So who's the boy with the same sexy-time time-stopping gifts as Suzie? Meet John, who until last night thought he could freeze time with his junk. At long last not alone, what kind of horny hijinx will he and Suzie get up to together? What ANY of us would do if having sex stopped the whole world: We'd do crimes.
"How he got started in comics: In 1983, when Fraction was 7 years old and growing up in Kansas City, Mo., he became fascinated by the U.S. invasion of Grenada and created his own newspaper to explain the event. "I've always been story-driven, telling stories with pictures and words," he said.
Education and first job: Fraction never graduated from college. He stopped half a semester short of an art degree at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri in 1998 to take a job as a Web designer and managing editor of a magazine about Internet culture.
"My mother was not happy about that," he said.
But that gig led Fraction and his co-workers to split off and launch MK12, a boutique graphic design and production firm in Kansas City that created the opening credits for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."
Big break: While writing and directing live-action shoots at MK12, Fraction spent his spare time writing comics and pitching his books each year to publishers at Comic-Con. Two books sold: "The Last of the Independents," published in 2003 by AiT/Planet Lar, and "Casanova," published in 2006 by Image Comics.
Fraction traveled extensively on commercial shoots. Then his wife got pregnant. So Fraction did what any rational man in his position would do -- he quit his job at MK12 to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time comic book writer.
Say what? "It was terrifying," said Fraction, who now lives in Portland, Ore. "I was married. We had a house. We had a baby coming. And I just quit my job."
Marvel hired Fraction in June 2006, thanks largely to the success of his other two comics. "I got very lucky," he half-joked. "If it hadn't worked out, I would have had to move back in with my parents.
One of the year's best comics continues as we get Jon's story in this second issue and the introduction of the maybe-bad guys. Featuring some of Fraction's best writing and the awesome art of Chip Zdarsky, Sex Criminals #2 is a triumph. Read the full review here!
Character development! What we have here is a basic difference between getting off between the sexes. One's normal, the other is just depraved. I'll leave the distinction to everyone else out there. :)
It's such a well written series. The humor likewise is nuanced and something I believe most of us could relate to on some level. I think if I could revisit the first issue again I'd say the same thing. It's a bizarre premise that was likely used as a way to explore all the sexual stories, frustrations and triumphs we seem to face in one book.
Best part tho? Still those damn ads. Best ads in all of comics. Even better than Transmetropolitan and Bitch Planet. The ads here come a mile a minute and are always funny as fuck. I wanna live in a world with this kinda propaganda littering our local Doctor Johns.
5 Hilarious-Stars! ☆☆☆☆☆ There was so much funny stuff in this book, so i'll just state the funniest snip-its.
I giggled when Jon started describing other words for self-pleasure and Suzie kept asking 'what?': masturbating, self-abuse, jerked off, rubbed one out. Lol. "Self-abuse" had me laughing out loud! Haha!
"I thought sex was something like taxes: a thing grownups did. I just hadn't figured out why i wanted to do my taxes so goddamn bad." Hehee
Lol, i didn't see the point in a "2 for 1 Testicle-Shaped Dildos Sale." I mean, i only have 1 p.... oh.... never mind. :)
I thought it was hilarious when Jon's apron read 'LICK THE CHEF he's your master." -Hahahahahaaa!
Sex Criminals—what a wild, unrestrained ride. In case you missed it, here’s a brief summary: it’s still the same story about two people who can freeze time when they orgasm, and they continue robbing banks, making questionable life choices, and getting tangled in absurd, yet oddly relatable, scenarios. Oh, and there's even more weirdness this time around. Because who wouldn’t want to push their comfort zone into the strange and confusing world of time-stopping orgasms and criminal behavior?
Honestly, I thought I was prepared for this second volume. I had read the first one, after all. I thought I knew what to expect—silly situations, awkward humor, and criminal heists sprinkled in with some awkward moments of human connection. But no. Volume 2 takes it to a whole new level. I can confidently say I have exited my comfort zone like a true adventurer, armed with nothing but confusion and a lingering sense of "What did I just read?"
The story continues to follow Jon and Suzie as they navigate their bizarre, time-frozen world, but now they’re dealing with even more outlandish obstacles. There’s a mysterious, almost villainous force (because, of course there is), and as you can guess, things only get messier. The chaotic, absurdity of the plot is absolutely out of control. If there were ever a graphic novel that made me look at my life choices, it’s this one. Seriously. As much as I enjoyed being uncomfortable, it really does push the boundaries in all the right—and wrong—ways.
Matt Fraction’s writing is still just as over-the-top and ridiculous as before, but I’ll give credit where credit is due: he’s consistently delivering laughs and genuinely emotional moments, even when they’re set against the backdrop of a criminal enterprise built on frozen time. Meanwhile, Chip Zdarsky’s art continues to bring everything to life in a way that perfectly matches the tone—colorful, weird, and somehow making it all seem totally acceptable. Or at least as acceptable as anything can be in a world where you freeze time by having an orgasm.
What I do appreciate about this volume, however, is the deeper exploration of Jon and Suzie’s relationship. It’s not just about the heists anymore; they start to face more emotional dilemmas, complicated feelings, and—wait for it—growth. Yes, you read that right. Despite the raunchy, bizarre plot, there's some actual character development. Shocking, I know. In a book about criminals who freeze time with their orgasms, we get to see more of their emotional struggles, even if it is wrapped in a blanket of ridiculousness.
Would I recommend this to others? Well, I can’t lie—I’ve been on the ride, and it’s certainly a unique one. Sex Criminals, Volume 2 is a great way to continue stretching your comfort zone, if that’s something you’re into. If you’re looking for a traditional, safe read, this definitely isn’t it. But if you’re okay with getting completely out of your element—while laughing, cringing, and shaking your head all at once—then give it a try.
Four stars, purely because it took me way out of my comfort zone and made me question everything. What a bizarre, entertaining, weird journey. Can’t wait to see where it goes next. Or maybe I’m just too far gone now.
This volume was a lot funnier and a lot more playful, you can relate to the characters a lot more than the first volume! I found myself properly chuckling at the scene in the comic book store!
Issue #1 Sex Criminals #1: Suzie Down in the Quiet was the backstory of the female half of this Bonnie and Clyde, this issue gives the reader Jon's backstory, which I did not find as enchanting. Perhaps I am just drawn to Suzie's story because I am a woman. I do not dislike Jon, I just did not find him as interesting. Last issue the reader watched these two get together and in this issue we see their relationship develop further.
I will say that both characters read as very genuine and real. Overall, this comic is too interesting and unique to put down.
Side note: I love the humor that runs from the front cover to the back, with the highlight being the recap from the last issue something I often skip in other comics.
Second part of Sex Criminals continues and tell us Jon's story and its a funny one and in the meantime Suzie and Jon have sex and enjoy their collective stopped time. Superb series, I wish it all the best.
I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more, you should also read what you love and then just Keep on Reading.
A++ for the sex positive female character, and for the teenagers figuring out their sexuality, how the story shows how hard it is because of the lack of resources and help.
Read the two issues back to back and together I give them 4 stars. Can't wait to see what's next. (Also I have a new otp ha).
They're still in the bank. Still trying to rob the bank. While outside these three, I don't know what to call them, dressed in white costumes keep calling Suzie and Jon, "Children" like a parent would. Those guys, they storm the bank. Meanwhile, CUE FLASHBACK. Dive into the murky world of Jon and jerking off, and Cumworld and a pornstar called Jasmine St. Cocaine!!! Why am I still reading this?
I really like the art style in this series, but up to this point, the story hasn't sucked (hehe no pun intended) me in as other comic books. Still, I got this weird rush of wanting to know what will happen in number 3 so I am continuing this. I don't really recommend this to those who feel uncomfortable when reading about sex and masturbation as these are the two main subjects discussed, especially in this issue.
This book was just as entertaining as the first. I think I'm finding myself liking comics more and more, they're just a bit difficult to read on eBook. I thought this was tastefully funny, and I wanted to read more (so I went and bought the next one right away.
I thought after me relating to Susie so well in the first issue, maybe the series would be from the female perspective and that's where it's strength lay. I was wonderfully wrong. Lovable characters and lots of questions left. awesome.
Dragged a bit more than the first one (and I felt like I needed to re-read the first one for some of the finer details I'd forgotten), but still a blast to read. I really liked the way John's mental illness was depicted.
