The thrilling conclusion to the story reuniting Pokemon Trainers Gold, Silver and Crystal...and Team Rocket too!
Crystal and Gold battle the enemy while Silver collects the 16 mysterious plates that Team Rocket wants to get their hands on to set their latest diabolical plan in motion. Then, a mysterious force field envelops our three heroes (along with Legendary Pokemon Arceus)and transports them all to...where?!
Which unwanted companions tag along? And what three new Legendaries will our heroes meet there?!
This was the series that my son wanted me to read to understand all the stuff around the legendary Pokemon. Done. It was better than I expected. I had read the series after this and now that one makes more sense.
This book was fire. I once rented it from the library and went to Korea. However the book was not returned and stuck between my bed and the wall. My dad couldn’t find it and he had to pay 15-20 dollars for damage. When I came back, I didn’t know about the book until 6 months later. This book will always have a special place in my heart!
We immediately jump right into the battle between Crystal, Silver, and Ariana to start off volume 2. Silver realizes the 16 plates pair up with pokemon types, and decides
This volume was really rapid fire and somewhat confusing (which is part of the reason I wrote the whole thing out), but I still enjoyed it.
Another incredible story by this talented manga artist/writer duo. Not sure if I should recommend you read it before or after the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum arc. I suppose it depends on preference, but I’m personally glad I read it after because it wouldn’t have made as much of an impact, and the pieces that aligned would have been forgotten. It did make me want to read the DPP arc again lol.
Heartgold Soulsilver might be my favorite arc. Well, that might be an exageration, but its just a very fun if short arc.
I love seeing Gold happily call Silver his buddy, and the way the trio interact is great fun. The first volume might have lagged a bit with a heavy focus on the intricacies of the Pokeathalon, but here we get to focus on the main event: Arceus himself. Arceus blasts the top half of the Ecruteak Gym off, and Gold quickly fights back, with a very, very amazing Blast Burn. One of my favorite panels, just for the way the flame looks in action. So Gold chases Arceus, Crys is fighting Team Rocket, and Silver hunts down the remaining plates, before everyone converges at the Sinjoh Ruins with Arceus.
So the Team Rocket exuctives kind of...suck? Mostly due to their pokemon selection. Three of them hold off the dex holders while Archer is doing a ritual with Arceus, and they all use the most basic pokemon. This is mostly a problem for Proton, as his only shown pokemon is a Goldbat which is not original to him. Petrel probably is the most interesting one, as he gets a fight with Silver earlier, and he gets quite a few moments in this final volume.
Another very wonderful moment: Lance, Giovanni and Pryce all show up to fight against the summoned Legendaries created by Arceus. Pryce and Lance take on Time and Space due to their unique skills, while Giovanni is just strong enough to take on Giratina with no other tricks. Pryce especially is cool to see, with how he and Gold interact, as they shared the journey in the Crack in Time. (Fun Fact: Pryce mentions a time where Celebi worked with humans, and you see a bag and a pokeball. This is likely a refrence to the end of the Ruby and Sapphire arc, where Ruby reveals he had a Celebi all this time.)
And finally, with everyone out of the way, all thats left is to try to reason with Arceus. Which Gold takes upon himself. Which, is a spot I really love. Just the speech he gives about giving humanity another chance, is just very enjoyable to hear from him. Eventually, Togebo evolves after Gold emphasizes with him, and they get Arceus to let humanity off the hook this one time. Oh, and Silver and Giovanni finally reunite. Giovanni vows to rebuild Team Rocket again, and Silver says he'll keep fighting against team rocket, no matter what. A bittersweet reunion again, but an understanding at last.
So, all in all, a very fun arc, mostly due to the strong characters of Gold Silver and Crys. The Johto region is just a bunch of fun guys, reading the last couple pages just walks you through a few jokes of what everyone is doing now, from Lance buying a few dozen capes, to Silver sitting at Gold's house until a Mecha Tv show comes out. 4 stars, one star less due to a few ntipicks of pacing, but just a very fun adventure all the way.

This was a wonderful story. I liked seeing Gold grow a bit more. He's never been my favourite, but I enjoyed him a lot more in this book than I have others. It was a heartwarming reunion between Gold, Silver and Crystal. I missed them all being together and it was a lot of fun.
Team rocket causing havoc again does not surprise me in the least. However the way the battle ended surprised me. I was not expecting to see Lance and the rest of his trio. The final battle between arceus and the others was cool, the small backstory for Sinnoh was cool. I loved the small cameo from some of the Sinnoh characters. Being back in Johto made me realize how much I missed these guys and I hope we get to see them again one day. All the gym leaders we got to see again were great. That TV guy was quite annoying to me, however the way he acts, it probably means he's supposed to annoy everyone. Following people around to get good footage.
Interesting that with HeartGold and SoulSilver arc they focus on the Arceus Event with those games. It is a cool idea and I do like the interaction between Giovanni and Silver as it does humanize Giovanni but still keeps him like he was. The battle was really cool but I do kind of wish that Cynthia was still part of the story like she was part of the event this story is based off of. But still really cool to see them bring back Lance and Pryce and follow up on there storylines.
The best part of this volume, and the part I will remember is the reference to diamond and pearl, and the little bit of character development between the trio. Not super great.
This volume jumps back a little and yet feels rushed. They just get all the plates, and they just meet Giovanni. Too much feels focused on Arceus and using exposition to do most of the things.
Squeezing in the couple of chapters from volume 42 (before entering the Black/White storyline), this volume is slightly larger than the previous one. I was very pleased to see VIZ adding in all of the original extras, which they never did the first time the translated this manga series (volumes 1-7 years ago).
To me...I don't know how the author and artist can top this story, it was short, but it was simply amazing in scope!
I liked this volume; I thought the story was rely interesting and it was fun to revisit Johto and to revisit many characters that we haven't seen since the second and third chapters of the series. I just wish they would have made the Four Team Rocket Generals a little more serious so we may take them seriously, but it was an interesting spin on the games climax.
