Divergent #0.4

The Traitor

Rate this book
The Traitor takes place two years after The Son and runs parallel with the early events in Divergent. In this robust story, readers follow Tobias as he uncovers the details of an Erudite plan that could threaten the faction system, and makes plans of his own to keep Abnegation safe. At the same time, Tobias is getting to know a new transfer initiate: Tris Prior.

All The Feels.

Four has been working steadily for two years as an instructor now, gathering clues about the secret dealings between Dauntless and Erudite, while keeping contact with Evelyn. It all changes when a new initiate enters with the new year’s litter; a stiff from Abnegation, called Beatrice Prior, or “Tris”.

By far the better of all the entries. In this last installment we pretty much get to see everything that transpires within the first book of Divergent; from the beginning of the training, until the escape from Dauntless, but through the eyes of Four. How Tris came into his life, , and how they saved each other.

Aw! It was so incredibly stirring to see Tris again, especially after the ending of Allegiant! All the feels.

Because this book runs parallel with the early events in "Divergent", minor spoilers may occur.

"How is it possible to live the same story twice, from different vantage points?"

This last Four story left me so conflicted, and I have no idea how to write this review.

description

In this story, we follow Tobias as he struggles with the revelations from the previous stories, as well as some new information, while he´s getting to know Tris Prior.
Strong, brave, iron-backboned Tris, who (at least in Divergent) is one of my all-time-favorite heroines.

“Fear doesn’t shut you down,” I say. “It wakes you up. I’ve seen it. It’s fascinating.” Her eyes in every fear simulation, ice and steel and blue flame. The short, slight girl with the wire-taut arms. A walking contradiction.

description

To see their relationship evolve throughout this short story from Fours point of view was so much fun.

"Maybe she and I are the same."

"but openness is a habit you form over time, and not a switch you flip whenever you want to"

“See if you can figure out why they call me Four.”
The door closes behind us, and the room is black. She moves closer to me and says, “What’s your real name?”
“See if you can figure that out, too.”

"All I have to do is follow her, that’s all I have to do."

description

And that kiss!

description

At the start of this story, it seemed like Four was influenced by the opinions of others, and for a moment I wanted to slap him because it was so unlike the character we´ve seen before. But even if we know the right thing to do, his internal struggles are understandable, based on what he´s gone through. Warn Abnegation and betray your new faction. Don´t warn them, and betray his former faction.

"It wasn’t getting the tattoos that made me a faction traitor. It was what they meant to me—an escape from the narrow thinking of any one faction, the thinking that slices away at all the different parts of me, paring me down to just one version of myself."

"maybe I failed them when I chose Dauntless, and maybe I’m failing Dauntless now, but I don’t have to fail myself. And I, no matter what faction I’m in, know the right thing to do."

description

This story is definitely a fitting conclusion to Fours short-stories.

Q:
She’s not learning the lessons Eric wants her to learn. She’s learning different things, wiser ones. (c)
Q:
Why do all dead people become heroes in Dauntless? Why do we need them to? Maybe they’re the only ones we can find in a faction of corrupt leaders, competitive peers, and cynical instructors. Dead people can be our heroes because they can’t disappoint us later; they only improve over time, as we forget more and more about them. (c)
Q:
So if loyalty is impossible, what do I strive for instead? (c)

This was my favorite among all the novellas probably because Tris is here. It was before all of her stupidity.

3 Faction before Blood ★'s

“Panic and terror aren't the only kinds of fear. There are deeper kinds, more terrible kinds. Apprehension and heavy, heavy dread.”

“I need to talk to someone. I need to trust someone. And for whatever reason, I know, I know it's her.”

The Traitor run parallel to the first part in Divergent. I enjoy reading these novellas from Fours POV but damn... These last two were boring and make Four look/sound weak which contradicts everything he was in the Divergent series. It was nice reading about how Tris and Four met and them getting to know each other but through his eyes. Four struggles with the decision to either betray his faction and warn Abnegation about the upcoming attack or to betray his former faction and tell Abnegation.

The Traitor is where Four meets Tris and we get to know how he feels about Tris from his POV. I liked it but I didn't love it because I have never liked Tris's character.

I love all these short stories from Four's POV. Only if the whole Divergent series could have been from Four's POV that would have been great. I know initially, it was supposed to be from Four's POV but it never went ahead. Oh Well!

“I am not a perfect Dauntless member; I am someone who believes that more than one virtue should be prized; I am Divergent.”
― Veronica Roth, The Traitor

Fantastic. I cannot get enough of the Divergent books and this one, "The Traitor" had me on the edge of my seat. Four is such an awesome narrator and I loved the book. Note: it is pretty short and probably be read in an hour or two if you are a fast reader.

It was somewhat rushed to make everything fit into the limited number of pages, but I guess I was hoping for a little more than just that.

This one was hard to read. Honestly. I don’t even know what to say about it. I accepted , but I wasn’t ready to have it flaunted in my face with this recap of Divergent from Four’s perspective. It literally hurt to read.

«Her hands move over my back and I want her, in a way I haven’t felt before, not just some kind of mindless physical drive but a real, specific desire. Not for “someone,” just for her.»

It was also very moving reading about Four’s struggles to either betray his faction and warn the Abnegation of the attack or betray his former faction and leave his father to die.

“Dead people can be our heroes because they can’t disappoint us later; they can only improve over time, as we forget more and more about them”.

In the final short story about Four he faces some hard choices. He face his fears, he opens up and he tries to do what is right.

Giving us these four stories really build up his character, and I am glad I took the time to revisit a story that meant a lot to me as a teen.

The Traitor chronologically covers events from Divergent through Four's perspective.

Given my feelings about Divergent, this leaves the story little room to excel as it treads its beaten path. What we get reminds me a little of Midnight Sun or The Other Half of the Grave in how it tries to do damage control for its love interest:
"My first instinct is to push you until you break, just to see how hard I have to press," I say, and it's a strange admission, and a dangerous one. I don't mean her any harm, and never have, and I hope she knows that's not what I mean.
He thinks this as if he isn't inches from her and capable of clarifying. It's so silly.

Surprisingly, Al's suicide gets covered, too. It's good to see the repugnant way his suicide was handled in Divergent has informed her rewrite. Here, Four takes responsibility for being an inadequate instructor — he was far more interested in his own personal drama, flirting with one of the initiates, and office politics to notice an at risk sixteen-year-old. It's a healing moment that makes these shorts worth it —

And then it's ruined:
Al would not have died in Abnegation, and he would not have attacked her there, either. They may not be as purely good as I once believed—or wanted to believe—but they certainly aren't evil, either.
Yes, this very Dauntless-specific situation couldn't be repeated in Abnegation. Obviously.

But the feeling of hopelessness and isolation that can lead to suicide? How well would Abnegation, a faction that would call any self-care vanity, deal with mental illness? Or, like Tris, someone withdrawn from the faction for not living up to their ideals? Or, domestic abuse, as Tobias can personally attest? It's a stupid distinction and I'm actually disappointed.

We also get to experience Four's fear landscape for the three billionth time. For the love of good writing, stop it.

After that, Four tries to warn his father about the Erudite's plan to attack Abnegation. Scenes between Four and Marcus have always been the weakest for me, and this interaction feels like it was made up to explain why Four never tried to warn Abnegation in the first place, and it does so poorly.

The Marcus of the trilogy would have asked more questions; he would have attempted to be more manipulative. But since Roth can't outright rewrite the outcome of what happens, it amounts a petty back and forth before Four leaves.

Why is it such a big deal?, I mean, we knew he was a "traitor" in the FIRST BOOK, why making this watching-things from computer such a BIG DEAL, he never really liked his faction anyway, and that my friends is a FACT! This one was actually boring. Again, I'll take Zeke and Shauna, the rest can burn.

None of this shorts tell you something worth it. FANS, YOU WILL LOVE THEM, SO GO AHEAD, DO NOT LET ANYONE TELL YOU NOT TO READ THIS. For the rest of the people, yes, it sucks!

What the hell is up with this series and it's obsession with Four and his four stupid fears?! It's like we can't go a single book or novella without taking a trip through it. It wasn't all that clever or entertaining the first time I read it what makes you think I'll like constant rehashing and copy pasting it into other works?

There is, once again, nothing new to see here folks. I had assumed that these were supposed to give deeper insight into this character, but they don't. Probably because there is no depth to him hence why the author has to keep beating in that he has four fears and his dad's an ass.

The little tidbits we do learn just make him a bigger ass. Basically, he knew about major plot points during the original books but couldn't be assed to do anything about them. Just know that anything that was a dramatic reveal in the Divergent trilogy he already knew about. He knew that there was going to be an attack on the Abnegation but couldn't figure out what to do so just shrugged it off and eye humped Tris instead.

Yeah, I can totally see why girls love this loser.
