A quiet life. A break from the dangers of being a cop. Yep, Lex Tompkins has his future all worked out. That is, until fate—or rather the stray toddler from the house across the street—bites those plans in the ass. Well, technically Lex’s neck. Suddenly, he’s transformed into the Alpha of the secret werewolf clan hiding in the perfect, out of the way neighborhood of Lex’s dreams.
Now Lex is the unlikely leader of a dysfunctional pack… except for Spencer Robinson, the one shifter Lex can’t seem to keep his paws off. Will Spencer be able to teach Lex how to embrace who he has truly become?
Add two parts sass and one part sweet and you have Poppy Dennison to T—sweet tea that is. Raised by a gaggle of Southern women who love reading and have backbones of steel, Poppy was brought up to see the best in people but always speak her mind. Mix it all together, like Grandma’s famous cobbler, and you get a sassy, Southern lady with a quick wit and loads of charm, who will soften any blow with “Bless your heart.” Her books reflect her small town roots, are filled with all the comforts of home, and come with side dish of spicy, because that’s the way she likes it.
I couldn't get behind this one. I skimmed and almost DNF. The entire situation (how Lex became Alpha) was ridiculous; the dialogue, wooden; the characters, shallow. Also, ZERO relationship development, no world building whatsoever, and some dumb plot about rogue shifters. All of this has been done before, and done better. I think I'm done with this author.
On one hand, I appreciated that this story not focusing on finding a mate – which can easily turn into insta-love when it comes to shifters stories. Instead, this was more about building up a pack when Lex was turned accidentally into an Alpha of a pack whose previous Alpha died (by the way, this also had the cutest way of a man turned into an Alpha, ever! *grin*). Lex had to deal with pack members who like to cuddle and sleep together (really sleep, okay, literally sleep together), one pack member that was being ignored by the rest, other pack members sniffing around the territory, and such.
Unfortunately, in the romance department, I found it lacking and dry. Spencer, the love interest, got it right when he told Lex that he didn’t know how to deal with Lex suddenly all over him when for months Lex didn’t even notice Spencer.
For me, this could be remedied if there was a way of wooing, so I could feel that Lex had a change of heart. Alas, I didn’t feel like it was there in the story. I didn’t feel the interest being a two-way street and I didn’t believe the romance between Lex and Spencer.
So it did provide something different but I just found the romance as slightly disappointing.
The book is provided by the publisher in exchange for honest review
Cute start to a new series ( even if it didn't end on a cliffy it did leave me wanting more and wanting it now, some day in the future I will learn to NOT start these books until all of them are out...) Lex, grumpy and annoyed at his life, he's an ex cop and he's an ex because of an injury. He moved out to the boonies but his neighbor has more people over than he would like. It interrupts his grumpiness. So when a little bitty baby bites him, his life changes. He stays grumpy for a while but not for long. It's a cute twist on the usual shifter lore and I liked it a lot, there are tons of things I want to know..Spencer's history, Nathan's history, I'm guessing Ruby might have a story to tell..and was Taylor's car accident really an accident..and when is the biting going to commence? Will Mia see more in Justin and will anyone in the damn pack learn to knock? Tune in next time to see how the fur flies!
A cute, sweet shifter story. I liked how being Alpha meant more than just being a controlling dick, and more about taking care of his pack. I liked the feelings between the pack, and not just between the mates. It made for a richer story for me.
I adored this story! It's a quick read but I found Lex absolutely sexy and Spencer so adorable. It was easy for me to get hooked on the book and being a shifter lover I liked how Ms. Dennison gave the typical wolf shifters a slight twist in how the Alpha of the pack is chosen.
Lex is this grumpy ex-cop that just wants to be left alone. He's so annoyed at his neighbor Spencer because he thinks Spencer is always having these parties that disturb Lex's quiet life. In reality, Spencer is a werewolf and that's his pack visiting him. Lex learns all this when he's bitten and forced into the role of the pack's Alpha. I found Lex's reaction to becoming Alpha hilarious but also liked how he came to terms with it all and his actions while getting accustomed to having claws and sharp teeth. I thought of Spencer as the motherhen of the pack. Everyone relies on him and adores him but he'll always be there for everyone. It's really cute and means he fits perfectly with Lex now! :D
I liked that this book showed the struggle of Lex trying to refrain from claiming Spencer as his mate (even though he didn't realize what was happening at first). If anything, I wished this book had been longer so we could have gotten more of these boys, learned more about them and how things work out from here but I loved it too much to not mind all that much that this is a brief glimpse into their bonding. Mostly, though, this book is about Lex taking up as Alpha and mending the broken connections that cause some of the pack to feel like outsiders. It was nice to see that play out and how much Lex helped in making the pack better and overall a whole 'family'.
I can't wait to see where this series goes from here and to get deeper into the world that's been created. Plus, all the characters were so fascinating and lovable to me and I really hope we get Nathan's story soon because I feel really bad for him and he deserves some happiness!
For a shifter fan like myself, Poppy Dennison's books are a gift. I love that I can rely on them to deliver a fun, feel-good read, without the genre's usual depressing rehash of stock characters and plotlines. I wouldn't call this an ambitious book, but it features likable characters and small but telling innovations on the familiar tropes. Most notable here is the emphasis on forming a "pack," and the Alpha's role in cementing the bonds between the members. A lot more page time is spent on those relationships than the usual "claiming" insta-lust stuff. Even the sleeping arrangements clue us in: we see Lex spend several nights curled up with the entire pack before he ever gets it on with his mate. It's a nice, original touch that shows the care Dennison puts into telling her good-natured tales.
Definitely recommended for those who want a fresh, feel-good shifter tale.
How is it that I have not read this author before? Poppy Dennison wrote a sweet and clever little story about a reclusive, ex-police officer, Lex, who was wounded in the line of duty and who moves to the country to get away from everything an everyone. Sure, he notices his only neighbor, Spencer. But Spencer is small and thin and really just not what Lex usually goes for--ever. Plus the guy is always having parties! Poor Lex--all he wants to do is be alone! Have privacy! Well, not really, but he has convinced himself of that and is determined to stick to it! Then, a small child wanders into his yard and as Lex begrudgingly does the "right thing" by carrying the child back to Spencer's home, little Aiden bites his "Pa" and Lex's life changes forever!
There were times in this story that I laughed out loud--it was so funny and yet so sweet, As Lex begins to take care of the others he's inadvertently entrusted with, you see this gruff, grumpy man become this wonderfully rough yet caring leader. The paranormal aspect was so well done. There was the delightful nuance of "pack" living and then the growing relationship between Spencer and Lex...oh just lovely!
I really enjoyed this story, Accidental Alpha--and now have many Poppy Dennison novels to pick up and read, including what I hope will soon be a sequel to this little gem.
This was just a great short story with such a completely different take on becoming a werewolf and an Alpha of a pack. I really enjoyed all the characters, not just the MCs and really look forward to another book in series to see where the author takes all of them.
This could have been much better. The begining was very rough, and the dialog jarring. It could have used another round of editing. I really liked Dennison's Mind Magic so I know she can write better than this.
Really enjoyed this one! Can't wait until the next book (which is really why I should wait until more of the series is out before I rush off and read something!) Anyone know when the next book is due out?
A really interesting take on werewolves pack. The human-form members behave like a pack: they crave the alpha's presence and they like to sleep (really sleep, not 'sleep') together.
Best thing about this book? Aiden, the baby biter. And while I love cute kids in my stories, if the little tyke is the BEST thing about the book ... Houston, we have a problem.
This one had promise but it fell victim to the tell-not-show syndrome which placed it firmly in yawn-city for me. I think part of the problem was its length (<100 pages). But also, I felt like I was dropped into the middle of the story. Funny thing is, I wasn't. But I felt that way because the story just took off. There was no world building, apart from Spencer and company were Lex's noisy neighbors ... bah, hum bug. Lex's transformation was unexpected, yet there was no upset about it. There was no "What the fuck do you mean I'm a werewolf?!? Werewolves aren't real!!!" Lex took to his wolfiness and alpha status like a duck to water. No questions. There was no angst or turmoil about the impact to his human life or his family. Wait ... does Lex even have a family?!? See, this is what I mean.
One of the reasons I enjoy shifter werewolf stories is the pack dynamic. Well, not here! Pack dynamic, aside from the doggie pile (weird), was nil. I felt like I was playing my own game of twenty-questions and I got maybe three answers. Otherwise ... *crickets*.
Lastly, sexy, smexy fun. I love it. It's part of the reason I read m/m. By the time I got to 90%, I was prepared to categorize this book as sex-off-page. But then came the sex scene. It was underwhelming. Mostly because it felt like an after-thought. Like, alright, here's your sexy, smexy. It was about as enjoyable as a pity fuck. Not fun.
Bottom line: I really liked Poppy Dennison's Triad series so I had high hopes for this one. Sadly, it didn't compare. Since this is only book one, however, I'll give it two bites at the proverbial apple before tossing in the towel.
This was a single pov short story but I gotta say that I did not feel the love in this one.
So we have Lex, a bad tempered cop who hated everyone. Including the cute non bear of a guy, Spencer, who lived across from him. In fact the first few pages were just about not liking him.
Then one day Lex gets bit by a kid and then instant Alpha status. As soon as he turns, he is suddenly attracted to Spencer. Because now he can smell that Spencer is his mate.
Along the way, he discovers that he is a good pack alpha and brings his group together. I actually really loved the pack building. That was lovely.
I did not buy the thing between Lex and Spencer. So Lex literally went from treating this guy horribly to telling him he smelled good. I mean Spencer did put up a token resistance but since he knew they were mates and accepted the whole being treated this way, he caved.
You get it, right? Right from the blurb you know, you just know it’s going to be hilarious. You have that expectation, and mostly you hope to whatever deity, that it will be a good read and not disappoint you. Fear not, all that hope and expectations are met head on and then some.
For crying out loud, this author has a very nice sense of humor, turning the most ludicrous, awkward, and overwhelming moments of a man losing his sanity into hilarious scenes for the reader.
Just imagine for a moment being a person that craves solitude and peace. You buy a house in the middle of freaking nowhere, assured by that idiot real estate agent that there is only one neighbor in near vicinity, but peace and solitude are never there. Why? Because that only neighbor of yours apparently has a huge freaking family. Yeah! Oh, oh, and imagine one of those family members running loose and dropping on your porch, but you can’t yell at him or scare him off because he’s a toddler, and wait it gets better, you actually have to get the kid back into a house full with people…
I don’t know, I can’t really show you how freaking hilarious I found this. I can’t possibly make you understand how much my belly hurt from laughing when said toddler bit Lex’s neck hard enough that he passed out. And the rest, oh man, it was just awesome.
But all the above only complement the humor of the text. The story itself was pretty great too, and I’m very picky when it comes to werewolves and packs dynamic. Let’s see; originality-check. Who has ever read of an accidental Alpha. This Alpha is not born into a pack, he’s chosen from a toddler Alpha, and he was human so he’s completely new to this. Not only he has changed into a werewolf, but he’s the damned Alpha, he has a duty to protect and provide for these… strangers!
His incredulity besides being utterly hilarious (can’t say that enough) was well written. The character, Lex was so, so perfect in his confusion and his antics. The way he grows into this new life, new responsibilities, and having a big “family” was a joy to read. The way he didn’t bat an eye when time came to fight and shed some blood, oh man that was awesome too. I loved him. I loved the plot. I loved the rest of the characters. I loved Mia, and Nathan, and Ruby, and Spencer.
I wish it was longer though. I wish there was a bit more time for a bit more development, and some questions answered. I am assuming that those questions will slowly answer themselves as the series continue, and I’m seriously hoping that we’ll see more of Lex and Spencer in those future installments.
As it is, if you’re a fan of paranormal/wereshifter stories I strongly recommend this one to you, it’s original in its theme, it’s fun and funny, and it’s really hot there when our guys get together. Just read it, you’ll love it too. J
I liked this one a lot! Narrated solely from the new Alpha's POV, this story offers a novel take on the ABO world. The reader only get to know the Omega from the MC's views of him.
It's an insta-pheromone attraction but at first the Alpha is clueless of how he wants to respond. So the romance builds slowly and we only get a smexy scene at the very end. Not that the book lacked at all from that fact.
The sequel centers on the least appealing character in this book, which is the ONLY reason I did not continue with this series.
First off, the title was the one thing that attracted me to this book - that is ahem.... the guy on the cover attracted me first... grrrr, okay, so the blurb, the title AND the guy got my attention! I admit, I am a sucker for hunky men and even if my friends tell me I have a strange taste in men, well, let me just say this guy is exactly how I picture an alpha male should look like. So there, confession over.
Now, for the book? Well, the title and the blurb tells the tale of how Lex finds himself suddenly a werewolf and the alpha leader of a pack. What the blurb does not clue us in is on how hilarious this book is! I loved, loved, loved how Lex got bitten, grape jelly and all!
Lex does not really know what he got into, his wanting to have a solitary and quiet life turns into being solely responsible for a pack of weres whose culture, traditions, rules and expectations they do not have a manual of. His reaction to Spencer was funny, what when he was totally avoiding the poor man from the beginning and finding he cannot keep thoughts and hands off the poor guy the next. Lex is in too deep and he either has to sink or learn to swim in the were pool fast!
The great thing about this book is that it is a very light read and whatever drama or angst expected in the formula are there indeed but treated mildy too. All we readers have to do is relax and just read the story. Although I found this a tad short, it is really not that short, just a fast paced book with the right ingredients of drama, angst, mating, erotica, and grape jelly.
This is obviously the first book and I am so looking forward to the next installments. My curiosity is truly tickled here and I am impatient on how Nathan plays out later on.
What do you do when your career as an police officer is quite possibly over thanks to a stabbing and now your dream of a quiet life away from everyone is disrupted by a little kid? A lost little kid who rewards you for finding him by biting you? You get even grumpier and assume you are having some sort of psychotic break, of course. To make it all even more sunshine and daisies, now the cute (though you won’t admit noticing that) neighbor smells like your personal version of heaven and you can hear the heartbeats of the crowd of people standing with you, staring at you. Strangers who believe you are their leader. What’s a guy to do NOW?
This is the dilemma of poor Lex, who just wanted to be left alone. Now it’s a mess, he’s frightened away the delicious smelling man (NOT his fault, in my opinion – he went from zero knowledge to hey, welcome to the pack without so much as an introduction - I mean, come on!) It’s so difficult for him because he has no idea what he’s doing! Even things simple for the pack – Alpha eats first – well, how would he know that?
I liked the supporting characters, especially Nathan and Ruby. Poor, sweet, sarcastic things. It’s funny and interesting both to watch Lex try to deal with this great big life-changing event without going crazy. Oddly, Spencer, who I think is supposed to be the more wonderful of the pack, was a little less lovely for me. I liked him well enough but honestly I thought he was so unhelpful for Lex at times. “Let’s talk about this another time, Alpha.” That’s kind of my vibe from him.
This is a great beginning to a new series and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next one. Lex, well let’s just say he can pretend to be grumpy, “Fucking puppy piles,” but really, “Yeah, you look miserable…” Go Lex.
Job skills never die but sometimes, a career can change directions. Former cop Lex Tompkins was trained to protect and serve the city. Now Lex must learn to protect and serve as Alpha to a werewolf pack. On the other hand, Lex’s new job comes with some unexpected perks, like discovering his neighbor Spencer Robinson is a werewolf, as well as Lex’s new love interest.
Accidental Alpha is the first book in the Pack Partners series. The characters are creditable. Lex is a naturally kindhearted person instilled with good judgment, although he had turned into a gloomy hermit because of slow-to-heal injuries incurred during a crime investigation. After Lex was bitten by the least likely suspect, Lex’s life has purpose again. He has formed a connection with every member in the pack and he has the pack’s respect for the reason that Lex rules with impartiality. For months Spencer tried to get Lex to notice him but the attraction did not become mutual until Lex was turned. Now Spencer is undecided by the possibilities of becoming the alpha’s mate.
Poppy Dennison has created a splendid heartwarming romantic comedy that I enjoyed immensely. I look forward to the next series installment.
This opening novel to a series by Dennison is absolutely captivating. I consumed this story in one sitting, not able to put it down. The characters are likeable, believable and just downright sexy. If you are looking for a story with a lot of meat, coupled with some just downright hot, steamy romance, then this is certainly a must read. Yes, I know that paranormal romance is certainly not the cup of tea for many a reader, but this story transcends the paranormal and becomes a story about relationships, family, and belonging. This story shows that isolating oneself is very futile and that we all need a place to belong.
EEK!!! I DEVOURED this novella. Holy sheep! I fell in love with Lex, Spencer, and even Ruby's feisty attitude.
I can not wait til the next book.
I only wish that we got more of Spencer's story. I wanted to know him more. I loved the hierarchy of the pack, as well. Watching them shift on the full moon and connecting with them was great. He didn't even know what he was doing, but it was ingrained in Lex already that he needs to watch them. It was great. I also loved the "puppy piles". What I didn't love? The lack of privacy. There is such a thing called KNOCKING!
If this series goes the way this novella did, it'll most likely be my favorite shifter series! Excellent start :)
4.25 stars - An absolutely delightful, feel-good read. The story is simple and somewhat predictable, but I didn't mind at all. I wanted it to be longer though.
Lex is a grumpy ex-cop living in solitude after he was let go when a stabbing injury left him unfit to return to duty. Then a little boy appeared at his house from next door and bit him, changing his life forever.
Really enjoyed this one. I'm hoping for more to come please! I want to know how this group of characters find their mates and their place in the pack. This story has so much potential to grow into a great series.
