Definitivamente Jordi Sierra I Fabra se convierte en mi autor favorito sobre la posguerra civil española. Me conmueve cuando narra aquellos años convulsos, de sufrimiento, de cartillas de racionamiento, de hambre de soluciones y sed de esperanza, sin futuro para la gran mayoría de los que no se habían sometido al régimen impuesto y sin opciones para un mañana mejor porque ese mañana tardaría décadas en llegar...

This is the fourth novel in Jordi Sierra i Fabra’s Inspector Mascarell series and the fourth “proper” Spanish novel that I have read.
This novel is set in May 1949 and, as the title suggests, the action takes place over two very frenetic day. Mascarell is now living with Patro in the flat she used to share with her younger sisters. She is away visiting a sick relative, so he gets up one Monday morning and goes to his favourite bar for breakfast. A young man approaches him and asks him to go with him to the hospital where his old comrade Mateo Galvany lies dead. Mateo Galvany and his daughter Maria appeared in Volume III when Mascarell dropped in on them and promised to return for dinner. He never did and now it’s too late. Maria explains that her father was killed the previous day in a hit and run accident. She is convinced it was murder and Mascarell promises to investigate….
Despite the fact that he is now 65 and running out of puff, he dashes round Barcelona at breakneck speed on the trail of Galvany’s killer. In the process he uncovers a plot to assassinate El Caudillo Franco, who is visiting Barcelona on the evening of the second day. Although you know that Franco died peacefully in his bed 26 years later, this book is a page turner and I found it even more gripping than the other Mascarell novels I’ve read.
I’ll say no more about the plot. Regarding the Spanish language, this fourth novel was slightly easier for me to read than the first three. Perhaps I’m getting used to the author’s style and word use. There is some use of idiom, particularly in the dialogue, so I had to have my dictionary app handy at times. There are twelve books in the Inspector Mascarell series and I intend to read the rest of them over the next few months. By the end, I hope to be reading Spanish “fluently”, i.e. without needing the dictionary (as much). I would recommend the series to anyone who enjoys detective thrillers, or who wants to use “proper” Spanish to improve their language skills. You won’t be disappointed.

Amena y trepidante, así definiría la novela, de fácil lectura y rápida, sin trozos absurdos de relleno, con los giros justos y necesarios, como todas las novelas que llevó leídas del Inspector Miquell Mascarell y espero que así sean las futuras que lea.
Una trama para matar a Franco durante la visita. Barcelona a finales de los años cuarenta, en plena posguerra, en los años más duros de ésta y aquí está el dilema, qué hacer.
El Inspector cada vez se nos hace más mayor, es lo que tienen los años, que pesan, pero el rencor y los recuerdos de lo vivido permanecen y se acrecentan, no sé si es el personaje o el autor el que tiene esa espina clavada, pero ya no creo que lo supere ninguno de los dos.
La trama policial es muy correcta, no tiene fallos, puede ser una investigación real, los personajes son creíbles, sobre todo los taxistas y su manía de hablar, eso no ha evolucionado y la descripción de la España de posguerra es tal cual la cuentan los que la sufrieron, con lo cual es perfecta.
Una buena novela negra en una España dura.

Siempre es un placer volver a Jordi Sierra i Fabra y a su detective, el Inspector Mascarell. Son unos crimis deliciosos con un protagonista carismático en una época dura, la posguerra española. La trama está bien construida y la intriga te hace estar pegado a las páginas del libro. Si hay que ponerles una pega es que con el tiempo se van volviendo un tanto repetitivos y ya no sorprenden. El inspector está metido en su pesimismo de costumbre, los malos, más o menos toda la sociedad que le rodea, también reaparecen para llenar la novela. Así entretiene pero no sorprende y se acaban leyendo estas novelas como un encuentro con un viejo amigo del que ya sabemos que esperar, dónde la conversación volverá a rozar los temas de siempre.
Aún así, sigue siendo un placer y de hecho leeré el siguiente.

Fiel amante de las aventuras del inspector Mascarell, ésta deja bastante que desear. Para empezar, la sinopsis del libro te adelanta un aspecto clave que no se descubre hasta el último tercio del libro, aproximadamente.
Me parece una edición algo más descuidada que las anteriores, empezando ya por la horrible portada con photoshop que han puesto, cuando las anteriores eran fotos preciosas de Català-Roca.

And at his fourth investigation, Inspector Mascarel's adventures seem to have lost a part of their appeal. In my opinion, a bit of a repetitive formula which, while still an enjoyable read, lacks the gripping enthusiasm of previous volumes. And, although Sierra i Fabra's writing is still detailed and at times saying a lot in the fewest words possible (a trade signature), the instances at which you feel enraptured by it are less than expected.

Me encantan las aventuras de Mascarell por inverosímiles que parezcan. Es evidente la posición de Sierra i Fabra respecto al franquismo y tiene todo el derecho de pronunciarse al respecto.

¿Que tendrá el viejo ex-policia republicano que es un imán para meterse en los líos más peligrosos y retorcidos de Barcelona? ¿Es que Sierra i Fabrá no le va a dejar pasar un retiro tranquilo y pausado junto a su querida Patro? Pues no. Sin cambiar mucho de tercio, Mascarell se verá dentro de otro "caso", esta vez contra los más altos estamentos de la repugnante dictadura. Nuevamente una carrera contrarreloj por los más bajos fondos del area metropolitana barcelonesa donde lo mejor de cada casa muestra su cara más perversa o desesperada. Y ahí está el viejo policía, para parar todos los golpes, sin soltar la presa, en otra aventura desenfrenada (Sierra i Fabrá cada vez le da menos tiempo! dos días!) y emocionante que devorarás casi sin darte cuenta.

Marascall has to be one one of the most endearing detectives I have encountered,,.
It is unfortunate that this series has not been translated into English. But then, again, there is done much about 20th century Spanish history and the era after the Spanish Civil War that English readers of the 21st century do not know or understand.

En esta cuarta entrega Miquel Mascarell investiga la muerte de su antiguo jefe en la policia y va descubriendo toda una serie de implicaciones para realizar un atentado a Franco.
Esta es la primera de las novelas de la serie donde no tiene que trabajar para empresarios fieles al regimen, si no investigar todo unos sucesos entre gente de sus mismas ideas. En lineas generales el libro no es tan dinámico que los anteriores y tiene alguna parte que lo hace un pelín más lento y que la historia no sea ni tan redonda ni tan dinámica ni mantiene la intriga hasta el final para saber como acabará la historia.
En esta cuarta entrega Miquel Mascarell investiga la muerte de su antiguo jefe en la policia y va descubriendo toda una serie de implicaciones para realizar un atentado a Franco.

La historia sigue fiel al estilo fresco, directo y ágil de Jordi Sierra i Fabra. Es fácil visualizar cada escena y la historia va ganando intensidad dramática hacia el final. En esta entrega del inspector Mascarell no me ha interesado tanto saber quién era el asesino, sino desenmarañar un complot para matar a Franco. Las últimas páginas, previas al instante planeado para el ataque, son verdaderamente trepidantes y compensan todas aquellas páginas más densas. La última escena entre Miquel y Patro resulta un final redondo y simpático. En definitiva, Jordi Sierra i Fabra no decepciona.

Cada vez me gusta más esta serie de novelas negras de "perdedores". Jordi Sierra i Fabra narra con ritmo y precisión, la lectura es fluida y, al tiempo, invita a reflexionar, a ir más allá de la superficie. Las historias están muy bien construidas, los personajes también, en ningún momento se pierde el interés y al terminar me quedo con la sensación de haber aprendido algo. Muy bueno.

Otra novela preciosa del inspector Mascarell No es la que más me ha gustado pero merece la pena Me encantan todas sus historias y felicito al autor porque trata con mucha sensibilidad el amor del protagonista a su mujer

Otra aventura del antiguo policía Miquel Mascarell, esta vez en el año 1949, cuando Franco visitó la ciudad de Barcelona. La novela recrea la época con muchos detalles y la trama es directa y amena. Un clásico de la novela negra y una saga de imprescindible lectura.

Con cada libro que leo me enamoro más de esta saga....la manera de escribir que tiene el autor,como siendo más joven y no haber vivido esa época tan oscura me siento como si yo estuviera en el la Guerra Civil Española o en la Posguerra Española.
