Awesome Pokémon adventures inspired by the best-selling Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire video games!
Sapphire and Emerald need Ruby’s help to stop a crisis of planetary proportions—a meteor hurtling toward their home!
While training with Sapphire and their friend Steven in Sea Mauville, Emerald is attacked by a mystery Pokémon! Meanwhile, Ruby journeys to the Sky Pillar to earn the trust of Zinnia, the Lorekeeper of the reclusive Draconid tribe.
Can three Hoenn Pokédex holders stop a crisis of epic magnitude?
This was a fun new experience to read when I happened to go through it the first time I made the mistake of not reading it like manga so it was super confusing and I had to reread it 😂. This was a fun new experience as a Pokémon lover when until now I’ve only experienced the shows on tv.
This begins the OrAs saga, with the three Hoenn protags trying to catch up to the changes introduced in those games. Sapphire's ignorance here seems unfortunate, as it seems to set up Ruby as the only hero of the story. It does make sense that Ruby would try to protect Sapphire. Zinnia's inclusion, particularly calling back to the Salamence battle, is a neat thing. But they don't do much to expand on her Draconid community.
This one was interesting to me. I really love Steven, however the Devon corporation is giving me the creeps at the moment. I loved seeing Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald again. Ruby being his usual self, trying to protect Sapphire in only a way he understands. Sapphire and Emerald's friendship is hilarious to me, they are completely chaotic together.
Surprised this is listed, and so soon! Not complaining, though, since it makes my ridiculous "two books a day for 2024" goal a little easier to achieve, haha.
Pokémon Adventures:
The problem is, this starts in the middle of an ongoing series, so a battle is already in progress (and it doesn't even say which volume this is in for our reference), and the characters allude to something that happened that complete newcomers will not understand. I mean, sure, I know how the general Pokémon world works and a large number of the 23587 or however many Pokémon, but I don't know THESE specific trainers and what the backstory is or what sour Pokéblocks do and so on.
It's free, though (if you happened to get it on FCBD), so hard to complain about that... unless it meant you took this one instead of a free comic you might have enjoyed more. (In my experience, though, the local comic stores always had extras even when allowing five per person, ten with a food donation, so going back the next day is an option at least for me!)
Splatoon:
I have to hope/assume this starts the Splatoon 3 arc, since it feels like it actually STARTS a story, unlike the Pokémon half. Problem is, I couldn't get into the main Splatoon series since it's a little TOO goofy, and the main character Goggles has this streaking habit.
Like, I thought this was supposed to be a kid-friendly series. Wasn't that the point of Nintendo? But here we have this nudist/sexual assaulter who is naked and/or exposes someone else at least three or four times per volume. Thanks, Japan! (Yes, it's "censored" with a Splatoon squidling icon, and "at least" it's always male characters? That's a change.)
Braid seems cute, though. I like her. (Her? I suppose I'm assuming, since she has long "hair"—Inklings don't really have sex markers as such, and in-game, any Inkling can wear any customisation.)
On the whole, I can take it or leave it. The art is top notch, but the story loses me, for both stories. But what do I want for free, I suppose?
This was the first Pokémon manga that I read, and it was certainly something. Gen 3 is my personal favorite, so I was excited to read this. The Delta Episode in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is one of the best things that I’ve played in a game which made this appealing. It is interesting to read this take on the events and how the lore unfolds.
I can’t say that I was a fan of the characterization of Sapphire (May.) It was a complete change from how she is presented in the games and anime. That took some getting used to and I honestly did not fully get used to it. Despite that, I still want to continue reading the series and the rest of the manga based on Gen 3.
2 1/2 * Picked this up since it was a first volume and a starting spot for my daughter to read a Pokémon manga. I’ve never read one either but we both have decent knowledge of the series and games. I later found out this actually had already been published as part of the main Pokémon Adventures series so this must be a new version of that story. It makes sense because the way the story began it seemed like I was missing information I should have been aware of. It took a little while to get going but about halfway through I started to get more into the story. Zinnia was a fun character that caught my interest. Emerald was cracking me up too. The story was probably just enough for me to pick up the next volume to continue. You may want to research some though before diving into this to get the overall story continuation.
The pokemon battle was decent but the story structure was really weird and disjointed. Just play the game Alpha Sapphire (or Omega Ruby) or watch the anime. The Splatoon bit was uninteresting and felt like a how to guide for the game
