Jeff Christopher is a shapeshifter and ally of Chicago’s Cadogan House of vampires—he’s also a tech whiz and mostly-legal hacker. And the only protective shields he’s never been able to find a way around are those of the powerful Keene Family.
For a long time, Jeff has only had eyes for the beautiful Fallon Keene. Unfortunately, she is the only sister of the lethal North American Central Pack Apex Gabriel Keene. The intricate balances of power and politics make it all but impossible for Fallon to trust her feelings.
But fate takes a hand when the Pack’s totem is stolen—threatening the Keene family’s rule—and Fallon enlists Jeff’s help to retrieve it before the Pack is thrown into chaos. Can she and Jeff find the totem, and restore order, before it’s too late? And will Jeff finally be able to prove himself to the only person he truly loves?

3 Stars!! I'm disappointed...30% of the book was a preview of the next book in the series...I paid for Jeff and Fallon's story!!
I waited so long to read more about Jeff and see how his relationship with Fallon would play out, and while I enjoyed most of it, it could have been so much more. It barely got off the ground and then it ended. What I did enjoy was getting a peek into The Pack and finding out more about the chain of command. They've been somewhat of a mystery in this series, one that I wanted to find out more about, and it satisfied some of my curiosity, but not nearly enough.
I wish the author had dedicated the entire short to the characters that this book was supposed to be about, and left the preview chapters to be read on her blog, or to sample on Amazon! I'm sure a lot of it was the publisher's doing...KA-CHING!! $$$$$
I fell in love with Jeff from the beginning of the series and I was quite excited that he was going to get his story even though in a short novella.
I was so disappointed. We don’t get much about him really….it’s not even from his POV but Fallon…half the story is the set up for the next book in the series. And the first half????
Well, apart from knowing he’s a tiger shifter, that he’s in love with Fallon, sister of Gabriel Keene and second in line for the Apex position of the North American Central Pack, who is a wolf shifter….which is a taboo pairing….we saw nothing of his funny side!!! It was all serious business here!!!
Jeff and Fallon spend their time as star-crossed lovers…something like Romeo and Juliet lovers….he trying to sway the shifter pack to accept him and she to decide what she must give up for her love for him. In between they run around trying to find the very important and stolen pack crown.
And just when I started to get into their story….and having warmed up to Fallon being Jeff’s true love…..we have another story going on.!!! I wish that this story had been more about Jeff….I did not get enough of him.
Now, looking forward to Wild Things, the next Chicagoland Vampires adventure.
Fallon is the sister of Gabriel Keene and she is second in line to become Apex (leader) of the North American Central Pack. As much as she has feelings for Jeff she knows she can never act on them because there is no way a tiger shifter would be considered an acceptable mate for a potential Apex. When the Apex crown is stolen, threatening Gabriel's hold over the pack, Fallon and Jeff have to work together to try find the culprit before anyone else realises what has happened. Can Jeff use the time they're forced to spend together to convince Fallon that he is worth taking a risk on?
I have loved Jeff since the beginning of the series so I was excited to find out that Chloe Neill had written this novella starring him and couldn't wait to read it. We've met Fallon in previous books but she wasn't a character I was particularly invested in so I have to admit I was surprised to find out that the story was written from her POV. I'd been hoping for Jeff's POV since he's such a fun character and I'm going to admit it was a bit disappointing to have someone else narrating the story.
While this novella was a fast read I have to say it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Firstly I was disappointed to find that the story finishes at 58% on the kindle version so rather than the 102 pages I was expecting you actually get less than 60 so it's over very quickly (the rest of the ebook is sample chapters from other books in the series). On top of that the story didn't have the humour that I expected knowing Jeff was a main character, his personality has always shone in previous books but it felt lacking somehow in this novella. It wasn't until the last few pages that I finally thought we were seeing the Jeff we know and love so you can imagine how shocked I was when the novella abruptly ended at that point.
I'm not going to say I hated this novella but I don't think it was worth the money I paid for it and I was left feeling disappointed. I still love this series and I'm looking forward to reading the next book but I'm sad about this story because I think it could have been so much better.
FYI: You can read a deleted scene from Howling for You (written from Jeff's POV!!) on Chloe Neill's website here: http://www.chloeneill.com/?p=4060
-The plot was fairly entertaining but I wasn't impressed with how predictable it was. There weren't any twists or turns - I knew who the bad guy would be, I knew what he was going to do, and I knew what his cliched motives were. It was all so obvious. Also, Fallon and Jeff's romance played out exactly how I expected… It was still nice to read about though.
-Fallon and Jeff were both likeable - I preferred them and the shifters over Merit/Ethan and the vampires — they were far more interesting… Or maybe they just seemed that way because I'm utterly bored of Merit and all her repetitive vampire drama.
-I enjoyed the romance, it was a tiny bit angsty because Fallon/Jeff weren't allowed be together due to them being different types of shifters and Fallon having to mate with another wolf as she was next in line to be alpha. It was a bit anti-climactic when they decided to break the rules and get together — the whole pack was happy for them and Gabe was cool with the relationship. I guess there could be no drama or conflict since it was a novella and everything had to be tied up neatly.
-I think I would have preferred if the story had instead focused on Fallon and Jeff actually falling in love instead of them already being in love - I kind of have no idea why or how they fell for each other.
-I was pissed that Fallon had to give up being second in line for alpha just so she could be with Jeff. I'm sick of the amount of female characters not being able to have both power and love, they always end up having to choose one or the other. Ugh.
-Gabe was meant to be an intelligent and cunning alpha so why was he so daft (or so bloody unaware) that he talked about the one-of-a-kind-uber-important-powerful crown in front of someone he barely knew?! It made him seem incompetent and dumb.
-I'm bored of the amount of UF/PNR characters that bang on about their love for coffee. It annoys me now whenever a MC mentions how addicted to caffeine they are. Who cares? It's not endearing or interesting to read about.
-Fallon and Jeff were a cute couple, I hope they feature more in the main novels - I'd rather read about them than Ethan/Merit or Catcher/Mallory's lame relationships.
A cute short story about one of my favorite characters in the Chicagoland Vampire series: Jeff. Dorky, gamer, computer genius, and completely lovable. Jeff is always funny and light-hearted in the series. He is also a shifter who turns into a tiger. And, that's the problem, because the girl he loves, Fallon, is a werewolf and the next in line to inherit the throne. She's a were-princess, I guess. That's even cooler.
wrong name, right image...
Fallon is a badass werewolf princess. "you're not at all what I expected." "What did you expect?" "A debutante, I guess...Less serious. More giggly." "I'm definitely not giggly. But I can kill a man in forty-two different ways."
You go girl!
So, the problem is that Jeff and Fallon are not allowed to be together. Being different species in their animal forms. It seems a little racist.
Pack protocol - pack tradition - said shifters who transformed into different animals shouldn't be together.
Sheesh! Of course mixed marriages are wrong! Next thing you know they are going to want gay marriage or something..... oh, oh yeah.
oh shit, all hope is gone people! Look at the horrors that gay marriage will rain down upon us!
There is also a "mystery" in this short story. But, it is pretty lame. If it wasn't for being a Jeff-book, it wouldn't fly. But, since it is Jeff, I'll allow it.
After reading Wicked Hour I do feel like this novella serves an essential role in series development, especially leading up to "Heirs of Chicagoland" (no spoilers here). I still stand by this review - this is probably the weakest book in the series - but I don't think it's meaningless.
***Original Review***
Oh man.
I don't even know what the point of this novella was.
Fallon is 2nd in line to become Pack Apex, meaning she is the "first possible female Apex in the history of the North American Central." As potential Apex, Fallon's fam and Pack expects 1) for Fallon to settle down with a mate, and 2) for that that mate to be a shifter of the same animal type (wolf). Fallon is in love with Jeff (tiger), but can't even think about being with him because she would have to abdicate her claim as Apex, a role she has been training for her entire life. And, eventually, SHE DOES 🤮. Fallon "chooses love over power," forfeiting her claim to the throne to her younger brother. Yuck.
Okay, maybe Fallon ultimately decided, actually, I don't want to be Apex. But I still hate it. She doesn't seem to give much thought to the significance of her being the first female Apex (and, okay, whatever, she doesn't owe anyone anything), but I really wish she would have at least fought to be with Jeff (someone who is essentially of a different race, shifter racism) AND be Apex.
Fallon confronts her brother, the current Apex:
""I'm done with potentials. I'm not going to meet any more of them. I'm going to date who I want to date, regardless of the type of shifter he is. And I'll give up my place in the line of succession if that's what it takes."
He looked at me, jaw clenched and twitching. "Is this your way of rebelling?"
"Of course not." It was, of course, but not in the way he meant. It was a rebellion against what we'd been taught, about who I'd been taught to be. But it wasn't a rebellion for the sake of rebellion. It was about, for the first time, being true to myself."
UGHH. FALLON. If you're going to rebel, why not go all the way!? Fallon is in a position where she could potentially to change and influence many other shifters' lives - as 1st female Apex and loving someone of a different "shifter race". Instead, she abdicates, essentially conceding to the Pack's traditions and prejudices.
Not to mention that Apex Gabe doesn't for a second think: "Maybe Fallon, who has been training to lead the pack for years, is a more appropriate heir than my infant son. Maybe it doesn't fucking matter who she dates, she can still be a capable leader. And maybe, since we're all shifters and in the same Pack, we shouldn't have these arbitrary, antiquated rules about who can/can't marry whom." But, no, not at all. Gabe crowns his son and makes his brother 2nd in line.
Finally, the story structure makes no sense. It goes from drama about who Fallon can love to a short-lived coup attempt to Fallon's abdication to Fallon and Jeff JUGGLING (literally juggling) and having brief, underwhelming sex.
Y'all, I love this series, but this book... At least it was short.

This was an entertaining enough story, if very short.
I was expecting a story from Jeff’s POV and was very pleasantly surprised when it turned out Fallon was the narrator. I really like her character and I hope we get to see a lot more of her in CV instalments to come.
The plotline in itself is a bit on the light side, focusing on Fallon and Jeff’s relationship (and why they can’t be together). There is some light investigating going on after the Keenes’ crown is stolen, with Fallon and Jeff trying to retrieve it.
What I liked best about Howling for You? Definitely Fallon and the Keene family: I’ve always loved Gabe and Berna (here she is reading Twilight for the 14th time!) and now I’m adding Ben to the list as well. This pack really deserves a series of its own!
One of the main problems here is the lack of chemistry between Fallon and Jeff. It was alright but the sparks were far from flying, light years away from Methan! The final love scene felt really meh and terribly unexciting. Jeff doesn’t shine as much here as he does in regular instalments of the series, he doesn’t seem to be the same person at all.
I also have to say I was very disappointed by the shortness of the story. It only takes up 60% of the book when the rest is a preview for Some Girls Bite… I turned the page expecting the story to continue but no, that was it… Annoying to say the least!
I guess (and hope!) we might be seeing more of Fallon in the main CV series and this short story does help to know her better. Howling for You is a nice enough read but nothing out of this world. For hardcore CV fans only!
"When was it taken?" "Forty-two minutes ago." "Five-thirty in the damn morning? Who wakes up to steal a crown at five-thirty in the damn morning?"
I totally understand the sentiment.
3.5 stars
I have to admit, this short story was quite disappointing. Jeff is one of my favorite CV characters and I was looking forward to his story. However, it was too rushed, even for a short story. I felt like we deserved more. And I absolutely don't understand why would Gabriel
Anyhow, I wish Jeff and Fallon lifetime of happiness, because it's not their fault this novella was so rushed.
"Howling for You" is Fallon Keene and Jeff Christopher's story in the Chicagoland Vampire Series.
The two have always been attracted to each other; but, since Fallon is second born and next in line as Apex for the Keene pack she is forbidden to take a mate other than that of a potential. Unfortunately, because Jeff is not a potential, he does not qualify.
It is the eve of the coronation for Gabriel Keene's son to be crown; so, the cornet has been delivered for the ceremony.However, that same night it is stolen. Gabriel immediately puts Fallon and Jeff on the case. If it falls into the hands of another pack it could be the downfall of the Keene's dynasty.
If I am to be totally honest, I will admit that the past couple of Chicagoland Vampire Book have been hit or miss with me. Unfortunately, Howling for You is just a middle of the road read. It was neither good nor bad. The chemistry between Jeff and Fallon was just okay and the love making was lukewarm at best. I don't care how an author has the characters proclaim, "Oh, that is amazing," if it isn't written amazingly or hot, it is just lip service. Sorry, Ms. Neill but you need to work on your sex/love making writing style.
Jeff is that character in the Chicagoland series that you love, he is smart and I love how much he flirts with Merit. With this short story we got to see a different side of Jeff. I have liked Jeff's crush on Fallon, it was cute. Turns out there is more on that on both sides. I hated that Fallon wouldn't let things happen with Jeff because if her family, her place in the pack, and that Jeff wasn't a wolf. It caused both of them to be unhappy.
I thought the action of "who done it" to be interesting. I totally bought into who we were supposed to and was stunned like the pack when the bad guy did show up. I loved that it was Jeff who had the big fight and got back the precious item. But even better was the decision that Fallon made, it was a long time coming and surprised no one.
Shapeshifter Fallon Keene is second in line to become the leader of the North American Central Pack. She takes her duty seriously. Therefore, she is willing to date various wolf shifters that her family trots in front of her, even though her heart is taken by Jeff Christopher, a tiger shapeshifter who is also her best friend. When the Apex Crown is stolen, Fallon and Jeff work together to find the thief before the Keene family is overthrown as the leaders of the pack.
This novella is a spin-off of the Chicagoland Vampires series. The theme is love vs. duty. I was highly entertained by this story. Just wish it could have been a lot longer. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
When shapeshifters first appeared on CV, I wasn't fond of the new storyline. I'm just more of a vampire girl, what can I say? But I have grown to love the Pack, and Fallon and Jeff are no exception.
I honestly really liked this novella, it was just very Chloe Neill and this world, regardless of the lack of vamps. Fallon is badass and I'm as immune to Jeff as everyone else, which is not at all. However, he just will never compete with Ethan for me. The blonde can be damn annoying, but he's my type of annoying.
I loved this Jeff and Fallon short story! A short quick read, but I loved seeing them work together and move forward with their relationship! I still can't believe that Gabe didn't bend a bit more though... really Jeff is better for "The Pack" than the suitors he was trying to set her up with. I was honestly waiting for it to be some kind of test, as in if she loves him that much and he wants her with or without the crown then he's in and she doesn't need to abdicate.

I really like Jeff and I think that Neill could do a break away series on the shifters and have many many followers. Jeff is one of those fun loving, hold you close and love to live kind of guys. Reading about him and Fallon was interesting and I could actually go for more of it. Maybe Chloe was testing the waters with this little piece of delight. We shall see if she takes it anywhere.
I really liked seeing Jeff outside of Merit's investigations here. Yes, it is a pack investigation but it is apart, so we see him in his own light. It is told in Fallon's POV but we get the perspective of Jeff, through her, all the same. Their romance is sweet, especially the ending.
This novella exists to explain how tiger-shifter Jeff Christopher cements his relationship with Fallon Keene, only sister and 2nd in the line to be the next pack leader if something happened to Gabriel. Now that Gabriel has a son, Fallon really isn't the 2nd in the line but his son is still an infant. Which means that Fallon must still meet prospects. This time the prospect is from an old, old family who has been largely out of politics for years. The spark between them is weak at best. Which is fine with Fallon since she isn't interested in anyone but Jeff. But then the crown is stolen and suddenly there is more at stake for Fallon than just who is the Apex of the pack. Neill "packs" a lot into this story which provides interesting insight into how shifter packs operate. I like that her worldbuilding is different from others.
A small short-story about the relationship between Jeff our favorite cute geek and Falon the badass sister of Gabriel =D I loved to see them FINALLY get together and all that with a plot full of shifter politics x) Same complaint however as usual for the short-stories, it was TOO SHORT !!! (even if, the plot was twisted =))
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Une petite nouvelle sur la relation entre Jeff notre geek tout mignon préféré et Falon la soeur badass de Gabriel =D J'ai adoré les voir ENFIN se mettre ensemble et tout ça avec une intrigue sur fond de politiques de shifter x) Même reproche toutefois que d'habitude pour les nouvelles, c'était TROP COURT !!! (même si pour une nouvelle aussi court, l'intrigue était bien tordue =))
What a great addition to the Chicagoland series. I love Jeff and I have liked seeing him with Fallon, but getting their whole story and dynamic was phenomenal. Also, I love Gabriel so getting more of him is just icing on the cake. I was definitely suspicious of the right people through the story, but I still couldn't have quite predicted the way things would all work out. Wonderful bonus story to this series!
Although this was simply too short to showcase the awesomeness that is Jeff & Fallon, I still loved it 💖 Getting a glimpse into pack life, love, and loyalty makes me long for a Chicagoland Shifters series with Jeff & Fallon front & center where they belong!!
