kogoro with sandwiches from Café Poirot. After deducing that Kogoro is working on a new case, Amuro joins him, Conan, and Ran to meet the client at Café Columbo. When the client fails to show, they return to the Mouri Detective Agency, where Amuro and Conan discover a break-in. A gunshot leads them to a dead man and a taped-up woman, who later vanishes. Conan cleverly manipulates the woman into revealing the last of the bank robbers, ensuring justice while uncovering a dangerous web of betrayal.
THE BARBECUE BETRAYAL The Detective Boys are invited to the Konno residence for a barbecue as thanks for their help in solving a previous case. Tension rises when the couple argues, and Ayumi witnesses the wife threatening her husband with a knife before the wife is stabbed in the chest. The case takes a dark turn as Conan and the team dig into whether this was an act of self-defense or something more sinister.
THE KIDNAPPING OF DETECTIVE TAKAGI After getting off work early for a mysterious trip, Detective Takagi is kidnapped. The Detective Boys receive a tablet PC showing a live feed of Takagi tied up in a construction site. The police scramble to uncover the truth, tracing it back to Takagi's previous investigations. Sato and the team finally locate the culprit, only to discover he had consumed poisoned wine, leaving behind unanswered questions and a lingering threat.
quote of the day from conan 76 : "jangan berwajah begitu"
Lumayan seru volume ini. Jadi waktu dulu ibu Jodie yang anggota FBI memberi kisikan pada Conan agar berhati-hati terhadap anggota baru Organisasi Jubah Hitam berjuluk ‘Bourbon’, di volume inilah 3 kandidat kuat si penyusup disatukan; Subaru Okiya, Masumi Sera dan Amuro Tooru. Tentu dengan gimmick masing-masing yang mencurigakan. Ditambah Vermouth yang tiba-tiba nongol dan menghubungi Bourbon, “Kelihatannya kamu berhasil mendapatkan kepercayaan mereka. Tapi kamu akan menepati janji kita, kan, Bourbon?” sambil menyeringai penuh arti. Hih! Jadinya agak kudet gini. Ditunggu sajalah berikut aksi-aksi Amuro ke depan.
My appreciation to this volume, for the multi-setting Aoyama Gosho sensei is aware of again, since been very rarely explored but in Black Organization cases, until used quite effectively in volume 74 and then this. I hope that this refreshing technique will be more apparent in the following volumes.
