I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.
I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).
So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.
Loved this whimsical vignette that falls just before Heart of Obsidian in a rare at-home scene for Max and Sophia. They're so playful and Morpheus the cat was quite the little scene-stealer. :)
Sophia and Max short from the September 2013 Newsletter.
I adore these two and loved getting a snippet into how they are doing. They are super sweet.
I really hope that we get more of Max's brother River, and even though he wasn't in this it was great to learn what he is up to and I am intrigued by his involvement with the Rats.
Oh and let us not forget the star of this show. The lovely Morpheus was as awesome and full of attitude as ever!!
While I love the psy/changeling series, this pair is my least favourite for some reason so while it was sweet and I liked it, I didn't love this short like the others.
“If he told us, Morpheus would have to kill us. Code of cats.” Cats are evil, officially stated by Nalini Singh, this pleases me :D.
Sunday - you and me. No cell phones, no messages, no world-altering events. If anyone needs either one of us, they can damn well come to the apartment. At which point, we’ll have trouble hearing them. Better yet, I’ll cut the power to the doorbell.
Note from Max to Sophia
Quelle surprise. Another cute and domestic story that is perfect for people wanting to check in with their ship. Personally I liked Sophia and Max well enough, but never really got attached to them as a couple. The one thing that rubbed me the wrong way is this line expressing Sophia’s teleological attitude of “she wouldn’t change a thing about her horrendous past because it had led her to this wonderful man”, which I happen to think is bullshit given all the trauma and abuse Sophia has suffered. For once, I would like for it to be acknowledged how incredibly fucked up the things these characters have gone through are, without this “it makes them worthy” sentiment being attached to it. THEY DON’T NEED TO BE TRAUMATISED TO BE CONSIDERED GOOD OR COMPELLING ENOUGH OKAY THANK YOU GOODBYE.
4,5/5 Too short, there’s never enough Max/Sophia imo. I wish Nalini would’ve included them more throughout the series. This glimpse into their daily lives soothes me a little bit.
A free, 11.9 in the Psy-Changeling paranormal romance series, first appearing in Singh's September 2013 newsletter, and revolving around two major Changeling groups, the Psy, and humans. The focus is on Sophia Russo and Max Shannon, who both work for councilor Nikita Duncan of the Psy in San Francisco.
If you're interested, there is a chronological listing of the Psy-Changeling books on my website.
My Take It's another sweet background exploration of a couple of characters in the Psy-Changeling series: Sophia Russo was once with the Psy Justice system until she burned out. Max Shannon got an offer he didn't want to refuse.
Singh uses third person simple subjective point-of-view from Sophia's perspective, and the story itself is also simple. It sticks strictly to this couple's interactions and only skims any reference to the series.
It's character-driven, and if you've read (and re-read!) Psy-Changeling, Max's concern with her tasting and eating a meal would have more depth. As would Sophia's fascination with how much Max loves her, and how they both express their love.
What action there is revolves around this couple with Morpheus's actions thrown in for a laugh!
The Story Both Sophia and Max have high-pressure jobs, so Max's fantasy of an uninterrupted Sunday morning has a slim chance of succeeding...if only Sophia can shut down her style of communication.
The Characters Sophia Russo is a former telepathic Justice Psy now married to Max Shannon (Bonds of Justice, 8), former law enforcement. Morpheus is her big black ex-alley cat.
River Shannon is Max's re-found brother, having been separated for years.
The Rats are... ...allies with the DarkRiver cat pride and led by Teijan.
The Title The title has hopes for a lazy "Sunday Morning".
Reviewed for THC Reviews “Sunday Morning” is a short story of about seven pages that takes place around the start of Heart of Obsidian in the Psy-Changeling series chronology. In this one, we have Max and Sophia. Max has made a Sunday morning run to the bakery to get a variety of pastries for Sophia. Upon his return, she gets to sample them all in between their loving interactions. We haven’t really seen much of Max and Sophia since their book, Bonds of Justice, so it was nice to catch up with them. This is a little slice of life story for them, showing how they’re enjoying married life while sharing a lazy day together, still very much in love. Max’s brother, River, is also mentioned as spending a lot of time at Max and Sophia’s apartment and having made friends with Teijan and the other rat shifters. Overall, I enjoyed this little update on these two characters.
A cute glimpse of Sophie and Max. We don’t see much of them throughout the series, tbh, so this is a nice little connection to them. What’s really impressive is how Nalini can write a short snippet like this, but still say true to the personalities of all the characters, giving us insight into many of their major traits and quirks.
2.5⭐ No recuerdo absolutamente nada de los personajes que aparecen en esta escena, así que por más adorable que pueda parecerme su domingo de descanso, tuve cero empatía con ellos 😟
