Percy the park keeper always feeds the animals in the park where he lives. But one cold winter’s night Percy discovers that his little friends need more than food, and he must think of a way to help them find a warm place to sleep for the night. Percy’s hut is nice and warm, but he discovers that if you invite one animal in you’ll have to invite them all in. With Percy's small hut—they are certainly going to be squashed!
Nick Butterworth was born in London and grew up in a sweet shop in Essex. He worked for various major graphic design companies before becoming a full-time author and illustrator. Among his picture books are Thud!, QPootle5, Jingle Bells, Albert le Blanc, Tiger and The Whisperer, winner of the Nestlé Gold Award. But he is best known for his stories about Percy the Park Keeper, which have sold more than 9 million copies worldwide. Percy has also appeared in his own television series.
A delightful little tale that introduces everyones favourite park keeper.
All the animals know the little hut where Percy lives, he's always willing to share his lunch with them. During a particular cold night the various animals ask to seek shelter to hilarious effect.
The illustrations are so cute as poor Percy's bed starts to take the strain with each knock at the door. It's easy to see why this series has been delighted young readers for the last 30 years, the fold out poster at the back is a nice touch.
Lots of fun to be had in this story about a grounds keeper (park ranger?) who opens his cottage one snowy night to a variety of animals who want shelter from the storm. It's so funny when they all try to fit into the bed and start to fall out--will there be a place for everyone??? (Of course there will!) I enjoyed the British aspects in this tale, too, such as when our gent puts on his Wellingtons and when the hedgehog shows up at the door ;-) The illustrations are very cute.
Percy, a kindhearted park keeper who always shares his lunch with the park's animal residents, finds himself sharing even more one snowy night, as the animals knock on his door, one by one, seeking shelter. Inviting each one into the warmth of his little hut, Percy soon finds pandemonium breaking out, as all the animals struggle to share the comfortable bed with him. Then, just when things seem to have come to a head, there is a mysterious and (for some) frightening noise beneath the hut...
Apparently one of a series of picture-books about Percy the Park Keeper, One Snowy Night is a book that made it onto my to-be-read shelf thanks to the appealingly wintry scene on the cover. I have a real weakness for images of snow falling, if done right. Unfortunately, I discovered that the artwork within - particularly the human figure of Percy himself - did not quite live up to my expectations, based upon the cover image. The style was just a little too cartoonish for me, and with the exception of the depiction of a few of the animals characters, not very appealing. The story was cute, with its surprise ending, and I can see young readers really taking to it, but in the end, this just was not for me.
Oh! So *this* is why Butterworth is in 1001...! *So* sweet. Cliched and predictable, but with touches that make it special (like asking the fox to behave, and two pairs of wooly socks...). I've not been overly impressed by other Butterworth books, but I do want to find more about Percy.
Available on openlibrary.org. I just had a quick reread and it charmed me again.
Last night, I found myself not being able to go to sleep. I needed something a bit lighter than the other book which I am reading, so I picked up this one about Percy the park keeper. Percy lives in a small hut in the park. All of the animals know him, as he is happy to share his lunch with them. But one snowy night, the animals need something else. And, of course, Percy is only happy to help. This was a very cute story. The illustrations are lovely too, and I am sure that young readers will delight in all of the animals trying to find a place to rest. A charming little tale.
I remembered this series from when I was little so when I found the book in a charity shop I had to read it! A lovely little book featuring some gorgeous artwork which would definitely appeal to younger audiences! It definitely did for me when I was younger 🥰

This is my favourite picture book from childhood - the story is so warming and welcoming and I can still remember the cosy feeling it creates. The illustrations are wonderfully complimentary and Percy the Park Keeper is a well-loved protagonist. Although not challenging in its subject matter, it's the perfect book to read to children on a sleepy afternoon!
Such a cute book! All the animals in the park just want to cuddle up and find a warm shelter inside Percy the park keeper's house during a cold snowy night. The edition I read includes a large poster for kids to find hidden items inside Percy's house, which will surely delight young readers.
Here's my theory: the Percy the Park Keeper books are set after a nuclear apocalypse. Everywhere outside the park is irradiated, Z for Zachariah style which is why they (almost) never leave the park, Percy even living in his Park Keeper's hut. Percy is the last man on earth which is why no-one ever visits the park despite its extensive facilities, regularly maintained by Percy.
Oh, and Percy is also the heroin addict Park Keeper from Irvine Welsh's proto-Trainspotting novella A Smart C*nt which is why he thinks the animals are talking to him and how he maintains his good cheer in the face of his bleak existence.
I loved this book as a child and I recently brought it to read to my children. It was just as magical as the first I listened to it and my boys loved it that much they want me to buy the whole series.
I was about to buy this picture book, but my lovely friend Google found me a YouTube video, in which you can listen to a whole thing (you can check it right here http://youtu.be/vChCLsf6DEs, it's short (less than 10min) and has a great narrator (and you can see all of the pictures). Btw, he reminded me of the man, who narrated my version of Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien, will found his name later. Maybe it's him...). So, thank you, Google. You know, what I need (I can save a little and buy something else, yay!).
Overall, it was a lovely story of kindness and help. I really liked the art work as well (that page with mole... OMG, it's SO CUTE!). Can't say more than this, because my reviews will be the clichéest review ever. If you're looking for cute little wintery story to read to your kiddo and yourself, I can recommend this one. Especially, since you can do that for free.:)
Happy reading, folks! And DFTBA!
P.S. I'm into picture books atm, because I'm in love with them (thanks you for inspiration, Rose Mannering) and also because I have a flue and my brain can't process anything with more than 5-7 sentences per page. I need pictures! Hope everyone of you is healthy today.:)
First of all...is Butterworth his real last name??
Secondly, this is a sweet children's book centered around a park-keeper who lives in a "hut." My son was endlessly fascinated with the word hut. He had soooo mannnnny questions. ALL the questions. Mostly in the difference between cabins and huts. I've said it before, I'll say it again, kids are so weird.
So we talked a lot about huts. Other than that the book is about a bunch of cold animals asking to go inside to sleep in a warm place. My son adored how it ended (spoiler! All the animals get a snug place to sleep just perfect for them :) Adorable. Highly recommend as a sweet bedtime story.
My sister and I used to argue over this book...as we both loved it so much. a charming story about a park keeper unwittingly opening his doors to the parks animals during a snow storm.
Percy the park keeper feeds all the animals in the park where he lives. All the animals know where Percy’s cozy little house is and one night a squirrel knocks at the door. He tells Percy that his bed is full of snow! Percy invites him to come inside. Soon two rabbits, a fox, a badger, two ducks, a hedgehog, and a whole family of mice come along wanting to join the squirrel in Percy's warm bed.
Percy’s bed is too small for so many animals.
What will Percy do? How will all the animals stay warm? And where will they all sleep?

This charming bedtime story will entertain young readers. The targeted audience, ages two through six, will enjoy sharing the story with a grown-up. Giggles are sure to accompany the delightful story. The enchanting illustrations that accompany the story are sure to appeal to young and old alike.
I read this recently, even though it's a kids book, and still enjoyed it. It is about a park ranger who is going to bed one very cold night. Then, animals keep knocking on his door because of how cold they are. The ranger kindly allows them to stay, even though he has barely enough room. He even lets a fox in, even though there were squirrels and rabbits. This book teaches generosity, not judging, and kindness. I gave it 5 stars because of the cute story and cute pictures. Good for 1st grade and up.
Got it for my kids and not only they loved it but I truly enjoyed the nostalgia brought on by this book.
Percy the park keeper who lives in a little hut and share his food with the park animals, has to make rooms for the surprise guests on one snowy night. It feels cozy reading this story and the pull-out poster on last page is a lovely touch and fun.
A cosy bedtime story! The scratching noises under the floor boards really captivates my 3 year old's imagination. Beautiful illustration, lovely pull out poster. We now have the 2 more books from the collection.
