Normally, a graphic novel about anthropomorphic cats would not really be my thing, but the art is excellent and the history surprisingly good. The story is set in Prohibition-era St. Louis and basically the only difference between the world of Lackadaisy and our own is that the people are felines rather then primates. The author also includes historical notes relevant to the story, from major events to such seemingly minor details as floor period construction and windshield wipers. 4 stars.
I never get tired of praising the art, humor, and overall concept and execution of Lackadaisy, the world's greatest webcomic about bootlegging cats in jazz age St. Louis. This compilation of character art, one-off vignettes, and detailed lessons in illustration and artistry is a marvelous introduction to a beautifully rendered, painstakingly detailed world of wonderfully expressive characters in a dark and dazzling moment in history. It's a delight, and if you don't read this particular book you should definitely still read the Lackadaisy comic.
This is a really nice book. Gorgeous and well put together. A collection of background info on characters, some one-shot type comics to expand on individuals' personalities, notes on process in creating the comics, and beautiful art. It certainly lives up to the essential in the title. If you are a lackadaisy fan, this is a wonderful read. If you don't know lackadaisy yet, this is a great introduction to a wonderful world.
This is an AMAZING art book. I love seeing all of the references, the art processes, and the extra comics. I actually pull this out quite often both to bask in its glory, but also just to use its art tutorials for drawing clothes and facial expressions! I LOVE Tracy's style. It's really cool to see her process for drawing backgrounds! I didn't realize just how much of the pencil drawing is maintained in her work. It's amazing! Worth the wait for how dang long it took to get to me.
Lackadaisy is always a delight, and the beauty, humor, and love put into this book makes it a must-have for fans of the series or anyone who likes beautiful art.
