The Edge Chronicles are amongst my most favourite of books, an epic saga that means a great deal to me, for varied reasons. This here was a surprise to me, a short story released quite late in the day for the series. It is set between the Quint Trilogy and the Twig Trilogy, and is in essence an origin story for Twig.

Quint and Twig

The outline is sketched in other books, most notably Beyond The Deepwoods (which is set just after this story), but also through many of the tomes. The Edge Chronicles is all about the lineage of one very great family, and this is an important chapter in that. There are three primary characters in this from the series, Quint, his wife Maris, and the most wonderful Stone Pilot - from whose perspective the story is told.

The Stone Pilot

It's a quick story, I read it in an hour and I'm not famed for my alacrity, but it was well done and evoked the older books, sky ships, storms, the Deepwoods, and desperate plight. A brief light, but I always welcome a glimpse back in to this world.

Finally got around to this in anticipation of The Descenders. All it does is briefly fill in the gap between Clash of the Sky Galleons and Beyond the Deepwoods in slightly more detail, but we've heard the broad strokes before. It has no illustrations and is a couple dozen pages at most, but it's uncollected elsewhere yet. Worth it if you really really loved the Edge Chronicles books, optional otherwise.

First time reading this as a neat bookend to the Quint trilogy and setting up the Twig twilogy. I honestly really enjoyed this, it's obviously very short, but it actually packs a massive punch when reading it straight after Quint's books. The heartbreak that Quint and Maris go through, with it ultimately tearing them apart is actually incredibly dark and emotional considering this is essentially a childrens' book.

It's a nice connector to the Twig trilogy and well told through the eyes of Maugin which also adds more emotional background for when she crosses paths with Twig later in the series. Very solid!

A little nugget of lore which seems to have been on Paul Stewart’s mind for a while. It adds some context to one of the most bewildering decision made off screen for plot necessity and happily redeems two of our beloved protagonists, at least in my eyes. Told from the POV of Maugin, talking to Spindle I love seeing the two muses of the Edge mythology together, reflecting on the emotional weight of the impossible decision portrayed in this story.

How sad. Much was told of this in Twig's story but for the telling. Oh.

It’s ok but I definitely wasn’t a fan of how Quint grows up to as its ruins my enjoyment of what I already love about the character. But it was ok but the villain’ s for me did go too far.

This is a recent addition to the Edge Chronicles, a digital short story which links the Quint Trilogy to the Twig Trilogy. It tells the story of how Twig, the son of a Sky Pirate captain, ended up being brought up by woodtrolls in the Deepwoods.

The tale comes from the mouth of Maugin, the stone pilot, who is telling the spindlebug Tweezle what had happened. Whilst it was nice way of putting in some of our favorite characters, it seemed a little unnecessary and the usual third person style would have worked better.

This is the most detailed version of the story we've heard yet (a brief version appears several times in the main Edge Chronicles books) and its a good version. We get some real treachery and unusually for this series some genuine emotion as Quint and Maris are forced to give up their only son.

It's always fantastic to have more Edge Chronicles and I think this is one of the best of the short stories that have been released over the years. It would have been nice to have some original Chris Riddell illustrations though.

A great extra story in the Edge Chronicles which serves as a neat link between the first two trilogies. I would definitely recommend to fans of the series.
