Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Goku is the Super Saiyan! Finally our team has a chance against Freeza. The guys back on Earth manage to get all their Dragon Balls together and figure out the perfect wish that'll help save everyone still alive on Namek as Freeza's desperate attacks to beat Goku threaten to destroy the whole planet.

Really cool to see Goku reach peak form. I enjoy his character as he chooses to stand and fight against Freeza - to test himself against the most powerful person in the Universe.

The first appearance of the Super Saiyan, and the epic climax of the battle with Freeza - my personal favorite villain.

I almost wish DBZ would have ended here, more on those thoughts in the next review...

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww yeah!

THE SUPER SAIYAN IS HERE!!

Looking back at the scale of the fights in the first Dragon Ball series, like the Strongest Under the Heavens Tournaments, look insignificant compared to the massive canvas Akira Toriyama’s working with here. Once upon a time a boy and an old man fought one another on a raised concrete platform in front of spectators. Now, two gods are hitting each other so damn hard, they are literally punching holes into a planet!!

At the end of the last book, Son Goku tried an all-or-nothing Kamehameha (fireball for the uninitiated or hadoken if you’re a gamer) against Freeza – but the evil summabitch survived it. Now Goku’s chi is all but depleted and Freeza looks barely fazed. And then Freeza goes too far and kills someone near and dear to Goku. That’s the last straw. Goku goes nuts, his power levels surge, and then PWSSH! Enter: the SUPER SAIYAN!

Just like that, I understood why Toriyama had introduced Goku a couple books ago only to take him away again, damaged, to recover. The more you hit the Hulk, the angrier he gets, and the more invincible he becomes; the Saiyans have a similar attribute – the more you beat them, and they survive, the more powerful they become once they return back to health. Goku’s gone through so many beatings - even death! – and done so much training, that’s he’s punched through multiple levels of power to a whole new one only he occupies: the level of Super Saiyan.

If you’re gonna hit the king, you better kill the king!

Not that once Goku goes Super Saiyan, Freeza becomes a pushover. Freeza himself pushes up to 100% full power and the two have a gloriously over-the-top fight even by Toriyama’s standards! Huge chunks of Namek are literally destroyed, giant holes in the sea appear, and the whole planet becomes a ticking timebomb, with only minutes left before it explodes and takes everyone with it – except Freeza, who can survive the vacuum of space!

Uh… and then.

The pacing of the story becomes uneven once Toriyama tries juggling the other storyline. He can handle the Goku/Freeza fight perfectly, but he also tries to balance out this overly-complex plan involving the Dragon Balls and things get shaky.

So: now there are Dragon Balls on Earth, they can wish to bring back everyone Freeza killed on Namek, which includes the Great Elder, which means the Dragon God returns with the one wish left, meaning they can use that wish to save everyone on Namek and take them to Earth before it explodes! But there are limits: Shenlong can only bring back Freeza’s victims going back a year (for some reason) rather than the millions (billions?) he’s killed during his lifetime.

It’s clunky trying to explain it here, and it’s even clunkier to read in the midst of the exciting final battle! The flow of the book goes from blindingly fast to shudderingly slow! That said, once all of the exposition is dealt with and you know what’s happening, it adds to the excitement of the story to make it – impossibly - even more tense.

You guys, volume 11’s an amazing book but it still hasn’t wrapped up the Freeza arc! While I loved it, I really wished Toriyama had completed this here – that final page is no way to end a book (unless you have the next one directly to hand)!

The Dragon Ball saga is like the world’s best roller-coaster. It takes you up for a massive rush down, then takes you up again, higher, for an even more exciting drop, then takes you up again still higher, etc. Volume 11 is the most exciting book in the 27 books I’ve read so far, yes, even with the awkward, making-it-up-as-he-goes info-dumps amidst the action. Goku the Super Saiyan makes his first appearance in this super book!

There's a lot that's been said of Goku's transformation into Super Saiyan - the final culmination of an epic battle, the vengeance and anger, the righteous beatdown. It's the highest climax the story ever goes to. I don't need to repeat that here. But what I haven't heard so far about is the buildup - and the masterful double-bluff Toriyama pulled with this thing.

It's hard to believe nowadays, but there was a time, almost thirty years ago, when we had absolutely no idea what this "Super Saiyan" even was. Frieza and Guru name-dropped it, but it was Vegeta that really made a big deal about it. He boasted himself as having realized the legend all the time, and the same of Goku a couple times as well. He just wouldn't shut up about it.

And maybe he was right? How were we to know better? Maybe this thing, Super Saiyan, was just a Saiyan that was really super strong? They certainly seemed to be at this point. We didn't know better.

Enter Frieza. Enter the galactic tyrant, the monster beyond monsters. Watch as he beats the tar out of Vegeta - the supposed Super Saiyan brought low onto the dirt like he didn't matter at all.

So what does that make of the whole thing? Either the whole legend was a lie... or it was true indeed, and yet Frieza was so much stronger than it anyway. Either way, its purpose in the story seemed clear: just another way to prop up Vegeta's self-importance and ego, get him to boast more about himself, bring him to higher heights so that he might be smacked down and humbled all the harder. Once he died, the concept went with him: it was off-handedly mentioned by Frieza once after, but that's it. And the heroes seem to manage the fight just fine without it, with good teamwork and one final Spirit Bomb, as they did at the end of the last arc.

Yet Frieza proves far tougher than they can handle... and then when all hope seems lost, when they're brought low and cannot get up again - here it is!

There's no doubting it that's a Super Saiyan! Chekhov's Gun pistol-whipping it right in your face! All of Vegeta's yammering suddenly, unexpectedly, comes back with vengeance! The legend is realized and everything makes sense at long last!

The best payoff in the entire story, bar none. You get a couple other good ones, but they all really just build up on this one rollercoaster of a scene. Read it, study it, master it. It's great.

...Kind of looks goofy before you get used to it, though. Way bigger than later.

This was such a great volume and yes its action but when one of the Z-Warriors dies, its sparks something in Goku and it finally happens! Goku goes Super Saiyan and its amazing to see and then their fight is epic and its just bam here, then wham there and so on and so forth, its heart-pulsating action and one while gaining advantage on the other fight and its crazy epic and then the subplot with dragon balls to transfer the Namekians to earth after aliving them is fun and its just a retcon plot but works well as its the final battle between Frieza and Goku and it gets better, Frieza pissed and Kakarot coming for the final blow! The writing, the stakes and the emotions are so better this issue and the art is just a compliment to that! Fantastic stuff by Toriyama!

A nostalgic and epic moment as the first Super Saiyan moment is finally introduced, leading up to an unforgettable battle that is capitalized by a reminder of Son Goku's innocence and pureness of heart.

It would've been nice if the next couple chapters of the following volume were included in this one just to properly conclude the story arc but it is what it is!

This was a fantastic read. This series continues to get better and better. This is an absolute thrilling ride. I really enjoyed the action and battles. In this volume, Goku battles against Freeza. Also, I go to see Goku as a Super Saiyan, which is epic. I really liked how we got to see his evolution through 3 different stages of the Super Saiyan form. This was my favoyrite volume so far because Goku turned Super Saiyan. I can't wait for Volume 12. Overall, an amazing read.

As you may have noticed, I've rated everything 5 stars so far. IMO, the Freeza/Sajyin sagas are Dragonball at its best. Considering the manga was released weekly, I think it's kind of arbitrary to rate a certain collection of chapters over another.
I dont know what to say that hasnt already been said somewhere else so If you like shonen, just read it already!

I rate this comic 5 stars because i love how it takes a big turn in the series when frieza has the upper hand and after goku seen the death of his friend the setting it takes and when he turns super saiyan is just a masterpiece in my opinion so i recommend this book to anybody that's into action pack cartoons.

And that's it. I made to the iconic moment. It was really cool, I must admit. And particularly the last two chapters were REALLY cool. Goku deciding to stay behind to beat Freeza, and then just giving up because Freeza couldn't fight anymore and he didn't take any pleasure in killing a defenseless warrior. It's all very neat.

Previously on Dragon Ball Z

(I) Vegeta has been killed by Freeza not during battle but because Freeza wanted him to be quiet while he is fighting with Goku.

(II) Goku has finally recovered and now has all his strength to fight an attack Freeza.

(III) The gang are witnessing this battle and are trying to figure out what to do next and whether it is possible for Goku to win this fight.

That is what you missed previously on Dragon Ball Z!

FINALLY WE GET TO WITNESS THE DAMN FU@$%@#KING SUPER SAIYAN!!!!!!

I have waited for so many damn volumes to witness this event and the only disappointment I have is that this manga is in black and white. Because of that issue Goku's hair is completely white and I am fortunate enough to have seen the anime cartoon so it feels as though I am watching the television show. I did not remember what was the trigger that makes him this legendary warrior but then I remember who has to die in order for him to transform.

Freeza is actually scared now that Goku may have a chance at destroying him and raises the stakes. Goku thought by using 90% of his strength at a Kamehameha blast that it would destroy Freeza but no luck. Goku realizes that the only way to destroy Freeza is by using this Chi ball that gathers all the energy of this planet and its very difficult to create and achieve.

The unfortunate part is that it takes a long time to gather up the Chi and while Freeza does not realize what Goku is doing, the gang have to step him and allow him time to achieve this attack. Piccolo fight and the gang but Freeza swaps them as flies and to give revenge back to Goku, Freeza kills Kuririn like it was no big deal.

I remember his death vividly in the anime and I was so affected by it because I loved his character but I was robbed of that feeling thanks to the mangas. This is not the first time that Kuririn has been killed and because of that I am numb and indifference about the experience because death is not as significant as it once was in this series! While all hell is breaking loose on planet Namek, back on planet Earth they are gathering all 7 of the Dragon Balls and trying to figure out what wish to ask to Shelong.

When they finally get all the Dragon Balls, Kaio-Sama tells Kami-Sama to make the wish of resurrecting everyone who was killed by Freeza and his men. By doing so, all the Namekians come back to life meaning the Elder is alive and the final Dragon Ball wish can be granted on Planet Namek since the Elder died before the last wish was granted. Now that the opportunity is available now they are quickly trying to get the wish granted of getting everyone out of the planet Namek and onto Earth except for Goku and Freeza.

The wish is granted and Freeza loses all sanity that his wish was not granted. He arrived at the Dragon to grant his immortality but he did not know that the wish has to be spoken in the language of the Namekians and Dende was able to grant the wish that saved everyone.

Freeza does not want to die by the hands of Goku and decided to explode the planet but Goku got in the way of his plans except while Goku took the majority of the attack, Freeza has open a whole to the core of the planet and now began a self-destruct sequence that will destroy the planet. Now Goku needs to find a way to destroy Freeza and escape the planet on time before he falls to his untimely death.

I really loved this volume for the grand fighting sequences and how it was leaving me at the edge of my seat wondering what is going to happen next and whether Goku survives this whole dilemma. While I see the anime show that showcases what happens next, I do not know if Goku survives or dies and the gang resurrects him again. We won't find out until next time on Dragon Ball Z.

Throughout Dragon Ball there has been a really cool idea where characters find deeper power within themselves when they have accepted the cultures from which they come from. With Piccolo this is shown through his Assimilation with Nail. For Goku this is evident in his major character shift when he enters his first ever transformation as the prophesied Super Saiyan.

This is just another insane addition to the Freeza Saga, and the longer it goes the more it cements itself as one of the most memorable arcs I have consumed of any media. This is the second volume of the climax of this story and I suspect that the next volume will give us the conclusion and honestly I’m going to miss it and I wonder if the next story will be able to keep this momentum.

Once again, the highlight of this volume to me is the teamwork present in the first half with the inclusion of Gohan, Krillin, and of course my glorious prince. To me what these characters have given us throughout this whole arc feels very much the core of Dragon Ball. When all hope is lost, make sure you are not alone. Teamwork beats despair.

One of my favourite panels are of Krillin and Gohan using the little chi they have left to divert Freezas attention momentarily from afar, even if the blast itself may be ineffective on the surface. Give it your all and persevere.

But of course, the obvious focus point of this book is the arrival of the Super Saiyan awakening in Goku !! Fuelled by pure rage, he is able to transform and in the instant his appearance changes, so does his personality. He becomes prideful and cold, traits that we have been shown common in the Saiyan race.

But is this transformation enough to defeat the monster that is Freeza? I guess we will find out volume 12. But until then, the dragon balls have been used and the Namek race have been revived and brought to Earth as well as the other hero’s who died by Freeza’s hand.

The planet of Namek however? A massive battleground for two warriors whose power is feared by the GODS!

Fair warning: this 'review' will contain spoilers. Really all my reviews for DBZ have contained some small spoilers. My reviews of these books are just thoughts anyway, and my general assumption, while not one hundred percent accurate I'm sure, is that anyone reading these is already familiar with the anime.

Anyway, it's sort of funny how quickly things move in the manga. One of the biggest complaints I have as an adult going back to watch the anime is how painfully slow everything is, and just how much filler there was. Not that there isn't a good reason that the filler is there, I mean, they didn't want to overtake the manga. Totally understandable (right Game of Thrones?) Regardless there is a lot of filler, that's why series like Kai have been made. The manga is totally opposite. Things happen FAST. I think in the anime there were like 10 episodes between the time Freeza achieves his final form and the time Goku goes Super Saiyan. In the manga there are about 10 pages. And here's the funny part; I sort of miss the build up. Now I'm not saying I need 50 pages of Goku powering up, but the quickness does take away from a certain suspense level that exists in the show. However, it doesn't take away enough to lessen my enjoyment while reading. The events on Namek are a joy to read, and some of the most iconic moments in the Dragon Ball Z story happen there.

Despite myself not interested in Dragon Ball Z I do have a large amount of respect for the franchise.

As I said before in my review of Dragon Ball, this kickstarted the trends for later Shonen manga and that's something to admire about the entire Dragon Ball series. Shonen manga series have taken elements from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot. I feel like I was a bit too old when I was first introduced to the starters of Shounen and Shojo. Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon were introduced to me a bit too late after I had started reading & watching series like InuYasha, Ouran High School Host Club, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Code Geass.

Again, I still think it's an admirable franchise despite my personal feelings towards it. (I don't hate it but I didn't love it either) It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. There are many things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.

While I don't love Dragon Ball Z, it has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.

The cover is a spoiler! But yes, it's finally happened. Goku ascends to the level of Super Saiyan. When Freeza decides to finally take Goku as a serious threat he laser beams Piccolo in the chest and then blows Kuririn up. The rage at watching his innocent friend (and more than that, a good man) get blown up, Goku's chi explodes and his hair glows and he's a super saiyan! With his increased abilities though he's not enough to take Freeza out...although that may be because he has a good heart. Freeza decides to blow up Namek in a final act of desperation. The Lord of World's is communicating with Kami and works it so they can wish back all the Nameks with Earth's dragon balls and then use the Namekian balls last wish to move them to Earth and be safe. Goku tries an act of mercy on Freeza but the cliffhanger is Freeza throws a destructo-disc that Goku promises won't end him.

While this was certainly an exciting volume, seeing the latest power-up for Goku, it was frustrating that it was the same struggles he was having. There was no stakes cause Freeza was *still* too powerful. When is it going to end? :p

There are few things in anime/manga history as iconic as this grueling battle. The super saiyan transformation is what everyone focuses on, but I think it’s the moments before that really deserve attention.

At the end of his rope, Goku pulls out the Genki-Dama, the attack that relies on the life and generosity of those near him to become fatal. As it builds and builds, Piccolo, Gohan and Kuririn give the last of their energy to buying time. In the end it was pointless, but their sacrifice is what makes the transformation so powerful. Freeza’s resurgence and Kuririn’s death is really something else. While the super saiyan is kind of a deus-ex-machina, it’s so exciting because it reveals a part of Goku we have never seen before. A brutal and cocky monster.

While I wish that Toriyama would’ve committed to this personality change that comes with the transformation, we wouldn’t have the classic panel of Goku’s regret for killing Freeza. That really is the crux of his character. Needlessly and idiotically generous.

All stars!!!

WAAAH!!!
I mean, that ending! I cannot get over that ending! (shakes fist in the vague direction of Toriyama)
But.
This was awesome. I loved every part of it. The art is amazing (admittedly, with Goku's colorless hair a much greater focus is needed to discern what's happening in the panels, but it's worth it!) and it really comes to life in the gripping, fabulously detailed panels depicting the one enormous fight that fills this volume from the first page to the last. The plot is deliciously twisted and broad, with so many things happening at once in many different locations - I love how Toriyama managed to bring together all main characters of the series in this arc, and how he compellingly braided the disparate strands into a cohesive whole.

(...I couldn't get over that cliffhanger. I had to peek into the next volume to see how it ends!)
