The pharaohs who created such great monuments as the Valley of the Kings and the temples at Karnak have been the subject of many books. But there has been little written for the general reader about the lives of ordinary Egyptians - the bureaucrats, scribes, craftsmen, and farmers - who were also part of this great civilization. In this book, T.G.H.James shows us in fascinating details what paintings and inscriptions from tombs and temples, official archives, private correspondence, accounts, and dispatches reveal aboutthe lives of men and women who lived more than three thousand years ago.

James details the trials, accomplishments, and degradations of ancient Egypt's people. He relates the periodic horrors of droughts and famines, with attendant breakdown of order. But mainly he shows how massive primitive engineering efforts usually averted such disasters. The district governors often praised their own diligence in irrigation work. Governor Akhtoy, who presided over Upper Egyptian Nome XIII in the difficult years after the fall of the Old Kingdom, claims he made the flood reach the parched areas with new dikes and canals: “I nourished my city: I made the ordinary workman into someone who ate barley.” Then Akhtoy makes what should be his proudest boast of all: “I made spittle possible in the middle of the day” (p. 116)

On the dry side, but an inherently fascinating topic, and packed with primary source quotes and translations.
