Abandoned. Hunted. Out of control.

Gethyon Rees had always felt at odds with the universe, and hoped for an escape among the stars. But discovering he has the ability to cross time and space with just a thought brings more problems than it solves: a deadly bounty hunter who can follow him anywhere, the unwelcome return of Tarquin Secker--the mother who abandoned him--and an ancient darkness that seeks him and all those with his talents.

When an unforgivable act sets him on the run, it'll take more than his unearthly powers to save his skin and the lives of those he cares about. It'll take a sacrifice he never expected to have to make.

Previously an Analytical Chemist & stay-at-home mum, Pippa Jay is now a Science Technician who writes scifi and supernatural stories to engage the emotions. Somewhere along the way a touch of romance crept into her work and refused to leave. In between torturing her plethora of characters, she spends the odd free moment looking after her chickens, creating cosplay for humans and dolls alike, and studying the Dark Side of the Force. Although happily settled in the historical town of Colchester in the UK with her husband of 30 years and three not-so-little monsters, she continues to roam the rest of the Universe in her head.

Pippa Jay occasionally blogs at Adventures in Scifi, and Romancing the Genres. Her works include YA and adult stories crossing a multitude of subgenres from scifi to the paranormal, often with romance, and she’s one of eight authors included in a science fiction romance anthology—Tales from the SFR Brigade. She’s also a quadruple SFR Galaxy Award winner, been a finalist in the Heart of Denver RWA Aspen Gold Contest (3rd place), the 2015 EPIC eBook awards, the 2015 RWA LERA Rebecca (2nd place), and the GCC RWA Silken Sands Star Awards (2nd place).

Gethyon gets an unreserved five stars from me. If I'd had the time to read it in one sitting, I would have done so for sure.

Jay introduces us to Quin's twin children, Gethyon and Callon, but in particular Gethyon. Inheriting psi-talents from his father, the Eidar Darion, Gethyon is in danger from the Siah-dhu, a dark entity that preys on his kind. For this reason, Quin leaves Gethyon and Callon with their human grandfather so that she can distract the Siah-dhu from their presence.

This coming-of-age story takes us on a journey as we watch Gethyon's initial unwitting use of his powers through to the point where he is in full control of them and able to face the Siah-dhu. At the same time, we watch Gethyon changing from an angry young man - a hangover from an early encounter with his mother - into an assured adult.

Jay's pen depicts characters and worlds alike with a deftness that transports the reader into the visions she creates. Pain, agony, acceptance and joy alike flow off the pages, and oh, there's this one bit that makes me wince/cringe/shudder like no other writing I've read. Spoilers!

I pick up every new work that Jay publishes without hesitation, and I have yet to regret it. This is another masterpiece!

I'm not normally a reader of Young Adult fiction, even science fiction. I often find it to be shallow, written with the voice of a ten-year-old and lacking any real story or characters that interest me. However, when Pippa Jay released Gethyon, I knew I had to at least give it a try. I have read other works by Pippa Jay, including Keir. Gethyon is in the same universe and follows within the same storyline of Keir, though Keir was written for an adult audience. I must admit that I could be considered a fan of Pippa Jay's stories and writing style, so I was curious to see how that might translate into a Young Adult book.

I know there is a bit of a grey area these days between children's books, young adult books and the latest new adult genre craze. I am not quite sure myself where the lines are technically drawn, what is considered age appropriate and what rules are applied to a young adult book. Without getting into semantics, I will propose that Gethyon is appropriate for ages 13 and up, much like a pg-13 movie. It includes violence, a self-defense murder and an attempted sexual assault (which is brushed over and not at all detailed). It also includes a vocabulary that might have younger readers reaching for the dictionary more than a few times. The style may also give younger readers a hard time.

The book is beautifully written. It does not lack the descriptive style and flow that I have come to appreciate in Pippa Jay's writing, which is a loss I feared given that this is intended as a young adult book. While I am uncertain as to how much of a road block this may pose to the intended audience, for me it was awesome. I loved every single page, paragraph and sentence of this book. The pace is fast, full of action and there were never any points of lag, which is sure to keep younger reader's attention. Even the slower scenes were ripe with a palpable tension and emotion that underlined every word and followed each character.

There are many great characters in this book, although the bad guys seemed a bit lax in the redeeming qualities department. This is often a crux of young adult books - a lack of complexity, reasoning or grey area for the villains. This is probably the only real gripe I have about the book. The bad guys are just bad, plain and simple. Dephon was an evil jerk, Neoris was a bastardous jerk and Jinx is well... Jinx.

Enough about the badies, though. Let's talk about Gethyon Rees. Gethyon is a complicated character, often walking the fine line between darkness and light. He is a kid struggling with abandonment issues and a dark power welling up within him that he has no idea how to control. On the other hand, he is sweet, caring and attempts to do the right thing, even when it means doing something wrong to protect those he cares about. Often a victim of circumstance, he finds himself in trouble with the authorities and outsiders hunting him for a bounty, while internally he is struggling to keep the growing power within him under control.

Will he let the power control him and draw him into the tempting realm of vengeance and domination, or will he control the power and use it to protect those he cherishes and reach his dreams of traveling the stars?

I'm not telling - so go read the book.

A nice amalgamation of science fiction and fantasy, "Gethyon" has enough of each to satisfy the SF, F, and even SFR readers.

Gethyon and his twin sister, Callon, live with their grandfather because their father is dead, and their mother abandoned them. The story opens showing Gethyon's poor anger management problems. This boy is pissed off all the time. He's angry at his father for dying and his mother for abandoning him and his sister. Understandable, but Callon seems to have adapted better than her brother.

Not too far into the story, the reader discovers that Gethyon can teleport across vast reaches of space. But it's not a trivial thing. He only discovers this ability when burning with rage. His sister is raped by her supposed boyfriend, and Gethyon reaches the boiling point. He kills the rapist accidentally and is charged with murder. Shoved into the smallest possible corner, his ability bursts out, hurling him through space and time. What he doesn't learn until later is that he's being hunted by Jinx, a bounty hunter, who can follow Gethyon through the gateways he opens.

Gethyon is on the run, not really understanding his new-found abilities. Then, his long-lost mother appears and gives him some of the background on his talent and why she could not keep him and his sister when they were born. His mother has hidden them from the mysterious forces who have sent Jinx after him.

The novel follows Gethyon as he tries to make sense of his new status. Still resenting his mother's abandonment, he does consent to being trained to handle himself in a less chaotic fashion. When he he can no longer sit idly by when people he loves are being killed, Gethyon becomes the hunter. Look out evil mysterious creatures! Gethyon is pissed, and he's hunting you now.

Gethyon reads quickly. There's plenty of action going on, along with a love story (spoilers!) and a satisfying SFR for teen readers. Adults can enjoy it just as much, but it doesn't have the racier stuff common to SFR.

Gethyon is one of my most eagerly anticipated reads of the year. As soon as Amazon had it for sale, I snagged my copy, dropped everything, cleared my schedule and read it from beginning to end.

Gethyon is the sequel to Pippa Jay's first novel, Keir, which I LOVED! The author is a shining star in a new wave of science fiction authors. Her effortless grasp of language and story structure takes you down a web of adventure, peril, budding romance and thrills.

The title character is a young man tortured by talents he cannot understand that leave him ostracized by his peers. It's a similar theme and premise to Jay's first book in the series, Keir. Gethyon is Quin's son. He inherited his mother's unusual psi powers, and her ability to navigate time and space with a thought, opening pathways through the universe.

I found the character of Gethyon to be well-drawn and fascinating as he struggles with a coming-of-age and coming into an understanding of the powers he considers more of a curse than a blessing. With a light touch, the author's sensitivity takes the reader along as Gethyon battles with his teen angst, forges difficult relationships with his mother and finds his feet all while on the adventure of a lifetime.

With colorful worlds full of nuance and dimension, characters that walk off the page, and themes that anyone who has been either parent or child can relate to, Gethyon was a wonderfully subtle read that I will joyfully be returning to again and again.

My only complaint is that it takes far longer for Pippa Jay to write her books than it does for me to read them.

Please, dear lady... Keep them coming!

**I was given this book in exchange for an honest review**

It is very unusual to find what I consider to be a true science fiction book in the YA genre. Too often they switch way over into the fantasy realm for reasons that I can only assume are to make them more palatable to younger audiences. Pippa Jay does not make this mistake. She has created a great YA sci fi book that most adult sci fi readers would enjoy. I know I did. Although the protagonist is a teenage boy the issues that he has to deal with are easily identifiable for everybody. The world he resides in is exciting and fraught and this makes for a very quick read.

When I read the book I didn't realize that this was actually considered a sequel to an earlier adult book released. Regular science fiction readers will have no issues reading this as a stand alone although I have to say i am tempted now to check out the earlier book just because I enjoyed the world that this takes place it. The again I have a soft spot for Psi-Talents and there aren't very many books that seem to promote them.

A very good 4 star YA read! I would highly recommend it. V""V

This was a phenomenal Sci-Fi read!! We follow Gethyon through his youth with his grandfather, his struggles trying to fit in, and the intense anger that is always present inside of him. He doesn't understand why he doesn't fit in and why it is so hard for him to become close to others. He is sensitive to everyone's thoughts and emotions which drives him to keep people at bay, especially one of the boys at school who hates him. He is the opposite of Gethyon, but sadly has his sister's affections, so he does not interfere and keeps away from him. Would that he could make Callon see what he did!! The situation he finds himself in might have been avoided!

One event sparks a chain of happenings that change Gethyon's life forever. His mom comes back for him and he barely escapes capture several times. She trains him on how to use and control his abilities, but he is still so full of anger. Will his recklessness cost him his life?

My heart went out to Gethyon in this story. He had such a hard time with life and it didn't get any better as he got older. His one bright spot was his sister, but even she had a hard time getting close to him. This book was definitely action-packed and exciting!! I can't wait for more in this series!!

Having read Pippa Jay's first novel Keir, I knew whatever else I read from her would be fantastic. I wasn't wrong. Gethyon, set in the same world as Keir, along with one key character from the first novel, is an all too short (it seemed) story that moved along with engrossing adventure, action, and some characters you just can't get enough of. The world that Pippa Jay created for her story and characters is simply incredible, and the casual way planets and cities are just mentioned makes this world and everything in it seem like an everyday, normal thing. And who wouldn't want a Spirit Dancer! Excellent read for anyone addicted to science fiction, space opera and characters with compelling stories.

Gethyon rocks! This fast-paced, gripping ride zips through time and space, love and loss, rebellion and acceptance. Set in the world of Keir (which you don't need to read to understand this story) it shows us another side of Quin. This is the story of her son, Gethyon. It's a coming of age story that I didn't even realize was YA.

It's a well-written page-turner.

Pippa Jay scores again!

This book is fast paced and quickly takes the reader through the story. I found Pippa Jay's talent for crafting a sentence exquisite and can't recall many books with such acute detail.
