When a kidnapping goes awry, three desperate characters find themselves trapped inside a remote cabin with a baby and a bag full of money. Noah is a kidnapper, hired to buy a baby from a human trafficking ring and smuggle her across the Canadian border for a cool half a million dollars. Eve is a teenage runaway, who takes the infant—and the sack full of cash—away from him. Hester is an outcast, living alone in a backwoods cottage, harboring secrets of her own. When their paths cross, it’s anyone’s guess who’ll come out on top.

With the law hot on their trail and the traffickers’ hired guns closing in, this unlikely trio is soon holed up together—and at one another’s throats. They’ll stop at nothing to save their own skins and escape with the loot and child. But which of the greedy three will be the last one standing? One thing’s for sure: no one will emerge unscathed . . .

The Greedy Three is a 2023 suspense novel written by Karen Katchur, who wrote the Northampton County trilogy, which I read and enjoyed a few years ago. Set in backwoods town not too far from the Canadian border, the three main characters fight for control of a half million dollars and a baby. Meanwhile, the local sheriff is obsessed with solving a missing persons case from years ago, one her father, the former sheriff, couldn't solve before his death. As we get to know the protagonists, we see their eccentricities and difficult childhood's impacting their maturity and view of life.

Hester, also known as The Witch, gave her daughter up for adoption but then tried to steal her back. Eve, a teen who brings the baby to the cottage, is caught up in some sort of sex/child trafficking scheme. Noah is the go-between and has promised a baby to a couple in Canada, who I might, are quite the peculiar pair themselves. There's a scene involving a phone and a balcony which I still don't get! In some ways, the characters are over the top and too comical for a suspense novel. I almost struggled to believe some of them given their exaggerated actions and opinions. That said, they were all very strongly depicted and memorable, so it was just a matter of taste... as the writing was solid.

The background setting was vividly described, to the point it saddened me over how some people live in squalor and depression. Both set the tone for the book and envelope readers in the misery that the characters have lived with all their life -- a great talent from the author to make us feel it too. The fight scenes are good, and in the end, the path forward is not at all what either of the greedy three would've predicted. The sheriff has a personal connection to one of them, and as we discover their history, we see the human side of her personality battling with the logical limitations of her job. Enjoyed the read; probably prefer the Northampton series as it's a bit darker / less comical, but the balance here will be perfect for many readers. Looking forward to more from Katchur in the future.

INTERVIEW: Check out my fun #AuthorElevatorSeries Interview with Karen, where we go behind the scenes of the book & the author.

Astute, riveting, and darkly comic! A cast of quirky, colorful characters and a laugh-out-loud heroine you will root for to the end. I loved Hester!

Karen Katchur (a favorite author) returns following Spring Girls (Northampton County Series) with her latest standalone thriller, THE GREEDY THREE. A razor-sharp, clever, and funny crime thriller, prime for the big or small screen.

A criminal plan is in place in the backwoods of upstate New York. Noah Weber waits for his contact. He will pull in half a million dollars if all goes as planned. A sex trafficking ring.

No matter what he's buying for his clients, whether stolen art, banned products, or simply info, the characters are all the same. The girl is close by next to the guy named Shot. She has the baby in her arms.

However, he had never worked with this contact or smuggled a baby across the border. A couple is waiting to pay big dollars for a baby, and he cannot allow anything to go wrong.

Before it hardly begins, all heck breaks loose. The girl gets cut with a knife, a stone is thrown, the girl escapes with the baby and the money. Noah and the guy have it out.

Meanwhile, in a remote stone cottage deep in the woods on a lake with an old canoe and an El Camino lives an older woman, an outcast, named Hester. She has been living here for ten years since her mom passed.

Hester is a force to be reckoned with, eccentric, a loner, and a bad name around town. A badass. She likes putting together puzzles and playing on her iPad. It is raining, and then someone shows up at her door. The electricity has gone out again.

Of course, Hester is equipped with a .22 and knows how to use it. She finds a young woman at her door with a baby. Her head is bleeding, her shirt is torn, and the baby is crying.

They call Hester a crazy old witch, teens egg her house at Halloween, paint dirty words on her canoe, plus more. Hester does not trust the woman, but she invites her in. She is not heartless. She will protect them.

Hester worked in a hospital in housekeeping for many years. Besides cleaning, she learned a thing or two observing nurses and doctors. She knows this young woman is suffering from some psychological shock. She immediately takes over with clothes, food, and first aid. Hester wants nothing more than to hold a baby and mother it.

Her mom forced her to give up her baby when she was very young. Her daughter was adopted and she wants nothing to do with her (due to stalking), etc. Now her daughter has a baby and she has a restraining order against Hester.

Hester knows a thing or two about running away in the night. Eve must be running from a rotten, no-good man. She knows what can happen when a young girl gets mixed up with the wrong man—the broken bones, the cuts, the bruised heart.

The woman says her name is Eve, and the baby is Ivy. Hester is no dummy and assured this is not her real name and sure she is in trouble. The baby is only a few weeks old. She doubts it is even her baby. She knows she is hiding something. Hester is tough as nails and whip-smart.

The couple expecting the baby had some bad luck and needed to replace their lost baby without anyone knowing. They are willing to pay big dollars on the black market. Noah will not let the girl get away. He will find her.

However, Hester is one step ahead of everyone. She is sharp as a tack. She sets out to cover the girl's tracks. "Every good action, even if it's good, is selfish in nature." She even finds the money and moves it for leverage, her insurance policy, and more.

Hester also has to worry about her cousin, Sherriff Laura Pennington of Bordertown. Hester wants more time with the girl and baby, and nothing can change how motivated she is to see this through.

Sherriff Laura is haunted by a fourteen-year-old girl and carries her photo, still searching for her. She went missing in 2017. It was her pop's last unsolved case and she promised him she would not forget. Today was the fourth anniversary of his death.

Now, this is where it gets funny and a total riot. Hester is off to the country store to buy diapers, formula, and food. But everyone knows her at the market and will not sell her these baby items due to her past. What she does next is award-winning.

Then, of course, the Sherriff, her cousin, comes to the cabin, and she has to hide the girl and the baby. In the meantime, Noah is making his way toward a cabin in the woods, searching for the girl and baby, when he comes in contact with a bear. (funny story here). He must finish what he started.

Now it is Hester, Eve, and Noah. THE GREEDY THREE. Hester will not go down without a fight. Someone is also looking for Noah. Then the FBI. A shootout. Who will survive? Will Hester be able to save the baby? She only wants to prove she can be a good mother.

THE GREEDY THREE is one intense, gripping suspense story! You will laugh and cry on this road to redemption. Dark, gritty, witty, and highly entertaining!

The characterizations are sharply drawn, with a keen eye for humor and dialogue. Karen dives deep inside their head. The characters come alive on the page. I love the final twist at the end and hope we see Laura again.

Many topics are discussed: family, motherhood, sex trafficking, runaway and pregnant teens, kidnapping, and more. Readers will be glued to the pages of this intense rip-roaring suspense.

Perfect for fans of Fargo, Mare of Easttown, and the Cohen brothers. If you enjoyed Joshua Moehling's Ben Packard Series And There He Kept Her #1, and upcoming Where the Dead Sleep #2, you will find a lot to like here.

I have been a fan of Karen's for many years and have read all her books. I highly recommend all of them. THE GREEDY THREE may be her best yet.

AUDIOBOOK: I am looking forward to listening to the audiobook by Podium, narrated by the fabulous actor/writer Scott Aiello. Check out his impressive bio.

We meet many characters in this tense, different read.

Of the three main characters, which one is the strongest and bravest - Noah, Eve, or Hester?

Noah is a kidnapper whose exchange went wrong.

Eve is a teenager who was a victim of sex trafficking and who was posing as the baby’s mother that was to be delivered by Noah to a couple.

Hester is a recluse whose cabin they are stuck in together.

Then others enter the cabin and things get very intense.

You will be on the edge of your seat as you read.

The three different story lines going on made THE GREEDY THREE a bit confusing, and I do have to say this was a bit more graphic than Karen’s other books, but so very good.

If you are a Karen Katchur fan, you won't want to miss her newest.

Enjoy!! 4/5

The Greedy Three by Karen Katchur. Thanks to @wunderbookspr ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After a kidnapping gone wrong, three strangers find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a baby and a hidden bag of money.

This is one of those books that you sit to read, finish a few hours later, not realizing how deeply you were involved until it’s over. Once you begin, you can’t put it down. It’s pretty much action packed from the first to last page. There’s a few related storylines going on, and they are all just as exciting as the next.

The Greedy Three comes out 2/28.

Thoughts:

I love a book I can see as a movie, and this one was one of them. A comedic thriller with the quirkiest characters I have ever read, that really brought this book to life, and made this a fast page turner of a read. This was the first book I have read from Karen Katchur and definitely won’t be the last. If you love thrillers and an entertaining read, that’s hard to put down, this is the book for you.

The author’s experience and knowledge in criminal justice really made this book feel authentic to me and I replay enjoyed reading The Greedy Three.

I recommend it!

Thank you to Wunderbooks PR for the gifted book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have never read this author before, but I am always up for a good thriller...and this was definitely it! I enjoyed this story so much. Told in multiple point of views: Hester AKA the witch, Eve AKA Girl, who shows up at Hester's secluded cabin during a storm with a baby, Noah AKA Cowboy, the man who is hired to take the baby and give to a wealthy family, plus Laura, the small-town sheriff who carries around a picture of a 14-year-old girl that disappeared one day without a trace. She continues to search for her five years later. There are also a few more, including the wealthy wife who is waiting for the baby. It seems like a lot, but it is rather easy to follow.

After a kidnapping gone wrong, Eve flees in the woods and find's Hester's cabin. Hester has her own issues and is not to be around babies (per the townspeople). Soon, Noah finds the cabin and the three of them are cooped up together in the stuffy cabin without electricity. Noah was to get a bag of money, but when things went wrong Eve ran with it and buried it. Soon, Hester found it and hid it again. Noah wants the money, but Hester won't give it up. Who will be victorious?

This book touches on some tough subjects, including human sex trafficking. It is very violent and, even a bit gruesome, but there was some comedy included to lighten it a little. The wealthy wife and the pram incident had me laughing at the image. I would definitely read this author again.

This is a compulsive read with lots of morally gray characters and an ending that reflects the mood of the book.

This one is not just a thriller it is also a character study in what motivates people.

I felt like this one wasn’t as twisty as it was a consistent unraveling and held steady revelations. The ending though..it was a tangled and twisty one that I’m still thinking about.

The three main characters: Noah, Eve, and Hester are a complex group.

Noah has arranged a baby buy for an obscenely wealthy couple who just lost their baby.

Eve is a young runaway and after escaping Noah at the handoff takes the baby and $500,000 dollars and finds a remote cabin.

The cabin belongs to Hester known around town as the witch. She takes in Eve and the baby because taking care of a baby is all she ever wanted.

They all want the money for very different reasons. The three work together at times and against each other at times even as others are looking for them.

🎵IT'S ME, HI, I'M THE PROBLEM, IT'S ME🎵!!!!! The Greedy Three written by Karen Katchur just wasn't for me. The story itself kept me on my toes, but the amount of side characters just confused me too much, I couldn't keep track of who was who, and who did what without getting confused. The synopsis sounded so interesting, I knew I had to get my hands on this book, the story line was definitely very interesting, but I just couldn't keep up with all of the characters, it was just very confusing at times. I went into this book with very high expectations, but I was a bit disappointed I couldn't keep up. This is definitely a suspense novel that will keep you guessing from start to finish. Multiple times I wanted to DNF this book, but I knew I had to keep reading to find out the ending. I wanted to love this book more than I did, but after I kept on getting confused, I just had to lower my expectations halfway through the story. I tried to give myself motivation, telling myself the story would get better, but I just didn't find it getting any better. If you love a good suspense novel, then I recommend this book to you, but go in with lower expectations than I did. I'm not bashing this book or author in any way, but this book just wasn't for me at all. If any of you do decide to read this, I hope y'all have better luck than I did.

When a kidnapping goes completely wrong, three desperate humans find themselves trapped inside a remote cabin with a baby and a bag full of cash. During a crazy storm, these characters find themselves drenched in sweat in a cabin with no power, water, spoiled food etc. Now, let's introduce the characters, Noah is a kidnapper, he was hired to buy a baby from a human trafficking ring, Noah is supposed to smuggle the baby across the Canadian border for a half a million dollars, I think this book didn't sit well with me because of the smuggling a baby for a human trafficking ring, it just made me sick to my stomach having to read about that. Eve is a teenage runaway who takes the infant, and the sack full of cash away from Noah. Hester is a outcast, living alone in a backwoods cottage that doesn't see much activity, Hester is also harboring secrets of her own. Hester is actually not allowed near her daughter and her grand daughter for purposes. But, as this story goes on and these three humans cross paths, it's anyone's guess who will come out on top. In my opinion, I thought Hester was a bit crazy for my liking, for crying out loud she had a fake baby doll, and baby clothes hiding in her secluded cabin, like what?

At first, Eve and Hester didn't see eye to eye, but as the story still went on, they still really never saw eye to eye, but they were together on finding a way to get Noah out of their hair, because he would just sit there and watch their every move with a rifle pointed at them. I just feel like the human trafficking didn't sit well with me, it made me like this book even less, it might seem interesting to some people, but for me it was a no go. With the baby not being biological to Eve, she couldn't breast feed the baby, so Hester had to teach Eve how to heat up formula on the little burner she had, and without power in the cabin it made it even more difficult. Eve had no clue how to change the baby's diaper, so I think she learned a lot from Hester. Eve and Hester tried to get Noah out of their hair, by making him eat spoiled ground beef, but Noah made Hester and Eve eat off his plate before he did, so he knew they weren't poisoning, but little did they all know they would all have to run to the bathroom five seconds ever single time from the spoiled ground beef. Hester was such a trouble maker, it kind of made me laugh at times.

A dark and twisted tale of greed and how far some are willing to go for what they want.

Noah has worked hard to build his reputation as a respectable person to do business with, even if that business happens to involve buying and selling babies. His newest clients want a three-week-old baby and he has everything lined out when it all goes wrong.

Hester lives in a cabin in the woods and stays to herself after a restraining order placed against her keeps her from seeing her daughter and family. Hester only wants to help but her actions always seem to be seen the wrong way and she ends up in trouble. One night she hears a knock on her door and opens it to find a young girl holding a baby in need of help. She takes the girl in and tries to help, but it isn’t long before Noah shows up looking for them and money taken from him. Between the three of them things turn tense quickly and no one will emerge unharmed.

This book was not what I expected, but in a good way. After finishing a book that was just so-so, I enjoyed this book more than I expected. The tension throughout was well done and the characters kept me engaged. Hester was the most well written in my opinion, she had gone through a lot, but it was obvious she was just trying to do what she could to help, even if she went about it the wrong way. Each character was greedy in their own way, just like the title suggested. There was more to the story than simply implied at the beginning and I really loved the way that played out. There was some language and darker themes throughout that make it not good for anyone younger to read. I do recommend this book to those that enjoy suspense thrillers.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

This book was a wild ride that pushed me to the edge of my comfort zone. Child trafficking is such a hard topic for me to read but this book kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed how there was also some dark humor sprinkled throughout the pages. At times this book was a little confusing and overly graphic and gruesome. Sometimes I’m open to graphic reads, but this one was just a lot to handle many because of the subject. I will say that I did enjoy the authors work overall so would definitely read more by her, this one was just a lot for me to handle emotionally.

If you are looking for a book that will push you to the edge of your comfort zone, then check this one out. This book will definitely make you think about the lengths some people are willing to go to get what they want.

Loved it!!! I'm pretty sure that's the most visitors Hester ever had to her cottage. All Hester wanted to do was put a puzzle together and instead she got a lot of unwanted visitors. Nothing seemed to intimidate her. I actually think she enjoyed having Eve and Noah there. I can't believe they actually ate the hamburger. The one question I couldn't wait to find out was why the grocery stores wouldn't sell Hester diapers or formula. I can see why she was fixated on babies. Being a mom, Priscilla should have realized why Hester wanted to be in her life. Although, Hester did go to extreme measures to be with her daughter, she was probably traumatized from what happened. Hester is the reason Ivy survived. Would the FBI shoot that many bullets into a house? They had to know that there were innocent people inside. Noah did a pretty good job of getting rid of people. If you need to kill someone, he would be the person you wanted by your side. Not one single thing worked in Noah's favor. He even got attacked by a bear. There was so much to this book and I couldn't wait to see how it ended.

Definitely recommend the book. It was a great mystery/thriller, but also had a bit of humor to it. I never knew what was going to happen next. I enjoyed the multiple POVs. Loved the characters, story and writing style. Look forward to reading more books by the author.

Favorite Quotes:

Then she looks inside the silverware drawer. Several girly magazines are thrown in with the forks and spoons. Not surprising to find porn in a man’s cabin in the woods. They need some kind of entertainment, because God forbid they neglect their penises for a couple of hours.

Time has a way of dulling memories, smudging the sharp edges of tragedy, smoothing out the vivid images in order for a person to go on living. She supposes what she’s feeling now, sitting here, is a kind of quiet reflection. It doesn’t mean she forgets the sacrifices that were made or the lives that were lost.

My Review:

I was transfixed on my Kindle while reading this gripping, brutal, horrifying, and haunting story. I rarely read such tragic, gruesome, or violent tales but the storytelling was simply stellar and oddly captivating while told from multiple points of view with expert handling of the interior narratives of the devastatingly fractured characters. I was taut with tension, enthralled, anxious, intrigued, and growing increasingly fretful as their stories unfolded and tragedies compounded. Karen Katchur is an evil genius, her neighbors should tread quietly and carefully.

I have never read a book by Katchur, though I have had my eye on them for a while, so when the publisher asked if I wanted a copy of the book, I was THRILLED!

This was a fun read due to the development of the characters. I think the characters were the best part of the whole book! They were all so vivid, quirky, and real - and each one was very distinguishable from the next.

This violent and turbulent story begins with a woman and a baby asking to be taken into a cabin in the middle of a storm and just keeps getting crazier from that point on. Sex trafficking and illegal activities were the main focus, but there are also things like power struggles, kidnapping, and even a bit of romance going on here.

I understand why the story was told the way it was, but I have to say, my favorite part about the whole book was Hillary and Emeril's story - and I just didn't get enough of it. I need a whole book JUST about them! They were fascinating!

This story was one of many that somehow were tangled together from unexpected situations. There was Hester also known by the locals as unusual and by chance a witch. Eve was part of a human trafficking deal that went bad. When people were killed she escaped and holed up in Hester's cabin with a baby. Then there was Noah who busted into the cabin and held the two women at gunpoint as he tried to get money and the baby. There were other characters and at times it was difficult to tell how they fit in to the book until later, confusing the main story line. Although I liked the suspense I found this story to be quite gritty; and hard to get through some raw scenes. I have read and loved many of Karen Katchur's books and will look forward to reading more of them but this one was very different.

I’m so glad I picked this up. While some parts were a stretch for believability it was a very entertaining read. I kept thinking how are these people going to get themselves out of this situation and who is going to come out on top. It touched a lot of dark topics like sex trafficking, drugs, and rape but it also had a dark humor to it at times, mostly during the character’s conversations. I loved how Hester frustrated Noah and her idea to escape that didn’t go to plan. There is a lot happening at once but the chaos of it all sucked me in and before I knew it, I was at the end of the book. The ending was not at all how I thought it was going to go but I liked how everything was wrapped up.

This one was fast-paced with selfish and corrupt characters, but I couldn’t help but root for them - well, some of them, others I just despised. It has a locked room feel, as Noah, Eve, the baby, and Hester are trapped in Hester’s cottage. None of them trust each other and soon, others will be coming for them.
This is all about greed, not seeing others as humans but as commodities or a means to an end. The ending is a bit shocking, not what I expected, but that’s what makes for a great story.

Once you get into this book, it is definitely a fast read. I loved learning that the author lives only a few hours away from me in Pennsylvania, which is cool to hear. Pennsylvania feels smaller than it actually is!

There are three people who end up coming together due to extreme circumstances in a small house in the middle of nowhere. Each has their own past and secrets they are hiding for various reasons. It takes place in a small town and the characters in the town start to play a role in this mystery as well. There is a nice twist at the end.

This book just wasn’t it for me. I really loved the synopsis (kidnapping gone wrong), but in the end, there was a disconnect between that synopsis and the book.

There were parts that were too drawn out. There were parts that didn’t get enough page time (the kidnapping ring!!) There were parts that were left completely unfinished with lingering plot points uncovered. Overall, I thought it was kind of a boring read when it had the bones to be exceptional.

This book. WOW! I loved this fast-paced thrill ride!! I was hooked from the very first chapter. Hester, Noah, and Eve were all such interesting characters. Karen Katchur’s writing was excellent and I breezed through the chapters. I wasn’t sure how this book was going to play out, it had me guessing every step of the way. Holy unputdownable book! Thank you NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. Really enjoyed this book! It was a quick read that kept me wanting more. I loved the different points of view and the interlacing of plots. I didn’t love the ending, because I was rooting for certain characters, but would still recommend this one!

I really enjoyed this quirky, dark read. Whilst the book addressed some very dark subjects (rape, sex trafficking, kidnap etc) it never felt super heavy whilst reading. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives throughout the book and how they all came together in the end.

This was such a fun thriller - - set in the woods, fast paced and action packed with such unique characters. Hester was one I won’t soon forget. My heart broke for her but I also found her very entertaining. I was on the edge of my seat during this wild ride of a book and enjoyed every minute!

Tense and deeply disturbing yet touches of humour shines through. The atmosphere is thunderous and the characters are not to be trusted but it is one page turning read.

This is my first experience with reading a novel from Karen Katchur, and it won’t be my last! An important element that I really appreciated, and something done well by the author, is creating characters who aren’t starkly black and white. There is no true protagonist or antagonist, because all of the characters within The Greedy Three are a mix of both, and at certain points, I rooted for Noah, and Eve, and Hester. The big greedy three. No one was inherently good, or inherently bad. And I loved that about them!

Not a single moment was left stagnant. The story moved at a fast pace, and I didn’t know what I’d encounter from one chapter to the next. Sometimes, there were moments of forced collaborations to see the characters through, and then BAM! No one can be trusted. It was easy to see what drove each one to their ultimate decisions and choices, and what they were motivated by. And as the synopsis indicates, the loot at the end of the reader’s journey is discovering who will be the last one to make it to the proverbial finish line, and at what cost.

Once started, The Greedy Three is tough to put down, because you want to know more. There is no good stopping point, other than reading it from start to finish. What a great thriller! A definite five-star experience!

I am blown away by how funny this fucked up book managed to be. These characters were so wild and had zero freaking filter between the 3 of them. The stomach bug chapters had me doubled over with laughter.

I think this book had the perfect blend of dark subject matter & irreverent humor, and it was a total page-turner. The multiple POVs were really well done, and paired with the short chapters made this book feel like it sped by!

My heart broke for "The Witch" in the end. I loved the way this story came together. I'll be keeping an eye out for whatever Katchur does next!

𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑦 𝑇ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒 was the first book I’ve read by author @karenkatchurauthor and it did not disappoint! I was hooked from page one, handcuffed to these pages I finished this book quickly!

The action starts from page one and it does not stop until the final chapter. I found myself so invested in the characters and the author did such a great job creating a thrilling, addictive, emotional plot.

There are several different storylines and they all intertwined beautifully! I LOVED how this book was set in upstate NY, close to the Canadian border, as that is where I reside!

This book focuses on many difficult topics such as human trafficking, abduction, abuse on every level, loss of a child and much more. Unfortunately these events occur everyday in our country and the amount of human trafficking that occurs between both the southern & northern border here in the US is appalling.

✨special thanks to @wunderbookspr for the gifted copy! Synopsis in comments!✨
