Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
Case Closed Vol. 78 continues Gosho Aoyama’s long-running detective series with a mix of intense mystery, character drama, and small but important steps forward in the overarching plot. This volume stands out because it delivers both clever cases and meaningful developments that keep the story moving.
The Mystery Train arc is the first and most thrilling section of this collection. It starts off as a lighthearted game of deduction when Conan, Haibara, and the others board the Bell Tree Express, but it soon becomes a life-or-death scenario. One of the cars vanishes and a murder takes place on the train, making the mystery seem more significant and perilous than usual. While Bourbon's true identity becomes a major focus, the Black Organization remains in the background. For fans who have been following the series for a long time, these chapters feel like a major payout since they are tight and suspenseful.
After the train story, the pace slows down with a quieter case at Sonoko’s family’s tennis retreat. Conan, Ran, and the Junior Detective League find themselves involved with a group of friends dealing with grief, and when another death occurs, Conan has to untangle a mystery rooted in personal relationships. It is less action-packed than the train, but it brings out a more emotional side of the series. The volume ends by setting up a new Kaito Kid heist. This case is flashy and playful, offering a lighter mood after the darker stories earlier on. Although the setup does not resolve in this book, it leaves the reader curious to see how things will play out in the next volume. What makes this volume work is the balance of tone. The Mystery Train is thrilling and dangerous, the retreat case is quiet and emotional, and the Kaito Kid teaser adds a sense of fun. At the same time, Aoyama keeps the larger Black Organization plot alive without giving away too much. It is the kind of volume that reminds you why the series has lasted so long: it can be both entertaining in the moment and important to the bigger story. Overall, Case Closed Vol. 78 is one of the stronger recent entries in the series. It has clever mysteries, memorable settings, and developments that make the reader feel the main story is moving forward. I would recommend it to fans of detective fiction and especially to those who have been following Conan’s long battle with the Black Organization.

I know I have said this before but this volume of Case Closed has all the makings of a movie! I have never watched a single episode of the anime or any of the movies, so this might already be the case; but this is a fun premise in my mind. This volume finds the Junior Detective's being invited to a murder mystery on a train (pretty cool huh?)! The people onboard are not all new to the team and when an actual murder occurs onboard. I would not say that this series is anywhere near wrapping up, but I do feel lately they have been addressing the evil organization as well as bringing more and more of the characters established throughout the series together. What does that mean for the future of the series? I don't know but this series has been running since 1994! This story is the cover story and appropriately so. The next story deals with tennis and a murder on the birthday of celebrating a friends passing. It isn't a bad story but after the first case, I felt it a little bit of a letdown case. The last few pages of this book start a story starring the Kaito Kid but the details of bulk of the story will have to wait for volume 79 of Case Closed.
This volume contains the "mystery train" story line, where Conan is trying to solve a murder while as a sub plot the Black Organization is trying to find and kill Sherry (Hainera). It's an interesting continuation of the Black Organization story line that actually answers some questions. Next, Ran and Sonoko bring Conan and Mori to a tennis camp and they get involved in another murder mystery. The next story is the beginning of another Kaito Kid story, continued in the next volume.
General Synopsis: As mentioned above, I am going to write a proper review for this soon, but I have a few books ahead of this one in the queue, so I cannot stop reading DC NOW! That's sacrilege. I have decided to read all the chapters available up to now (we are almost to 1000!) As you can see, I am totally fangirling over here and I don't care, because this is one of my favorite manga series, ever! But all of this aside, there are a few things I wanted to list so I don't need to go back and look everything up when I do finally sit down and write my fangirl review. ✌🏻
DO NOT click on the spoiler link if you don't want to read all the cases in this volume, because it will ruin it for you. On the other hand, if you're a fan like me or are looking for a certain case (and please note, these are how I have set the cases), etc. click away, that's why it's there.
Another spoiler link, so don't click if you don't want to ruin this manga. I am going to include the characters introduced or as the series continues are in this volume. Personally, I think us DC fans love certain characters more than other (yes, Heiji, I mean you!), so sometimes when we are re-reading this series (like all the time!) you might wish to start at a specific case or start when a certain character is involved.
Characters in this volume:
Personal Opinion: #1, I never call this CASE CLOSED. If you do, you're not a true fan of this series, so don't even bother reading my review or my personal opinions. I'm sorry if I offend you, but you offended me first by telling me you want to read CASE CLOSED or you just love Jimmy.
#2, as you can tell by #1, I read this online. I would never waste my money buying a manga series in english that cannot get the name correct and mess up the main characters to make it appear more "ENGLISH." I am so happy I don't run a blog and this isn't a review on Sailor Moon, #1, because I have a huge soap box tirade against DiC. I also don't think there is anything against reading something online. Comics, which is what manga are, are meant to be read and shared and sometimes paying over $10 is too much in my opinion. Plus, I read the newest chapters as soon as they are released from Japan, because I would never miss a release of DC. So this is my personal shout out to you translators from me, Thank You!
one of the two from my favorite arcs in DC. it's just really great and awesome. the plot twist???? damn it's so good. i never thought there would be a day where amuro tooru, akai shuichi, conan and kaito would be in a place together lol
And here we had the Bourbon reveal. I’m still bummed I missed the mystery of it in “real time”. I don’t know if I’m reading too much of these mysteries…I’m still calling the killers. 😅
I am amazed that by 78 manga books, it always can get better and better especially when there is a whole manga book that has the black organisation in it. I always wanna know moooreeee!!!
Baru selesai baca sampai end case mystery train aja, but kyaaah, nice nice!
Walau mungkin feeling last minutenya kurang kerasa karena emang gak diliatin, hanya diketahui ketika penjelasan saja.
Salut buat karakter-karakter pendukung tim Conan yang berhasil berakting dengan baik, kecuali satu anggota tim cowok dadakan yang muncul terakhir itu yang kalau ditilik lagi bahkan keliatan sama sekali gak peduli sama karakter yang dimainkannya -_-, padahal dia tuh seharusnya anggun, cool, with smart-looking face and gestures, hiks, ngerusak image aja. Yah mau gimana lagi sih berhubung orangnya emang belum pernah ketemu sama karakter yang dimainkannya plus dadakan pula, wakakak.
ps: gila, kupikir Conan emang dah gak peduli sama nyawa si cowok terakhir itu, hahah, bener-bener jadi korban, kau beneran jadi tambah berhutang sama dia Conan.
THE BELL TREE EXPRESS MYSTERY AND THE VANISHING CAR Conan and the Detective Boys board the luxurious Bell Tree Express, owned by the Suzuki family, where a staged mystery quickly turns into a real crime. After receiving a mysterious "detective" card, they witness a masked man shoot a passenger in Room 7B. But when they return, the entire train car has vanished. Masumi Sera’s suspicious behavior and a hidden card lead Conan to uncover that Ran’s group had been tricked into switching rooms. The plot thickens as Scar Akai’s unsettling presence and Haibara’s fearful reaction suggest that the Black Organization may be involved.
SCAR AKAI’S SHADOW AND THE BLACK ORGANIZATION’S RETURN Haibara’s intense reaction to seeing Scar Akai heightens the tension as Conan realizes that Masumi was holding the key to the trick. After exposing the staged setup, they discover that the supposed victim has been murdered in a sealed room. Scar Akai’s sinister glare at Haibara raises the stakes, while Amuro and Subaru Okiya’s involvement hints at deeper ties to the Black Organization. As Vermouth appears nearby, it becomes clear that the deadly game with the Organization is far from over — and Bourbon’s true identity may finally come to light.
TENNIS CAMP TRAGEDY AND AMURO’S HIDDEN AGENDA After the intense events on the train, Sonoko invites Ran, Kogoro, and Conan to a tennis camp. Conan is surprised to discover that Amuro, whom he now knows is Bourbon, is Sonoko’s tennis coach. A sudden accident leaves Conan unconscious, and Amuro tends to his injury with suspicious ease. When Conan regains consciousness, he finds himself trapped in a stifling room — and one of the campers is dead from blunt force trauma.
Well, tiga kasus sekaligus. Excellent :D
***
Conan tujuh puluh delapaaaaaan ^_^
Akhirnya identitas Sera, Amuro, dan Subaru mulai sedikit terungkap.
Di volume ini ada Kid. Kid-nya keren banget lagi. Senangnya :D
Kasus terakhir ending-nya gantung.
At last, 5 dari 5 bintang untuk Conan. It was amazing. Selalu ^_^
