All The Best Lines

Rate this book
Pithy put-downs, hard-boiled snarlings, words of love and regret... ALL THE BEST LINES presents 500 memorable movie quotes, embracing both one-liners ('My name is Pussy Galore') and slices of snappy dialogue from pictures as diverse as When Harry Met Sally and Pulp Fiction. Arranged under such timeless themes as Dreams, Friends, Libido and Memories, the quotes juxtapose films and stars from every era and every genre.

Dotted throughout the text are feature capsules focusing on themes and stories in the movies from Goldwynisms to Mae West, plus a generous scattering of cinema anecdotes, making the book both a joy to browse and an authoritative reference.

Lavishly illustrated with full-colour photographs, ALL THE BEST LINES will delight and entertain you in equal measure, reacquainting you with your favourite movies and introducing you to some forgotten classics.

All those great lines of dialogue in so many movies and it's never clear who wrote them.... the screenwriters, the rewrite guys, the last minute punch-up guys, could be anybody. Whole different thing to a book. When it says Graham Greene on the cover you're pretty sure he wrote all the stuff inside. It's not like that in Hollywood. So this is just a big anthology of hundreds of zingers and profound musings and so forth from all our favourite films.

Your idea of fidelity is not having more than one man in bed at the same time.

Were you always this stupid or did you take lessons?

How did you feel after you shot your husband?
Hungry.

He couldn't find a prayer in the Bible.

You're never around when I need you.
You never need me when I'm around.

Those who are easily shocked should be shocked more often.

There are also tiny articles about all kinds of interesting things, like Taglines - you remember the famous ones -

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.

In space no one can hear you scream.

Houston, we have a problem.

But here we learn of some less successful taglines :

Today the pond. Tomorrow the world. (Frogs)

Unwittingly, he trained a dolphin to kill the President of the United States. (The Day of the Dolphin)

The Only thing More Terrifying than the last 12 Minutes of this Film are the First 92. (Suspiria)

Titans will Clash. (Clash of the Titans)

so..... recommended for all movie fans. It's just another excellent timewasting thing to read while you should have been powering through The Brothers Karamazov.

a disappointingly mediocre overview of the "best lines" in cinema history. it was fine I guess but someone needs to tell Tiffin there is more to cinema than just golden age Hollywood. the best and most enriching parts of this book were the sections where he talked in detail about the context of different movements and genres, all the actual "best lines" sucked imo.
I'd say this is definitely worth reading if you want to learn more about mainstream English-language cinema in the 20th century, however PLEASE do not bother trawling through the pages and pages of quotes and just read the parts actually written by tiffin 💪

“All The Best Lines” by George Tiffin

Wonderful anthology of prominent and provocative quotes from the scripts of popular movies.
The font is in standard script format so adds to the charm of the book

"Of All The Gin Joints In All The Towns In All The World, She Walks Into Mine."
"We'll Always Have Paris."
"Round Up The Usual Suspects."
"I Think This Is The Beginning Of A Beautiful Friendship." - CASABLANCA
..

“A relationship, I think, is like a shark. You know? It has to constantly move forward or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark.” - Alvy Singer in ANNIE HALL
..

“Made it, Ma! Top of the world!” - Arthur Cody Jarrett in WHITE HEAT

A potted history of Hollywood recounted through the memorable lines spoken by heroes, villains, heroines, vamps, comedians, singers, robots, androids - and sometimes, even by the writers who wrote them!
George Tiffin is clearly a fan and trivia buff (not necessarily in that order!) and his passion shows in the pithy way he sets the context for each quote, the satisfying trivia he throws in with each quote and the quirky sections he breaks the book into. Another highlight is the set of short essays interspersing the book, covering topics like Hitchcock's cameos, Spielberg's adventures with Bruce, how writers write and how classics become classics.
Must read for fans of Hollywood!

So this book is bascially IMDB: The Book! But like... organised into themes etc and interested with essays and anecdotes on various Hollywood things.

There was entirely too much Woody Allen whose completely creeptastic-ness is only addressed with a brief illusion to as a "controversial" person. As well as a few mentions in the various themes, he always warrants a feature, which, ew. His 'controversy' is never addressed at all. Roman Polanski is also included and it's never mentioned that he's a convicted child rapist. Last Tango in Paris' anecdote reads as follows "Brando and his co-star Maria Schneider felt so 'raped' by their roles that they never spoke to director Bertolucci again"... which is a considerably understatement of what I understand occurred. The 'raped' being in talking marks is particularly disgusting considering Maria Schneider was alleged raped on set.

Ugh. But I guess the point is that this book is obviously put together by a film nerd who has decided to overlook or just not include the particular nastiness of some productions and Hollywood people for a light hearted look at iconic lines. I also found two printing errors. With Twilight listed as coming out in 1998 and the anecdote about the Wicked Witch being printed under the heading of a different film as opposed to the Wizard of Oz.

It was a fun read when I wasn't reading about paedophiles and rapists. I suppose I can be thankful for the lack of mention of Weinstein. The bar is on the fucking ground.

This book promised to be a little different to the standard movie quote book, but came up short. The additional essays and information, which were its selling point for me, were rambling and contained errors of fact that could be easily avoided. For example, saying Stagecoach won the Best Picture Oscar is a mistake that a few minutes of research could have corrected. It made for a frustrating experience because it seemed the author’s attitude was that the reader won’t know, so it doesn’t matter.

I've been reading this book of 'quotes, notes and anecdotes' periodically over the past few months after my friend gifted it to me. I really enjoyed reading all the lines in this and the way they were characterised, even from films I'd never seen or heard of before. Honestly, some things I read in here really make me want to watch the movies they originated from. I will admit I skipped some of the essays just because I wasn't particularly interested in the content of them but I genuinely enjoyed going through all those lovely lines. I have so many tabs in this book, yay!

This book was an inspired gift from my husband. It's fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable, and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in film and cinema but particularly to authors and budding scriptwriters. It contains script extracts from movies from the time talking pictures began to present day and peppers them with anecdotes and fascinating insights into life behind the scenes and behind the camera. Loved it!

Not just a record of classic film lines, but an interesting background to film writers and production
