Skin Deep

Rate this book
Blue-eyed and pale-skinned, strikingly beautiful Nina Moore never thought of herself as a white woman. Proud to be black and serving as faculty advisor to the Black Student Union in a small Arizona college, she discovers that looking white can complicate her life...especially her love life. Disappointed by a colorstruck fiance who loves impressing the brothas with his "white" woman, Nina falls hard for Ahmad, a handsome black man, with plenty of reason to be hostile toward whites. His dangerous past is one he may not be able to escape and the little daughter he's raising alone has plenty of questions. But Nina hides her own vague and troubling memories and the family secrets that haunt her dreams. Yet neither Nina or Ahmad can know that the tumultuous circumstances which bring them together are about to unlock mysteries from the past that can open doors to a future they never thought possible.

Skin Deep was an absolute great read from beginning to end. It shared so much insight and many different views. This novel touched close to home for me because I am a biracial female (african american/hispanic) so I can relate to many things discussed. Skin Deep definitely keeps readers engrossed throughout the story, it keeps you wondering what happened and why things are the way they are. You find everything out by the end of the story but it's definitely not what you may expect but all in all it puts things into perspective for you. I recommend this novel 10 times over and will mention it to my Exquisite Ladies Book Club members to go on our BOTM reading list for this year. I will absolutely be looking forward to reading more novels by Kathleen Cross.

More Than Skin Deep

"Skin Deep" has romance, intrigue and drama. The storyline is not predicatable and the questions that I had throughout were not easily answered until the end. Kathleen Cross has done a wonderful job with this book. ~~~~~~~The story is about Nina Moore, who is outwardly comfortable with her bi-racial make-up but inwardly she is confused and has every right to be with all the secrets being kept from her.~~~~~~~It also explores the prejudices of both blacks and whites against African Americans who are on the lighter end of the color spectrum. Nina deals with these prejudices from her own fiancé, Derrick who's with her because she looks white, and Ahmad, who loathes her (in the beginning) because she looks white and the white administration she works with, who promote her over her dark skinned best friend, because of the color of her skin, rather than her actual ability to do the job. However the question of color runs deepest for Nina who has some degree of self-loathing because she is so different from other "sistahs". A recurring nightmare is a product of that fear but is also a key to the secret of who she really is.~~~~~~~I enjoyed the romance between Nina and Ahmad and enjoyed seeing the way it would play out. Ahmad is a stand up guy and a blessing for his daughter, Ebony. Ahmad was betrayed throughout his life, but he came out on top. Nina's best friend Tonya is a true friend and is the most humorous of them all. All the characters portrayed are believable which makes this book very captivating.~~~~~~~There are so many twists and turns in this book, it was hard to put down. Excellent job!

I really liked the book. It gives a good insight about the way that Blacks think about Whites and visa versa and how they think about romantic relationships. It was a really good read!

This new second edition is an improvement on the original novel that was published by Avon Books in 1999. The author has edited, minimally revised and expanded the ending of this sizzling and suspenseful romantic mystery to make for a much more satisfying read.
