AN INSANE VOLUME. A TRULY, TRULY INSANE VOLUME. How the hell am I supposed to review it??
"Ichigo Kurosaki. I do not know how you achieved it, but I commend you on escaping Quilge's "Jail". That said, do you truly intend to fight me in that dishevelled state?" "Are you the enemy's leader?" "Enemy, eh? I could say yes, but I could equally say no." "Don't screw around with me. I'M ASKING IF YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR RAVAGING SOUL SOCIETY LIKE THIS!!"
Did I already said that this volume is insane? Because it is INSANE. If I read this volume before watching the anime, my eyes would bulge out of sockets multiple times while reading. Not because of the intense fights, no, but because of all the twists and turns, and the REVEALS. O gosh, the reveals! I remember when I watched the anime (TYBW Cour 1, to be specific) and I played the particular episode happening after the Quincies have already left. My jaw hit the floor with a big boom, because HUH?? EXCUSE ME, TITE KUBO ?? WTF EVEN ??? How can you reveal things like this in such carefree way?? There were big (FRIGGING ENORMOUS) reveals, but also small ones that you could not care about much if you are not invested enough in the story.
Do not worry, I will not spoil anything! Not in this part of the review, at least! ;)
"My deepest... apologies... I failed to fulfil your instructions, Yhwach-sama..." [Royd]
I already had quite a clear picture of what kind of person the main antagonist of the TYBW arc, Yhwach, was, even before watching the anime. But even the news that (unfortunately) reached me didn't prepare me for the pure cruelty of this man. I knew that he used his subordinates like puppets for his own liking and his own interest. That was clear. But I hadn't realized how deeply cruel and ruthless his nature is. It was shown at least twice in this volume where, without blinking an eye, he blown up two dying people's bodies. It wasn't done because of the hatred. It wasn't done because of enjoyment. Yhwach done it just because he could (and because the reader had to see who the heroes are dealing with).
P.S. When we are still on the Yhwach's topic, I have to say that I truly hate him for speaking so mighty about Yamamoto's so-called "weakness". He sounded like Yamamoto's change of character because of the Quincies (and what was not said - because Ichigo's influence) was something to be ashamed for. Something that made Yamamoto vulnerable. BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE. It made Yamamoto realize what's truly precious and all he had done was protecting it. That's not a weakness, it's a strength. But Yhwach will never understand it, because (it looks like) he doesn't have anything precious to protect.
"As a captain of Gotei 13... to be unable to defeat the foul intruders who dirty the soil of Seireitei... Who have brought about the deaths of many soldiers... and brought sadness to those soldiers' subordinates and family... To lose my life in defeat at the hands of such wretches brings me a great shame. You, meanwhile, are a human. By all rights, you should have never become involved in this conflict... Indeed, you should have never even come to this place. Yet now, at the end of my life... I ask you to forgive me the vile hubris of making one request of you. PLEASE, PROTECT SOUL SOCIETY, ICHIGO KUROSAKI." [Byakuya]
If I could let out the cry I needed to while watching the scene in the anime, it would've been heard in the whole building I'm living at (I was alone in my room, sitting in the dark and covering my mouth with my hand to stop myself from screaming my pain out). It left me so shaken up that I couldn't force myself to keep on watching the anime (I came back to it a couple of days later). It was truly painful to get through, not just because of the thing with Byakuya, but also because of Ichigo's reaction. He heard everything. And by everything, I mean EVERYTHING, not just Byakuya's last words. While being imprisoned by Quilge he had been tortured by all the sounds coming from the fighting Soul Reapers - and one of them were people Ichigo treasured the most. He had to hear their cries of pain and feel the moment they had fallen. And when he finally managed to free himself and travel to the Soul Society, he saw an image he had feared the most - the destroyed buildings and bodies lying everywhere. I have never seen him so angry before. He went through so much already, fought many fiends that messed up with him in very dirty ways, but it was Yhwach and the Sternritters that managed to bring him to the most pissed off state. It was a surprising sight to me. It was understandable, of course, but still surprising.
"Ehhhh? The hell are you all doing?" "This voice... Could it be?" "That voice! Is that KUROSAKI?! Kurosaki, you bastard, that is you, isn't it?!" "No, no, no! No Kurosaki in here!" "Don't lie to me! I know what I heard!" (do you all know who it is???)
The first chapters of Volume 58 were focused on the war. The moment the Quincies left the battlefield, the atmosphere had immediately changed and with it I felt like I could breathe again. It's not like the war had ended, no, it just got on hold for a while. The Soul Reapers got time to heal up the wounded, make the funerals for the dead ones and think about a tactic for a next attack. Things don't look good at all. In the contrary. But the mood is lifted, and you can both feel it and see it, not just because of the big amount of funny scenes. Bless Tite Kubo for making a great balance between the serious stuff and the funny things - even in here, in the war arc. It was something I needed incredibly badly after all the pain and trauma I have been through in the previous chapters. You might think that the funny scenes shouldn't take place in a serious arc like TYBW, and that's your right. But for me it was a blessing. It was like the old Bleach came back. It was like a reminder that everything will be alright on the end. Because the good side always wins.
"Squad Zero doesn't have any ordinary soldiers. It has only five members. All of them captains. And what's more, the combined power of those five is greater than that of the entire Gotei 13." [Kyoraku]
Because of Yhwach's retreat, we didn't get to see much of fights that were taking place while Ichigo was imprisoned. We also didn't get to know a couple of Sternritters that were bold enough to attack some of the captains (like Soi Fon, Komamura and Hitsugaya), but I can't say that I'm sad about it. To be honest, the less I see of the fights, the better. I am a person who's too emotional about people and things and I would end up being a mess of tears (I need to be ready for it though, it's only volume 58...). Anyways, in this book we managed to see a couple of entirely new characters (not just Sternritters). I am talking mostly about Squad Zero. I didn't feel any bond with them while watching the anime, so I'm looking forward to see them more often in the manga.
"Sousuke Aizen. Truly, that man is the very embodiment of evil. However, be warned, Ichigo Kurosaki. The evil we now face will surely eclipse even his." [Senjumaru]
We end Volume 58 with Kyoraku facing Central 46, while Ichigo and his friends spending time with the Squad Zero. Will the heroes recover fast enough for round two of the war? How will Gotei 13 manage without their leader? What is Kyoraku planning and how does it involve Unohana and Kenpachi? When will the Quincies attack again? We will see in the next volume!
Things I NEED to talk about: (be warned about the SPOILERS!!) ~ How convenient was for Yhwach that he found people who's power was to imitate others! They died for nothing, like a couple of characters before! ~ Why was Yamamoto so shocked when he realized that he didn't fought with real Yhwach? Why didn't he predict that his enemy has tricks upon his sleeve? He was supposed to protect Soul Society, but all he managed to do was die. He left everyone to meet the same fate. ~ Kyoraku was so cute as a kid!! ☺️ ~ Who was the monster in flames from Yamamoto's picture? Was it Yhwach... or was it Yamamoto himself? ~ Ichigo's entrance was as epic as always! What a power!! 🙇🏼♀️ ~ What was Yhwach's actual plan involving Ichigo? I don't understand what he tried to do. Did he want to kill him and then bring him to his forces or did he want to force him to submission? What was it? And why didn't he predict that Ichigo's true powers will come out? Like dude, you already knew who he really is, why didn't you do anything about it?? ~ I HAD NO IDEA WHO ICHIGO TRULY IS AND I WAS SO SHOCKED, WHAT THE HEEEEELLL 🤯 ~ Why was Jugram so sad when he saw "dead" Ichigo?? 🤨 ~ "Farewell, Ichigo Kurosaki. I will come for you again. So heal your wounds and wait. My precious son born in the dark." - THE HELL YOU MEAN BY THAT??!!!!!! 😨 ~It was so nice to see Hanataro again! I missed him so much! ☺️ ~ "Ichigo... You came to Soul Society to protect us, yes? Thank you..." - Rukia's smile!! 😭 ~ "And off he goes... and already he's worrying about everyone else. He always ends up busy one way or another, that one. He ain't even healed himself up properly...." - Ichigo in a nutshell 😭 ~ "Captain Hirako... Why do you think Ichigo had such a pained look on his face just now?" - RUKIA KNOWS HIM SO WELL, MY HEART 😭 ~ IT WAS RAINING WHEN ICHIGO CAME TO THE SOUL SOCIETY OMG ~ The scene where Komamura shuts up Soi Fon - WE STAN! 👏 ~ Why did Mayuri look like a yellow turtle from behind? 😂 ~ Mayuri knows about Ikkaku's Bankai and told Ichigo so he knows now too, lmao 🤣 ~ THE BIG TOY KON LOL 😂 ~ I knew that it had to be Hikifune from Squad Zero who was the previous captain of Squad 12! She was Hiyori's "mother"! ☺️ ~ How she smacked Shinji, lol 😂 ~ GRIIIIIIIMJOOOOOOOOWWWWWW!! You cannot imagine the scream I let out if myself when I realized that he's alive!! 😭 ~ What did Urahara mean when he said that he has a contract with Grimmjow?? 🤨 ~ WHAT WAS UP WITH ALL THE CUTE SHOTS OF ICHIGO, HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO ME TITE KUBO!! 🤩 ~ THE FREAKING UNCLE REVEAL, WTF EVEN?!!!! BROOOOOOOOOO 🫨 ~ THE FULLBRINGERS!!!!!!!!! 😲 ~ The key to King's palace is whatttt??? 😨 ~ The one Squad Zero guy who's name I don't remember first drowning Byakuya and then tossing him to the water of hell lmao 🤣 ~ We got the glimpse of the Soul King! Who just... awakened? 🤨 ~ Kyoraku new head captain of Gotei 13! Go, Kyoraku!! 👏 ~ THE UNOHANA REVEAL WAS INSANE!! 😨
This arc is off to a great start, we see that Yhwach never really came and he sent some double to assess Genryuusai's strength and when he defeats him its such an emotional scene and then you ave his funeral attended by others while some other captains are gravely injured. Also during this Ichigo confronted Yhwach and he tells him he cannot attack a quincy and when Ichigo is shocked he asks him if he doesn't know anything about his mother hinting that Ichigo maybe a quincy himself. Then we have the division zero come in aka the spirit king and so much revelations happens and such cool stuff happens when they go to the Royal Citadel to heal their wounds and probably Ichigo may gain a new strength. Its so exciting because its been hinted for quite long and finally revelations are happening and its so amazing! Also Hyouraku maybe the new captain commander and well Unohana the new Kenpachi! Its an amazing volume and expands the world of bleach by so much and the art and colors are just marvelous to look at!

Plot twists!! Plot twists and blood shed!! SO MUCH BLOOD SHED!! Or maybe just dramatic slicing and delayed blood that really wasn't shown in any panels. :/ I REALLY should have suspected this at the end of the last volume. I really should have. But I didn't, and yet once again my mind was blown by slightly cliche and depressing plot twists. One more thing before I get into what actually happened; how in the world am I supposed to pronounce the name "Yhwach?" I mean seriously? Out of all the crazy names in this entire series, (also including Haschwalth), and all the bizarre names you could choose, why did it have to be Yhwach? I've been saying it as "Wach", and "Yawak", but I am almost certain both of those pronunciations are incorrect. Even Genryûsai Shigekuni Yamamoto is easier to say than Yhwach! *Sigh*. Well either way, this volume started off more... Interesting, in a completely strange way. Not even related to where we left off, but yet completely involved, we see the past of two brothers, Loyd and Royd. I believe one was killed by Kenpachi, but the other was pretending to be Yhwach the whole time to let the real one meet Aizen. After using much of his power, and having his Bankai stolen from him, (turns out his was steal-able the whole time), he is left with no defense and is slice directly in half. There really wasn't blood, which probably caught me off guard the most. Just looking at the next page and seeing Yamamoto's torso and down standing there and his upper half falling to the ground, (in obvious epic slow motion), I was almost terrified to turn the page. Yes, I guess I do have to admit that I like seeing characters die every once in a while (no I am not sadistic) but when it is a character I actually LIKE, my brain almost has a mini eruption and I am stunned for a couple moments. People watching me read Bleach, be warned, for once I read of a character's death like Yamamoto's an indescribable expression overcomes my face. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. It made me so sad on page 42, panel one. Just seeing the ruins left of majority of the Seireitei makes me feel not angry, but just depressed. I guess I'm not angry because I know there's nothing they really could do to stop it. They did all they could, and yet the buildings of comfort that used to stand are all rubble. Ichigo breaks out of the force field, and since he fought a Quincy, his spiritual energy "remembered apart of itself", and gave Ichigo the ability of Blut Vene. I'm extremely curious to see why Yhwach is so interested in keeping Ichigo alive, but if it ends up that he is Ichigo's real father, this is going to be my exact reaction: -_- "Why. Why are you quoting Star Wars?" Hopefully it won't end so cliche, but you never know with Bleach. (Lol does that even make sense to call Bleach cliche and unpredictable in the same sentence?) Ichigo's mother was possibly a Quincy, or at least that's what I was thinking. Ichigo didn't get to do much of the help he had planned on, and his Bankai was cut in half, permanently damaging it, (that is if he can fix it). Byakuya, Rukia, and Renji all make it, but Yamamoto was killed for sure (

There's a lot of tragedy in this one. It's almost unbelievable. You're halfway between thinking that it's outrageous that the mangaka Tite Kubo decided to do this and sad that some characters suffer so much and you can't do anything about it.
But then the story takes a sudden uplifting and joyous tone by revamping the lore a bit with A LOT of plot twists. Some of them were obvious, others felt inevitable, like the franchise didn't have a choice to repeat a certain formula to try and get things hyped up again.
I'm on the fence about certain things but I'm giving this a good grade in hopes that all the plot armour around certain characters aren't done in vain and there are some interesting things to expect from the stories to come.
Bleach, Vol. 58 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eleven chapters (510–520) of the on-going manga series.
The person Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto battled was actually Loyd Lloyd's twin brother Sternritter "Y" Royd Lloyd as the real Yhwach was visiting Sōsuke Aizen in the underground prison beneath Squad One's barracks in an attempt to recruit him. Acting in haste, Yamamoto loses his Bankai to Yhwach who quickly incinerates him.
Yhwach orders his right hand Sternritter "B" Jugram Hashwalth to pull their forces back as Ichigo Kurosaki finally arrived and makes a beeline towards Yhwach. However, Ichigo is quickly defeated by Yhwach, who damages the Substitute Soul Reaper's Zanpakutō while leaving him with the revelation that Ichigo's fight with Quilge awoke a connection between them.
After the Wandenreich flee and have left the battlefield, the Soul King's' Royal Guard, also known as Squad Zero, arrive and takes Ichigo, Rukia Kuchiki, Byakuya Kuchiki and Renji Abarai back to the Soul King's Palace and even Ichigo's broken Zanpakutō in its bankai state, Zangetsu. Afterwards, the new Head-Captain Shunsui Kyōraku arranges for Kenpachi Zaraki to fight Retsu Unohana, so that he can unlock his Zanpakutō's full power.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. The Wandenreich concludes their attack on Soul Society with devastating results as the leader, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, is killed by the leader of Wandernreich, Yhwach. Ichigo Kurosaki manages to escape his prison and is swiftly defeated by Yhwach as they retreat from their attacks.
All in all, Bleach, Vol. 58 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
This was less disappointing than the last volume but not by much. I'm wishing more and more it had ended with the last arc. There is so much theme recycling in this. The whole 'here's a character's history you've never seen before and makes him/her FINALLY interesting and oops now they're dead.' And there is major character death in here, and too easy and simple of a death.
Renji/Rukia/Byakuya are all almost dead but oops not. Let's do this instead. Let's introduce MORE characters. Really? We're only a few chapters away from the end of everything and let's add yet more characters and another level of the Soul Society that no one knew existed, kinda (apparently there was a mention that I totally missed somewhere along the line).
There is a return of characters not seen in 50 volumes and a little comic relief. And of course we find out Ichigo is even more super special.
What can I say, I'm sticking it out to the bitter end but it's just not really working for me. The only reason it got that third star was this new level of the Soul Society was vaguely interesting.

Some big moves were made story wise in this volume, and all lead up to some very interesting storylines in future volumes. The foreshadowing about Ichigo’s mother, Shunsui being appointed Head Captain, the introduction of Squad Zero, a brief look at the Soul King, the Unohana reveal. This volume marks the beginning to some of the most interesting and exciting storylines in this arc, and I’m excited to see how they all unfold.
Yooooooo, IN HALF? Dang. They did the Captain General dirty with that one.
There are so many tidbits of information teased in this volume and I can’t wait to see how everything ties together in the end. I can feel the series ramping to its conclusion and I’m so excited and so sad about it at the same time.

This latest volume of Bleach literally came out of nowhere, but it had to happen sooner or later. It's one of those events that throw the series' respective universe into absolute chaos for the greater good, and actually succeeds at it. It's on the same level as Aizen's initial betrayal of Soul Society and major character deaths. As certain characters go head-to-head, the result of these fights rock every resident of Soul Society and beyond. This is a must-read volume of Bleach for so many reasons.
Given that Manga, and especially Shonen is split up into bigger arcs as composed to volumes I will be analyzing and reviewing this by Arc. I also reread this manga over the span of 2 months, some days reading as much as 100 chapters a day. It would be quite tedious for me to review each 7-8 chapter volume. So this will be copy and pasted throughout all of the 72 manga volumes. That being said, if you're looking at this without having viewed the series...spoiler warning. I don't recap anything, but I also mention things that happen. If you want me to answer the question "Should I pick this up?" Yes. Even if you stop at the end of the Soul Society Arc. It's worth it.
Karakura Town Arc - Chapters 1-56- Rating: 7/10 (The official page lumps this in with the Soul Society Arc however I feel as if they are two very separate arcs with two very separate themes) - A fun introduction. -An interesting premise on the idea of ghosts and demons (Hollows) -Does a good job of introducing the characters and I especially enjoyed the love for characters like Chad, Orihime and Uryu as these characters would later lose more and more spotlight as the series went on. -It is a bit of a monster of the week. When it works, like with Chad's introduction story. It works. But Characters like Don Kanonji felt superficial and very gimmicky. Which, fair. I didn't enjoy them as much.
Soul Society Arc - Chapters 57-182 - Rating: 10/10 -The height of Bleach -Establishes an afterlife seemingly perfectly. Later on revealed to be full of plot holes and never fleshed out but hey! That's not an issue in THIS arc. The fights are top tier, the themes of Ichigo owing a life debt to Rukia and his passion and determination to rise above literally God's army is inspiring and to this day is why I love Ichigo so much. He doesn't have some grandiose plan. He doesn't have a major goal to accomplish. He is a protector by heart, losing his mother has made him sour to failing to protect those he cares about and he'll do anything in his power never to feel that helpless again. Very powerful stuff. -The twist near the end of this arc is revolutionary and would make waves for the next 200 chapters onward. A perfect ending and set up for the forthcoming arc. -The only issues I have for this arc would be Ichigo's lightning speed progression. The guy goes from being able to barely defeat a third seat to besting multiple captains in roughly 100 or less chapters. I get that that is the point and him defeating captains was more of a struck of luck, but progression and pacing wise it feels very unearned and a factor of "for the plot he needed to be this strong" It only seems as fast as it is because Ichigo's progression slows drastically down for the rest of the story moving foreword so it's only now that I make that criticism. -Also, and this will be an issue in most Shonen. There are 13 Captains with 13 Vice Captains and seats that branch all the way to 10 I believe? Regardless, there's a fudge ton of characters that are introduced here and it can get a little jarring at times. Luckily, Kubo does a great job at making their designs and characters unique despite such a large cast.
Hueco Mundo Arc - Chapters 183-423 - Rating 7/10 -This is another arc where personally I would split it up into two separate arcs. But for the sake of this review I will simply refer to the first half of the arc and the later half of the arc. First Half 9/10. Second Half. 5/10. -The first half of this arc is a great continuation of the last. Ichigo now struggles with his inner demons and it affects his ability to protect the ones he loves. We are also introduced to a deadly unknown new villains. The Arrancars/Espada to this day remain one of my favorite villain factions in all of manga enemies. -Just so you're aware I would say the first half of this arc ends right around the point of Ichigo vs Grimmjow. Grimmjow is one of the first Arrancar that Ichigo faces. And he's also one of two Espada that he faces three times. The conclusion of that fight shows Ichigo conquering his inner demons. Where Grimmjow is very much fighting to establish himself. Grimmjow has to fight Ichigo to prove to his fallen comrades that he is as good as he says he is. He doesn't care about Aizen, he doesn't care about the rest of the Espada. It is very personal for him. For Ichigo, Orohime is within his grasp of saving and he views this as his "final" battle. It's my favorite fight in all of Bleach. -However, this is where things start to take a bit of dip in quality in my opinion. We had a goal and we were striving towards that goal. Each character of the original cast coming to repay the debt they made to their friend who had risked her life to save them in the Soul society arc. But somewhere along the way it seems we just had a fighter fest. Captains would face enemies with no themes or character revelations. The Espadas got a little light but nothing that made their fights compelling. You almost just feel bad for the Espada as they were monsters turned into a military force by an unstoppable tyrant. But even that wasn't enough to make half of the fights interesting. Now, that's with knowing the outcome. These fights played little importance in the larger scheme of things. Where at least in the Hueco Mundo fights each match up had the protagonists striving for a goal. Rukia to defeat Aaroneiro to free her former superiors soul. Byakuya to defend Rukia. Renji and Uryu teamwork. Nel to protect Ichigo and get revenge on Nnoitra. Whereas Stark fought Kyoraku.....cause.....and Hitsugaya fought Halibel because Water vs Ice would be cool. -This leaves me to the end. I won't say it wasn't satisfying that Ichigo was able to defeat Aizen. And yes, I do feel like his new power was earned. 3 months of training. But this was clearly a last minute decision to save Aizen for a later date and the show must go on. I do feel like it wasn't as satisfying as 200+ chapter buildup needed to be.
The Fullbring Arc - Chapters 424-479 - Rating: 8/10 -A very underrated arc. And yes, I acknowledge that rating wise I think the Fullbring arc is superior to the Hueco Mundo arc. That is mostly true. Though I like the first half of the Hueco Mundo Arc more than the Fullbring arc. The end of the HM arc really brought it down for me. The Fullbring Arc is much more concise and is actually the shortest arc in the series and works as a glorified Ichigo getting his powers back arc. But that doesn't mean its bad. -When I read it originally back when it was coming out in 2010. (Cause I'm Old) It wasn't phenomenal. In fact, I hated it. But wouldn't you? It took just short of a year to get to the point that we were at. But upon rereading it, it gave much deserved love to the characters who hadn't been shown love in quite some time. The original cast. It was a very character focused arc. Ichigo never seemed more human. And despite me hating it before for taking so long, reading weekly can sometimes hurt these mystery based arcs. The twist is heavily foreshadowed and I really appreciated it. -That being said, the end was super rushed. This was a big bummer for me. The villains this time around were humans. And the ones who had the most exposure and relations with these characters were the original cast who again....were humans. So to have the soul reapers, who have no connection to the fullbringers show up and basically no diff most of the fullbringers felt very forced and fanservicey to me. This very well could have not been Kubo's call. As the community was very vocal about their dislike for this arc as it was going on. But I appreciate it now much more as I appreciate character and story over big sword fights. Lol.
The Thousand Year Blood War Arc - Chapters 424-689 - Rating: 5/10 -And we're finally here. The final and largest arc within the Bleach story. And man...does it not stick the landing. -That being said, this arc has phenomenal moments. Kenpachi's Shikai and Bankai. Ichigo's double swords. Renji's true Bankai. Rukia's Bankai. And many more. However, they are put together against the most break neck speed arc that I have ever read. Kubo was very ambitious when he introduced 26 new villains. However, most of them got barely any screen time and a lot of them even got off screened by higher level captains. This was unlike the Espada who each got a full double page spread for their Resurrections. -Yhwach himself was a phenomenal villain but was dealt with swiftly and imo dirty. They did him dirty. -There was just something off. The mood changed and it was very apparent. The villains had random powers instead of the powers reflecting their personalities or needs. The finale felt so underwhelming. -Ichigo gets to be the strongest he's ever been....but he doesn't defeat a single person besides the main villain despite being in several fights. -It isn't a good arc. In fact, I would say it's the worst. Hopefully the anime does a better job with this already mammoth of a story. 260 chapters is no joke.
This gives the story of Bleach an Overall rating of 7.4/10. Which to me is above average. It has it's ups and downs. It's not perfect. But when it's high, it's peak shonen. But when it's low, it's very forgettable.
Captain General Yamamoto’s battle with Yhwach is done, the foe defeated. So why is the man apologizing… to Lord Yhwach? Because, as it turns out, this man is a mere double, not the terrible Quincy king. Lord Yhwach is alive and ready to continue the battle. But first he admits that he has been a busy boy, visiting the underground great prison, where he made an offer to Aizen, which was refused. And now the battle is done, and Yhwach instructs his Stern Ritter to destroy the Soul Society!
Ichigo is finally able to break out of the cage he was being held in. He makes his way to what is left of the Soul Society, where a seemingly dying Byakuya begs him to please save the Soul Society. Ichigo comes face to face with Yhwach, who doesn’t want him killed. Yhwach hints to Ichigo about information he doesn’t possess, about himself… and about his mother. He plans to overcome Ichigo and take him back with him. But thanks to a trick of Aizen’s, he is out of time and is forced to retreat… for now. He promises Ichigo he will return, though.
The Soul Society begins to licks its wounds in the aftermath of the onslaught, finally able to bring the wounded indoors. Ichigo visits Rukia and Renji in the infirmary but claims he is fine. The issue is tabled when he learns Captain Kurotsuchi wishes to speak with him. Meanwhile the Captains are in disarray themselves, receiving news that while Byakuya and Kenpachi are alive, they may never be themselves again. Sai Fon is beside herself with fury and grief, and the captain are at each other’s throats, until Shunsui calls for their attention and calmly tells them to stop fighting.
Ichigo is devastated when Kurotsuchi tells him his zanpakuto cannot be fixed, although the captain claims that are circumstances. An unexpected blast from the past shows up, but before Ichigo can fathom what happened, Kurotsuchi announces that the Zero Squad have arrived. Who the heck are they?
Turns out they are five captains whose combined strength is greater than that of the entire Thirteen Court Guards! They’ve come to rebuild the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. But first they want to take Ichigo back to the palace! They have four items on their list that they intend to take back with them – Byakuya, Rukia, Renji, and Ichigo. Just then, Kiskue manages to open communications and Ichigo is happy to see that Orihime and Chad are fine. But then Ichigo hears a familiar voice and wants to know what they’re doing with him. Kiskue blows him off and breaks the connection. When Ichigo learns that the Zero Squad can fix his zanpakuto almost as good as new, he’s more than willing to go with them.
This arc is just getting worse and worse. Captain General Yamamoto gone? Yhwach and his cohorts alive? And now these Zero Squad clowns who seem to think they can do whatever they want? I don’t know if I can survive this arc, it’s so depressing. The best thing in this volume is watching Shunsui step up to do what needs to be done as he becomes the new Captain General. Unfortunately, it looks like he has to give up Nanao and has no choice in the matter. His seconds have been chosen for him. Be that as it may, he has business he intends to get down to, including teaching Kenpachi zanjutsu. He can’t be sure the others will return, so he can’t take any chances. But when he comes face to face with Captain Kenpachi, he is in for a surprise.
What will happen next? More heartbreak or the beginning of healing? I don’t see how, not until the Quincies are dealt with. What’s the deal with Ichigo’s mother? And when will Uryu finally make an appearance. Also, are we going to see Aizen’s return? That’s twice now he’s been mentioned, and I have to believe that means something. Looking forward with trepidation to the next volume.
This volume of Bleach was very much Head Captain-centric, and it was really interesting because we got to see some cool stuff from him. We also learn a bit more about the Big Bad, Yhwach. We kinda find out where he comes from and that was also really interesting. And while I sort of get why the Quincies hate the Soul Reapers and want revenge... I mean, the reapers basically slaughtered them! But it’s just not cool, dude! I do not like! Lol. Even though the whole slaughter thing may have been an overreaction on the Soul Reapers part 🤷♀️
And omg we also get some more info on Ichigo! Like him being a Soul Reaper and Visored wasn’t enough, there’s even more to the poor guy! We get some hints regarding his mom and I’m kind of excited about what those hints are implying! 😱
Speaking of Ichigo, we got some fun Ichigo and Rukia scenes. I really miss them because they’re just so cute! I especially love when Rukia calls him an idiot 🤣 Anyway, here, have a cool Ichigo shot!
And Renji was back there at the end! I’m always a fan when he shows up 🥰 Another guy who showed up was Kon, and I can’t say I missed that little punk. Lol. As for the other Soul Reapers, well a bunch of them are injured and a handful of them lost their Bankai and I still can’t believe it! 😩 And then there was one major death in this and I was honestly surprised! Like, wtf! 😢
In this volume we are also introduced to Squad Zero which was very interesting. I don’t think they’ve really been mentioned in the past, so meeting them was pretty cool. Each of the five members has their own little castle in the royal palace, Reiokyu, which was also really cool to see. I’m excited to explore more of it in later volumes!
There was this super crazy plot twist there at the end that I did not see coming at all and I NEED to talk about it! Especially considering who this character is!
This volume was SO good! I enjoyed seeing Reiokyu and seeing what it’s all about and what they do up there. This is definitely only the beginning so I’m excited to see what else there is. Also, that plot twist and cliffhanger at the end... I need to know more!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

4/5 (Review is for the series as a whole and does not contain spoilers)
Ichigo Kurosaki is a high school student who can see ghosts. When an evil spirit, called a hollow, attacks his family, he meets Rukia, a soul reaper tasked with fighting against hollows. But when Rukia is injured, Ichigo must make the decision to take over the role of soul reaper to help fight against hollows to save his hometown.
Bleach is a classic manga and one of the more popular options for those starting out in the genre/format. It features themes of friendship, growing up and changing, and never giving up. One of the most enjoyable elements of this series is watching the progression as the characters learn and evolve. Ichigo has a tendency to be really cocky, especially at the start of the series, but as time goes on and he learns more about the world he’s in, he changes and becomes more willing to listen to the advice given to him by other characters. His friends also continue to grow and progress along with him. Additionally, there is a change in the art style of the characters as the story progresses, which makes it easy to see how they have changed as they all get older. There were two elements about this series that I disliked. The first was that I felt the ending was a bit rushed, and there were some things that I was a bit confused about. However, I recognize that the author was sick and so that attributed to the way things ended. The other element that I disliked was the sheer number of characters in the series by the end. Many of the characters that I thought were dead or gone ended up coming back, and I had to try and remember who they all were. I definitely think I needed to make myself a character sheet with information about each character to help me remember everyone in the end. In terms of assessing age appropriateness for this series, I would say that it’s an okay series for middle school and up. A couple of considerations to keep in mind when deciding if it’s right for you: 1. There is some violence (which is common for shonen mangas), including some elements of body horror, but it’s not too bad. 2. There is no sexual content, although many of the women are drawn disproportionately (which is common in manga written by men). 3. The main character is fifteen years old at the start of the series and only gets older as it progresses. And 4. The themes are a bit mature in that they require some deeper level thinking in order to fully understand them all. Overall, I enjoyed this series for its interesting premise, and would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy the traditional shonen manga.
I already knew about what was going to happen in the beginning of this volume thanks to spoilers when this chapter came out years ago, thanks people who can't shut up for a few weeks after something new has released or put a spoiler warning😑 But I was still emotional reading this.
It was so satisfying seeing Soi Fang being on the receiving end to how she behaves to everyone else. I was also surprised that she was so affected by the deaths and destruction considering her personality, but I should have expected it since usually the character or characters who act so tough are the ones care so much in not just anime and manga, but other series as well. Look at Hiyori from the arrancar arc, she was the most upset from what Aizen did. to her and the otehr vizards.
As the first phase of the war comes to an end, there are some shocking events that echo throughout the Seireitei. The Thirteen Court Guard Companies are in shambles and need to be refreshed, many characters are gravely injured and need a miracle cure, and some things have been broken in a way that means they will never be the same again. Yhwach proves himself to be a menace, we get more information the "Lord Reio" the Soul King, as well as the appearance of the incredibly powerful and kind of mysterious "Squad Zero". Lots of new reveals and most importantly there's a sense of actual progression to the story. The status quo is dramatically shifted not just by new powers and new villains but Soul Society itself having to transform. Ichigo is of course the hero and central character, but seeing him react to all these new happenings is great.
