Kamachi Kazuma (鎌池和馬) is a Japanese-born light novel author and the original creator of the Toaru Majutsu no Index light novel series and Toaru Kagaku no Railgun, its spin-off manga series.
This was a weird and wonderful standalone story that gave a small break from the tensions of the GREMLIN arc, and it was structured in a strange manner but it really added to the story. I had no idea that the story would go in the direction it did, and it's always great to see Tsuchimikado taking action. Rensa was a really interesting concept, being able to copy abilities from espers, including level 5 abilities that it could understand. I loved what happened when it tried to copy Imagine Breaker. It was odd to see Fremea in the limelight but it was really awesome.
What I really like about Index is how a volume can start with a simple premise but quickly evolve into a highly complex plot, like in this volume... What seemed to be a main plot focused on Kamijou Touma with a lot of comicity and some seriousness , is quickly overwhelmed by the apparent secondary plot, which becomes the main one. This balancing of status may seem confusing and just show an author's immaturity, but not for Kamachii-sensei, the genius man. With a poetic and strongly descriptive writing, the lyrics seem to sparkle before his eyes, almost like a parody of the objects "beautiful and the beast", which demonstrates how fanciful and beautiful his poetry is.
The speed of the narrative is frantic and the mystery is well coordinated, but, I won't deny it, the flow of information is very confusing and intentionally.
Probably to bring the reader closer to the character + the confusing situation, we have Kamijou Touma, a hero who finds himself lost in front of the plans and constantly trying to save someone while trapped in the despair of ignorance, a feeling yes felt before, but now with a weight completely different (It's probably because of this and the main narrative that I was able to feel the complex feelings of Touma and Tsuchimickado so much).
Speaking of Touma, why not mention the Heroes VS Heroes theme, or even more, the Aggilate Halation plan...
As usual, expect a lot of questions and philosophies, after all, Index always does this in a very cohesive way. Speaking of heroes, how about we talk about the main protagonist again? The construction of his character is commendable, the new Kamijou Touma who was born constantly sought the ideal paths, a perfect ending, but driven by the despair of getting lost several times (but not to the point that he failed to recognize himself), it would be obvious that their determination would one hour fade and NT3-NT7 exploited this very well, without creating discrepancies Ah, speaking of discrepancies, what a good point to make when we talk about Index.
Honestly, this arc is full of creativity, probably the most creative reading I've ever seen in my life, but... It's normal for authors get lost, after all an epiphany is often driven by taking emotional actions, without a great cold analysis behind it, however..... Kamachii, you really are sensational! Initially I was really expecting some holes in the script, but as the mystery was done as well as an acclaimed book of the genre, the answers were answered with good cohesion and a very clever script. Of course, I won't deny, some actions and reactions are bathed in subjectivity, which will really lead to doubts, but really thinking about the context Index has built so far, you will probably be able to come up with explanations for them.
Finally, the concept of the billiard ball was really interesting and unexpected... Now, it seems that with the accumulation of despair the container that held it couldn't stop it anymore and a big explosion happens... Finally, with the terrain devastated the perfect environment for a war is created, a complex juncture of human feelings.
NT8, NT9 and NT10... I expect great things from you
Even though science dominates this arc, my experience with this volume was certainly magical.
