Fool's Gold #13

When We Met

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery invites you back to Fool's Gold, where a newcomer to town might finally meet the man she never knew she needed…

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can't be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool's Gold, California, he's cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he's not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe to toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

I'm in OCD hell and this is the first series that I think might break me. It's like pure hell to not be able to get myself to stop. Last night was one of a few times in the years since I was diagnosed with OCD that I have cried and that just pisses me off. But hey only 7 more books to go then I am done forever!!!

This is 13th in a series and lots of characters and setup and stuff from those previous books crop up. You can probably start with this one if you like, but you'll know you're missing stuff.

Sigh. I'm so sick of the guy being an emotionally-challenged idiot. Angel is otherwise quite awesome. Taking on a pack of little girls (in a pseudo-scouting type thing) was beyond endearing and some of those scenes were heartwarming gold. But the entire novel Angel is mooning over not having "protected" his wife and kid. They died when he wasn't even in the country and he repeats, over and over, "I should have been there". Because apparently, in his world, hovering over people as a constant protection against life is a thing you do. It's stupid and it's constant and it's one of those negative motivations* that kill plot dead.

Taryn is also awesome in her own way. I love that she's all about style and that she wrangles her "boys" and that they're respectful and maybe a little afraid of her. I love that she's up to the challenge of Angel even as she's eager to fall in with his plans. And her helping with the girl pack thing was a significant part of that heartwarming gold. So it really sucks that she's all "I can't trust anybody ever because I'm just so damaged by my abusive father" the entire story. It's stupid and it's constant and it's one of those negative motivations* that kill plot dead.

So we had two very lovely people who belong together both chomping on that "oh no, we can't possibly be together" theme and it was loads and loads of constant stupidity. A friend suggested today that we should open a therapy practice for romance novel characters and we could rake in the money. She's not wrong. Plus, we'd be removing a bunch of negative motivations* so that authors would be free to explore plots with characters who actually want things. Trust me, authors, this is a freeing development.

Anyway, this is a 2½ star story that I'm rounding up on account of Angel braiding hair with a pack of 8 year-olds.

A note about Steamy: There are a couple of explicit sex scenes, putting this (barely) in the middle of my steam tolerance. They were actually one of the more stellar parts of the story and part of what showed how compatible and right for each other they really are.

* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.

Every year around the same time Ms Mallery publishes three stories in which we get to visit Fool’s Gold. It’s like going away on holiday to the same place every year for a visit and catch up with people who have become friends, to find out what their has happened in the last year and how things have changed.

In this we get to read Angel and Taryn’s story. Angel had admired Taryn from afar for a while and finally decided the time was right to let her know he was interested in her, Taryn was more than ready for Angel’s attention as she had noticed him too. Both have troubled histories and for their own reasons only want a fling with no complications, but things don’t always go to plan!

We also got to catch up with loads of the ‘older’ characters and see what has been happening in their lives, there are too many to mention but those such as Felicity (the super intelligent scientist who married Gideon and became mother to his son Carter - you remember her?)…. She is pregnant now and seems like pregnancy hormones gone to her head as she is even scattier than normal :)) Denise (the Hendrix matriarch) and of course Mayor Marsha – that woman sure does seem to have special powers. We also spend more time getting to know more about Taryn’s colleagues, the three football jocks and get an idea who their love interests will be and an idea of how their romances will go.

Susan Mallery has been a favourite of mine for years and of course I have had favourite books of hers over those years, but the Fool’s Gold series has to come top of my list…Next up is Sam and Dellina’s story in Before We Kiss.

So I feel like to do a rant review what perfect book than this? THIS BOOK SUCKED

I admit I have a fault in this unfortunate reunion, I mean this is the 13th book in a series, yet in my defense is fluffy romance and they are supposed to be standalone. But from the moment I started I was so lost, couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. SO I was 9% into the book and the pull shit against the lgbtqia+ community, no thank you, they thought a person falling for a transgender person was an insult and a joke you could pull off, WELL NO. Second, this 40-year-old man, supposedly super tough alpha couldn't handle a talk and about menstruation, for some reason, it fucking bothered me so much. The female friendship was pointless, literally, you could have read the first conversation in the book and you wouldn't have to read all the others, they were all the same! And lastly to put the cherry on top here a leave you with two quotes from the book demonstrating how sexist it was, UGH!
"Angel nodded as she spoke, more interested in what she wore than what she said,"
"Angel was willing to admit he was just as secretly sexist as the next man"

The main character was just as annoying don't worry, almost 50% of this book consisted of clothing description of the main character and how her 9 inches heels were so attractive for fucking ;) (internal gag)

SO BAD, PEACE OUT.

Can I just move to Fools Gold now? Please??! Lordy but Mallery can weave together a wonderful romance that leaves a girl wistful and completely sated. *nods* And When We Met was no exception as girly, yet tough as nails, Taryn and the oh so sexy Angel take each other on and find true love. *swoons*

So the gist is that Taryn and Angel are both pretty new to the town and, well, neither's really looking for love--they're just trying to adjust and build their new lives-- but there's an attraction between them they just can't resist and seeing as the other isn't interested in long term..really what would be the harm in giving things a little look-see together as they get involved in the town and end up needing each other's help just a little bit.

The two were just perfect together. Neither thinks they have it in them to love but slowly they break each others walls down and they become friends. There's something sweet about them together. They keep each other on their toes, play some games with each other (not in a bad way) and every once in a while things get a little steamy. There's not a ton happening in that department but what's there is nice and oh the sexual tension leading up to everything is yummeh!
"You're saying I get to you?"

"Why would you think otherwise?"

Because every woman had doubts, she thought. She put her hand on top of his. "Now what?"

"Now we order dinner."

He pulled back his hand, then reached up and tucked her hair behind her ear. He leaned in close enough for her to feel his breath on her cheek, then he spoke very quietly.

"Of course I want you, Taryn. I'm breathing, aren't I? Because it would take being dead to not want you. You told me you wanted me to work for it and I'm more than willing to do that. To wait to feel your skin against mine, your mouth, your breasts, all of you. But when we are together, it's going to be my way. It's going to be slow. There won't be an inch of you I won't touch, won't please. I want to learn everything you like and then figure out how to do it so well I can make you come anytime, anywhere. And I will."
---
He slipped his hand through her long black hair and cupped the back of her head. "I want you," he breathed. "And I'll wait."

I totally loved Angel. He's older--40ish--and established. He's rocking some confidence, is upfront and just sexy as hell. This is a man that knows exactly what he's doing and does it very well. As much as he has it together he's also scared and trying to move on from the loss of his family in a horrible accident. There were some scenes with him that just about gutted me as he dealt with his losses. Whew. There were some amazingly endearing moments as well as he takes on a volunteer gig with a group of kids and ends up being the papa bear for a group of little girls. I mean. I totally melted over him and his go with the flow self.

Taryn was an interesting one. She's a bit of a ball buster and not used to men standing up to her. I liked her even if she was a bit clothes obsessed which did get to be a little too much description-wise for me. She's not the shy type in any way really and I enjoyed watching this city girl adjust to small town life. She's got a good heart--even if she wants to deny it--and cares for others--much to her dismay. And it was rather entertaining watching her reactions to things.

The town made for a charming and sweet backdrop for their romance. Parades, quirky friends and meddling from all sides. I really enjoyed seeing Angel and Taryn with their own friends and the people they considered their families as well as seeing them together. It was just a nice feeling overall and somewhere I'd love to visit for a spell.

While things could be a wee bit repetitive in spots When We Met was a lovely romantic escape that kept me smiling and totally had me in a swoon. Getting lost in the land of happy endings was just a delightful way to spend an evening as two lost souls found friendship, romance and their happily ever after.

In When We Met, readers once again get to witness Susan Mallery work her magic on another implausible couple. Angel Whittaker and Taryn Crawford are opposites in every way. It was crazy fun watching these two weave a path toward their HEA. Strong characters, sarcastic dialogue, flawless writing, and a clever seduction plan takes Fool’s Gold in a new direction.

I felt the story had a small blemish. Taryn Crawford’s character is incredible. While I understand her wardrobe was a critical component – I felt it was emphasized too frequently.

When We Met

PR Executive Taryn Crawford has relocated to Fool's Gold with her business partners, former NFL players, and is trying her best to fit into the quirky town. When former special ops soldier Angel Whittaker, challenges her to a game of seduction, Taryn is more than willing as long as there are no hearts involved. Soon the emotionally and physically scarred Angel is getting under her skin, and the rules of the game have changed ... or have they?

Angel and Taryn's romance is sweet and sexy, but it is actually Taryn's interactions with her "boys" and Angel's heartwarming scenes with his delightful Acorns that steal the show - you will have to read these to see what I mean 😉

Angel and Taryn are likable both as individuals and as a couple. Their backstories are well-developed and Mallery makes it easy to sympathize with the traumas in both of their pasts. That said, this also hampers the romance as it is clear that Angel is still in love with his dead wife and while his attraction to and feelings for Taryn are evident, they do not rise to the level of his connection to his first love.

One element of the story that does not really appeal is the constant descriptions of designer label clothes and shoes. This is, however, my own personal issue as I'm not interested in clothes or accessories whether designer or not. Other readers will probably not have this problem.

Overall, this is a charming read and I look forward to reading about Taryn's partners and their pairings, which are hinted at in this book. Sam and Delina, in particular, should be very entertaining.

Book 13 is about former special ops soldier and now bodyguard-school employee Angel and about one of the 4 partners of the town's new Sports-Agency - SCORE: Taryn.

They start their courtship right on the first page! ☺
Angel approaches Taryn in the café and basically tells her that they're 'inevitable' - they will be having a fling. They have been noticing each other across town since they both arrived last year.
They both don't have time for anything serious. Well, they don't have the time and they both had sad pasts that prevent them from risking anything more than a short affair.

And that's how it starts - they go on a date - Taryn receives a very romantic invitation for said date ;)
They really click - Angel senses that the icy business woman is looking for someone a bit more dominant in the bedroom and he's the guy to give it to her.

Next to Angel and Taryn's budding romance, there's their work. Taryn is very busy with her frustrating partners: former football pros Simon, Kenny and her ex-husband Jack and Jack's 'slightly weird' assistant Larissa.

Angel is trying to give back to the community by signing up for whatever Mayor Marsha has to offer - and she sends him to be the team-leader for a group of kids.☺☺☺ With very funny and moving and interesting and dangerous consequences.

Taryn with her sad childhood and Angel losing his family made them both afraid to ever give their heart again - to trust someone again.
But is it maybe time to finally try?

WILL THE TWO OF THEM GET THEIR HEA???

NOPE.....I'm not telling you ☺

Another really fun trip to Fool's Gold. This time we see Angel and Taryn, both of whom are fairly new to town. Angel and his friends have set up at bodyguard school in Fool's Gold and Taryn and her friends own a PR firm. Neither one is looking for anything permanent, but the chemistry between them has them willing to explore a little.

I loved both these characters. I've been waiting for Angel's story for awhile. I really loved getting more of his back story. Angel grew up in a small coal mining town which he left to join the military. He married young, but his wife and son died while he was deployed and he continues to feel guilty because he wasn't there to protect them. That constant pain keeps him from opening his heart to anyone else. But he does have a strong attraction to Taryn and after watching her for awhile makes his plans to seduce her. I loved the way he seemed to know her so well and what he had to do to get her attention.

Taryn is a city girl, born and bred. It wasn't her choice to move the firm to Fool's Gold and adjusting to small town life hasn't been easy. Having total strangers talking to her and knowing her business kind of freaks her out. Her father had been abusive and she learned the value of blending in early in life. She worked hard to change her life and hasn't shared her childhood with anyone. I loved her strength of character as she overcame that past to become the success she is. I really enjoyed her relationship with her three football player partners. She is great at standing up to them and dealing with their attitudes, but they are also great friends. She has noticed Angel also, and is attracted, but she does have trust issues. His methods of seduction are unique and appeal to her sense of adventure.

The connection that Taryn and Angel feel immediately is surprising to both of them. Neither one opens up about their pasts to other people, but they find it very easy to share with each other. The chemistry between them is hot, but there is also a deep friendship that develops. I loved how that friendship has them coming together in unexpected ways. Taryn is very much a city girl, a fashionista to the bone (loved the descriptions of her clothes). When work requires her to go on a camping trip, it's Angel she goes to for help in learning how to handle the great outdoors. In return, she offers to help him with his greatest challenge yet.

Angel has decided it's time to give back to his new community and Mayor Marsha gets him involved with a local youth group. He went into it expecting to deal with teen boys and was horrified to find out he was going to be a "Grove Leader" to eight seven year old girls. I loved seeing his panic as he read through the handbook to see what he was going to have to do. His relief when Taryn offered to help was obvious. The two of them made an incredible team. I loved seeing Angel's softer side come out as he dealt with all those little girls.

I loved seeing the changes that both of them went through. Taryn adjusts to the small town life and makes friends like she's never had before. Instead of holding herself apart, she starts to get involved with the people around her. I loved seeing her try to figure out how to help Bailey, and the way it showed her a new part of herself. Angel was a bit of a tough nut to crack when it came to opening himself up to love. He was still so messed up from the loss of his family that he was afraid to risk his heart again. There were scenes where he was remembering his family that were just heartbreaking and you could see why he was so cautious. The little girls had a huge part in breaking down the walls around his heart and showing him that he could love again. Taryn's complete understanding of his feelings was important to his ability to take a chance again.

Of course, in a Fool's Gold book there's always that spot where the guy freaks out and runs away from his destiny. When Taryn admits to herself that she loves Angel, and after the scare with the flood tells him so, he can't handle it. Usually we see the ladies all come together in support of the woman, with a night of booze and junk food. But Taryn is different and there is quite a fun twist on the night of support. I loved the parade with Angel and the girls and him finally seeing what was important. He did a nice bit of grovelling and I loved the help he got from the girls.

I do love this series but this book is not going to be one of my favorites. First, I just could not relate with Taryn. Yes, she had a hard childhood and she ran away at a young age and was able to "make something of herself". So what does she do with the money she now makes where she didn't have before? Clothes and shoes. She spends upwards of a thousand dollars for an outfit? She thinks since she didn't have money before that she should show how well she is doing by wearing expensive clothes and shoes, high heels and the higher the better, and carry expensive purses. She has to drive her car two blocks down the road because she doesn't want to wear different shoes!?! To me, imho, she is shallow.

Second is Angel. Now I like Angel a bit better. He seems like a really nice, sweet guy, helps the little Acorns and saves the day, of course. The author wants us to see him as the intimidating, strong, silent guy, with a scar around his neck (you don't want to know how the other guy ended up...well we really don't know, even if we wanted, because the author never tells us). I don't usually put much into the cover when I picture the main characters but these two on the cover don't match the two people inside the book.

I do love how the outsiders react to how perfect Fools Gold is when they move into town. Most newcomers can't get over how perfect the place is but it grows on them.

One instance in the book really bothered me. Towards the end of the book Taryn is talking with a single mom whose daughter wants her to marry so she will have a daddy again. Aw, that's sweet, I love little Chloe. Now the part that bothers me. The mom said:

"...I'm not ready to date. And I'd have to lose thirty pounds. I think I'd rather eat cookies."

Now I can get behind the eating cookies part but you can't go on a date until you lose thirty pounds? Are you serious? I wouldn't be able to live in Fools Gold because everyone is either a size 4, like Taryn, or fit and athletic like Consuelo. Unless you are pregnant or just gave birth, then you are, in the real world, real sized.

I will continue to read this series because, like I said before, I love this series and the people in it. Well, most of the people.

This book drained me for some reason, yet I enjoyed the overall story. I loved the opening when Angel and Taryn begin their game. They’ve watched each other and now they are making their move.

***Details***
I’m not completely sure how well I liked Taryn. I didn’t care much for her fashion sense, but I loved the way she was with her ‘guys’. I really wish more would have been fleshed out about her past. Perhaps see her get involved in helping young girls who may be in a similar situation to what she went through.

As for Angel, he was a great guy to have your back. I enjoyed that he still loved the family that he lost, but I feel his military past wasn’t fleshed out either. His mysterious neck scar is still a mystery. I think we got a better look at him during the previous three books in a way that in his own.

The main focus in WHEN WE MET was the FWM, future warriors of the máa-zib club for girls. Wanting to give back to the community, the mayor suggests Angel take part in mentoring the youngest group, called acorns. He didn’t realize that the acorns were eight, 7 year-old girls.

Luckily for him, Taryn is facing a camping trip with a potential client and the two make a deal to help the other out.

I really liked the acorn girls and I liked how it brought Angel and Taryn together. The girls liked them together and they brought out healing aspects to each other.

Taryn never thought she could love or trust again until she’s put to the test during a flash flood. As for Angel, it takes him a little longer, but he finally comes to peace with his guilt and seeks out Taryn in the FWM parade to win her back.

This is the 13th book in the Fool's Gold series and it featured Angel and Taryn. This book definitely started off with a bang with Angel declaring to Taryn that their relationship would be progressing soon. Taryn is dumbfounded that Angel could be so bold and just flat out tell her they are going to end up in bed together. With their relationship starting so intense, I was amazed at how the two teased eachother and circled around eachother for part of the book. These two might be my favorite couple in the whole series!!

Ever since Angel showed up in the previous trilogy I've been on pins and needles waiting for his book because I just KNEW it was going to be great. And I was totally right!! Angel is such a bad-ass and had sexuality oozing out of his pores. I love how he was so upfront with Taryn and dealt with all of her high maintenance issues. What made Angel even hotter was how he was with his little troop of girls. So adorable. Taryn was a pretty awesome lady and I loved all her shoe/clothes addictions. The impression I had of Taryn from previous books was a ball buster and too high maintenance to really like, but in actuality she turned out to be a really sweet person who cared about her friends.

As always I am happy to read new books in this series and it still remains one of my favorites. Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin for providing me with a copy of this book to read and review.

4-4.5 estrellas.

I liked the characters but the story was exactly the same as all the others in this series and it's getting boring. How is it that Susan Mallery creates these fantastic 5-star characters but follows the same stupid script every time? It's tragic.

For me visiting Fool's Gold is is just fun reading with no expectations except for a few laughs, a few sighs and then a small cheer at the HEA. I would seriously move to this small town just so I could join Eddie and Gladys to watch all of the alpha males that have moved into town.

It never ceases to amaze me that we are now 13 deep into the Fool's Gold series and I'm still devouring every book. Over the last half of this series Ms. Mallery has been expanding this quaint small town, while keeping intact its charm and endearing qualities. Let me just say, I have thoroughly enjoyed the fresh meat that has come along with the growth of this town. Football players, yes please! Back on track, When We Met follows in line with the free spirited nature of the previous books. The hero and heroine, Angel and Taryn, have very unique communications skills. I found them both to be quippy, and easily incite laughter throughout the pages. The two of them had a very comfortable relationship, that you can tell stems from basic friendliness. Even if they weren't romantically involved I could still see them hanging out and confiding in one another. Their relationship was one of those that came out of left field and left them both a little stunned.

This book jumps right into the deep end with Taryn and Angel. When we see them for the first time Angel is warning her, that under no uncertain terms their chemistry and relationship is going to come to a crossroads soon. They both intrigue each other, almost to a fault. They also drive each other crazy. I feel that their personalities may be different, which is why they get along so well. However, they both have suffered in the past. That connects them on an even deeper level. For their own reasons they try to keep people at arms length, and it takes a little twist of fate and the smothering love of this small town to knock down their walls. I will say one thing, this book made it clear that their is a difference between scarred and broken. These two may have scars that run deep but, they are clearly not broken and refuse to be. They try to make the best of the life they are living but, I think it took their connection to really make it all click.

When an author can pull together hilarity, a little bit of steam and tragedy and make it into a captivating story, you know you've got a winner. I've just fallen completely in love with this town and Ms. Mallery's ability to have my heart aching for a character one minute then laughing out loud the next. She is surely one of my go-to authors for a light-hearted, entertaining read. When We Met was a blissful break from my angsty, emotional books. I can't wait to see who gets a hold of those aforementioned football players in the upcoming books!

Happy Reading!

**4 shinning stars**

description

They were a couple of broken souls.
A man who had loved and lost and a woman who didn't believe in romantic love at all.

Angel and Taryn have noticed each other since they moved to Fool's Gold...so when Angel approaches Taryn at the coffee shop and says they're inevitable she (and we) believe him!
And so the wooing and courtship begins, Angel is a patient man (i think he is more like a tease) and he knows exactly what he wants and he is willing to wait for it. And Taryn? Used to flings and the one more assertive, is quite attracted to Angel, who knows what he wants but at the same time, truly respect her and her independent ways.
And so the seduction begins, both agreeing that it would be just a fun time together, nothing too serious down the road..they both have scars that won't let them see a future with love for themselves.

But what happens when they realize, that the path they never thought to cross, is right in front of them?

***
Gosh, I had so much fun reading this! It starts with a bang, their banter in the coffee shop, that left me grinning like fool.
First of all I think I need to move too Fool's Gold, Cupid is getting way to busy there...and let's just say that the men over there are damn FINE!!

About the characters?
I LOVED Taryn and Angel...as individual and as a couple (oh glorious sexual tension)!
One of the things that I love in this series (besides each book can totally be read as a standalone) is that the romance isn't rushed, they get to know each other and of course truly liked each other.
The dark and dangerous Angel with a heart of gold, braiding little girls hair?
It's like kriptonite you guys! Now you're wondering how in the hell a scene like that happens? Haha, I'm so not telling!

Then we have strong, independent, sassy and fashionista Taryn, a perfect and so not obvious match for Angel.
She was so understanding of Angels "scars" and so when she opened up about her own vulnerabilities and fears, it was so emotional.

Anyway, I won't say much more, just that it's a great read!
If you're looking for romance, give this book a try.

Okay, it's official this series has gone way past its prime. It's stagnant, hackneyed and there's nothing new about this book. Every book the lead characters have the same dimensions, they are all the same with different name and past. They all act the same. The romance is dead, there's no "emotions", it feels like two cardboard cutouts interacting with each other. Taryn and Angel have no chemistry whatsoever, and the whole "Girls says I love you, men turns around and shoots out the door" idea needs to get sacked. Not to mention these women get together and then talk about how they think the guy is an idiot for doing it. And worse, this happens in every book in this series. Basically the female lead says "I love you", and the man being a man walks out the door. It feels like Susan Mallory has this urge to make men inherently different from women in this book. Such a radical thinking.

I would not recommend this dull hackneyed mess to anyone. The 2 stars I gave is only for Susan's usage of English. It's far better than most contemporary Indie Romance authors I've read because she can actually write English without making a grammatical error.

It's that time of year again! Fools Gold, California time! This year we start the summer trilogy with a romance between Angel--the deadly ex sniper with the tragic loss of a wife and son in his past, and Taryn, the fashionista who runs Fools Gold's newest business, a PR firm named Score. Like other tales from California's formerly female dominated town, the story of Taryn and Angel's HEA is filled with glimpses of the other pairs who will hook up in the other two books in this summer's trilogy. Along with Mayor Marsha and the other quirky characters who live there. This won't go down as one of my favorites in the series, but I enjoyed the visit and it left me ready to dive into the next story. Not unlike an episode of a favorite television show, which for this reader is pretty darn entertaining.

2 Estrellas!

When you visit Fool's Gold, you never know who you are going to meet and fall in love with.. After all Fool's Gold is the place where happy ending are made.

For Taryn and Angel, they are not looking for love, but it finds them in a sizzling love affair, and 8 little girls who make find a hero in the leader of the pack... It was endearing part of the story for me and I found that Angel became just more that just a guy who lives in Fool's Gold, but a man to have respect and hero-worship of those little girls and especially Taryn who finds it hard to trust anyone, let alone a man.

This was one of my top five fav Fool's Gold books.. Oh heck who I am I kidding, I love them all.

It was ok. Another author creating another heroine who she thinks is cute, but is actually just a bitch and the guy is just supposed to fall all over her feet because of it, when in reality, she would never have gotten anywhere with him because she was, as previously mentioned, a bitch.

This was another entertaining Fool's Gold romance. Taryn Crawford is still adjusting to life in Fool's Gold after her former football player partners vote to move the business from LA. She's high fashion and high heels and isn't sure she likes all the friendliness.

Angel Whittaker is a partner in the bodyguard school after a career in Special Forces. He's dealing with the deaths of his wife and son in a car accident. He feels guilty that he wasn't there to protect him.

Angel and Taryn are attracted to each other, but neither is looking for a committed relationship. An affair suits them since neither is willing to risk their heart.

I enjoyed this story. I liked that Angel got roped into being a troop leader for seven-year-old girls and that Taryn helped him with that. I liked that Taryn had a great group of female friends.

This was an excellent addition to this long-running series.

#13 in the Fool's Gold romance series

This is the best Fool's Gold book I've listened to in a long time. Very often I'm annoyed by the nosiness of the town and the intrusion into the characters' personal lives, but this time there was none of that. This time we get to know Angel, one of the trainers at the bodyguard camp. He's tough and strong, and when he talks to Mayor Marcia about volunteering for a town project, he's asked to become a "grove leader" for a group of 7-year-old girls. This horrifies him since he thinks he'll scare them and not be able to relate to them. So he asks Taryn for help. She works with "the boys" at the local marketing group, and she and Angel are finding that they have a lot of chemistry between them. I liked that they are both very strong, independent people, confident in their own bodies and their own styles. But they also have vulnerable sides that very few people are privy to, and this makes them perfect for each other. I loved how they worked together with the girls, with a very exciting life-saving scene that kept me on the edge of my seat. The reason for some awkwardness between them makes sense. The subject was mentioned once or twice, but it wasn't overly done. The story was interesting, the relationship was pleasant to watch as it developed, and the secondary characters of "the boys" (the former football players that Taryn works with) and the little girls were very enjoyable. Tanya Eby is the voice of Fool's Gold to me after all this time, and she did another excellent job of narration.
