3.5 Stars. This one’s part of a series, but reads fine as a standalone.

Didn’t love the romance. The feelings and the trust developed more quickly than I would have preferred, it seemed like both characters had reasons to resist a bit more (he’s emerging from grief over his son and a divorce, and she’s suddenly a mom to her siblings, on the run from the law while he is the law). The physical side of their relationship wasn’t my favorite either, so many of their kisses seemed more driven by her gratitude than a natural impulse, plus, the location of their first time together, I think it was meant to seem daring or something, but my mind just went to eww.

Fortunately, one of the best things about Harlequin’s Super Romance line was that since they were slightly longer, most of the time there were other things happening in addition to the romance, and that’s what kept the pages turning here.

The suspense element, wondering when Callie would be found out, and when/or if the awful stepfather would catch up to them, that was solidly paced.

Some side characters leaned a bit stereotypical, and maybe it didn’t entirely make sense as to why someone would open a business when they’re only intending a temporary stay in town, but I did enjoy the sense of community that came about through that business.

The family stuff was good, too, the meals (Callie’s a chef), the kids imperfectly behaved, not quite themselves since experiencing some trauma read as realistic, and I really liked Wade’s grump of a dad and the gradual changes in him over the course of the story. So, even if the romance wasn’t quite it for me, there was still plenty to keep me interested and characters I did care about.
