Despite all that’s come before, Hana and Nanase are back to their usual status quo. Hana’s school work, however, has taken a nosedive in light of everything going on with his crush, so Nanase steps in to save his bacon. She gets rewarded for her efforts, but can anything change while Hana is still hung up on his past?
Of course not! But that’s kind of the point of the book - Hana’s unrequited love flaming out is still fresh in his mind and there’s no switch he can just flip to start considering Nanase as a replacement (to say nothing of how unfair and unhealthy that would likely be).
That’s one of the things I like most about this series - it doesn’t just have a pointless obstacle in the way of our leads (yet), it has a very realistic one. Somebody who just had their heart broken takes time to get over these sorts of things and even if Hana is clearly taking a liking to Nanase, he’s got some more growing and healing to do before he sees her in a more romantic light.
I also really appreciate that Nanase isn’t pushing him - she’s made herself clear and wants to keep nudging Hana along, but while she’d be thrilled to be the object of his affection, she’s also his friend at the same time.
Speaking of, actual friends for both our leads get added in this time out and they bring some welcome extra perspective to things. The grumpy glasses geek girl on Hana’s side is a lot of fun and I really like that while Hana’s a loner at high school, he still has a robust friend group of people from his middle school.
The second half of the book is not as strong and shows that the series is not above swiping out of the shojo playbook when it wants. I mean, what’s the last shojo story where somebody didn’t end up in a yukata? I literally cannot think of one.
Even worse is what happens at the festival (because where else would yukatas emerge). This is one of the lamer plot beats in shojo, which I am unapologetically calling the Tropes Drunky Trial. Said event occurs when somebody unintentionally imbibes a minor quantity of alcohol and ends up three sheets to the wind.
In this case it mercifully isn’t a bunch of chocolates, merely an unknown drink (you’d think the class rep would know better), but end result is the same - loudmouth airing of grievances. I’m not thrilled that this seems to alter Hana’s perspective of Nanase a bit because it feels like a cheap way to advance the character dynamics.
I will admit that there IS one worthwhile scene from all this, where Nanase gets hit on by some guys who then chastise Hana, chasing after her, for not taking no for an answer when trying to pick up a girl. It’s a cute twist on that style of scene.
3 stars. Excellent chemistry between the leads and even with some genre staples (and a snore of a bonus story that basically rehashes things we already knew), the art’s gotten better and the story is still more unique than a lot of books in a similar vein. Not a triumph, but still a good little book.
I like this. Ok, so it's not original and it's not Gilbert and Sullivan...
... but it is amusing, and cute. Hana is such an interesting guy. Nanase has fallen so hard for him. He's continued to make it clear he's not over his crush on Sensei, and he claims he isn't looking for a relationship, yet he keeps spending more and more time with Nanase. He even visits her when she's sick, and strokes her hair and sings her to sleep (awww). You can see the wheels turning in his mind. He's becoming more comfortable with the idea of being around Nanase, both at school and elsewhere. They went to the fireworks festival together. Nanase looked so cute! Then Hana's friends slipped her alcohol, and she got drunk and acted like a fool. Yet she also said (loudly) how she feels about Hana, and neither thing pushed him away. In fact he held her and was even willing to get in a fight, just to make sure Nanase got home safely. Hana may still have his heart set on Sensei, but it's obvious he's becoming quite fond of Nanase. Let's hope things go smoothly between these two (but we know they won't, lol), and maybe Nanase can get Hana to realize that the love he so desires is sitting right next to him in class.
☀️ Contains Chapters 09 - 12: I am really enjoying this series so far and getting to see how the story is developing between Nanase and Hana Kun. The fireworks festival in chapter 11 was a lot of fun.
Chapter 09: Season of Beginnings Chapter 10: She's Something Else Chapter 11: A Special Day Chapter 12: Hana's Heart Special Short: When We're in Love (Extra)
